Xiaomi officially unveils full-screen Redmi 5 phones for the budget-conscious

Xiaomi has announced the latest additions to its Redmi range, the Redmi 5 and 5 Plus. Both phones boast an oh so 2017 18:9, pretty much bezel-free display, with rounded corners and an aluminium unibody. The lower end Redmi 5 runs on a Snapdragon 450 processor, while the 5 Plus gets a Snapdragon 625 and a Full-HD+ screen. It’s a single camera setup on both handsets, which you’d expect for the price (we’ll get to that in a second), but power users and YouTube addicts alike will be delighted with the Plus’ whopping 4000mAh battery. The entry level Redmi 5 starts at 799 yuan (around S$165), while a 3GB/32GB 5 Plus will cost you 999 yuan (around S$210). It goes without saying that both are very much in the affordable bracket, but right now there are no plans to launch outside China. Here’s hoping.

The 5.7" 18:9 display will be the new 5.2" 16:9 display from now onwards.

So far xiaomi hasn't release their next big "hit" for the redmi series.

Hope redmi note 5 would be good.

Why the battery is not removable these days? We know that battery is one of the common failure modes, and only give 6 months warranty period.

Because metal body and glass body are the common design for smartphone nowadays..

Removable battery takes up 60% of the phone's size. It makes sense to put in a non removable one to reduce the size and make the phone smaller. Especially not many people would change the battery when it goes flat. nowadays, people simply charge it with portable chargers.

Mi 5 from Aliexpress:

Mi 5 Plus from Aliexpress:

I was interested in the Mi 5+ 4GB/64GB but it does not seem to be available (yet). For anyone who absolutely must have it or for price comparison.

Can wait for next week and see if any qoo10 seller selling and use their pricing as a guage.

Newstar taking pre-orders on qoo10. Redmi 5 going for $215. 5 plus 3/32 additional $70 and 4/64 addtional $150. All prices pre discount coupon use so just nice there is a $30 cart coupon currently. Still this listed price is pretty marked up. Think a more reasonable starting price for 5 plus would be sub $250. Gonna wait for another month or so when more sellers start selling and prices drop then go hoot.
