technically, our season will be well and truly over ONLY if we don't beat Soton at Saint Mary's on Thursday morning, SGT
even though our EPL away record reads 2 away wins, we should be optimistic and hope for the BEST...
heard that last min it will be telecast live on Sky Sports in England, but no news of that on SCV

- Woody needs to stay fit - another must
- Steven Taylor needs to answer our prayers! - no comments...
- Oby and Shambles need help. - oby is O'brien? actually, i find him not too bad but needs to improve... Shambles dun need help... he needs to be sacked!!!
- Bernard needs competition (Taylor, someone unknown, or whatever!) - bernard's been giving quite good performances this season... but i think he needs to shed some weight though... a backup would be nice so he can be pushed up to play left mid should robert decide to take leave that day...
- Ambrose needs to be loaned out (sorry! IMO!), we need a very good winger - ambrose... last couple of matches been pretty impressive... needs more experience... doubt he should be in the 1st 11 though... we need someone who can contribute immediately... then again, we got dyer on the right.. if only he can wakeup his idea...

Robson has to go. Pls stop reminding me he saved us from 19th position to above 10th. Given our standard last time, We shouldnt have been at that position. What he did was some NORMAL, AVERAGE manager would be able to do.
However, he did showed class when he push us to CL, perhaps tats why he could be knighted.
Other than Woodgate and Robert, HE HAS NEVER, NEVER upgraded our squad. Instead, Unproven players from Nationwide came in. WTF? He chose Ambrose over Solano?
I can tell u if he's not sacked, his knighthood saved him.
And if u think we couldn't get a better coach, Look towards Chelsea, London. U see Claudio Ranieri.

Ashamed To Be A Newcastle Supporter
By Howaythelads
Let me tell you I walked out of the ground yesterday and up Barrack Road with the Wolves fans, and I was ashamed. I was ashamed to be a Newcastle supporter because it lumps me in with the thousands who were booing Robert when he went off today. It also lumps me in with the thousands of so-called Newcastle supporters who were booing at the final whistle. It also lumps me in with the thousands who were actually booing during the match at pieces of poor play.
I can't believe it and I've been going to the match for 36 years. My message to anybody reading this who was at the match and who was booing...don't renew your season ticket for next season! The club doesn't need followers like you, and that?s what you are...followers. You aren't supporters. It was an absolute disgrace. Just **** off. I've made many posts on the forum grumbling about certain players, there are many who I don't think are up to it, but booing at the match is the most counter productive thing I can imagine. It kills any confidence a player may have. I think Robert was trying too hard when he was on the ball. That made him make elementary errors.
I think Ambrose, although I struggle to see any potential myself, has no chance such is the pressure on him from some sections of the ground. There is no encouragement at all and that is ****e. Both of these players suffer badly when Shearer/Ameobi are paired, there is no movement ahead of them at all. A great situation just after 20 minutes with Robert charging down the left into open space, but when I looked both Shearer and Ameobi were both standing totally static alongside their markers. Neither of them peeled away to make a run, to create some space.
The only runner anywhere to be seen today was Bowyer. Most of the time the pass didn't come when he made some outstanding runs, he must have been the most frustrated player on the pitch today. Man of the match by miles and some want to sell him because, although they don't know him, they don't like him? What a joke!
I know many of you don't rate Robert, well I'd sell him myself now because I don't think he has a future here under this kind of crap that happened today. I've felt all along he's been supported because he does have ability, but today it was clear that he isn't. The man is playing with lead boots on and appears to have no confidence.
Getting back to the ****e support. Despite thinking that today we played absolutely cack, I still did not boo the team off the pitch or boo any individual player. And before anyone tells me "I pay my money, I'm entitled to boo". No, you're ****ing well not. At least not if you call yourself a supporter. Just **** off if you want to boo. I'd sooner go back to the 20,000 supporters we had before Keegan raised the expectations, dragging 30,000+ non-supporters out of the woodwork who just sit there and moan and do nowt to lift the team. These aren't just people who moan when we don't win, they even moan when we don't slaughter a team they arrogantly perceive to be inferior.
It's really pathetic and it's what I expect from Manure fans. It's a real pity that the club needs these extra followers to get the revenue, because other than that we'd all be better off without these people.

i will stick with newcastle thru thick and thin if i see players laying it down for NUFC, board of directors channeling money to 'beautify' the squad,
and then if we win, we're honourable..
even if we lose, we spent all our cash, we are relegated, but its a gd fight...
BUT WAT THE HELL AM I GETTING?
i see the board and the coach believing their squad is old, and tries to concentrate on the future..
WHY THE FARK ARE U BUILDING FOR FUTURE IF UR PRESENT IS IN A MESS?
U THINK UR YOUNGSTERS WILL STICK WIF U WHEN U GET RELEGATED IZZIT..stupid ppl..
if we dont show them our temper, they still duno wtf is wrong..
u think we geordies are guai kias that got football to watch is happie izzit..
me, and i think wif a lot of other fans, is going to be watching dis summer's transaction..
if they still tink they are some smart alec, steal another relatively gd player for free, and then juz sit there and 'arm chio', den wtf..

Ever fancied stepping into Sir Bobby Robson's shoes? Here's your chance to take over in the Newcastle United hot seat.
Once again our If I Were The Boss feature is returning to the Pink over the summer.
Each week we will give one fan the chance to give his or her views on how they would tackle a number of key issues concernng Newcastle United if they were in charge.
All you have to do to is answer the questions below and email your response, remembering to include your name and where you are from, to the Chronicle Sports desk [ec.sport@ncjmedia.co.uk]
1. You have £15 million to spend as well as any money brought in from player sales. Who would you buy?
2. Which players would be packing their boots?
3. What is your realistic expectation for the season?
4. Are the top three in the premiership so far ahead they cannot be caught?
5. What off-field changes would you be looking to make?
6. The chairman's door is open. What would you be telling him?

United midfielder Gary Speed has blasted the boo boys for booing Laurent Robert and Hugo Viana on Sunday claiming any boos directed at any one play is effectively booing the whole team and the Welsh International wants the players and the supporters to be united.
With Newcastle's record on the South Coast and at Anfield many United supporters don't believe Newcastle can pick up the 6 points to clinch 4th place but Speed does.
"Of course we think that we can go to Southampton and Liverpool and win.
"I know nobody else does, I know the fans don't, I know the media don't but we do. That's the most important thing.
"If we don't believe it then what's the point of playing those matches? And it's not just me. There is a belief throughout the team.
"We've won at Southampton in the Cup already this season and we can do it again. If we don't then it won't be for the want of trying."
Speed is the Premiership's most experienced player having played over 400 games in the top flight but he hasn't encountered booing of the magnitude on Sunday.
"I don't think I've experienced anything like Sunday before and I can't wait for the next game to get it out of my system.
"I couldn't really believe the fact that everyone thought that was it and our season was over. In reality, not a lot has changed.
"What happened when Hugo came on is something I'd rather forget. He's a 21-year-old from another country who's a great lad and a great footballer. That's all I want to say on the matter, really. It's obvious how I feel and I don't want to say anything more on the matter.
"I just felt awful for Hugo. As a British player I felt embarrassed for him. Nobody should have to got through that but especially him.
"Laurent's treatment was just as bad. Everyone has their own agenda as far as he's concerned but we're a team and if you boo Laurent then you're booing us. If we're going to achieve anything then we have to stay united as a team."
Many supporters are fearing the worst concerning European football but Speed is optimistic that Newcastle will be playing in Europe next season.
"We're looking forwards with confidence. They're two big games but that's what we're in football for.
"European football is very important to a club of Newcastle's size. There's the money side of it and the prestige which allows the club to attract top quality players.
"As players we want to be involved in the Champions League. We've had two seasons and it was great. The club wants to get in it for the money and the ability to attract big players and we want to play on that stage.
"The European nights are great. Without them it wouldn't be such an attractive place to be or an attractive place to come."

