just pure speculation...beattie is too important to soton to leave st marys

i will stay as a newcastle fan even though they play like this, can't be always rosy....

1) nothing beats the toon army support

2) Shearer, supported him since his days at soton, blackburn and was delighted when he switched to newcastle..

i had that strong faith and support for them such as yours....hell i even stood by them when Dalglish tore down our team followed by our worst spell under Gullit....but watching the matches the past few times just makes my blood boil.....Trust me, Beattie rocks at Soton, but it remains to be seen if he's true international quality....and like Weng, if i ever stop supporting, i will never go for another club cuz my supporting roots are deep in NEwC....i'll just stop football altogether.

01/06/2004. BACKGROUND:
Eleven years ago, twenty teams entered the brave new world of the Premiership. Leading them into this world of enlightenment and big bank balances were Leeds United, who were Champions of England. The money is still there, but not at Leeds, and neither is any hope of the Championship. Things have changed, all those years ago Newcastle were not even in the top league, and as they chase fourth position in the league they entertain Leeds at their magnificent St. James' Park.

Both sides have had poor seasons. Leeds lie in nineteenth place, while Newcastle recorded a terrible start and have made no impression on the top three ever since. In fact The Toons' real fight this season has been the holy grail of the fourth spot. The Geordies seem to be blighted by two significant moments in Newcastle's recent past might by their defeats last season to Manchester United and this season to Partisan Belgrade. Firstly, by losing to United 6-2 (when they were one up) their Championship hopes were extinguished, but more importantly they were firmly reminded of their position in the footballing hierarchy. The defeat against Belgrade, lead to an early season flop, where they felt sorry for themselves and financial it meant that new purchases would be unlikely.

Leeds' troubles have been documented everywhere, from The Financial Times to Comic Books. Their season is one of woe, but the importance of survival in the top division is so important that surely no one around the club is in any doubt. Eddie Gray has already improved things, but his ambitions are clearly marked. Alan Smith has been moved into midfield while Mark Viduka has been left to patrol for the final third by himself. Such a pragmatic attitude is maybe what Leeds require at the moment.

Newcastle have a heavy reliance on Alan Shearer. He may not play for England, but he has netted fifteen league goals already this season. Without him, Newcastle would really be in trouble.

It is telling that Leeds have lost their three games against the promoted sides. More worryingly the aggregate score in these games has been 13-2 against Leeds.

The two side met on the opening day of the season with honours being shared in a 2-2 draw. Newcastle had been one up, but Leeds took the lead. Although they were heavily attacked they only conceded one more goal. Both Newcastle goals were scored by Shearer. In fact Shearer has an excellent record against Leeds, he has scored more goals against this club than any other. The corresponding fixture last season saw a 2-0 win for The Tykes. However this was their one win against Newcastle in eight attempts.

CURRENT FORM:
Newcastle United: (All Competitions - oldest result first): DWDDLW
Anyone reading the national press will know that the form of The Magpies has been patchy of late. Their victory against Southampton in the cup may galvanise their season which is dangerously slipping toward the mediocre. The Toon have only lost one in, but their run recent record has been plagued by draws, particularly poor when you consider such results have come against the likes of Wolves and Leicester.

Leeds United: (All Competitions - oldest result first): DWDDLL
Eddie Gray certainly improved things at Elland Road. An initial defeat at home to Bolton, was followed by an unbeaten run of five games where his team picked up nine points in fifteen. This run was so vital as it kept them in touching distance with the safety mark. Leeds still lie in the relegation zone, in nineteenth, and know that this season survival will be a huge success. Goals have been hard to come by all season, but Mark Viduka is beginning to find the net with three goals in his last five, including a splendid finish at home to Fulham. Leeds have scored first in six of their last seven games, with five of these games seeing goals in the first twenty four minutes. Early goals always help sides, especially struggling one. A team fighting for survival, fights harder, with more sprit when it has a goal behind them.

TEAM NEWS:
Newcastle United:
The Geordies season has suffered from injuries to key players. Craig Bellamy was always highlighted as the man who took Newcastle on to another level. His pace was always a threat and his partnership with Shearer was working so well. Without Bellamy, Newcastle are certainly more one-dimensional and rely too heavily on Shearer. The introduction of Kieron Dyer up front is an attempt to resolve this problem.

To make matters worse Newcastle as without the replacement strikers, Shola Ameobi is out three weeks with a broken cheekbone, and Carl Cort is still at least a week away with a hamstring strain. Lee Bowyer is also missing with his mysterious hip injury.

Leeds United:
Leeds will be missing two influential figures when they take the field against Newcastle. Club captain Lucas Radebe has ruptured his hamstring, which means the injury prone striker will be out for another two months at least.

Team captain, Dominic Matteo, will also be missing following his sending off against Wolves the weekend before last. Without such influence it will be important that the likes of Gary Kelly and Davis Batty stamp their influence on the game. However, Jermaine Pennant is likely to return to the first team after he was not allowed to play in the FA Cup after Arsenal rejected the idea.

ONE TO WATCH:
Newcastle United
As mentioned above Newcastle have struggled without Bellamy. The introduction of Keiron Dyer into the role of playing just behind Shearer might prove to be inspired. The England man showed his quality and ability in the FA Cup win over Southampton. His goals were both opportunistic and yet brilliant. His second strike in particular brought together, his pace, his presence, his skill, his cool head, and his quick feet. His pace will be an important answer to Newcastle inability to break down defences this season. The extra freedom the role entails also allows Dyer to exhibit his qualities in an effort to impress a Swede or two.

Leeds United:
We all know the problem at Leeds, we all know that it may get a lot worse before it gets any better. There has been one man who has been a shining light, he has performed consistently without having tantrums and without wanting to kick every opposition player in sight. Wayne Rooney may get all the press but James Milner could prove a very effective foil for him in the future. He has been employed on the left of midfield for much of his time with Leeds this season, but this has taken a little pressure off him and allowed him to create. His pace is very good and he runs without fear. He also has impressive vision and his passing and strength are also qualities he possesses. His performance may be the spark that Leeds require.

POSSIBLE STARTING LINE UPS:
Newcastle United: United: Given, Hughes, Woodgate, Bramble, Bernard, Speed, Jenas, Solano, Robert, Dyer, Shearer

Leeds United: Robinson, Kelly, Kilgallon, Duberry, Harte, Batty, Milner, Smith, Bakke, Pennant, Viduka

Newcastle United are set to land Leeds striker Michael Bridges.
The Sun says Newcastle are considering a loan move for former Sunderland star Bridges, 25, as a short-term option until he gets a permanent frontman in the summer.

The Toon believe cash-strapped Leeds could be tempted by the offer just to shift £15,000-a-week Bridges off the wage bill. He has made only one Premiership start this season.

Newcastle v Leeds

St James' Park
Wednesday, 7 Janaury
Kick-off: 1945 GMT
Referee:

Phil Dowd (Stoke-on-Trent)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Newcastle have no new injury concerns but Craig Bellamy (knee) and Lee Bowyer (hip) are still not fit.

Bellamy is back in training as is Carl Cort, who had been out with a hamstring injury, and Steve and Gary Caldwell (thigh and groin respectively).

On-loan wing Jermaine Pennant has been recalled to Leeds' squad after missing the 4-1 FA Cup defeat to Arsenal.

Gary Kelly could return at right-back from a foot injury, with Frazer Richardson likely to miss out.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Newcastle (from): Given, Harper, Hughes, Bernard, Griffin, Woodgate, Bramble, O'Brien, Speed, Robert, Jenas, Solano, Viana, Ambrose, Shearer, Dyer, LuaLua, Chopra.

Leeds (from): Robinson, Harte, Matteo, Morris, Camara, Barmby, Bridges, Viduka, Batty, Pennant, Chapuis, Johnson, Duberry, Bakke, Olembe, McPhail, Lennon, Milner, Sakho, Kilgallon, Richardson, Carson.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

BIG-MATCH FACTS

NEWCASTLE UNITED welcome Leeds to St James' Park, as they resume their chase for the Champions League qualifying fourth place in the Premiership table. Victory could consign Leeds back to the foot, if Wolves beat Blackburn at Molineux.

