I would also normally recommend self drive to GOR and Philip Island, but you would also need to weigh up the amount of driving you need to do against your energy level and driving experience. Although if driving, I would suggest going to GOR, stay overnight, then followed by the grampians. They are in roughly the same directions so would be more convenient than splitting them up into different days.

For St Kilda, you most certainly don't need to drive. Simply catch the tram from the city.

I was thinking if self drive might be tiring and GOR roads aint easy to drive around too. I was considering self drive to Philip Island. But then again, I have to plan what to cover for the day. Whereas Day Tour would have everything pre-planned

We are gonna rent a car for the whole trip so mind as well just drive there. But of cause we have to factor in the carpark charges

driving will give you more flexibility, can stop at anywhere you think the view is nice. tiring maybe yes, just need to be alert when driving. then again if you are not confident then it might be better to take a tour.

parking in melbourne is not cheap if your accommodation doesnt provide it to you foc

Why not just incorporate what the day trip has planned and include in your self drive.

For St Kilda, just park further away from the beach and you should be able to find free parking..

Yeah saw carpark map around st.kilda. There is a few locations with free parking.

I was thinking to incorporate the programmes into our self-drive. But without the guide Im not sure if we may miss out certain information etc. Ultimately we are unfamiliar of these places.:s12:

You don't need a guide for those places, just research on those places which they have planned in the day trip, most of them are self exploratory

This April will be my 4th time going to Melbourne. Need some new ideas on where to go.

So far I've been to:
Great Ocean Road
Grampians (hiked to pinnacle)
Great Alpine Road
Mt Baw Baw
Mt Feathertop
Yarra Valley (healesville)
Wineries: Tarrawarra, yering, Rockford
Philip island
Mornington Peninsula
Wilsons Prom (3 days hike, Mt Oberon)

Within Melbourne:
Docklands
Science works
Crown casino (lost $200, never again)
St Kilda pier/beach
Queen Vic market
Melbourne Uni

I think so too, planning a trip to Tassie this year end(2nd time there). Guess I'll just spend my time around the city relaxing then. Maybe drive to Yarra Valley buy some reserved wine again.

May be up north to the gold field towns, and then to the Murray river on the NSW/VIC border (e.g. Echuca)?

I studied in Melbourne for like 6 years and I think Gippsland is a beautiful place visit. Visited the sand dunes which were super fun to climb and the beaches like squeaky beach. Visited the waterfalls too. Went to Yarra Valley for a wine tour- only about $180 for 5 different wineries and each had about 8 tasting portions. The only place I didnt manage to go and regretted not doing so was the Grampions. Now I am back in Singapore and no longer a student I have to pay for my own travels :(
Anyway I created a group called Travel Promotions Singapore to collate all the travel deals etc for myself and for everyoone in the group. Please join and contribute! So we can all know what the latest deals are. Any tips on saving for trips and saving during trips also appreciated:) I can share how I saved money while I stayed in Melbourne.
