alright! if the news is true.. that solves our left back problem.. jus needs backup...

Departure:
Hammer blow?

Cul-de-sac?

Friday failed to bring the expected confirmation that Kieron Dyer had become a West Ham player, after his extensive medical checks had been concluded.

And The Mail have claimed that the deal is in danger of collapsing:

Dyer, who is desperate to move south to be closer to his family, last night found his hopes of joining West Ham fading when Newcastle's new owner Mike Ashley bumped up the price from £5m to £7m.

He was angry at the way the Hammers approached the midfielder and accused them of unsettling the 28-year-old before they were given permission to speak to him, which West Ham deny.

Ashley told the Hammers they would have to pay £7m, rising to £8m if the east London club qualified for Europe, to secure the deal.

There is a feeling on Tyneside that billionaire businessman Ashley is flexing his muscles in one of the first major transfers since he took control.
maybe Dyer is not going afterall..

José Enrique Sánchez Díaz aka José Enrique (born 23 January 1986 in Valencia, Spain) is a Spanish football player who currently plays for Newcastle United F.C. of the English Premier League. His usual position is a Left Back. He started his footballing career at Levante and spend a season on loan to Celta de Vigo. José was signed by Villarreal CF in 2006 for a fee of €? after eye-catching performances on loan at Celta de Vigo. However he only spent a single season at Villarreal CF before moving to Newcastle for a fee of around €6,000,000

From a Villarreal fan: Quite good pace, good defencively, hard to pass, very good technique and runs very much during a match. Good crossfoot but unfortunately not a goalscorer!

GERARD HOULLIER has told Sam Allardyce he has made a “great signing” in Brazilian international Cacapa.

The 31-year-old defender will sign for Newcastle United today on a free transfer after the player had a successful time under Houllier at Lyon.

And Houllier revealed that Big Sam has spoken to him about Cacapa before finally deciding to hand the defender a contract at St James’ Park.

In an exclusive interview with the Chronicle, Houllier said today: “Sam has spoken to me about Cacapa and I have told him that providing they can keep him fit, he will turn out to be a great signing for Newcastle United.

“Yes, we had a bit of a fall-out at Lyon last season, but this was because he had refused to sign a new contract.

“Now that he is joining Newcastle, they will be getting a very experienced defender which, I understand, is just what Sam is looking for.”

The Chronicle revealed that United were signing Cacapa yesterday and contacts were quick to phone me waxing lyrical about the defender who now has a French passport, which means there is no problem about him playing in the Premiership.

But I have been told that Cacapa is not the sort of player you usually associate coming out of Brazil, with flashy footwork and silky skills, but more of a no-nonsense defender who likes a battle.

And quite frankly, after the lack of bottle some United players showed at the end of last season, this is just what is needed at St James’ Park.

Meanwhile, United’s new fitness team have been amazed at just how fit Cacapa is, even though he has practically done no pre-season work.

But just how early the third player from Brazil to wear the black-and-white shirt tastes some action will depend on the injury situation.

My information is that United will try to sign another central defender before the trip to Bolton Wanderers for the Premiership opener a week tomorrow.

But Allardyce tells me he will hang fire as far as another Brazilian – Edmilson – is concerned, instead he says he will wait until the Barcelona central defender is fit again. and he is now a potential target in the January transfer window.

by Alan Oliver, Evening Chronicle

SAM ALLARDYCE is ready to go for Wigan Athletic’s Leighton Baines, hoping to clinch a £5m deal for the England Under-21 left-back.

And he will do so after his first choice Mikael Silvestre turned down the chance to come to St James’ Park.

Big Sam had hoped to use Alan Smith, who signed a five-year contract with Newcastle today, as a lever to persuade his former Old Trafford team-mate Silvestre to join him on Tyneside.

But the Frenchman, who can operate at both left-back and as a left midfielder, has turned down the chance to come to St James’ – because of Joey Barton’s bust-up with Ousmane Dabo at Manchester City.

I understand Allardyce had agreed a £6m fee with Sir Alex Ferguson and the pair of them were stunned when the 40- times capped French international said ‘No’ because Dabo is his best pal.

Dabo himself has urged Silvestre to join Newcastle and so too has his agent, but the player is sticking to his guns.