The Magpies set out on their 100th League season with a 2-2 draw in the reverse fixture at Elland Road in Alan Shearer's 600th career club appearance.

The Tynesiders have won double as many Premiership matches against Leeds as they have lost, but should this game end all square it would be the Geordies' 50th draw under Sir Bobby Robson. The clubs experienced differing fortunes in the FA Cup at the weekend. Newcastle won 0-3 at Southampton, and have another tough away trip to a Premiership side in the Fourth Round in Liverpool. Leeds were knocked out, 1-4 at home to Arsenal.

LEEDS UNITED play their 450th Premier League match, and set out to improve on their worst ever first half to a 20-team Premiership season.

Leeds have won two, drawn three and lost three since Eddie Gray took temporary charge. He would dearly love a repeat of last season's corresponding fixture at St James' Park when clinical strikes at either end of the game from Mark Viduka and Alan Smith earned Leeds all three points. Maximum points would inflict on Newcastle a 50th Premiership defeat since Sir Bobby Robson took charge.

The West Yorkshire club, who've conceded more Premiership goals than any other side (40), go into the match just one point below Leicester, who are just outside the relegation zone at fourth bottom.

no alan smith, no radebe, no matteo

still we only come away with a 1-0 scrappy win, nevertheless 3 pts is all that matters...

Robson dragged a strangely ineffectual Laurent Robert off with 10 minutes remaining, and left him in no doubt as to why.

'He passed the ball backwards,' he said. 'I took him off. I have told him in Hebrew, Israeli, Spanish and any language I can think of, you don't pass the ball back if you are a winger.

'When wingers play like that, they have to go off.'

Reports indicate that Newcastle had most of the chances but Paul Robinson was in great form to deny Newcastle a big win.

It's good to see that Dyer is looking good as Shearer's partner as he caused a lot of problems for the Leeds' defense.

Udinese have been linked with Borussia Dortmund striker Marcio Amoroso.

The Brazilian is also interesting Liverpool and Newcastle United and is being touted around Europe by his Bundesliga club.

Udinese would love to re-sign Amoroso and has been alerted to BVB's reported intentions to negotiate a pay-out with the striker over the final year of his current deal.

Amoroso has less than 18 months left on his BVB deal and could become a free agent at the end of the season.

Robinson kept the score to 1-0..nevertheless..3 pts in the bag...we din play badly..Speed and Jermaine Jenas were commanding in midfield...Shearer and Dyer combined well..

Alan Shearer yet again proved Sir Bobby Robson's match-winner as Newcastle made hard work of beating Leeds 1-0.

The Magpies passed up a series of first-half opportunities and saw a Gary Speed header crash against the post to leave Shearer's fourth-minute strike their only cushion as the game entered its final stages.

Robson would have been furious had his side not tied up three points which appeared to be theirs for the taking almost from the off.

But they were made to scrap all the way as the visitors launched a belated rearguard action in which substitute Michael Bridges squandered a glorious opportunity to rescue a point.

Speed and Jermaine Jenas were commanding in midfield for the home side while Shearer and Kieron Dyer caused all kinds of problems for Eddie Gray's defence, although they found Michael Duberry in inspired form.

And a rugged display from lone striker Mark Viduka, who caused former team-mate Jonathan Woodgate and partner Titus Bramble problems all night, kept his side in it until the death.

From the moment Shearer's fourth-minute rocket left his boot, the visitors were in trouble, and they could have trudged off at half-time with the points already safely banked by their hosts.

That they were still in the game was down to some inaccurate finishing, one fine save from Leeds keeper Paul Robinson and in no small part, to the leniency of referee Phil Dowd.

The official saw nothing wrong with Robinson's 33rd-minute challenge on Dyer as he sprinted on to Shearer's flick-on and stabbed the ball past the advancing keeper before appearing to be felled just outside the box, much to the annoyance of the emergency striker.

Newcastle had taken the lead when Shearer blasted a low right-foot shot into the far corner after Dyer had flicked Aaron Hughes' pass neatly around Matthew Kilgallon for Nolberto Solano to roll the perfect pass into his skipper's path.

Speed was unfortunate not to double his side's lead in the second half when his thumping header came back off the upright, but the Welshman was needed deep inside his own penalty area when Viduka span away from Bramble and volleyed towards goal after 64 minutes.

Robinson's heroics to keep out Solano's 74th-minute effort denied United breathing space, and his side might have capitalised 11 minutes from time when Bridges was handed a clear sight of goal but scuffed his left-foot shot straight at Shay Given.

Substitute Hugo Viana almost eased the tension with the seconds ticking away, but Robinson was again equal to the task.

Story by Kevin Markey
7 January 2004

LEEDS UNITED have denied Newcastle United's attempt to sign Michael Bridges on loan.

Caretaker boss Eddie Gray is looking to review the situation in the final week of the transfer window, but it looks likely that Bridges will be required to stay at Elland Road.

The 25-year-old is desperate for first-team football after fighting back from injury problems.

Gray said to the Yorkshire Post: "I have spoken to Michael and we will review the situation before the end of the month and see what's happening here.

"I understand how he feels, he wants to be playing matches at a higher level, and if he is not getting games here he wants to get them elsewhere.

"But he needs to be patient and he could find himself back in action sooner than he anticipates, I have told him that.

"Michael's been out a long time and it is not always a physical thing, he needs to realise that he is 100 per cent fit," added Gray.

"His injuries have been a big blow to the club when you consider how he performed in his first season."

Bridges come on as a sub in tonight's game against Newcastle for Seth Johnson in the 69th minute.

This is football.... upsets can happen and will happen every now and then. Yes, I agree that Man Utd is strong - but they are not undefeatable. On Newcastle's good day, they can match any team. They say "not every day's a Sunday"... but the game's on Sunday... :D

Who thought that Liverpool would beat Chelsea this morning? Who thought that Fulham can beat Man Utd 3-1 at Old Trafford in October? Who thought that Senegal would beat France in the World Cup?

If everything is pre-determined, then might as well don't play.

Nolberto Solano last night revealed he does not expect to leave Newcastle despite renewed speculation linking him with a move to Aston Villa.

And the Magpies' midfielder, enjoying a welcome resurgence in form after being restored to the starting line-up, reaffirmed his desire to stay on Tyneside.

Solano's future appeared to be in doubt again yesterday after Sir Bobby Robson was widely quoted confirming he would listen to offers for the 29-year-old.

However, Newcastle's manager pointed out earlier this week that he was in no mood to make any United player available for transfer and club insiders insist that situation remains the same.

Solano has been assured that Robson's comments were taken out of context and the experienced international explained: "I have heard nothing about a possible move.

"I am happy to be back in the team, happy with the way the supporters are treating me and happy to be a Newcastle player.

"I know everybody has a price but I was surprised to read that the manager said he would listen to offers for me.

"That was news to me and I hope it is not right."

Robson is expected to clarify the situation later today despite making his position abundantly clear prior to Wednesday's 1-0 victory over Leeds.

The former England manager, when pressed on Villa's purported interest in Solano, insisted there had been no contact from Aston Villa and no bid had been received.

However, Robson did talk in general terms about rival clubs eyeing up his Premiership stars and explained: "If there is genuine interest in one of my players a club should come through the front door and speak to me or my chairman.

"If we thought their bid was worth more than the player then we might be interested in doing business."

What Newcastle's manager knows is that few clubs have the financial muscle to afford a player of Solano's calibre in football's current climate. The Peruvian's popularity within St James's Park has never been greater and selling the midfielder now, with Lee Bowyer injured and Kieron Dyer enjoying a more advanced role, makes no sense whatsoever.

Tactically Robson would be taking a huge gamble in allowing the former Boca Juniors favourite to move to one of the club's top-six rivals at a vital stage of the season.

And the United boss would face inevitable criticism from supporters delighted to see Solano back in a black-and-white shirt.

BIG-MATCH FACTS

MANCHESTER UNITED are attempting to make a successful defence of the Premiership title for the fifth time, and usually slip into top gear at this point in the season. Ominously for their rivals, the Red Devils welcome Newcastle to Old Trafford, seeking a seventh successive victory and ninth in all competitions.

