Whatever alternatives Open source offers, it pales in comparison to the paid ones.

Gimp Always loses to Photoshop.

MS office always functions better than open office.

Photoshop cs2 is cheap, cost S$1200+, if you can afford and with it, your rate of return is higher, then go for it.
Don't tell me you use illegal version? No piracy please.

Do you use basically all the features MS Office has? If yes, go get that.
For Office 2007 pro edition, it cost S$760.
No piracy please also.

Total damage: photoshop cs2 + office 2007 near to S$2k.

Good luck.

If you want to pay this much, no one's going to stop you.

Hi..

i would like to contribute a comprehensive list of of Windows-equivalent applications in Linux.

http://www.linuxrsp.ru/win-lin-soft/table-eng.html

I'm using kubuntu edgy 6.10.. getting those applications is easy using adept manger or simply apt-get install xxx

do let me know if there are any replacement applications you need..

Some games i've tested:
Maplestory under wine doesn't work..vmware can do the job though (not tested)
Warcraft and world of warcraft can run under wine..

Tried eye candy beryl on both ati and nvidia setup.. ati involves a little more work to set up..

but most of the time i'm using linux more on work and developing.. so games and eye candies doesn't really matter..

Professional Audio:

Ardour - Dedicated, full-blown multi-tracker.

Wired - Throw away your Cubase when this matures.

Hydrogen - This is THE BEST free drum programmer in the whole wide world including M$ and OSX, although stable only in Linux (ahah! too bad!).

Rosegarden - Full-blown MIDI sequencer, can throw away Cubase liao.

LinuxSampler - Gigastudio? Hell yeah. Still very young, not even provided by some distros' repos.

JAMin - Mastering software, reputated for having rendered full albums along with Ardour.

And also for general-purpose recording, the popular and universal Audacity.

Lots of others: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linux_audio_software

Why mr waikiki? Because it provides one with more insight than a website :)

For your kind information, I do not really hate open sourced applications or Operating Systems.

However, I cannot say the same for those Zeolots who seems to consists mainly of Linux users.

Human beings should never be judged by what OS they uses. It's a free world.

Also, due to the reason of being 'free' and open-sourced, some apps pales in comparison by those closed-source ones; eg Utorrent as one very good example?

Free alternatives doesn't mean they are bad, but mainly lack of the commitment to create something that surpasses it's 'original' form.

For example, why not create a 'office' suit that can edit pictures like 'gimp' too?

That will give users a lot of flexibility even though it will complicate the cord.

I have forgotten how many times when I'm using the 'photo editor' in the office suit, being limited by what the program offers. However, if we can combine both together with one easy click, it's still a start.

The morale here is "Innovate, not imitate".

This not only brings a fresh breath and interest into the open sourced community, but will bring along talents that are sorely needed, especially the graphics division to work in new projects.

After working with so many non-it savvy colleagues, all they want is the 'ease of use' from the computer without delving deep into the innards of computer, or the archaic commands that requires memorization of them.

That is at the least priority of their minds because they have other things in work that they need to remember.

One need to re-examine the success story of other working business working model and why the adaptation of it by the masses.

Perhaps their success is based on 'human technology' and by human technology, is by taking into consideration of human thinking, ease of use and appeal factor.

One very good example of this would be the iPod which has sold millions and steadily gathering more each day.

Why iPod? It's beautiful outlook and it's ease of use?

As long as one is stubborn, moving forward will be not be easy.

Hi KouAnKyuuKa,

Is he still persisting his usual ways after his reply that he won't bother the vista forum users?

I'll be away overseas for over a week again, so apologies in advance for the limited and late replies.

Regards,

Mind clarifying that if Dr Vijay is making this up?

I ban my own self out of vista forum on my own account.
The word "reply" means my own reply post in vista forum, and not reply to Dr.Vijay.
Pls read carefully thanks.
Since I said it myself, I follow it.
After that post, I no longer post in vista forum, I won't go back on my own words. Be assured.
I second time said that, no mods send me warnings and I leave that forum on my own account, if not you ask hwz check my logs, and I'm clean.

Let me clarify myself, I'm not waging war or bringing flame baits into your camp.

I maybe too straight-forward by saying what is not needed. I apologize.

If I really wanted open-sourced to be stagnant, I wouldn't have said what I have said so far.

Again, I apologize for saying what is not needed and not appreciated.