And this would leave Baines firmly in Alardyce’s sights, with England Under-21 colleagues Steven Taylor and James Milner ready to throw out the red carpet for him at St James’ Park.

A source close to Baines told me today: "As far as he is concerned, Newcastle United have made a £5m bid for him."

Baines has already snubbed Sunderland and Everton, but the Chronicle revealed in May he would jump at the chance of coming to Newcastle, and this is still the case.

Big Sam is a big fan of the way Baines plays, but his only reservation is that he is a bit small for a left-back and this must leave John Beresford eating his heart out.

However, United’s need for a left- back is now bordering on being desperate and Baines could yet be granted his wish to come to St James’ Park.

Meanwhile, the arrival of Smith has been greeted by his former Leeds United side-kick Mark Viduka, who may finally make his United debut in Sunday’s friendly with Sampdoria at St James’ Park.

They only played for a short time together at Elland Road, but the Aussie striker said then: "I love it when Alan Smith is with us either in midfield or up front alongside me because we always manage to give opposing teams problems."

Smith has been on Man United’s pre-season trip to the Far East and could come straight into Allardyce’s plans.

Meanwhile, Kieron Dyer completed his move to West Ham late last night after coming through his medical.

UNITED have agreed to let young Dutch keeper Tim Krul go out on loan to Scottish Premier League side Falkirk until January 1.

If I am Baines, I would want first team football rather than be backup in an established club for I am challenging for English's left-back slot.

I am pleased with Enrique and Ivica as backup though.

Signing of 3 defenders in such a short time. Desperate move?

Anyway lets have confidence in Sam and his signing. IMO Cacapa will be automatic first choice with Taylor and Rozehnal fighting for the other slot. It will be interesting to see whether Sam will play the more established and experienced Ivica or the upcoming star in Enrique? As for the right side I would really prefer Geremi than Carr though Geremi is a bit overweight to me lol.

So exciting!

United in for £2.5m Drago

NEWCASTLE United are to bring in 31-year-old Serbian left-back Ivica Dragutinovic in a £2.5m move from UEFA Cup holders Sevilla.

This is because they fear they will lose out to Everton for Wigan Athletic’s England Under-21 international Leighton Baines.

The Chronicle reported yesterday that United had bid £5m for Baines and we can reveal today that this is £3m down and another £2m at the end of the season.

But the word coming out of Lancashire is that Baines, whose wife is expecting their second child over the weekend, wants to stay in the North West and favours a move to Everton.

Story continues Continue story
ADVERTISEMENT

So United currently do not have a fit left-back on their books, with the Premiership opener at Sam Allardyce’s former club Bolton Wanderers a mere seven days away.

That’s why they have gone to Spain and beaten both Manchester City and Roma for the man known as Drago.

As a Belgian passport-holder, Dragutinovic will have no problems in being registered in time for the game at the Reebok Stadium.

He began his career in his own country with Borac Cacak before heading to Belgium and a spell in their Jupiler League with Gent and then Standard Liege in 2000 where he was a big success.

Drago switched to Sevilla two years ago and he is under contract until next summer, meaning United will have to pay a £2.5m fee.

He has played 33 games for Serbia and Montenegro and was part of their “famous four” defence which conceded only one goal – to Spain’s Raul – during qualifying for the 2006 World Cup.

Meanwhile Baines was deciding between United and Everton and it’s not looking good for Allardyce.

Everton have put £4m down on the table with another £500,000 on appearances and another £500,000 if they qualify for the Champions League.

Baines was actually pictured watching Everton in action this week and, despite being big pals of United’s fellow England Under-21 internationals Steven Taylor and James Milner, it looks as though he is heading for Goodison.

United have already given up on signing Mikael Silvestre after the Manchester United defender insists he will not come to St James’ Park because of the Joey Barton incident with his big pal Ousmane Dabo.