When the footballing knights joust there is never a shortage of goals. A total of 30 have been scored on the last five occasions Sir Alex Ferguson's and Sir Bobby Robson's sides have gone head-to-head in the Premiership.

Sir Alex has cause to remember the reverse fixture which United won by the odd goal in three. The United boss was banished to the stands by referee Uriah Rennie - an incident which cost him £20,000 in fines and a two match touchline ban.

NEWCASTLE UNITED go to the Theatre of Dreams on a two match winning sequence, after defeating Southampton 0-3 at St Mary's in the FA Cup and Leeds 1-0 in the midweek Premiership game. The Magpies have drawn the last three away League games against Wolves, Charlton and Leicester, bringing their total of top flight stalemates to eight.

The match brings the Premiership's leading scorers head-to-head. Ruud van Nistelrooy has scored 14 League goals and 18 in all for Manchester United this season, while Alan Shearer has netted 17 times for Newcastle - 16 in the League. The Dutchman's goal in the reverse fixture was his seventh Premiership strike against the Geordies, while Shearer has scored six Premiership goals against the Red Devils as a Newcastle player and nine in all. Manchester United are unbeaten in 44 Premiership games in which Van Nistelrooy has scored.

The Tynesiders have lost their last four visits to Old Trafford and are yet to record a Premier League victory there. Newcastle's only win in 37 visits over 53 years was 0-2 in the old Division One on 12 February, 1972.

Newcastle boss Sir Bobby Robson is reportedly interested in Chelsea striker Eidur Gudjohnsen.

Gudjohnsen is guaranteed to enjoy more first-team football at St James's Park than he currently does with Chelsea, and The Sun reports that initial contact has been made by the Magpies.

The 25-year-old Iceland striker is rated at £5million, and would provide Alan Shearer and Craig Bellamy with strong competition for their striking places.

Olivier Bernard is backing fit-again Jonathan Woodgate to blunt Manchester United's cutting edge on Sunday following the centre-half's second outstanding performance in the space of five days.

And Newcastle's in-form French full-back believes his defensive colleague is quite capable of capitalising on Rio Ferdinand's imminent suspension to re-establish himself as a first-choice England regular.

Woodgate goes head to head with his former Leeds United teammate this weekend in a fixture which demands the attention of coach Sven-Göran Eriksson and an upbeat Bernard insisted: "Jonathan can handle the pressure.

"He has come back into the starting line-up and I just think he helps us so much. He had a fantastic game against Leeds and deserved his Man of the Match award. I thought the back four was serious on Wednesday night and Woody makes the difference.

"He's a talented player. He cost Newcastle a lot of money, but he produced fantastic performances against Southampton and Leeds.

"With him in the team, we are playing very well. I like his play. It will be quite different against Manchester United because (Ruud) van Nistelrooy has got more movement than most. But I think Woody and Titus can handle that. If we don't make any mistakes as a team then they can cope."

Bernard, of course, has contributed significantly to the revival of a defence which was down and out at Chelsea just two months ago.

That five-goal drubbing appeared to confirm the cynical view that old habits die hard within a club often pilloried for poor performances at the back.

However, Newcastle have conceded a paltry four goals in 10 matches since the trip to Stamford Bridge, including four clean sheets in the last six games, to serve notice of their new-found resilience.

Van Nistelrooy and his Red Devils colleagues are, of course, quite capable of ruining an increasingly impressive record but Bernard added: "We've just got to go there and play the way we are doing at the moment.

"They have played fantastic football against us in the last couple of years and it's always hard against them. We're never happy to lose at home against another team, any team, but when you play Man United you just can't make any mistakes and they've punished us on their last two visits to St James's Park.

"We just have to reduce those mistakes.

"I think we have to defend very well first and take the chances, if they happen, to counter-attack."

Yeah, we should have got a penalty. And Silvestre's goal was properly disallowed. He had his hand on O'Brien's shoulder. That is a foul.

So, were we outclassed? No way...
Were we defending like crazy? Not a chance...
Were we lucky to go back with a point? I'll say we're unlucky not to go back with 3...

But at least this result helped in not letting Man Utd "break-away"...

saw the game last night.. very very good performance by the team... newcastle attacked and defended in numbers.... was such a delight to watch them play last night.... :D :D :D :D

great game and a good result i would say... though it could have gone either way so i shall not complain abt the penalty... after all, silvestre had a goal denied... so more or less even steven...

but i really loved the way both teams fought tooth and nail for the ball...

everyone was predicting a man U win but in no way were the team ever outclassed by man U...

was just too bad that silvestre was in supeb form yesterday... because of him, shearer was kept quiet and a few good chances was stopped by him....

if newcastle can keep up this performance, we are definately going to be a force to contend with this 2nd half of the season....

By Simon Stone, PA Sport

The eagerly-anticipated shoot-out between Ruud van Nistelrooy and Alan Shearer fizzled out with barely a whimper at Old Trafford.

Two of the Premiership's most deadly front-men barely fashioned a chance between them on a day when defences ruled but as the home side celebrated the point which allowed them to leapfrog Arsenal at the top of the league, the Magpies will lament the decision which cost them victory.

When Shearer sees a television replay of the incident midway through the first half when the former England captain clashed with Tim Howard inside the United box, his initial feeling it was a penalty will be confirmed.

He won the race to reach Gary Neville's underhit back pass and was sent sprawling by the United keeper, who arrived an instant later.

To the visitors' disbelief referee Paul Durkin waved away the appeals and Shearer was denied the chance to give his side a lead they would have deserved.

After a poor start, United battled back and had their own tale of woe to fall back on when Mikael Silvestre's second-half effort was ruled out for a debatable shove on Andy O'Brien.

Though it ended the home side's eight-match winning streak and extended Newcastle's 32-year wait for an Old Trafford win, neither side will be too displeased at the outcome which enhances their respective championship and Champions League aspirations.

Sixteen goals in two meetings between the teams last season had raised the prospect of another Old Trafford goal-fest but instead, the opening period was pretty subdued.

The attacking invention that was on show almost exclusively came from Newcastle and it was the Magpies who produced the only real talking point when Shearer was taken down by Howard.

After twice turning down United earlier in his career, the former England captain never lacks incentive to show Sir Alex Ferguson what he missed and the denial of an opportunity to score from the spot brought an on-going dialogue with Durkin that lasted most of the half.

Laurent Robert came closest to actually opening the scoring in that lacklustre first period, bending a free-kick wide of the home goal, although Howard did appear to have it covered.

At the other end, Shay Given had only two saves to make. It took van Nistelrooy 44 minutes to fashion his first shooting opportunity, a long-range shot which flicked off Jonathan Woodgate and was comfortably collected by the Irishman.

Given should have been tested by Ryan Giggs in stoppage time but the Welshman only headed Kleberson's cross into the keeper's arms.

The lack of forward momentum said much about the respective defensive displays.

Woodgate marshalled a Magpies defence lacking Titus Bramble superbly, while Rio Ferdinand, who has nine days to decide whether to appeal against his eight-month ban for a missed drugs test, was also foot perfect, while Mikael Silvestre engaged in a physical duel with Shearer which finished about even.

The arrival of Diego Forlan for Giggs at the start of the second half was a surprise and presumably injury enforced.

Forlan's appearance coincided with United's best spell of the match but it was the visitors who carved out the next decent chance when Jenas smacked his header against the bar.

Stunned by the rare experience of being outplayed on their own pitch, the Red Devils were roused by a couple of crunching Silvestre challenges.

It might not have been the most creative moment of the game but it provided United with the stimulus to pile forward.

Given needed two attempts to save Scholes' long-range effort before Forlan took a stray Gary Speed pass in his stride and unleashed a 25-yard thunderbolt the Newcastle keeper gathered at full stretch.

If Given had generally enjoyed as easy ride in the first half, the second was proving much more eventful. He might have been caught out had Kleberson not lofted a chip over the visitors bar when Forlan put him through but his handling was again secure with three United forwards in attendance as he clutched Fortune's snap shot.