We beat Saints 3-0 at St Mary's earlier in the season...
====================
SOUTHAMPTON: Niemi, Dodd, Lundekvam, Michael Svensson, Higginbotham, Telfer, Anders Svensson, Prutton, Pahars (Ormerod 66), Beattie, Phillips.
Subs Not Used: Jones, Kenton, Marsden, Fernandes.
NEWCASTLE UTD: Given, Hughes, Woodgate, Bramble, Bernard, Solano (Ambrose 82), Jenas, Speed, Robert (Viana 87), Shearer, Dyer (LuaLua 82).
Subs Not Used: Harper, O'Brien.
Att: 28,456
We all know the story of Stu Barrowclough's winner at the Dell in 1972, our last win in Southampton, and thank God we won't hear any more of it. But ironically it was Barrowclough who scored the winner at Old Trafford two weeks earlier to record our last win against Manchester United at Old Trafford ... and where do we go next week?
Can we rid ourselves of that statistic too, all in the space of eight days?
The Stu Barrowclough at St Mary's was none other than Kieron Dyer, drafted in as emergency stand-in striker due to the loss of Shola Ameobi and Craig Bellamy. No disrespect to Shola, but perhaps that cheekbone injury has saved our season.
Dyer has been saying for years that the hole just behind Alan Shearer is his best position, and what a way to show the manager what he can do, given the chance.
Southampton, to be honest, were never at the races. They were second best in all departments in every portion of the field. United were generally quicker and harder in the tackle; defended as good as at any time this season; and attacked with a venim that the Saints couldn't handle.
Jonathan Woodgate was back in the fold and the Mags were all the better for it. Bramble needs a nurse-maid at times to keep him on his toes, and he looks a different player when the ex-Leeds United stopper is by his side.
Dyer provided the spark for Sir Bobby Robson's side, ending his 11-month goal drought with a 24th-minute strike and adding a quite stunning second after 66 minutes.
He collected Alan Shearer's lay-off on the half-way line and hit the accelerator, showing a clean pair of heels to Claus Lundekvam and Michael Svensson and racing clear to thump the ball into the bottom corner.
The goals were the England man's first in 31 games for Newcastle and five for his country. In between Dyer's double, Laurent Robert thundered home another drive six minutes before half-time.
The Saints seemed stuck in second gear, offering little genuine attacking threat in the competition they nearly won at the Millennium Stadium in May.
Kevin Phillips, who looks dreadfully short of confidence this season, was jeered by Newcastle fans every time he touched the ball. But he was lively for a short period, when he hooked one shot into Shay Given's grasp and only just failed to control a tricky cross after a clever link-up between James Beattie and Jason Dodd on the right flank.
At the other end after 24 minutes, Nolberto Solano flicked on Aaron Hughes' cross from the right and Dyer chested the ball down before dispatching a shot past Antti Niemi and into the back of the net.
Robert's mis-hit bouncing volley ended up in the side-netting just after the half-hour, and Robson's men were certainly on top and doubled their lead six minutes before the break.
Beattie only half-cleared after a goalmouth scramble and Robert returned the ball with interest, slamming his angled drive into the net via the arm of Saints keeper Antti Niemi to secure a 2-0 interval advantage.
The home side started the second half a little bit stronger. Beattie cut in from the right after 54 minutes and got the better of Titus Bramble who went wrong side of the striker. But Woodgate raced across to make a stunning tackle to poke the ball behind, just when Beattie was about to pull the firing pin.
Danny Higginbotham met the resulting corner and sent a header flashing across the face of goal. Referee Mike Dean waved away home penalty appeals after a wrestling match in the area involving Jason Dodd and Olivier Bernard.
But the ball squirted to Phillips, whose cross was nodded just over the top by Beattie. Saints continued to press and Given reacted smartly to grasp Claus Lundekvam's header from a corner on his goal-line.
But United grabbed a superb third goal with 66 minutes on the clock, effectively sealing their progress to the fourth round.
Shearer laid the ball off to Dyer on the halfway line and the England international sped goalwards, leaving Lundekvam and Svensson trailing in his wake and blasting a fine left-footed finish into the bottom corner.
David Prutton sent a 20-yard drive wide as the dispirited Saints attempted to pull a goal back. But it was United who came closer to scoring late on, with substitutes Hugo Viana and Lomana LuaLua both threatening.
It was a superb performance from everyone in a black shirt, and who's to say Shearer won't get his dream of an FA Cup winners medal.

ALAN Shearer admits it will be "a disaster" if Newcastle United fail to achieve European football next season.
Two victories, at former club Southampton tonight and Liverpool on Saturday, would secure fourth spot and Champions League qualification.
The Magpies will still qualify for the UEFA Cup if they end the campaign in fifth place - but finishing sixth would bring nothing.
United have managed only two away wins in the league all term and are without a Premiership goal on their travels in 416 minutes, just four minutes short of SEVEN HOURS of football.
Shearer said: "There has been a lot of doom and gloom about the place since the game against Wolves on Sunday - which I can fully understand - and people are saying we have blown our chances.
"But I can promise you that is not the case in our dressing room, and we will be giving it everything we have got now.
"We have a chance to make it a decent season - not a great season, that would have been winning the UEFA Cup and finishing fourth.
"You cannot pull the wool over anyone's eyes and say finishing fourth or fifth would be a great season - maybe three or four years ago that might have been the case, but not now.
"On the other hand we are also fully aware that it could turn out to be a disastrous season if we finish sixth of seventh.
"Our away form has been unacceptable this season and we've certainly made it tough for ourselves, but it's not impossible. We can do it - we have to do it.
"Southampton will be a tough game, but we beat them down there in the FA Cup this season and hopefully that can give us a psychological advantage.
"If we play like we did that day then we'll have a chance, but if the performance is like the one at Manchester City last week or for large parts of season away from home then we'll get nothing.
"I would hate to think we don't have European football next season, that would cap off a miserable season for us."
Meanwhile, Southampton striker James Beattie believes England's Euro 2004 prospects would be greatly enhanced if Shearer reversed his international retirement.
He said: "I think England's prospects in the summer would be quite a lot better if he decided to come out of retirement.
"If he mentioned it to Mr Eriksson then I am sure he would be one of the first names on the squad list, but he has made his decision."
n United yesterday issued season ticket renewals to supporters with prices set to rise by six per cent.
n A Newcastle reserve XI beat St Johnston 2-1 in Perth last night in a testimonial for home defender Jim Weir.