But there was some good news with Brazilian international Cacapa agreeing a two-year deal at St James’ Park last night.

more defenders are good.. as the new signings.. some are from other leagues so might need time to settle down in EPL.. and we can do rotations more often and try out combinations (that is wat we dun get last season, and kudo to GR as he really got a hard time in dealing with the injuries)

4-3-3 will be nice.. i am hoping to see a more offensive side of newcastle.. been awhile since we play offensive(and attractive) soccer. Smith's purchase was quite good.. at least he can operate in both forward and midfield.. and hopes Nobby comes back to wing, we need his crosses dearly last season.

and last of all.. lets hope our players dun get injured that often (though i understand thats the usual practise with us:D)

Alan smith given no17 (thought will be no8.. but oh well.. dyer still with us)

http://nufcblog.com/alan-smith-is-already-a-newcastle-favorite-heres-why/

his interview today
“I am an honest player and the interest from others comes because they know what they are going to get from me all of the time,” “I am always hungry as a player to do as well as possible, both for my club and personally.”

“I have sacrificed myself for every club I have been at, playing out of position, because my duty is to the good of the team, not myself.”

“I spoke to Sam (Allardyce) who said I will be playing in different positions at Newcastle, but if a manager wants you to play, I will play anywhere. I’m happy to be versatile.”

“There were a few interested in me. People speak about my commitment and they know what they are going to get. However, a lot of people forget I can play as well.” “I wanted everything done before the weekend so I could get a pre-season game in,”
“Since Sunday it has been a bit of a whirlwind.”

“We came back from Malaysia and that’s when I first got my head round the fact I was moving on. Once we got our heads round that we started speaking to other managers. “

“Once a club accepts a bid, you have to ask yourself if you are going to get the opportunity to go out and perform. You need that, but I don’t think I ever let myself down at United.”

“You can tell from the fans’ reaction they didn’t want me to go and that speaks volumes. I just thought it was time to move on. I’m 26 and I want to be making an impact on the first team.”

“I have come to be versatile, but if anyone is to see the best of me, I think that is at center forward. I enjoy playing in midfield, but perhaps a bit more attacking. However, if someone asks you to play wherever, you do it.”

“The fans’ side of things is difficult because Newcastle demand big things because there hasn’t been much success. I know that is what people want. However, Leeds and Man United demand 100% week in week out as well and Newcastle won’t be any different. I will be giving my all every time I pull on the shirt on and that is what supporters want to see.”

“Once I spoke to the gaffer he told me how much he wanted me to come and be part of what he is trying to do. That was enough for me.”

“I like what Sam is trying to create in terms of the stability and professionalism. He is trying to change it from what there was previously. He wants to give the players here and the club the best opportunity to win something. He wanted me to be part of that.”

Newcastle block Dyer's move to West Ham

West Ham manager Alan Curbishley has revealed the club's attempt to sign Kieron Dyer has been blocked 'at the 11th hour' by Newcastle.

Dyer seemed set for a switch to Upton Park after the Hammers had agreed a fee - believed to be £6million - for the England midfielder.

But Curbishley insisted the deal was now 'definitely off' to his great frustration.

He said: 'We made an offer, had it accepted, agreed personal terms and the player passed a medical but it was pulled at the 11th hour by Newcastle and there's not much we can do about that.

'It has never happened to me before. We are disappointed and the player is very disappointed but it's definitely off.'

It remains unclear whether Newcastle had asked West Ham for more money after the London club had been promised £2million in the settlement over Carlos Tevez or whether a higher offer had then come in for Dyer.

Curbishley, who saw his side come back from behind to defeat Roma 2-1 at Upton Park in the final pre-season friendly, also insisted the Hammers had made efforts to keep Tevez.

He said: 'I'm disappointed he didn't want to come back to us. We tried but he decided his future is elsewhere. So all I can say is thanks for what he did.

'I don't believe he was the only player here last year but obviously had a big say in things.

'He knew we were keen for him to stay, but once Manchester United came in he decided his future was elsewhere.'

Substitute Dean Ashton netted a 68-minute winner against the Serie A side who fielded Francesco Totti among other well-known names, after George McCartney's header had cancelled out Ludovic Giuly's first-half opener.

Ashton had been sidelined for a year after suffering an injury during an England training session but looked fighting fit by brushing past defender Max Tonetto and beating the goalkeeper with ease.

Curbishley said: 'He must be so happy the way it's going for him. It has been a long year for him but he now comes in on Monday morning and says `I have thrown a marker down, it's up to you to decide whether you are going to pick me'.'