Not that the direction of the game had changed entirely. It took an excellent penalty box challenge from Ferdinand to rob Robert as the Frenchman raced onto Shearer's through-ball at full pace, and Silvestre was not far behind when he swooped to dispossess Dyer, who was also speeding through.

haaa...now then admit...sian..rob us of a famous victory....lousy ref..

Referee Paul Durkin admitted he should have awarded Newcastle a first-half penalty in their goalless draw with Manchester United at Old Trafford.

Alan Shearer was tripped by United goalkeeper Tim Howard after a weak back-pass by Gary Neville but Durkin turned down the former England striker's appeals.

However, after the game the referee accepted he was not up with play and could not definitely see contact.

"It happened so quickly. I was expecting the ball to be played upfield and I was caught quite a distance from play and I was just totally uncertain," Durkin told Sky Sports.

"Obviously I've seen it on the replays and there is contact there. From where I am, unless I'm 100 per cent certain that there's been contact then I can't give the penalty and that was the case."

Durkin, who stood by his decision to disallow a Mikael Silvestre goal for a foul on Andy O'Brien, added: "I am disappointed from a personal point of view because we like to get the big ones right.

"But people need to understand it happens so quick and I've got a split second to make a decision."

Shearer was mystified by Durkin's decision, adding: "We should have had a penalty and if I was playing in red I would have had a penalty.

"But it's too much to ask to give Alan Shearer a penalty at the Stretford End. I asked him 'why didn't you book me for diving if you didn't think it was a penalty?' and he said 'I didn't think you dived'. Work that one out."

United manager Sir Alex Ferguson agreed that Shearer should have been awarded a penalty - but claimed Durkin had been wrong to rule out Silvestre's strike.

"I listened to Paul Durkin and I didn't agree. I thought it was a perfectly good goal, just as I thought it was a penalty kick.

Sir Bobby Robson 'applauded' Durkin for clearing up how he saw the first-half incident - but maintained he still should have awarded a penalty.

"He is being honest and I applaud him for that," said Robson on Sky Sports.

"It has gone against us, but you can't get everything. It was a big blow for us and looked as if Howard did catch Alan. It looked like a penalty."

On the Manchester United goal which was chalked off for a debatable foul on Andy O'Brien, Robson reflected: "You have got to be a bit closer to give a better opinion.

"Sometimes you get them, sometimes you don't. It looked like he [O'Brien] was being man-handled a bit. Maybe it's a 1-1 situation."

He added: "We defended well. The whole back four did superbly. It has been a great week for us, with two victories and a draw, and no goals against."

An ignored penalty claim against Newcastle striker Alan Shearer and a Mikael Silvestre goal disallowed formed the base of Newcastle's 0-0 draw at Old Trafford.

Jermaine Jenas came closest to breaking the deadlock in the 56th minute when his header came back off the crossbar.

After 26 minutes, Shearer reached an under-hit Gary Neville back pass before goalkeeper Tim Howard took him down. To his (and my) surprise, the referee (Paul Durkin) waved play on!

However, the referee later admitted that he was WRONG about the penalty descision, following an "ask the ref" comment from Shearer.

A storm of protest from travelling Magpies' fans followed, along with skipper Shearer racing 40 yards to make his point clear too.

The game was totally out of character, as the Magpies carried just about all of the threat upfront.

Reds defender John O'Shea headed away a Laurent Robert free-kick before Silvestre did even better to block a piledriver from Jonathan Woodgate.

Diego Forlan for Ryan Giggs arrived on the pitch for the home side at half-time, but neither could get a goal. O'Shea and Kleberson both failed to deliver decent crosses from wide positions.

The game was full of chances, as Gary Speed clipped a Forlan cross away from danger under pressure from Ruud van Nistelrooy.

Silvestre put the ball in the net on 65 minutes following a Kleberson corner - but he debatably "shoved" Newcastle's Andy O'Brien and had the goal disallowed.

It took Irish 'keeper Shay Given two attempts to save a Paul Scholes shot, before Diego Forlan forced another full-length stop from the Newcastle goalkeeper (after Gary Speed gave possession away).

Rio Ferdinand did brilliantly to stop Laurent Robert in the closing stages and Silvestre did equally well to stop Kieron Dyer's progress.

Disgruntled Newcastle headed home from Old Trafford on Sunday night after being told by referee Paul Durkin that his mistake cost them their chance of victory over Manchester United.

Durkin earned the admiration of Magpies boss Sir Bobby Robson and opposite number Sir Alex Ferguson in admitting he had blundered by failing to give the visitors a first-half spot-kick when Tim Howard floored Alan Shearer as they chased Gary Neville's under-hit back pass during the goalless draw.

Durkin admitted: "If I had seen the incident clearly I would have given it. I was expecting the ball to be played upfield, so I was a long way off when it happened and I wasn't certain there had been any contact. It's disappointing because you like to get the big decisions right but you only get a split second. I looked at it again on TV and Newcastle can count themselves unfortunate."

While Ferguson claimed the error was the major reason behind the Portland official's decision to disallow Mikael Silvestre's second-half effort, Robson was more philosophical.

"At least he is being honest," said the Magpies boss. "It's nice to hear someone admit they have made a mistake and there is not much we can do about it now."

Even Shearer, who initially claimed he would never expect to get a penalty in front of the Stretford End against the club he twice refused to join, had nothing but praise for Durkin's admission. He said: "It is refreshing to find a referee big enough to say he has made a mistake. I have always thought he was one of our best referees and there are not many who would be brave enough to do what he has done."

Ferguson agreed the visitors should have had a penalty but was equally certain Silvestre's strike was legal, even though Durkin claimed he stood by his decision to rule out the goal for the French defender's tug on Andy O'Brien.

"Paul has had the courage to admit he made one mistake and I admire that but I thought he got himself out a hole with the second decision," said the United boss. As far as I am concerned, there was nothing wrong with Mikael's goal but he knows he made the previous mistake and his used his old head to even things out."

The result suited both sides as it maintained Newcastle's top-four hopes and allowed the Red Devils to leap-frog Arsenal at the Premiership summit. It came at a cost for United though as Ryan Giggs has already been ruled out of next Saturday's trip to Wolves after pulling a muscle in his back during the first half.

A draw was a fair result and although it ended the home side's eight-match winning streak, gave them a single-point advantage over Arsenal in a title race Chelsea are still involved in after their victory at Leicester. Ferguson added: "The boys know the drill now and so do I. All the teams involved will drop one or two points between now and the end of the season but the important thing today was that we maintained our momentum. Now we have to keep it that way."

generally i agree, our defence and midfield held up well... kudos to them... only i felt that dyer deserved a better rating and comment... he fell back to defend and broke away a couple of times... too bad Man Utd def was sturdy enough to stop them... felt that bernard did a very good job as well in defence as well...

bottomline is that if

given stay in form
woodgate stay fit always
bramble plays as less games as possible, forgive me, but best is kanna serious injury!
o'brien kanna bloody nose (not that first time i see him bloody nose already, he got knack of getting his nose bloodied)

dyer staying fit and running around. jenas showng more poise in front of goal. solano not bickering with SBR. consistency from mr. robert.

the usual goals from shearer + return of bellamy

newcastle willl be marching on, a couple of decent signings would help but dun see that happening at all

Silvestre had his hand on O'Brien's shoulder. That gave him an advantage in terms of balance and also could have impeded O'Brien's movement. So, it is a foul. Correct decision by the ref.

As for not awarding the penalty... that was a bad call. Everyone saw it as a definite penalty... just too bad the ref and linesman didn't...

Bobby has grounds for optimism Jan 13 2004

By Miles Starforth, The Evening Chronicle

Sir Bobby Robson today insisted Anfield should hold no fears for Newcastle after United's impressive performance against Manchester United at Old Trafford.

The Magpies travel to Merseyside to face Gerard Houllier's Liverpool in the next round of the FA Cup on January 24 and, like Old Trafford, Anfield has not been the happiest of hunting grounds for Sir Bobby and his team since he took charge.

But Robson believes United have nothing to fear having more than held the Premiership champions on Sunday.

