@reframe,
Nothing need to be done on the HG256.
Have you try power OFF ONT/Asus/HG256 together, then power ON ONT first, wait for 5 min then power ON the Asus & HG256 ?

I think reframe is referring to an N66U rather than an N56U, from his other thread. Hard to isolate if it is his setting/setup, or the N66U preset has issues.

I have powered off one or the other but not all three at the same time. I will try that tomorrow.
I am still not clear what should be the settings for
WAN IP for asus and huawei.
asus: 192.168.1.1 and start IP 192.168.1.2
HG: 192.168.1.100 and start IP 192.168.1.101
Is the above ok?

If all fails, try to see if weap0nx is free to come down to your place and sniff your packets. There is a possibility that Asus made a mistake in the M1-Fiber preset for the N66U.
@reframe,
One last try while waiting for weap0nx to help :
Under LAN->Basic Config
-> Default Gateway : 192.168.1.1
Under LAN->DNS/WINS Settings
-> DNS server : 8.8.8.8
Connect your desktop to N66U's port 1, 2 & 4 to test.
BTW, please share the finding after weap0nx done the snffing

I suggest you do thing step by step to make sure BOTH N66U & HG256 worked individually.
1) Make sure that with only HG256 direct behind ONT, both voice and internet worked.
2a) Reset the N66U to factory default and just change the ISP Profile to "M1-Fiber.
b) Turn off ONT and connect only the N66U direct behind ONT.
c) Turn on the ONT, wait 2-3 min then turn on N66U.
d) Check that internet worked.
After 1 & 2 confirmed working, you may then connect
ONT->N66U->HG256
and check if everything worked as expected.
Thanks, I will try that out tomorrow if no one in family is using internet.
Case 1 works and is what I am using now.
Case 2 I thought won't work at all because I have M1 voice so I did not try. I thought that regardless, I must have HG connected be it before or after 3rd party router. Or is it the case that I can still connect ONT to any router and exclude HG except that I won't have voice?
Thanks.

Just finished testing.
Case 1 works
Case 2, standalone N66 (without HG) with M1 presets still cannot work.
Yes, the M1 preset is not working. Able to get voip working only. Port 1,2,4 able to connect to internet and do a ping but cannot surf.