Summer signing Scott Parker is described as only 50-50 to make the opening day clash with Manchester City next week.

Curbishley said: 'I was expecting him back by now but if he doesn't make the first game he should be OK for the second.'

somehow i think of some conspiracy theory in this football transfer..

so West Ham stopping Tevez going Man U.. but afte FIFA ruling, Tevez joined Man U.. but Man U still not happy, so they sell Smith to us in "undisclosed price" but condition snub West Ham of getting hand on Dyer..n

lol... so West Ham r played out by Man U at the end.. Man U r the hand behind... haha..

Although Dyer, who nurses an undisclosed liver complaint and has a history of hamstring and shin trouble, passed a day-long medical at a London hospital on Thursday, West Ham sent the England midfielder away unsigned yesterday, complaining that Newcastle had reneged on an agreement reached on Wednesday by increasing his price at the last minute.

The two clubs had agreed that West Ham would pay £5m plus a further £1m related to appearances but that basic £5m was raised to £7m shortly before the player was due to put pen to paper.

Sources close to Dyer - who first suspected a hitch when Newcastle failed to return West Ham a signed copy of the originally mutally approved transfer forms - appeared pessimistic that the deal could be revived last night. However, they were adamant that he will not be returning to Newcastle. It is understood the only way the 28-year-old will join Alan Curbishley's team is if Mike Ashley, Newcastle's owner, lowers his total demand to £6m.

What seems peculiar about the affair is that Newcastle - who declined to comment last night - were widely regarded as having pulled off a coup in collecting £6m for the injury-prone Dyer, who earns around £60,000 a week at St James' Park.

Another player almost certain to be missing in Newcastle's start to the Premier League at Bolton is Owen, whose thigh injury may also see him struggle to be involved in their home date against Aston Villa the following weekend. With the trip to Middlesbrough at the end of the month viewed as his likely comeback date, the striker seems destined to miss England's friendly with Germany on August 22.

"It doesn't look as encouraging with Michael as we first thought. He's strained the muscle and it's not healing as quick as we'd like," explained Sam Allardyce, Newcastle's manager, who completed the signing of the former Brazil international defender Claudio Cacapa on a free transfer from Lyon last night and is now pursuing Manchester United's Mikael Silvestre and Wigan's Leighton Baines. "There's no point in making any rash decisions about getting him ready for the start of the season. It's about getting him 100% fit for the continuation of playing football matches on a regular basis. That's what we want."

This aim has been undermined by Owen's lack of pre-season involvement. He has played 45 minutes, in a win at Hartlepool, for Newcastle this summer before straining his thigh in training. "Michael's as disappointed as me, he's desperately short on games and missing them is costly," lamented Allardyce.

Newcastle's manager fears he may have missed out on signing Silvestre from Manchester United. Although Allardyce is believed to have agreed a £6m fee with United for the left-back, Silvestre turned him down due to Joey Barton's presence at St James' Park. Manchester City's Ousmane Dabo is Silvestre's best friend and the victim of an alleged training ground assault by Barton at City. Newcastle are hoping the arrival of Silvestre's former team-mate Smith may change his mind.

Smith signed a five-year contract yesterday. "People might be surprised I've gone for Alan Smith," admitted Allardyce. "But I just couldn't turn my back on a player of his quality. He's a very versatile player who played three or four positions very successfully for Manchester United."

Smith though hopes to be regarded principally as a striker: "I've come here to be versatile, the manager's told me I'll have to play in a few positions and I enjoy playing in midfield but, if someone asks me my best position, it's striker," he said.

Enrique has joined Toon

Aug 5 2007

by Steve Brown, Sunday Sun

NEWCASTLE have signed one left-back, according to reports in Spain, but could be on the verge of landing another – and it’s NOT Leighton Baines.

La Liga side Villarreal claim to have agreed a £4 million, five-year deal with United for Spanish Under-21 international Jose Enrique; their club website read: “We want to thank Jose Enrique for his contributions to the club and wish him much luck in his footballing career.”

But after the Magpies’ £5 million bid for Baines appeared to fail, Sevilla’s Serbian star Ivica Dragutinovic remains hopeful of securing a £2.5 million, three-year move to Tyneside after rejecting the offer of a new contract with the UEFA Cup holders.