And Newcastle have already broken their Southampton hoodoo in the FA Cup, having comprehensively beaten Saints 3-0 at St Mary's Stadium in the third round.

"I said to the players that this was a test result, we had to put on a show as we'd played poorly at Old Trafford last year," said Sir Bobby. "I said if we do well there's no reason to be afraid of Liverpool in the FA Cup.

"It was a test of calibre. The word calibre covers all sorts of elements in players and we showed calibre at Old Trafford.

"Going to Anfield is almost like going to Old Trafford. It's a similar situation. I think we're capable of not losing at Liverpool. We can go down to Liverpool and play very well."

The Magpies have not won at Anfield since November 1995, when Steve Watson scored the only goal of the game to knock Liverpool out of the League Cup.

Meanwhile, Newcastle defender Steven Taylor is back at St James' having completed his month's loan at Second Division Wycombe Wanderers.

The England Under-20 international made six starts for the struggling Chairboys, helping them win two and draw one of those games.

Taylor, who won praise from Wycombe boss Tony Adams, was in the reserve squad for this afternoon's Pontin's Holiday League game at Grimsby Town.

He said: "I've got mixed feelings. It is great that Bobby Robson wants me back so quickly but I'm sorry to be leaving. I've had a great time and I've learned so much more about defending from Tony Adams than I would have learned at Newcastle."

Woody can be a Euro hero Jan 13 2004

By Simon Rushworth, The Journal

Kieron Dyer is confident Jonathan Woodgate can emerge as one of the stars of this summer's European Championships after the in-form defender masterminded a third successive clean sheet.

The commanding 23-year-old followed up outstanding displays against Southampton and Leeds to shackle reigning champions Manchester United on Sunday.

And Dyer is in no doubt that Woodgate represents an increasingly reliable alternative to Rio Ferdinand if England's first choice centre-half fails, as expected, to overturn an eight-month ban for missing a drugs test.

"I think Jonathan showed at Old Trafford just why he could be a star in Portugal," explained the Newcastle defender's England team-mate. "Woody is so strong. He smells out problems and deals with them.

"He has been a magnificent buy for the club and everyone now hopes he can stay free of injury until the end of the season because, when he is fully fit, he is a high-class defender. When you think the Manchester United game was only his third match back, that shows what he can do."

There was little to choose between Woodgate and Ferdinand as both players fought to preserve their respective clean sheets on Sunday and prove their class against the Premiership's finest marksmen.

Many inside the Football Association's Soho Square headquarters would love to see the former Elland Road team-mates reprise a formidable central defensive partnership at international level in the long term. However, Ferdinand's looming ban, coupled with the emergence of John Terry and Matthew Upson, suggests that particular England combination is still some way off and Dyer added: "It's a problem for Woody that he's missed a few games.

"People like Terry and Upson have staked their claim while he's been out with injuries. But if the England manager is short in that position, with the problem hanging over Rio, he knows he has a wonderful replacement in Jonathan."

Newcastle have lost just one of the 11 matches Woodgate has started this season - an indication of just how important the Middlesbrough-born defender has become to the Magpies - and Dyer hinted that an England recall ahead of next month's friendly in Portugal beckons.

"There are reasons why he hasn't won many more caps," he added. "For two years he was not playing for the England team, for obvious reasons, and that must have been frustrating.

"He has had his injury problems over the last year or so but I know Mr Eriksson likes him because I remember the Slovakian qualifier away from home and he picked him in front of Gareth Southgate."

Newcastle have now kept five clean sheets in their last seven games, but the return of a fully-fit Woodgate and Dyer has boosted the Magpies at both ends of the pitch following last month's dismal defeat at the hands of Blackburn.

Both players know that an injury-free run of games between now and May would almost certainly ensure their participation at Euro 2004 and Dyer admitted: "It is a massive tournament. The likes of myself, Jermaine Jenas and Woody have got a chance of going to the European finals and hopefully we can all do it.

"That would be a great achievement for Newcastle United. I was lucky enough to go away to the World Cup Finals for six weeks - it is a fantastic experience for any player and one which I would love to repeat."

And the former Leeds midfielder could be back in contention for the FA Cup fourth-round clash at Liverpool in 10 days.

His comeback will renew speculation over Peruvian star Solano, who has successfully filled the gap on the right of midfield during the Toon?s run of one defeat in six games.

Boss Bobby Robson said: ?It doesn?t look as though Lee is going to need an operation.

?It?s great news for us and him but he has rested for three weeks and his return to full fitness will be gradual.?

Solano, 29, said: ?We have to play and fight as we did in Sunday?s 0-0 draw against Manchester United in every remaining game this season.

?We are battling for fourth place and have to treat it like a war. United do it every week and that?s why they win titles.?

Viana makes Euro plea to Bobby

Newcastle youngster Hugo Viana has pleaded with manager Sir Bobby Robson not to kill his Euro 2004 dream.

Viana, who celebrates his 21st birthday today, had hoped to rekindle his hopes of playing for Portugal this summer by securing a loan move to another club during the January transfer window.

But Robson, fearing injuries to others and unimpressed that Viana has repeatedly voiced frustration at not being in the side, vetoed a proposed loan move to former club Sporting Lisbon.

The midfielder, an ?.5million signing from Sporting in July 2002, is distraught at the situation despite being assured he will be the long-term replacement for Welsh warhorse Gary Speed.

'I chose to join Newcastle because I saw them as a special club,' he said. 'They initially made me feel wanted.

'But since I have been on Tyneside, I haven't been told why the club really wants me here, what position they see me playing in and what the future holds for me at St James' Park.

'I love the Newcastle supporters, but for a professional footballer, the game is about more than the love of the fans. I am sure they understand how frustrating it is for me to be at such a great club and to never play.'

Viana revealed that he had even accepted a 60% pay cut in an attempt to smooth his return to Portugal on a five-month loan deal agreed by chairman Freddy Shepherd, only for Robson to pull the plug.

'I just wish Sir Bobby would reconsider,'' he told the Journal. 'It doesn't make any sense. There have been times when he has promised things. Still nothing has happened.

'Euro 2004 is slipping away from me as I speak. All I am asking is for the club to be a bit more sensible and sensitive.''

Viana is undoubtedly a player of rich ability, but has struggled to make a real impact when he has played, admittedly on several occasions out of position wide on the left.

However, his problem is that the role he covets is currently being filled to superb effect by 34-year-old Speed, who has been one of Robson's most consistent performers since the manager arrived at St James' in September 1999.

'I have been told that I will get my chance when another player is injured, but how is that fair?' said Viana.

'Sir Bobby says he is sympathetic, but I just don't think it's right to expect a player to sit on the sidelines and wait for one of his team-mates to pick up an injury.

'Gary is playing very well and I do not expect to play instead of him. But I know that if Speedo gets an injury, then I won't be first in line to replace him. That's what really hurts.

'I haven't had a conversation with Sir Bobby since we met in December, but my lack of opportunity says it all. I have played a total of 18 minutes in three games since Christmas.'

Viana has started only two Premiership games so far this season, the last being the 5-0 defeat at Chelsea on November 9.

But Robson insists he still has a major role to play, with the club still involved in both the FA Cup and the UEFA Cup as well as the race for fourth place in the league.

'Every top club needs a strong squad of players and we need all of those players all of the time,' he said. 'I like Hugo very much and he is staying here.'

goodie good..

Manchester United midfielder Nicky Butt is reportedly on his way to Newcastle United, according to newspaper reports.

The England midfielder is believed to have held talks on Tyneside with Newcastle boss Sir Bobby Robson.

The 28-year-old is seen as the ideal replacement for Gary Speed, who at 34 and with one year left on his contract, is near the end of his playing career.

Despite the mounting speculation, Robson refused to be drawn over Butt's future.

"Transfers are club business," said Robson. "I can't talk about other club's players. It would not be right."

Butt put in a transfer request at Old Trafford this week after becoming frustrated at a lack of first-team opportunities.

It's no secret Spurs need a combative central midfield player in that mould

Tottenham Action Group

Despite the player's reported desire to stay in the north of England, Newcastle could yet face competition for Butt's services from Premiership rivals Tottenham.