Fat Freddie denies making such an offer to Leeds.
If can get them at that price, that would be the steal of the season. But seriously, no chance Leeds will sell at that kind of price.

Southampton 3-3 Newcastle: FT Report
PA
Darren Ambrose scored a stoppage time goal from 25 yards but it was not enough to rescue Newcastle's bid for a Champions League qualifying place as they drew 3-3.
Shearer heads from point-blank range - but Alan Blayney was in the way for Saints (MikeEgerton/Empics)
'You get nothing for bad luck'
Their last hope of glory was extinguished by Southampton's French substitute Leandre Griffit who, just seven minutes after replacing compatriot winger Fabrice Fernandes, struck the most meaningful blow in this roller-coaster contest.
Running on to a James Beattie flick he muscled past Olivier Bernard and slipped is shot beyond Shay Given to make it 3-2 for battling Saints - his second goal for them as a substitute this season.
Even Ambrose's deflected late effort then counted for nothing - except Newcastle may now get back in the UEFA Cup via fifth place with a win at Anfield on Saturday.
With injury-hit Newcastle committed to going forward in search of maximum points to have any chance of pipping Liverpool for fourth spot and Saints fielding a quartet of attack-minded midfielders it was always likely to be a game full of goals.
Add to the mix the late withdrawal of Southampton's brilliant Finland goalkeeper Antti Niemi through illness, plus an early injury to centre back Claus Lundekvam and it became a nailed-on certainty.
Third-choice Saints keeper Alan Blayney - reserve Paul Smith was also out, nursing a gashed arm - became the first aunt sally in a coconut shy of shots. His first Premiership touch was to pick the ball out of the net after Shola Ameobi's seventh-minute opener for the Magpies.
It was a route one special, with Ameobi heading a long ball up into the air and then chasing it down to the edge of the area where he shouldered aside Paul Telfer's weak challenge to crack a shot inside the young Irish keeper's near post.
Kieron Dyer should have made it two when shooting wide from Gary Speed's knock-down of a right-wing free-kick after Beattie had been booked for a crude foul.
Instead it was Beattie who slid home a 20th-minute equaliser for his 16th - and easiest - goal of the season after Shay Given could only palm out Anders Svensson's low drive.
But it was Southampton who were in disarray when Bowyer cracked his second goal in five days - and only his second for the club - to regain Newcastle's lead from an Ameobi pass in the 36th minute.
The home mood lifted almost immediately when Fernandes drilled in a low cross from the right two minutes later and the unfortunate Titus Bramble turned the ball into his own net.
Blayney then covered himself in glory tipping over Alan Shearer's shot in brilliant style before knocking away Ameobi's well-struck effort.
And, although Newcastle were laying siege to the Saints goal in the end, there defence was always an accident waiting to happen - much to Griffit's and Southampton's delight.
Robson: 'You get nothing for bad luck'
Sir Bobby Robson was still able to find praise for his players after a thrilling match ended in disappointment for the Magpies.
Man of the match: Alan Blayney (MikeEgerton/Empics)
He admitted afterwards: 'I'm hurting very much - but I can't complain about my players.
'It was one of the most thrilling games of football in the Premiership this season.
'We had the bulk of the play in the second half but it didn't quite go our way - and to think we nearly didn't get anything from this game.
'We hit the bar twice but their goalkeeper made a world class save from Alan - he had no right to make that save.
'It wouldn't go for us and then lo and behold they looked to have got a winner.
'It's been such an unlucky night for us - but you get nothing for bad luck.
'It might be a valuable point in the end but it may not be good enough for us either.'
Robson's team now need to win at Anfield to make sure of UEFA Cup action next season.
And the former England boss continued: 'We have to try to win - and we'll give everything.
'Sixth place would be a disaster in a way, after finishing third last year and fourth before that.
'If we had played like this away for most of the season we would be laughing - but `if' is the biggest word in football.
'We've played poor away from home and not taken our chances - and giving away silly goals has cost us dearly in the end.
'We've come a long way from four years ago and I hope our supporters remember that.'
1-1: James Beattie taps in (BenRadford/GettyImages)
Southampton goalkeeper Alan Blayney was all smiles. The Northern Ireland international was only in the side because of illness to first choice goalkeeper Antti Niemi.
And the 22-year-old revealed afterwards: 'I found out 20 minutes before the game I had to warm up - it was a nightmare.
'I was very nervous and shocked when the manager named the team. He didn't really say anything to me.'
He joked: 'Antti is a fantastic keeper who's really helped me - but I hope he's still ill for Saturday and I can play then.'
Striker James Beattie praised the stopper, saying: 'He works hard on the training pitch and deserved tonight.
'We know what he's like - a great young keeper who has proved it to millions of people tonight.'

Oh well, let's hope they pick up one more point at Anfield to qualify for UEFA Cup. Won't be easy with Liverpool having some good form lately.
Saw last night's goals on TV news just now. One good thing out of this game was how good Ameobi is becoming. He scored a very good goal for Newcastle's first and then set up the 2nd.
Another good thing is Bowyer scoring again. News showed one of Shearer's header that hit the bar.
Bramble's own goal was really stupid. There was no danger really as the ball was sent into the box. Somehow it hit his knee and went in.... :(

No. England is only offically allocated three uefa places - 5th in league, FA cup winner and league cup winner. Want more uefa places, either go and win Inter-ToTo cpu or be in the top of the UEFA fair table (the team with the least number of fouls in the season)

Yes, confirmed 5th and 6th place will have a place in UEFA Cup. See page 29 of this document. http://www.uefa.com/newsfiles/19070.pdf
1st & 2nd automatic qualification to Champions League.
3rd and 4th have a play-off to qualify for Champions League. If lose, then will be given a spot in UEFA Cup.
So, now 5th/6th spot is a fight between Villa, Newcastle and Bolton. Villa is quite safe as they have 56 points already. Newcastle has 55 and Bolton 53.
Bolton's highest is 56 points, but their goals diff is inferior compared to Villa or Newcastle.
If Newcastle get a draw, then they qualify for UEFA Cup even if Bolton beat Fulham.

Hey, that doc is outdated liao. It was mean for this season.
But it is not true that 6th place can go uefa cup. The place meant for the 6th place is allocated and went to the league cup winner instead by the English FA. Arsene Wenger was bitching about this sometimes back when he was commenting about the league cup

 That would be THE headlines of the year!! Actually, 12 is enough. Villa 12-0 Man Utd.
But seriously, Liverpool is as good as in the CL qualifiers. Unless Newcastle beats Liverpool 6-0 and Villa beat Man Utd 6-0 or whatever combination to make up the 12 goals deficit.
Here's the scenario, if Newcastle wins:
Villa must win to be 5th. Another other result will mean Newcastle will be 5th. No chance for Bolton for 5th or 6th.
If Newcastle draws:
Villa must at least draw to be 5th. No chance for Bolton for 5th or 6th.
If Newcastle loses:
Villa will be 5th regardless of result. Bolton must win to be 6th.