“I am happy in Sevilla but the English offer is very important in all aspects, not exclusively in terms of money,” said the 31-year-old.

“It really is very complicated to reject the chance to join Newcastle. I have always wanted to play in England, the league is strong and for men like me the physical aspect is not a problem.

“I know English football and Newcastle is one of the historic clubs and the objective will be to fight for a European position. The coach (Sam Allardyce) tried to sign me for Bolton during my stay in Belgium (with Standard Liege) so I am not unknown to him.”

nice.... welcome to Newcastle:D

Dyer back in tow

Latest Allardyce quotes re: our number 8:

"We in the end decided that Kieron was under-valued, we lifted the valuation to what we thought was realistic, and West Ham didn't want to roll with it.

"So Kieron is back with us in a squad that is growing.

"He signed a lengthy contract, something happens and it doesn't work, we come back and get on with it. It's not a hard life - it's a very pressured life, but it's not a hard one!

"He comes back, you go forward ? if West Ham don't increase their offer then clearly they don't value him as highly as we do.

"West Ham are not as upset as we are about West Ham. Curbs started it - we are more upset than them, and that's a fact."

Smith sees off Samp

Newcastle 1 Sampdoria 0

New boy Alan Smith marked the start of his third United career with a debut goal as Sam Allardyce's side ended their pre-season on a high note.

However on a day when Newcastle welcomed back Ameobi, Taylor and Butt from their pre- season injury problems, there was more bother in the fitness department.

With Tim Krul having departed for Falkirk 48 hours previously, Shay Given was forced to leave the field in the first half with a recurrence of his groin problem.

A scan will dictate the extent of his injury but Steve Harper looks like being between the posts when we open up our Premiership campaign at the Reebok next Saturday - and with Krul apparently not-recallable, the untried Fraser Forster could find himself on the bench.

After a bright opening from the Italians which saw Given pull off a noteworthy save in the opening stages, debut duo Viduka and Smith both came close to breaking the deadlock.

The second period saw Smith remain on the field while his former Leeds colleagues Milner and Viduka were replaced.

A dubious linesman's flag halted celebrations in the 51st minute after Smith netted from close range at the Gallowgate end - but there was no disputing his firm header eight minutes later from Geremi's corner.

Genuine goal chances were lacking after that point, but Harper tipped over a late effort while Martins was spared the embarrassment of a point-blank miss by another linesman's flag.

Aside from the players used against Samp, new boy Cacapa was spotted warming up on the field at the interval, while impending signing Jose Enrique watched the game from the Directors Box.

After the game Sam Allardyce commented:

"For me it's been an excellent week. We've signed three players on - the last one will be finished off tomorrow.

"Jose Enrique I think will join us by tomorrow morning or afternoon by putting pen to paper. And with Claudio and Alan before him, we have added a lot of quality and potential.

The Newcastle boss also spoke about Michael Owen and seemed to indicate that the England striker wouldn't be seen in senior action for the club until at least our third game - against the Smoggies:

"...but not fit enough to play first-team football without a couple of games behind closed doors, or Reserves.

"Forty-five minutes at Hartlepool is all he has had. Now it's a question of playing as many 90-minute football matches as he possible can, and to start with that won't be in the first team.

"Perhaps if he gets involved for us, and gets an extra game with England under his belt, it might be what we need."

PS - injured duo Emre and Duff were also seen in SJP on Sunday - the former having returned to England after treatment on his ankle injury in Germany.

NUFC: Given (Harper 38), Carr, N'Zogbia, Rozehnal, Taylor, Butt, Geremi, Solano (Martin 46), Viduka (Ameobi 46), Smith, Milner (Ramage 69). Subs n/u: Pattison, Luque, Edgar, Huntington, Troisi, Carroll, Forster, Cacapa.

Crowd: 23,078 including 100 travelling fans who were corralled in the middle tier of the Leazes towards the North West corner and made a racket for the whole afternoon.

Big Sam's joy at landing Villarreal ace

SAM ALLARDYCE today completed the £4.2m signing of 21-year-old Spaniard Jose Enrique Sanchez Diaz – and then set his sights on the last piece of his jigsaw in the shape of Serbian defender Ivica ‘Drago’ Dragutinovic.