Spurs chairman Daniel Levy is being pushed by Tottenham Action Group to sign the player.

A spokesman for TAG told the Sun newspaper: "It has been widely reported that Butt is for sale and it's no secret Spurs need a combative central midfield player in that mould.

"Therefore, he is exactly the kind of player who should be considered by the board and identified as a real transfer target - especially as the fee seems reasonable."

Morning Papares Roundup

Howaythetoon.com take a look at this morning's papers to see what they are saying about the Newcastle United.

The Sun Newspaper - Toon bid £2m for Al
NEWCASTLE have lodged a cut-price £2million bid for Leeds striker Alan Smith. Their cheeky offer fuels fears of asset-stripping at the Elland Road crisis club. Toon chiefs signalled their intent to cash in if Leeds ? £83m in debt ? are forced into administration next week. Chairman Freddy Shepherd?s move for Smith, 23, would appear to be an opening shot. The England hitman has long been on Bobby Robson?s wanted list ? although the manager last night denied any knowledge of the swoop. He said: "It?s club business if and when we go for a player. Smith is a Leeds United player and under contract. I can?t talk about it." Leeds? board turned down the offer.

The Sun also reports: Lazio have made influential midfielder OUSMANE DABO available on loan. Newcastle, Aston Villa, Bolton, Manchester City and Wolves will lead the chase for the Frenchman.

The Daily Mirror - BOBBY'S BID TO NICK BUTT
The Dailly Mirri reports: NICKY BUTT has opened talks with Newcastle over a possible £5million move to St James' Park. England midfielder Butt, 29 next week, has been on Tyneside this week for talks with the Geordies, who are his favourites to seal a deal with Manchester United. He is desperate to stay in the north and would love a move to Newcastle, who can mount a realistic challenge for honours on the tail of United, Arsenal and Chelsea. Sir Bobby Robson needs a long-term successor to midfield powerhouse Gary Speed who is 34 and has one year left on his contract. Lee Bowyer and Portugal star Hugo Viana have failed to look the part and Robson reckons Butt could provide the answer.

Robson is also ready to test out cash-strapped Leeds with a £2 million bid for striker Alan Smith, who has been a long-term target. However despite their perilous situation, that bid is certain to be rebuffed for now. Butt has won six Premiership titles, an FA Cup and a Champions League winners medal during 12 years at Old Trafford. He was granted a move by boss Sir Alex Ferguson earlier this week after making 296 starts, and 76 sub appearances, scoring 26 goals. Toon boss Robson refused to be drawn yesterday, adding: "Transfers are club business. I can't talk about other club's players. It would not be right."

The Guardian Newspaper - Leeds buckle as vultures hover
The Guardian report that Newcastle are interested in both Alan Smith and Mark Viduka reporting; Newcastle are also after a striker. According to some at St James' Park they would struggle to raise the £5m required for Viduka, but there are contradictory noises emanating from Newcastle about their buying power.
Sir Bobby Robson, commenting yesterday on a reported £2m bid for Smith, said: "All I can tell you is that I don't know anything about that." A senior figure at Leeds also denied there had been a bid. But Smith is coveted by Newcastle. He could partner Alan Shearer and might be his eventual successor. Jermain Defoe of West Ham is another player they admire.

The Telegraph Newspaper reports that Leeds' Trevor Birch has denied rumours linking Alan Smith to Newcastle with the following; Birch yesterday denied reports that Newcastle had bid £2 million for striker Alan Smith, but Premiership rivals will be aware that by next week, they could be dealing directly with the accountants. The Leeds directors could find themselves powerless to stop Smith being sold off despite his insistence that he wants to stay at the club.

The Times also report the Alan Smith to Newcastle rumours with the following; Newcastle?s tactics are intriguing. Freddy Shepherd, the chairman, let it be known yesterday that a £2 million bid for Smith had been rejected by Leeds, a suggestion that was met by a denial from Elland Road and bemusement from Sir Bobby Robson, the Newcastle manager. "All I can tell you is that I don?t know anything about that," Robson, who has struggled since the summer to persuade Shepherd to loosen the purse strings, said.

Robson, who identified Smith and Stephen Carr, the Tottenham Hotspur and Ireland full back, as his leading transfer targets at the end of last season, has been told consistently that little money is available. Tentative interest has been shown in Patrick Kluivert, of Barcelona, and Henrik Larsson, of Celtic, the latter being out of contract at the end of the season. Both would be sold for minimal sums, and were Leeds to be confronted with administration, Smith would fall into the same bracket.

Robson has been informed, however, than any cash raised by outgoing transfers would be reinvested in his squad, a situation that could precipitate the departures of Nolberto Solano, Carl Cort and Steve Harper. If Newcastle could raise around £8 million, while significantly reducing their wage bill, they would have enough to move for both Smith and Carr. Leeds may be powerless to resist a bid of £4 million for Smith.

Until Viduka returned to Australia, Leeds were prepared to allow Newcastle to sign Bridges on a month?s loan. Bridges, who has also been linked with Manchester City and Tottenham, has been afflicted by a series of injuries during his five years in Yorkshire but should there be no recurrence, Robson is confident that he will join Newcastle for nothing when his contract expires in the summer.

Butt: It Won't Happen - Posted by themags - 14:54 Friday, January 16 2004

Apologies for the headline, but this is definitely a none starter. Various media is speculating that we are on the verge of signing Nicky Butt currently of Manchester United. The sum of around £5million is the suggested amount, do we have that sort of spare cash to spend on our already well stocked midfield? No.

If you look at number of midfielders we currently have in the first team squad, Gary Speed, Laurent Robert, Nolberto Solano, Kieron Dyer, Hugo Viana, Lee Bowyer, Brian Kerr and Darren Ambrose. That's eight and we are struggling to provide them with plenty of opportunities at first team football, with Viana been especially vocal on the lack of chances to get in to the first team. Adding another player would just unsettle those currently on the fringe.

Butt does have some quality and plenty of experience, but personally I don't think he's any better that anything we've already got at the club. If Butt was going to be something special I doubt that Ferguson would even consider selling him to another premier league, never mind us, a club that is potentially challenging Man Utd for the top spots in the league.

WTF....

Newcastle United, Friday January 16 2004
Newcastle boss Sir Bobby Robson has played down speculation that they will be signing Nicky Butt, insisting he is more than happy with the players already at his disposal.

Media reports on Friday morning hinted at a £5million deal for the England midfielder, who had his transfer request accepted by Manchester United.

The Magpies have also been linked with a cut-price £2million move for Alan Smith of cash-strapped Leeds, but the veteran boss says it's pure speculation.

"I suppose if we were under pressure and needed a couple of players badly and had two holes in the team or three holes in the team then I would have to do something about it," the 70-year-old said.

"It was decided in the summer not to spend more money then. We spent a lot of money the year before, which is in this year's budget. When we have got anyone fit we've got a very good squad indeed."

A move for Butt hardly seems necessary, with Newcastle already boasting the likes of Gary Speed, Laurent Robert, Jermaine Jenas, Nolberto Solano, Hugo Viana, Lee Bowyer and Darren Ambrose in the midfield.

Sky Sports News claims that Newcastle United have opened talks with Celtic striker Henrik Larsson over a move to St James' Park.

Larsson is set to leave Celtic Park at the end of the season when his contract expires and a number of clubs are hoping to snap him up.

Newcastle are believed to be among the frontrunners for the prolific Swede, as they look to find a partner for Alan Shearer.

With Larsson being a free agent in the summer, he is able to talk to interested clubs about a summer move and Sky Sports News understands that Newcastle officials have held preliminary talks with the former Feyenoord ace.

Celtic are resigned to losing him in the summer, but it is highly unlikely they would consider to sell during the January transfer window, as they chase honours at home and abroad in the second half of the season.

The news of Newcastle holding talks comes as something as a surprise, as Magpies boss Sir Bobby Robson suggested last week the club were out of the race for Larsson, as he had already agreed a move to another club.

Newcastle will face a massive fight for Larsson with several top European sides keen to bring in the former Swedish international, with Barcelona strongly linked with his signature.