MANCHESTER UNITED are preparing to make a £12million swoop for Jonathan Woodgate.
The Newcastle centre-half wants a move following the Toon’s failure to qualify for the Champions League.
Woodgate, 24, has been impressive in his first full season at Newcastle and there is no way the club would want to sell.
But there will be little they can do if the player makes it clear he wishes to respond to any overtures from Old Trafford. The defender cost Toon £9m when he moved from Leeds in January last year.
A switch to United would see Woody renew his defensive partnership with former Leeds pal Rio Ferdinand.
United manager Alex Ferguson has a £40m transfer kitty earmarked for a summer spending spree.
He is desperate for a quality defender, especially as Ferdinand’s eight-month ban for missing a drug test will keep him out until September.

By MIKE JEFFREY
KIERON DYER has admitted Newcastle’s young stars have not been the great players they thought they were after failing to clinch a Champions League spot.
The England midfielder yesterday insisted Bobby Robson’s under-achievers could not contemplate walking away from the club in the summer.
And he named himself among the players who had let Newcastle down during a season that promised much more than it delivered.
Dyer, 25, was warmly greeted by the Toon Army when he made his comeback from a four-week injury lay-off in the 3-3 draw at Southampton that finally ended hopes of a top-four finish.
He said: “This season has proved that there’s a lot of work to be done if we are going to show what we are capable of.
“If nothing else, it will prove to some of us that we’re not the great players we thought we were.”
Robson’s men will miss out on Europe altogether if Aston Villa beat Manchester United and claim the UEFA Cup spot.
A Villa draw would hand Newcastle an opening, but then they will have to win at Liverpool in today’s final game of the season. However, a draw would be good enough if Villa lose.
In a bout of soul-searching, Dyer labelled himself as one of the stars who had suffered from starting to believe their own publicity.
He added: “How can we leave when we’ve performed so poorly all season?
“We owe it to the manager, the supporters and most importantly ourselves to turn things around. With the squad we have here, regardless of injuries, we should be finishing in the top four.
“The simple fact is that we haven’t been good enough apart from exceptions like Alan Shearer, Gary Speed, Shay Given and I suppose Craig Bellamy when he’s been fit.
“Maybe we got used to reading how wonderful we all were and what talented players we were.
“A lot of us, myself included, had begun to believe our own publicity. But I can honestly say to our fans we will come back for pre-season with a massive point to prove.”
Robson also admitted a club of Newcastle’s size needed to be in Europe and said: “Nothing is given for free but a club like ours needs to be in Europe.
“We still have something to play for and that’s a huge incentive. The mood in the squad is very positive and we will give it everything because we know what is there for us.”
Bellamy’s chances of making a shock comeback increased yesterday after Robson reported that Shola Ameobi is doubtful with a thigh injury.
Welsh ace Bellamy, 24, last played against Aston Villa on April 18, but Robson said: “We have to decide whether to take a risk on him. Shola hasn’t trained since the Southampton game and I’ve got to look at the situation.”

Really hope Woodgate will not leave us.
Next season we must have full squad to play at least 3/4 of the games! Dyer, Bellamy, Woodgate hadn't play together for more than 5 times this season!

If Woody goes to Man Utd, then together with Ferdinand, they'll probably be the best defense in the EPL (provided they stay on the pitch).
It'll be a big loss to Newcastle, but I suppose if you were in Woody's shoes, the choice is obvious. Oh well, Sir Bobby better started shopping now.

Yeah, maybe it's better that we're in UEFA Cup rather CL if the team is not up to standard.
Wasn't it better that Newcastle reached the UEFA Cup semis than playing only the first round of CL group stages? In a way, I thought it was a blessing that Newcastle was knocked out by Partizan Belgrade. Partizan didn't get very far in the CL after that while Newcastle went on to the UEFA Cup semis.
Let's hope for some major purchases to strengthen the defense and find an able replacement for Shearer.

If the transfer rumours are true, don't think we'll miss any of them. Especially Viana.
Viana - he just can't fit into the team. Maybe he's played out of position or something. Won't miss him but I'm sure he'll shine in another team just like some Newcastle rejects has done. He isn't Euro young player of the year for nothing....
As for Robert, problem is inconsistency. One day he's brilliant, the next very poor. Will we miss him? If we can get a decent left winger who is consistent, maybe not. Man Utd, want to exchange Giggs with Robert?
Woody, we'll miss this guy if he goes. But then again, he hardly plays as he's always injured. How can we miss him since he hardly plays?
Jenas, he's good but also inconsistent. He looks too frail. Needs to add some muscle into his body. He also seldom start these days so might not miss him that much. With Bowyer showing major improvement over the last few games, we might not miss Jenas much.

Daniel van Buyten has not given up hope Manchester City will find a way to sign him permanently from Marseille.
Manager Kevin Keegan wants to keep the Belgian international but claimed the chances of signing him are small due to City's financial problems.
The defender's agent Christophe Henrotay told BBC Sport: "We want to be fair to Kevin. If he wants to sign him we want to keep open that possibility.
"We will wait until Kevin phones me and tells me it is impossible."
Henrotay added: "Daniel hasn't made up his mind yet about his future. He knows Kevin Keegan and likes him."
Van Buyten's agent also revealed that an unnamed English club as well as a Bundesliga club are interested in signing the defender.
"We have had talks with two other clubs - one in England and one in Europe.
"We have had an offer from the German club, who have made an unofficial offer. So we'll wait for an official offer to Marseille to discuss any deal more deeply."
A stumbling block in any potential deal for the defender could yet prove a transfer fee for the Belgian international defender, who is likely to cost between £3.4m and £6.8m.
Van Buyten, who cost Marseille £7.7m when he signed from Standard Liege in 2001, joined City during the January transfer window.

Robert: I Do Not Want To Leave Newcastle
Laurent Robert has spoken out on Newcastle's official website rubbishing claims that he wants to leave Newcastle and that Marseille want to buy him. A rumour first picked up by Sky Sports last week.
Robert said:
"I do not know where the Marseille story came from, I think the press have been talking for me.
"I do not want to leave Newcastle, I am happy and want to stay. I have been disappointed at being on the bench for the last two games and I do not understand why ? but the manager makes the decisions and I accept that.
"I have no problems at Newcastle, and I understand why the fans were not happy with me in the game against Wolves when I was substituted. I did not have a good game and they let me know that!
"I had not scored for a while and my game that day was not good.
"But I will say that I do my best for the club every time I play for Newcastle, and that will always be the case."
Robert on the Liverpool match:
"I thought we did well. Liverpool were better in the second half and put us under pressure, but we defended well and got the result we wanted.
"It would have been nice to go into the Champions League, but that is gone and now we must look forward to the UEFA Cup again."