And the United boss was still catching his breath today after what was a whirlwind weekend, even in his vast experience, in which United snatched Enrique from under the noses of both Manchester City and Liverpool.

Big Sam could not hide his delight at getting Enrique on a five-year contract even though it cost him 6m from Villarreal.

Even though he had to virtually break off negotiations for Drago when he was alerted that the Spanish outfit were willing to let him have Enrique.

Allardyce told me today: “When we get Enrique signed it will finalise an excellent few days for us. As far as Dragutinovic is concerned, if it is still a possibility then I will try and pursue it this week.”

Story continues Continue story
ADVERTISEMENT

Allardyce will be hoping that even though United do not have the £6m they were expecting to bank for Kieron Dyer it will not stop him signing Drago for £2.5m from Seville.

And, speaking for the first time about Enrique, Big Sam told me today: “We will be getting a very experienced central defender to go with a very talented and experienced Premiership player in Alan Smith, who knows what it takes to win a championship, and also a good central defender in Cacapa.

“In Enrique we have signed a player who has huge potential at a very good age and who has already broken into the first team at Villarreal.”

The signing of Enrique and the hoped-for arrival of Drago means it looks as though Allardyce has lost patience with Celestine Babayaro and nobody can blame him for that.

The Chronicle reported in our later editions on Saturday that Allardyce has turned his attention to Enrique and Drago after making a £5m bid for Leighton Baines – £3m down and £2m at the end of the season.

This bid was accepted by Wigan, but Allardyce was aware that Baines wanted to go to Everton – and this looks likely to be the case.

United turned to Drago, and negotiations were so advanced on Friday night that it was reported in some quarters on Saturday that the 31-year-old Serbian international had actually signed.

But when Allardyce was informed that Enrique was up for grabs it was all systems go for the Spanish Under-21 left-back.

Allardyce added: “Either our chief operating officer Russell Cushing or chairman Chris Mort got a phone call which said the player was available.

“I asked the price and said “go” and they went. And in 24 hours he was here.

“Russell Cushing and Chris Mort are the reasons Enrique is signing for us rather than Liverpool or Manchester City.”

Meanwhile, the only downer for Allardyce was the breakdown of Dyer’s transfer to West Ham after the London outfit said that United had hiked the price up from £6m to £8m.

The Chronicle said on Saturday night that West Ham would not resurrect the deal, and Dyer is still a United player – leaving a lot to be sorted out once the dust has settled.

Newcastle midfielder Geremi wants to captain the side on a full-time basis after leading them out against Sampdoria.

The Cameroon international played in central midfield in the absence of the injured Joey Barton as the Toon won 1-0 and he says he wants the skipper's armband.

"It is a huge honour to captain a big club like Newcastle United, even for just one game," he told the Evening Chronicle.

"Of course I would like the job on a full-time basis and I feel I have the qualities to do that.

"It is important as a captain to lead the team inside and outside the dressing room and on and off the field.

"It is a full-time position and you have to take responsibility in all areas. I have done it for my country and I could do it here.

"It wouldn't be a big problem for me to do the job as captain. But the decision will be the manager's decision and his alone."

Michael Owen has already expressed interest in the job, while Barton could certainly be a candidate on his return from injury.

Previous skipper Scott Parker has departed for West Ham.

counting away the injuried players... Owen, Luque, Given, Barton, Emre.

In Attack
only wonder who will lead the front line this weekend?
Martin had been very lively in pre-season matches.
Smith was great on the debut match.
viduka not too sure.. maybe not yet have good rest after the Asia cup
ameobi, scored 2 in reserve match on monday

i think martin and smith will get the nod ahead of the others

In Midfield
Milner and solano are definately on the wings. CM maybe could be smith and butt (if geremi play RB?)
if not should be butt with geremi?

In Defend
cacapa and enrique juz join.. so maybe not match fit yet.
taylor and rozehnal are confirm starter..
Carr or geremi on RB.. but should be carr from the look of it..
zogbia play very well on LB role for the past 2 matches.. so a likely starter, unless Big sam wan to go for enrique

milner switched to the left....

Left Is Right For James

By Craig Hope

JAMES Milner says he is more than happy going into the new season on the left-wing having won glowing praise from boss Sam Allardyce during pre-season.