Former Barcelona star and current Rangers midfielder Mikel Arteta believes Larsson would be a success at Barcelona, having seen the Swede close up during their Old Firm tussels.

"I think Larsson has shown he is capable of playing in any team. He has scored goals every year," said Arteta.

"If he gets the chance to go to a great club where even better players are there, I think it will be an easy job for him to score because he will get a lot of chances every week.

"Playing with intelligent players behind you, for a striker, is the best thing that you can have."

We r up against Fulham on Monday....1-0 to Toons is my pick...Saha too 'distracted' by his transfer saga that he will have a bad game...:D

17-01-2004, 08:46 AM
01/16/2004. BACKGROUND:
Monday's match at St James Park sees the oldest and youngest managers in the Premiership go head to head. Coleman at 33 is less than half the age of Sir Bobby Robson who will turn 71 next month.

Robson, a one time Fulham player and manager, is hoping to guide his side to a first ever League 'double' over the Cottagers. Lee Clark and Louis Saha put Fulham two-up inside the first eight minutes in the reverse fixture in August. But Alan Shearer came on to spark a Newcastle revival. He set up one goal, converted a penalty and scored from open play.

Although Newcastle are well placed to fight it our for a Champions League place, they are actually on their lowest Premiership points return to this equivalent stage for four seasons. Having won only one of their last five League matches and drawn more matches than any other team so far this season (9 to date), Newcastle are in need of gaining some maximums. Good news for Toon fans is the rock solid defense of recent games; they have not conceded in 4 hours 48 minutes of League and Cup football.

Fulham have lost their last three on the road and are without an away maximum since the shock victory at Old Trafford just under two months ago. Their failure to win points on the road is partly the reason for losing the fourth place they gained at the end of November.

Fulham will be hoping that Newcastle will not be awarded any more penalties, having already conceded one against them earlier in the season they will be interested to know that Newcastle have been awarded more penalties than any other team in the Premiership so far; 6 of their 7 have been converted.

TEAM NEWS:
Newcastle: Shola Ameobi, Craig Bellamy and Lee Bowyer are all back in training, significantly boosting Bobby Robson's options. Ameobi is the closest to a return and may play some part in Monday night's game with Fulham whilst Bellamy and Bowyer will need slightly longer to increase their fitness levels. Titus Bramble is expected to return to the squad leaving Robson with a dilemma of whether to play Bramble or Andy O'Brien, who starred in the 0-0 draw with Manchester United last week.

Fulham: Fulham look like they will continue to play Louis Saha despite him wanting away from the club, as long as he is still on their books for the Monday night fixture with Newcastle. Moritz Volz may make his first start for Fulham since his loan move was made permanent, in place of full-back Adam Green.

CURRENT FORM:

Newcastle (all competitions ? most recent results first): DWWLDD
United came away from Old Trafford last weekend pleased with a point from a game that could have easily gone either way. Dyer's return from injury has coincided with a decent run of results which has seen them beat Leeds at home and Southampton away in the FA Cup.

Fulham (all competitions ? most recent results first): WLWLWL
Fulham bounced back from 2 straight league defeats to beat Everton 2-1 last time out. After a thrashing at Villa Park, Fulham beat Cheltenham in the cup only to be out classed by Boro at the Riverside. With only 3 defeats from the last 5 games, Fulham need to stop dropping points to maintain a Champions League challenge.

WATCH OUT FOR:
Newcastle: Kieron Dyer has looked impressive along side Alan Shearer as he fills in for the injured Bellamy and Ameobi. Another good display might convince Robson that is his best position. The Newcastle midfield will also be looking to play well with talk of Nicky Butt signing for the Geordies ever increasing.

Fulham: The man on everyone's lips is Louis Saha. The big question is will he go or won't he? Depending on which report you read the deal is almost done or a non starter. Either way the way he warmed up against Everton suggests that things aren't as rosy at the Cottage as they used to be for the striker. Either way Saha continues to pose the most attacking threat for Fulham and will test the Newcastle defence on Monday. The Geordies will be hoping that he doesn't come back to haunt them as he spent a period of time on loan at St James from Metz a few seasons ago.

POSSIBLE STARTING XI's

Newcastle: Given, Hughes, Woodgate, Bramble, Bernard, Solano, Jenas, Speed, Robert, Dyer, Shearer.

Fulham: Van der Sar, Djetou, Melville, Knight, Volz, Clark, Sean Davis, Malbranque, Legwinski, Saha, Boa Morte.

SBR is just playing down the speculation...

Butt is linked to Newcastle.. and today's ST.. saying tat Newcastle is likely be the best place for Butt as he will be the SUCCESSOR for Gary Speed who is 34 yrs old now...

both Bowyer and Viana, are still not as good to replace Gary Speed in future...

I personally believe... that Butt will be very willingly to come Newcastle, since we are the only best team among those who wanted him...;)

well, i dun think Smith will be leaving Leeds bcos of 2 millions since Shiekh had pumped in 35 million pound to boost the club...

but i think Celtic Larrson might be one of a good striker to have... as long as he is not too ex...

HENRIK LARSSON is on his way to Newcastle.

Celtic’s Sweden international striker has agreed to join Bobby Robson’s Toon Army in the summer on a free transfer.

Boss Robson had hoped to land the Hoops star, 32, during this month’s transfer window.

But the Premiership side have accepted that Larsson will not leave the Scottish club until the end of the season because both sides are still in the UEFA Cup.

Robson believes that pairing Larsson with Toon idol Alan Shearer will help Newcastle challenge Manchester United, Arsenal and Chelsea for the title.

Boss Robson said recently: “Henrik is a player we’ll consider setting our sights on when we finally know he is on the open market.

“He’s playing in an easy league but when he’s been in Europe he’s still looked a class act.”

Robson has no doubts that a Larsson-Shearer partnership would work.

He added: “Alan is Alan. He won’t change but Henrik can play with him.

“Strikers can build a telepathy with each other if they both have a football brain.”

Newcastle are also monitoring Leeds star Alan Smith, Standard Liege’s Belgium international Emile Mpenza and Spurs’ defender Stephen Carr.

If we are lucky, we might get Larsson (free), Smith (£2m - don't think this will happen) and Butt (£5m) all for less than the price paid for a single Cort or Viana.

Is that good business or what?

:)

Larsson (free)---->confirmed for next season

Smith(2m)---->probably since Bowyer and Woodgate already here but maybe a higher price tag

Butt(5m)----->possible since other England players like Jenas, Dyer, Woodgate also here and it will the best for him to impress England boss (of course, his contribution will be greatly appreciated too)

SAHA OFF TO MAN UTD

By William Gordon
Date: 19/1/2004

Luis Saha is expected to miss tonight's match at St James' Park as he sets up his much publicised deal with Man Utd. He is not expected to sign until the end of the week, but Saha's move is subject to a number of conditions, believed to be a medical and personal terms.

He will be available for selection, although no decision had been taken on whether he will play, or even travel to Tyneside.

Saha spent five months at Newcastle under Ruud Gullit in 1999.

SIR BOBBY ROBSON: "We had him and let him go. I like the look of him a lot, he is a very good player indeed, an outstanding player in fact.

"I've seen a lot of him, but he really came to my attention last year and he scored a wonderful goal against us down there this season.

"He's quick, left-footed and very good in the air. He can play as a twin striker or he can play up there alone. I'm not surprised at all that Sir Alex Ferguson wants him, a lot of clubs would.

"We had him here and could have bought him, but we let him go. You get some, you lose some, but it's a shame because he is a very fine player.

"Fulham are perilously close to us. It's a six-pointer and a very important game for us.

"Chris Coleman is a young manager who has done very well. He has been given a big opportunity to manage a Premiership side and he has grasped it.

"It's a good game for us, though, because we know we can take points off one of the clubs challenging for that fourth place."

Newcastle 3-1 Fulham.... and Shearer did not need to score. Unfortunately could not keep a clean sheet as defense relaxed being 3 goals up. :(

2 goals from set-pieces + a fluke goal from robert

unfortunate to concede a consolation goal from sean davis as no one close him down whose shot creep in off the post

fulham played oki but were sorely lacking their main weapon - saha, if they can't find someone to replace him, fulham will struggle...

onward we march towards 4th place..the holy grail

On appearances, transfer fee and wages received, Cort is now officially the worst signing in United's history - worse even than Marcelino.