Newcastle chairman Freddie Shepherd has given his manager full backing by declaring: "You don't sack Sir Bobby Robson." Robson's future has been the source of speculation following a disappointing season at St James' Park which has seen the club finish fifth in the Barclaycard Premiership.
They have also failed to qualify for next season's Champions League and must content themselves with a spot in the UEFA Cup.
But Shepherd insists Robson's position is not under threat, although he admits the club's performance this season has failed to match expectation on Tyneside.
"We'll look at the club from top to bottom and we'll start this week," Shepherd told BBC Radio 5 Live's Sportsweek.
"Bobby has another 12 months left on his contract and everyone knows that. That's a fact. You don't sack Sir Bobby Robson.
"We've had injuries but our performance just haven't been good enough. Everyone is disappointed because we want Champions League football. Fifth place is not good enough. We expect to finish at least fourth."
Shepherd promised funds would be made available to Robson over the summer and insisted there will be new arrivals at St James' over the coming months.
But he dismissed suggestions of Jonathan Woodgate leaving the club following reports that Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson is preparing a bid for the England defender.
"Newcastle have a reputation of coming up with the funds for their manager. Bobby has spent £64million since he's been here so we can't be accused of not providing the cash. There should be two or three players coming in," he said.
"I haven't heard anything from Manchester United about Jonathan - they have my number - so the stories are rubbish. Unless they want to pay £50million for him then they shouldn't call," he said.
Skipper Alan Shearer has another season left on his current deal and Shepherd revealed talks with the former England striker will begin soon.
"Alan has 12 months left on his contract. We'll have a chat with him before that expires," he said.

Newcastle's manager Sir Bobby Robson has said that the centre-half Jonathan Woodgate could miss the start of next season after his injury turned out to be worse than first thought.
Woodgate, who missed the club's Uefa Cup semi-final after tearing his thigh muscle last month against Chelsea, will struggle to make the kick off in August, Robson said.
"He can't even walk. It'll be three months. He had a 50% rupture. You get tears but this is a rupture of the muscle," Robson said.
Andy Griffin, the former England Under-21 international full-back, has joined Portsmouth from Newcastle on a free transfer. He has signed a four-year deal.
The gulf between Newcastle United and the Premiership's top three - Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United - is demonstrated by the earnings from last season in terms of television and prize money.
Arsenal and Manchester United earned more than £56m and Chelsea £53m - compared to Liverpool, who finished fourth, and Newcastle, fifth, with around £32m.
A major factor is Champions League qualification. Henk Potts, a football finance expert with Barclays Stockbrokers, said: "These figures illustrate starkly that the gulf between the teams that play in the Champions League and those that don't is absolutely huge."

Woodgate ready for next season - Toon
http://www.soccernet.com/images/ah/woodgate0328_bc.jpg
Newcastle today moved to play down fears that defender Jonathan Woodgate will miss the start of the new season through injury.
United boss Sir Bobby Robson revealed at ITV's Euro 2004 launch yesterday that the ruptured thigh muscle which has wrecked the 24-year-old's hopes of making the trip to Portugal with England will take three months to heal.
However, Robson was surprised today that his comments had been taken to mean that Woodgate will be absent when his side commence battle once again in August.
The former Leeds player underwent scans in the days after he suffered the tear late in the 2-1 victory over Chelsea on April 25 and was told he would be out for three months from then.
With Woodgate already more than three weeks into his recovery, United are hopeful that he will be able to resume training at the end of July and declare himself available for the start of what will be a hugely important campaign both for himself and his club.
'Jonathan has a three-month injury,' said a club spokesman. 'He suffered the injury on April 25 and has been undergoing treatment since.
'He is expected to be out for three months from the day of the injury, not three months from now, and we're hopeful that he will return to training by the end of July and be available for the start of the new season.'
Woodgate has been plagued by fitness problems - although his injuries have not been connected - almost from the day he arrived at St James' Park in a 」9million move in January last year, and managed only 27 starts last season.
He had just returned to his best form for Newcastle and put in 11 consecutive appearances to play himself firmly into England boss Sven-Goran Eriksson's plans for the summer when he was hit by his latest blow.

As usual !!
Bobby Robson has revealed that he will be working to a tight budget in the transfer market this summer, as the United boss looks to strengthen his squad for next seasons campaign.
Newcastle, who conceded the fourth and final Champions League place to Liverpool, will be left counting the cost of missing out on a place in the lucrative competition. Qualification could have earnt the club in excess of £15m, but the United boss will now be limited in his spending power as he attempts to catch up with Premiership rivals Arsenal, Chelsea, Man Utd and Liverpool.
"I am looking forward to next season very much. We will try to improve, but we have a budget," said Robson.
"The chairman is a sensible fellow and will not put us to the hop, naturally, no-one is going to do that not when you see what has happened to Leeds. If it all goes wrong, you are in dire straits. It is not the end of the club, but they are in dire straits financially.
"We will try and invest and buy what we can."
Robson may look to earn some extra spending power by offloading members of his current playing staff. Lomana LuaLua already looks set to complete a permanent switch to Portsmouth in a £2m deal, while Steve Harper and Hugo Viana also look set to leave St James' Park if the right offer is received.

Right back Andy Griffin has left Newcastle United and has signed a 4 year contract at Portsmouth where he could team-up with Lua Lua if Pompey buy the unwanted Newcastle striker. Griffin's Toon contract expires at the end of next month and it was widely anticipated that the former Stoke man would leave once the season finished.

another Div 1 player??!!
Wednesday 19th May 2004
Premiership clubs Aston Villa and Newcastle are expected to travel to Norway on Thursday to check on the form of Tromso midfielder Morten Gamst Pedersen.
The highly-rated winger has previously attracted interest from Blackburn Rovers, with Graeme Souness a known admirer of the 22-year-old.
However, no bid has materialised from Blackburn and now greater interest is expected from both Villa and Newcastle.
''We have had it confirmed from agents that Villa and Newcastle will be at the Molde game,'' Tromso boss Per Mathias Hogmo told Landsdelsavisa.
''Blackburn have been really busy, but we have not received any formal bids for Morten so far.''
However, despite interest from several English clubs, it appears Manchester United are not potential suitors of Gamst Pedersen.
Sir Alex Ferguson has previously been reported as booking a flight to watch the Molde encounter, but Mathias Hogmo has denied any contact with United.
''We haven't heard about that. No-one from Manchester United has requested anything from us,'' he confirmed.