The 21-year-old has been both a creator and scorer of goals during United's warm-up matches, with Big Sam suggesting the former Leeds youngster could be the answer to England's left-sided problems.

And it is on the left where Milner has operated during pre-season, Juventus' international full-back Jonathan Zebina enduring a particularly torrid time at the hands of the Toon winger.

Milner could start in the same position for Saturday's curtain-raiser at Bolton, and the England Under-21 star admits he is enjoying his new role.

"I don't mind playing on either wing and I'm delighted with how things are going," he told Newcastle World TV in an exclusive interview.

"I played quite a bit on the left for Leeds and I can use my left foot which obviously is a big help.

"I'm also enjoying it on the left because I can cut in, like my goal against Celtic, as well as get to the by-line and use my left foot to cross.

"Hopefully it causes some problems for the full-back not knowing which way I'm going to go."

And the Leeds-born player admits he is improving all the time, especially given the quality around the Magpies training ground following a busy summer in the transfer market.

"It's nice to be out there again and working hard in pre-season," he added.

"Playing with these players I can only get better and I can't wait for the season to start because I'm feeling good.

"There is that much quality around now that you can only learn everyday in training."

Every season can only envy other teams that have spending power to build a strong team, finally its Newcastle's turn... Feel so excited for the new season to start.... My ideal first 11 is as follow

---------------------------Given---------------------------
Carr---------------Taylor-------Cacapa/Roz---------Baba/Enrique
Solano------Geremi(Cpt)--------Butt-------------Nzo/Milner
--------------------Owen---------------Martins---------------

But that would mean that the likes of Emre, Luque, Smith, Viduka and Barton vying for first team places... This is the excitement that I am looking forward as we have plenty of players to choose from. Are our squad considered deep compared to chelsea or arsenal this season? Definitely YES!

From the Sun, Thursday:

NEWCASTLE have been the subject of a takeover bid one month after Mike Ashley’s £131million buy-out.

SunSport can reveal a group of Chinese investors negotiated to take over the Toon and hand billionaire Ashley a £20m profit.

An American-based investor also declared an interest in rivalling the Chinese bid.

A Toon insider confirmed: “Ashley got this club relatively cheaply and is now being offered the chance to make a big profit.”

Ashley decided not to sell.

NEWCASTLE United trio Michael Owen, Emre and Celestine Babayaro all returned to light training on Thursday following their injury lay-offs.

The three are not expected to figure at Bolton in Saturday's Premiership opener, but are back on the training field and working to improve their fitness.

"They're not back in training with the lads yet," Big Sam told Newcastle World TV.
"They're back in training seperately, working and keeping fit and improving their injuries by circulating blood through those injuries which helps speed up the healing process."

Magnusson: Magpies should be embarrassed

West Ham chairman Eggert Magnusson has criticised Newcastle over the collapsed Kieron Dyer transfer and said the Magpies must have been 'embarrassed' at their handling of the deal.

Dyer's move fell through after Newcastle, having initially agreed a £6million fee, raised the cost of the player by £2million.

Magnusson, who also outlined his ambition for West Ham to break into the top four of the Premier League within four years, said he was amazed at the sudden price increase.

He told PA Sport: 'The fact that Newcastle moved the goalposts in the middle of the game is not how to do business.

'They had given us permission to speak to the player, he had had a medical and we had agreed a fee when we received a phone call that they wanted £2million more for the player.

'We could not believe it and I think some of the people there seem to be a little bit embarrassed.

'But I think the deal is now gone and I feel very sorry for the player, he wanted a move, he wanted to come closer to his family in Ipswich and now that has gone.

'I think this business with Newcastle has shown that we are not prepared to pay any price that a club puts on a player. If there are perceptions that we will do that, they are not correct.'

Magnusson did make clear however that other players could be on the way t Upton Park before the transfer window closes as West Ham have their sights set very high.

Magnusson added: 'The club have ambitions and we want to break into the top four within the next few years and we have to invest money - it doesn't happen otherwise.

'Those are our ambitions and that we believe they are entirely realistic otherwise I would not be here today.

'We are going to have a new stadium and that is something we are going to make happen, hopefully by 2011.'