A quick reminder of those vital Cort stats:

Signed for £7m in July 2000, since when we have played 180 first team games.

Of those, Cort has started 24 and come on as sub in 4 more. He's managed to complete a full game for us on 12 occasions and last managed back to back starts in May 2001.

19 league starts & 3 as sub, 7 goals.
3 League Cup starts, 1 goal.
2 FA Cup starts, 0 goals.
1 Champs League sub appearance, 0 goals.

Final Score:

Newcastle 3 - 1 Fulham :)

A decent first half performance from us, our set pieces today were very good. After we got the third in the second half we relaxed a little and as a result conceded a goal, but overall I thought we played well. O'Brien scored the first goal for us, followed by a Gary Speed header from a Laurent Robert corner, then in the second half Robert scored a quality goal, Davis got the goal for Fulham.

Actually, Cort's strike rate is really decent... 19 starts 7 goals is actually not bad.

As at today, Adrian Mutu of Chelsea has started 15 games and scored 6 so far. Harry Kewell 19 starts 6 goals. Laurent Robert 18 starts 6 goals (all from Soccernet's stats).

Only problem is that he's injured too often and for too long... :(

Anyway, hope Newcastle produce a good, strong and consistent performance all the way. Who knows.... with Chelsea slipping up once in a while, we might actually catch up.

Leeds players 'offer support' to club

Leeds players today offered a show of support for the financially-stricken club - but they have yet to agree to defer part of their wages.

Acting chairman Trevor Birch met the players and officials from the Professional Footballers' Association this afternoon to discuss measures to help Leeds avoid administration.

The players agreed to offer their support to Birch's plan to avoid administration and discussed deferring a percentage of their wages but did not commit themselves to any specific course of action.

Leeds released a statement this evening, saying: 'There has been a positive meeting between the players, the club and the PFA.

'The players are now fully aware of the financial position of the club and are prepared to offer support should it be required.'

Birch has until Monday to find the funds to prevent the club falling into the hands of administrators. Leeds yesterday revealed a week-long extension to their `standstill agreement' with the principal creditors who are owed a combined £82million.

Birch has also managed to agree the possibility of a further two-week extension up to February 6 - but that will be allowed only on certain financial conditions being met.

He wants the players to defer 30% of their wages until the end of the season to provide Leeds with the £5million needed to see them through the next four months.

Meanwhile, it is highly unlikely that Alan Smith will be sold to Newcastle. The Magpies had offered £3million but had their approach rejected last week - and although reports today claimed Leeds were poised to sell the England striker, it is understood the club will hang on to him.

Club sources indicate that Birch does not believe it makes financial sense to sell any players for a knockdown price - and that if any player is to be to sold it would be Mark Viduka, whose £65,000 weekly salary is a tremendous burden on the budget.

But his wages and price tag are also the reason why buyers may be put off.

PFA deputy chief executive Mick McGuire revealed the Leeds players would offer support once all other avenues of raising income had been exhausted.

McGuire said: 'The players are offering some form of financial support should it be required, when all other avenues have been explored.

'There is potential for deferment of a proportion of their wages but nothing has been agreed at this point.

'It is a constantly changing situation, we will keep monitoring it and when we know exactly what the club may need to make up the shortfall then a decision will be made.

'The players are very mindful of the need to stay in the Premiership as that would stabilise the club.'

McGuire stressed that there was no possibility of the players agreeing to a wage cut.

'Players' contracts are sacrosanct,' he added.

According to the Sun, Newcastle has raised their offer for Alan Smith to £5million and let Smith play for Leeds till end of season.

Win-win situation for both teams as Leeds will immediately have money to stave off administration (at least till end of season) and still have Smith to help them fight the relegation battle.

Bellamy close to Newcastle return

Sir Bobby Robson has admitted that striker Craig Bellamy could feature from the bench in Saturday's FA Cup fourth-round trip to Liverpool.

The Wales striker has been sidelined since October when he underwent his fifth knee operation, but he is back in full training and Robson admits at a push, he could even give him 20 minutes at Anfield.

"Craig Bellamy trained against the first team and sparkled," said Robson. "I really think he could give us 20 minutes on Saturday at Anfield if I really wanted him to.

"To be honest, if I was pushed for players, I'd be tempted to do that. Now, I'm not going to do that, but there's a reserve match on Monday and I think Craig Bellamy might be playing in that one.

"He's going very well - he looked really good, a week ahead of his time, I would have said, so he's not far away at all.

"We're delighted to see him back on the training ground competitively with everybody else. We've looked after him and he's been isolated, he's been rehabilitated very professionally and carefully, but he's ready to leave the nest and get involved now.

"He's done very well, he looked sparkling. His pace was incredible, his movement, his turns on the ball, his desire to play was outstanding - and the pitch was noisy again."

Cup for fourth spot

By CARL LIDDLE

ALAN SHEARER would happily swap a Champions League place for an FA Cup winners’ medal.

Newcastle’s former England skipper is so desperate to triumph at the Millennium Stadium in May that he is ready to do a trade with Liverpool.

The two clubs go head-to-head in the fourth round at Anfield today — and are also favourites to fight it out for the prestigious fourth spot in the Premiership.

Shearer insisted: “If I was given a choice, they can have fourth position and we can have an FA Cup winners’ medal. People in the North East know what I am talking about.

“A cup winners’ medal or fourth spot in the league — I know what I’d have every time.

“Mind you, I’d be happy being in fourth place going into cup final week!”

All that separates the two clubs in the Premiership table is one goal — and they are breathing down the neck of fourth-placed Charlton.

Shearer has never had it easy against Liverpool and it is 80 years since Newcastle knocked the Merseyside Reds out of the FA Cup.

The Toon captain added: “I even won the Premiership title there, under Kenny Dalglish, and yet we still didn’t win the game!”

No wonder Shearer was far from overjoyed to learn that both Steven Gerrard and Michael Owen are both virtually back to full fitness.

He said: “Michael is a great player, the best English forward in the English game and he always scores goals.”

Shearer is fully aware of Owen’s record of 12 goals in nine appearances against the Toon.

But do not expect Owen’s former England team-mate to start advising him where he should be playing his football.

Shearer added: “It is no business of mine but everyone knows I think he’s a great striker — and I mean great! If I made any suggestion about his future then I am sure the management at Liverpool would have something to say to me.

“He is a top player, a big-game player and we would prefer him still to be sitting in the stands.

“Michael’s also a nice bloke, someone I get on with and have contact with.

“Have I spoken to him recently? No. Will I speak to him before kick-off? I don’t know — it depends if he rings me with any duff tips.

“He knows how much I admire him and he looked sharp against Wolves the other night.

“And, unfortunately, the more games he plays after his recent return from injury the better he’ll become.

“He’s had one full game so he’ll be getting there. He’s a pain in the neck!”

Shearer believes that Owen does not get as many column inches as say Ruud van Nistelrooy or Thierry Henry because he has been on the scene for so long.

The Toon star added: “He’s been around for many years already and yet he has had his fair share of injuries plus his ups and downs.

“People expect his consistent best every season and he never fails to deliver.”

At least Newcastle’s defence is playing well going into the tie.

Shearer added: “Our defence’s performances have been a huge plus point for us.

“That was demonstrated when you saw how disappointed we were to concede our first goal in four games on Monday — even though we beat Fulham 3-1.

“Jonathan Woodgate’s a great player and we are a better defensive side when he’s playing.

“When he is fit and playing well I think he is the best English defender in the Premiership.

“He’s just great to have around, good in the dressing room, good fun and has good banter. Everyone gets on with him.”

Shearer also has a great deal of time for Liverpool boss Gerard Houllier.

He said: “I am a big fan of his, just look at the trophies he has won. What he’s achieved there is fantastic.

“I can’t understand much of the criticism aimed at Houllier. We are still fighting for our first trophy!”