While we may dream of big money acquisitions - be they Alan Smith or whoever - the likelihood is that our reward for a second successive failure to gain access to the Champions League will instead see us looking to augment our squad with Lee Bowyer-type deals.
Here are two ongoing rumours that fit into this category, concerning players who played elsewhere in the Premiership last season after being deemed incompatible with our status, but who one year on may be more welcome:
http://www.nufc.com/images/okoronkwo-nigeria-3.jpg
Nigerian central defender Isaac Okorwonko has been released by Wolves after just one season in England, during which he didn't get into the first team until the final seven games but did get some half-decent write-ups from journalists for his displays.
The former Shaktar Donestsk player was on trial at United in December 2002 but we opted not to pursue our interest.
However, a Nigerian radio station earlier in the week carried an interview with the player in which he expressed hopes that he would stay in the Premiership rather than move to interested clubs in Germany and Spain.
That was firmed up in the Nigerian press 24 hours later when "informed sources" claimed that Okorwonko's late-season form had re-awakened our interest.
Whether this proves to be kite-flying on the part of the player and his representatives remains to be seen....
http://www.nufc.com/images/mills-robert.jpg
Also being linked with us in recent days has been the Leeds defender Danny Mills, now back from his loan spell at the Boro and enough of a tale to fill the back page of Friday's Chronicle.
It remains to be seen whether we make yet another foray to Elland Road for him, but there seems to be at least as much chance of Mills making his way up the A19 as Smith.
Doesn't exactly set the pulses racing does it? Welcome to Newcastle United - the Austerity Years.

Newcastle United will return to the Far East to play in Bangkok and Hong Kong as part of their pre-season preparations.
http://images.icnetwork.co.uk/upl/icnewcastle/jan2004/8/0/0000DEFA-5EEA-1002-944980BFB6FA0000.jpg
United will go in against the Thai national team in Bangkok' national stadium on Wednesday, July 14.
Then the United squad will head straight off to Hong Kong to Kit Chee on Sunday, July 18.
It's a trip which will prove beneficial to United both from a playing and a commercial point of view, with the Far East now well established as one of the most lucrative markets in the world.
Coincidentally, Real Madrid today pulled out of their planned Far East tour following their dismal end to the season.
Real were saying today that the decision not to go to the Far East will cost them £20m in the long run.
This will be United's first trip to the Far East since 1996 when they toured Bangkok, Singapore and Osaka in Japan under Kevin Keegan.
But there is no chance of Sir Bobby Robson emulating Keegan. For it was while the club were in Bangkok the last time that the Chronicle revealed United had signed Alan Shearer for £15m.
The two games in the Far East mean United now have their full pre-season itinerary completed.
On Wednesday, July 28, they will travel to East Anglia to play in a benefit match for former Ipswich defender and coach Dale Roberts.
United will host their own tournament at St James' Park on July 31 and August 1, involving Rangers, Feyenoord and Sporting Lisbon.
Their pre-season programme will end with a trip to Scotland to take on Celtic at Parkhead on Wednesday, August 4, before their Premiership season starts on August 14.

Newcastle legend Malcolm Macdonald has told his old club: "Forget all about Danny Mills if you want to buy success."
United have been linked with a summer splash for the Leeds and England right-back who spent last season on loan at Middlesbrough.
However, SuperMac insisted today: "Mills isn't good enough. That's why he's cheap.
"He seems to love the image of himself standing fist clenched, bald head, tattooed arm, face contorted in defiance. A hard man.
"But real hard men are clever, not obvious. I used to love players like him. I sought them out because I knew I could go past them and be in on goal.
"Mills is a liability who would drag any team down to his level."
SuperMac went on: "I was delighted that at long last Sven-Goran Eriksson has thrown him out of the England squad for the European Championships in Portugal but I don't want Newcastle to give him a lifeline. If Middlesbrough want to keep Mills let them.
"United desperately need to buy but it must be the right players, not any player because he doesn't cost a lot of dough. That eventually makes you nothing more than a middle-of-the-table side."

Dutch star Bolo Zenden is keen to land a permanent move to either Middlesbrough or Newcastle this summer.
The Sunday Sun can reveal the Chelsea winger, who spent last season on loan on Teesside, has set his sights on returning to the North East for the 2004/05 campaign.
But Fulham are ready to battle the Tyne-Tees duo by bidding to take Zenden - who wants his future resolved before the Euro 2004 finals a week on Saturday - back to West London.
Newcastle boss Sir Bobby Robson is keeping tabs on Zenden's situation, but has yet to make a formal approach for a player he tried to sign in 2001.
And although Zenden would jump at the chance of linking up with Robson, he is equally excited about being reunited with Steve McClaren at the Riverside.
Former Barcelona and PSV Eindhoven ace Zenden rates the Boro boss as one of the best coaches he has ever worked with.
And with McClaren desperate to keep Zenden on board next season - whether on loan or in a full-time deal - Boro seemingly remain the frontrunners for his signature.
"He would like to play for Middlesbrough again. He had a great time there last season," Zenden's father and agent, Pierre, last night told the Sunday Sun.
"He knows the most important thing for any player is to have a good relationship with a coach and he had that with Steve McClaren, who he has much respect for.
"But he also has great respect for Sir Bobby Robson and would be interested in Newcastle if they are interested in him."
There is little prospect of Zenden returning to first-team favour at Chelsea, but his father added: "He has a contract with them for one more year, so maybe he stays at Middlesbrough for one more year - or goes somewhere else - on loan.
"I've been told Fulham are interested - but we hope to know what is going on before Euro 2004."
Meanwhile, Arnar Gudjohnsen played down reports linking son Eidur with a move to Newcastle.
"I know nothing about their interest," he said. "I will be talking with Chelsea chief executive Peter Kenyon about a new contract for Eidur next week."

Newcastle are back on the trail of Benfica's Portuguese international starlet Miguel.
The 24-year-old is among Sir Bobby Robson's potential targets in his search for a new rightback.
Robson is hoping to land either Danny Mills or Mario Melchiot on a free transfer and has also been linked with Blackburn's Lucas Neill.
But in the event of United failing to land any of that trio, Miguel is on their list of alternatives.
Robson has tracked him for several years and appreciates the former Estrela Amadora player's versatility.
Although primarily a pacy rightback, Miguel can also operate on the right side of midfield.
But the unresolved managerial situation at Benfica and Miguel's long-term contract at the Stadium of Light are just two potential barriers to any Magpies move.
With Jose Antonio Camacho having left for Real Madrid, Benfica are interested in appointing current Portugal coach Luis Felipe Scolari as his successor.
And the Brazilian is one of Miguel's biggest fans, having awarded him all 12 of his international caps.
Miguel also recently signed a contract extension aimed at keeping him at Benfica until 2008.
But the biggest stumbling block could be Newcastle chairman Freddy Shepherd's disinclination to sign another player from Portugal after Hugo Viana's failure to live up to expectations in the Premiership.
Newcastle sources have played down speculation that they are interested in Bordeaux's Marco Caneira, who lost out to Miguel for a rightback berth in Portugal's Euro 2004 line-up.
Meanwhile, Norwegian striker Morten Gamst Pedersen - linked with United along with Moroccan international Jaouad Zairi - is in talks with Blackburn.