The Icelandic businessman said he had complete faith in manager Alan Curbishley being the right man to take West Ham forward.

Magnusson said: 'There is no question in my mind that he has got what it takes to get us to where we want to go.

'He is West Ham through and through but it's also a big challenge for him.

'He has come to a bigger club after many years at Charlton and he now has much more money to spend than ever before.'

Magnusson admitted that the first season had been a roller-coaster.

The Icelander added: 'Every morning there seemed to be something new to deal with.

'There was the Carlos Tevez business, the fight against relegation, it has been an ongoing battle but we are looking for a fresh new start with a new promising season.

'Staying in the Premier League was the best thing about it and the emotions were very special for sure. There is enormous excitement at West Ham now - and also back in Iceland - for the new season.'

time for wtf news...

Exit claims grow I:
Nobby bubbles on

Further to Thursday's story about Nobby Solano's desire to sign for West Ham, one of our Peruvian readers confirms that the player has spoken on the radio in his native country about the move and how he's looking forward to linking up again with Parker and Bellamy.

Friday's Chronicle claimed that the 32 year-old was anxious to make the switch to the south east in order to be reunited with his wife and family.

Nothing from the club as yet about this.

and wtf no. 2

Exit claims grow II:
Luque looking for Laurent linkup

Another story that's being doing the rounds is the departure of Albert Luque back to his native Spain.

The club in question is Levante, the "other" club in the city of Valencia and current home to ex-Mag Laurent Robert.

Claims of both a loan and a free transfer (to get him off the wage bill) are being made.

Again, no confirmation from NUFC so far, but the player was quoted in the Spanish paper Las Provincias as saying that:

"I believe that we will soon be in Valencia. I have attended some meetings this week and I expect something to be sorted out."

Sam: Why Geremi is to lead

GEREMI is the new Newcastle United skipper – and he’s not keeping the seat warm for any of the club’s injured players.

And as a result the 28-year-old Cameroon international, who has chalked up 85 appearances for his country, will have the honour of being United’s first foreign full-time skipper.

And speaking for the first time on why he opted for Geremi, Sam Allardyce told me from United’s team headquarters in Manchester today: “He has had a long and illustrious career, and is a fantastic signing for us.

“He leads by example on and off the field, and is a fantastic communicator as he speaks English, Spanish and French.

“It’s easy for him to get his message across, and I couldn’t be more happy with him.

Story continues Continue story
ADVERTISEMENT

“He has won League titles in England with Chelsea and in Spain with Real Madrid and, as far as I am aware, he has an Olympic gold medal with Cameroon.”

Geremi will succeed Scott Parker – who left St James’ Park for West Ham United this summer – as captain.

And the former Chelsea Middlesbrough and Real Madrid man is absolutely delighted at being given the armband by Big Sam, having settled straight into his new career at St James’ after his free transfer from Chelsea in June, and having led the team out in the friendlies against Hull and Sampdoria.

Allardyce had plenty of candidates to choose his skipper, but three of them – Shay Given, Michael Owen and Joey Barton – are all injured and will miss the start of the season, while Nicky Butt must also have been in the running.

Steven Taylor would have loved the armband, but at 21 Allardyce obviously considered his central defender too young and inexperienced – but his day will undoubtedly come.

Bob Moncur, who along with Alan Shearer and Kevin Keegan is one of United’s greatest skippers in modern times, thinks Geremi has been an excellent choice by Allardyce.

He said today: “Geremi will be in the thick of things this season and he is just the man to lead United out.”

Newcastle looks very good offensively. Their only weak point could be in the goalkeeping department.

TrueBeliever_jh
12-08-2007, 12:05 AM
alright!

good game.. bolton came back strong in attacking in the 2nd half.. but we managed to shield them off.. though lose defence but we still managed to keep the scoreline that way..

man.. if Joey Barton and Owen were playing.. wonder how strong our attacking will be..

but still comfortable 3 pts right to the end of the match...

and i vote Martins' first goal of the season. the goal of the month(not week)

overall i thought newcastle did pretty well, never mind that we play slightly more defensively during the second half. the defence is much improved as compared to last season and during the first half we totally outplay bolton. lets not forget that we haven't won away against bolton for a very long time so this is really a very encouraging start to the season.