In case you hadn't noticed, Sir Bobby Robson has become rather big on gratitude.
Or rather, people's lack of it.
At 71, Newcastle United's manager remains engaging, effusive and wondrously energetic.
But the back end of a season spent largely on the back foot saw the great man give in to a grouchiness synonymous with his age.
Suggestions he should retire to smell the roses rather than wrestle with more thorny issues at St James's Park triggered tart reminders from Robson that the Magpies were knee-deep in manure when he found them.
Journalists who speculated on his future were described as "muppets". TV pundits were dismissed in similar terms.
And his response to the sight of emptying terraces and the sound of jeers as his players prepared for their now infamous lap of honour a few weeks back was effectively "et tu, Geordies?"
Yet, as unappreciated as he feels, Robson should look towards Liverpool and recognise the debt he owes United.
Or, to be more exact, the debt he owes United's fans.
Comparison is often drawn between supporters on the Tyne and the Mersey.
Honest to goodness, working- class folk frequently betrayed by Government but finding a communal identity and collective strength in their respective football clubs.
And there perhaps is - and certainly was - something in that.
But there are contrasts between the patrons of St James's Park and Anfield that are equally apparent.
And the sacking of his bon ami Gerard Houllier is reason for Robson to say "vive la difference".
Much has been made of the supposed public backlash against Sir Bobby.
Yet the Toon Army's saintly patience has actually protected his job while the Koppites' desertion of Houllier cost the Frenchman dear.
Granted, the vacant seats which greeted his side on their ill-advised tour of the pitch illustrated the wavering confidence in Robson's ability to deliver genuine success to Newcastle.
But the disquiet over his role in a season of disappointment has not developed into a full-blown public campaign for his dismissal.
Indeed, many fans rallied to his defence in the final few days of the season and his name was toasted in song at Anfield on the closing day of the campaign . . .
Just as it had been at the same ground in an FA Cup tie four months earlier during which home supporters openly demonstrated against Houllier.
The sight of fans applauding a banner deriding a manager who won them four major trophies - three of them in one season - in six years was striking in itself.
But to witness it during a game against a club of commensurate support and expectation which has won NOTHING since 1969 was astonishing.
Yes, Houllier is a victim of Liverpool's history of success.
But chiefly because the fans who forced him out have been so spoilt by that success.
And yes, there's an argument that the Newcastle faithful's stoic acceptance of perennial failure is among the bigger obstacles to their hopes of success.
But it's not an argument Robson can subscribe to, let alone complain that he is unappreciated.
Still in a job while a colleague who made some strikingly similar managerial mistakes seeks new employment, it is time he counted the Toon Army among his blessings.

Ajax fullback Hatem Trabelsi is the subject of a three-way Premiership battle, with Newcastle being the latest club to show an interest in the player.
The Tunisia international has been told by Ajax coach Ronald Koeman that he has no future with the Dutch club and is open to offers during the summer.
The Daily Star reports that Arsenal, Chelsea and Newcastle United are all keen to open talks with Trabelsi, having already registered their interest with his advisors.
Trabelsi - 27- has won many admirers for his attacking style. Currently at Ajax, the fullback has been linked with Europe's top clubs including AC Milan, Manchester United and, inevitably, Chelsea

Newcastle United are being linked with a double striker swoop as Sir Bobby Robson works to bolster his attacking armoury for next season.
According to sources on the Continent, the Magpies have made enquiries about Marseille's Egyptian striker Ahmed Hossam Mido and Lyon's French international forward Sidney Govou.
Mido is keen to leave Marseille after struggling to get into the starting line-up because of the form of Didier Drogba, United's nemesis in their Uefa Cup semi-final last month. The 21-year-old, who was previously at Ajax, has told reporters in Cairo that he is due to meet Sir Bobby Robson to discuss a move to the Premiership in the next fortnight.
He said: "I am interested in a move to the Premiership and Newcastle have shown an interest in me. I am due to meet with Sir Bobby Robson to discuss things soon."
Mido has recently turned down a move to Turkish outfit Besiktas and has also been linked with several Italian and Spanish sides, although his agent has suggested that England is his preferred destination. The forward scored four goals in eight games on loan at Celta Vigo last season, but has not played a league game for either Ajax or Marseille.
Robson has also been credited with an interest in Govou, who has just won the French title with Lyon.
The 24-year-old, who will be in the French squad which will take on England in their opening match in Euro 2004, has been watched by clubs from across Europe, but it is United who have reportedly started the race for his signature with a rumoured £5m bid.
But, according to sources close to the pacy striker, he would rather remain at the Stade Gerland for the time being.
The need for another striker is understood to be high on Robson's list of priorities this summer, with Alan Shearer entering his final season as a player and Craig Bellamy notoriously injury-prone.
Although Shola Ameobi improved dramatically last season, Michael Bridges has failed to show he deserves a permanent contract following his loan switch from Leeds and Michael Chopra has still failed to make the expected leap from reserve to first team.
Indeed, Newcastle's transfer needs are almost identical to 12 months ago, when the a new striker and right-back were identified by Robson as the best way to strengthen his squad.
But while there was no investment last season, that mistake will not be repeated this time and it seems as though the Magpies' manager has already got things moving.
Meanwhile, Southampton striker James Beattie has tried to distance himself from a reported move to Tyneside.
The powerful striker, who used to clean Alan Shearer's boots as an apprentice at Blackburn Rovers, has been consistently named as one of the likely successors to his number nine shirt at St James's Park.
But the 26-year-old insisted yesterday that he had no intention of leaving the Saints, although he also admitted it was up to the club to either accept or refuse any bids.

KIERON DYER confessed he will be too shy to ask for Zinedine Zidane’s shirt after England’s Euro 2004 showdown with France.
Newcastle midfielder Dyer, 25, revealed: “In the Premiershp I try and get a mate’s shirt — Frank Lampard when we play Chelsea or Ashley Cole at Arsenal. I’ve got a big collection.
“After the big games a lot of people go for the best players’ shirts — but I’m just too embarrassed.
“If we played Real Madrid or someone I’d never dare ask for a shirt.”
Dyer took a break between the end of the Premiership season with Newcastle and linking up with England — flying seven pals first-class out to Las Vegas.
He said: “I’m lucky enough to be able to go out and spend a lot of money on a night out.
“I recently flew seven of my mates out to Vegas. We went to a restaurant and spent more than £5,000 on a meal and drinks in one night. It was one of the best nights I have ever had.
“It is brilliant there. But one of the best places I’ve been to is St Tropez.
“One summer we went to a club there.
“George Michael and Eddie Irvine were in there — then all these rich fellas came into the VIP bit with 14 supermodels around them.
“People were spraying champagne over everyone else. In Ipswich it would all kick off but there it was just funny.”
Dyer was part of the England squad which crashed out to Brazil in the 2002 World Cup quarter-final.
He admitted: “After that game the vibe was weird and the dressing room was a very sad place.
“It didn’t hit us until we got back to the hotel and had a few beers. We realised we’d thrown away a great chance.”

He said: "I am happy here.
"I am contracted for another two seasons and I am sure if anything did happen, I wouldn't have a say in it anyway."

Newcastle, misers during the last two transfer windows, are to go back to being a buying club this summer.
That ought to produce a huge sigh of relief amongst Toon Army fans who feared United were about to fall further behind the leading three clubs in the country.
"The chairman realises that the squad needs strengthening and that the supporters are looking for some encouragement," a club insider told me. "We are in Europe and the future looks good as long as we press on.
"The younger players will have matured but there's still a need to bring in fresh blood to lift everyone."
United last splashed the cash 14 months ago when they signed Darren Ambrose from Ipswich Town for £1m, a deal completed outside of a transfer window in March of last year because Ipswich were in administration.
The last big deal was the £9m paid to Leeds for Jonathan Woodgate.
Since then, last summer only brought a free transfer signing, Lee Bowyer, and the January window this year saw no-one other than freed striker Michael Bridges arrive at St James' Park.
That disillusioned United fans, though the club insisted that they had already done their buying for the future in bringing in the likes of Jermaine Jenas and Titus Bramble.
Several former favourites like Malcolm Macdonald and Chris Waddle - as well as the fans - have urged United to buy this summer so as not to fall further behind the big three in the championship chase and to boost their endeavours to win a trophy of any sort after 35 barren years.
The feeling is that it has become even more imperative, with Liverpool certain to go for broke in the transfer market under a new manager and in an effort to placate their England superstars Steven Gerrard and Michael Owen.
However, exactly how much Newcastle spend and on whom will be the key factor in producing greater hope.
Manager Sir Bobby Robson is going to the European Championships in Portugal for ITV, of course, but he has already drawn up a list of targets and had long discussions with Shepherd.
Michael Carrick and Bolo Zenden have been linked with moves to Newcastle but there are question marks against both.
Carrick, a Geordie, has long been admired within St James' Park but the timing is bad, with United having Jenas, Bowyer and Kieron Dyer fighting for the right side of central midfield and Gary Speed and Hugo Viana competing for the other place. So it's felt that another central player is not a priority.
Zenden has expressed an interest in a switch to Tyneside but United remember with some bitterness that he turned them down to go to Chelsea just before the Magpies bought Laurent Robert.

buy buy buy.Great Chelsea Sale going on.
Newcastle will hold crunch talks with England right-back Danny Mills next week to try and force a transfer breakthrough.
Mills is currently on a family holiday in Dubai but is due to return to thrash out terms with United.
The sticking point is his £40,000-a-week wages, with Newcastle's offer falling below that valuation.
Middlesbrough, with whom Mills spent last season on loan winning the Carling Cup, have given up on keeping him despite being in the UEFA Cup next season.
United, who have former Leeds stars Jonathan Woodgate and Lee Bowyer on their books, know they can sign the player from Elland Road on the cheap.
"Next week will be crunch time when Mills gets back from Dubai and re-opens talks with chairman Freddy Shepherd," said a club insider.
Manager Bobby Robson was returning from Barcelona today and will hold a series of meetings with Shepherd before he flies out to the European Championships in Portugal at the end of next week.
His old club have announced that they are releasing four top players - striker Patrick Kluivert, ex-Arsenal winger Marc Overmars, Philip Cocu and Michael Reiziger - and no doubt Robson will have spoken with Barca over the situation.
Marseille's Egyptian striker Ahmed Hossam Mido keeps insisting United are interested in signing him and says he is due to meet Robson for talks.
Mido didn't play for Marseille when they beat Newcastle over two legs in the UEFA Cup - he spent some time last season on loan to Celta Vigo scoring four goals in eight games.
A talented but temperamental player, he was originally with Ajax.
Robson has targeted a right-back and striker as summer necessities as he prepares for one last huge effort to win some silverware.

More Paper Talk: Miguel & Sidney Govou
By Matthew Jones - June 7 2004
The Mail on Sunday claimed that Sir Bobby Robson wants to seal a deal for Miguel this week, while the Sun claims that a bid of £8m has been offered for Lyon striker Sidney Govou.
According to the Mail, Magpies' manager Robson wants to wrap up a deal for Benfica wing-back Miguel this week, despite interest from Real Madrid.
£3.5 million is being asked for the Portuguese international, and the Sunday paper claimed that Robson wants to sign Miguel before any other clubs have chance to scout him during Euro 2004.
Meanwhile, the Sun is reporting that an offer of £8m has been tabled for French international, Sidney Govou.
Tottenham are also interested in the Lyon striker.

Bridges Becomes A Trotter
Bolton Wanderers have signed Michael Bridges on a two year deal after the former Leeds United striker's 3-month loan spell on Tyneside come to nothing. The Geordie striker is more than pleased with the deal.
Bridges said:
"I am delighted with the move and it is a two-year deal," Bridges told skysports.com.
"I was impressed by everything at Bolton the gaffer, the stadium and the players at the club.
"I had a few offers from other clubs, but Sam's influence and their status in The Premiership was a major factor in the move.
"I am looking forward to playing at Bolton next season and with the likes of Jay-Jay Okocha feeding me the chances to score it is exciting.
"It is a massive challenge and Bolton are on the way up considering how they finished last season and that was a big plus point for me."
Good luck to Michael Bridges.

Chopra Eyes Loan Move
According to today's Chronicle Newcastle's Michael Chopra is eyeing a loan move away from the Toon in order to get first-team football. Chopra will no doubt be disillusioned at his lack of games and when Bobby brought in Michael Bridges from Leeds last January that must have dented his belief that he will never get more than the odd opportunity.

The Journal reveals Newcastle United are closing in on Lyon's French international striker Sidney Govou after dropping their interest in Marseille's Ahmed Hossam Mido.
THE JOURNAL: "Newcastle are stepping up their interest in Govou and hope to make him their first major signing for 18 months.
"The 24-year-old has just finished an excellent season with Lyon, with whom he has won the French championship in each of the last three seasons, and has been tracked by the Magpies for a couple of years.
"Govou, who is in the French squad to face England in Les Bleus' opening game of Euro 2004 on Sunday, is rated at around £8m by Lyon and can play either centrally or wide on the right. And it is this versatility which has encouraged United to prepare a firm offer and make him their first multi-million pound signing since the £9m purchase of Jonathan Woodgate in January 2002."
The Journal also says Newcastle have also been linked with a move for former Arsenal winger Marc Overmars and Chelsea's German centre-half Robert Huth.
Overmars, 32, is out of contract at Barcelona and available on a Bosman-style free transfer, while Huth, 19, has hinted that he would like to leave Chelsea after making just nine starts last season.
Huth is infamous for stamping on Alan Shearer's nuts when Newcastle beat Chelsea at St James' Park towards the back end of the season. It was a ridiculous challenge that saw United take up the issue with the FA, but they turned down the appeal saying the referee didn't mention it in his report.
Regardless what has appeared in the newspaper, we can tell you neither Overmars nor Huth will be coming to Tyneside this summer. Robson had the chance to sign Overmars last week when he visited Barca, but the Dutchman's high wage demands frightened off any offer. Due to Alan Shearer's contract, the Golden Boy must be the highest earner at Newcastle. So whatever Overmars would pick up ... Shearer would too ... ruling out any chance of a move.
Having blown millions on young Titus Bramble and Hugo Viana, Robson has no intention of throwning away a fortune on another untried teenager. Huth is NOT coming to Newcastle!
