Distin quits Man City for fresh challenge
Defender Sylvain Distin has quit Manchester City to seek 'a fresh challenge'.
The stylish French defender has informed Blues officials he will seek a new challenge this summer after five years with the club.
Distin's decision to snub a massive contract offer had been widely expected, even though former boss Stuart Pearce took a risk in letting the 29-year-old see out the last year of his previous deal in the hope of persuading the former Newcastle player to stay.
However, after much deliberation, Distin has opted to leave.
'It has been an incredibly tough decision but in the end, I just feel I want a fresh challenge,' he said.
'I have had five very enjoyable years at City and I wish the club all the best for the future but I want to play somewhere different.
'It is time for a change and it is time for me to move on.'
The news is a blow to City, who are expected to confirm the appointment of Claudio Ranieri as Pearce's successor within the next fortnight.
Distin missed just one Premiership match last season and finished third in City's player of the year poll.
It is thought their contract offer would have made Distin the highest-paid player in the club's history.
However, the centre-back, who formed such a solid defensive partnership with captain Richard Dunne, has privately stressed his decision is not to do with money.
Already half a dozen Premiership clubs have expressed an interest, while extensive talks have also been held with one top continental outfit.
Although Distin is flattered to be courted by the stature of the European club involved, it is almost certain he will stay in England, with Portsmouth the most likely destination.

Chelsea have confirmed the signing of Reading midfielder Steve Sidwell.
Sidwell will join The Blues on a free transfer following the expiry of his Royals contract on 1st July.
Jose Mourinho has always been in the box seat to land the former Arsenal trainee, who also interested Newcastle.
Sidwell passed a Chelsea medical this week and will now return to Stamford Bridge for pre-season training at the beginning of July.
Sidwell's signing could be the first of three new signings at Chelsea this summer, with chief executive Peter Kenyon revealing recently that the club are also in the market for a defender and striker.

Skysports.com can reveal West Ham star Nigel Reo-Coker has handed in a transfer request.
The Hammers skipper has decided to ask for a transfer after a meeting with the club to discuss his future.
Reo-Coker, who helped the club achieve Premiership survival against all the odds, has decided to move for pastures new after he was not given the right assurances over his future by the club's board.
The dynamic midfielder's advisor Tony Finnigan confirmed Reo-Coker had handed in the transfer request and he expressed his surprise that West Ham were willing to let the player leave Upton Park.
"I can confirm that Nigel Reo-Coker has officially handed in a transfer request with West Ham United football club," Finnigan told skysports.com
"Nigel hopes his future will be resolved in the next few weeks.
" I am surprised that a 22-year-old Londoner who is captain of his club is being allowed to leave.
"As I said on Sky Sports in January, Nigel would get his head down and work to keep West Ham in the Premiership.
"And that is exactly what he did with 100 per cent commitment.
"At the end of the day he never felt wanted but I am sure he will have a bright future elsewhere."

Eto'o admits Liverpool admiration
Barcelona striker Samuel Eto'o has admitted 'it would be wonderful' to play in front of the Kop for Liverpool.
The Cameroon striker, 26, has been linked to the Reds in recent weeks, with manager Rafael Benitez said to have placed him at the top of his summer shopping list.
Eto'o insists he is not aware of any approach being made by the Champions League finalists, but revealed his admiration for the club and its fans.
'The great thing about Liverpool is their team spirit - it is very strong,' he told the Sunday Mirror.
'But, for me, it is their fans who win matches for Liverpool because they have so much power.
'They are fantastic. Any player would love to have those types of fans behind him.
'I have played at Anfield in the Champions League quarter-final so I know all about their fantastic supporters.
'It would be wonderful to have that kind of support as a Liverpool player but I really don't know what will happen in the next two years.'
Eto'o believes he will still be at the Nou Camp next season, despite his much publicised falling out with manager Frank Rijkaard earlier this year.
He added: 'I have not heard anything from Liverpool or anyone else. These things don't come through to me.
'I'm only thinking about next season and I will be here next season. But every year that passes things become a bit more difficult.
'English football has changed a lot for the better over the past few years. I've seen English teams playing matches which have been very exciting.
'I love the way the fans in England get behind their team. I respect their mentality.
'They are so positive in supporting their own team rather than, as happens in Spain, being against the opposition.
'That's the big difference between England and Spain.'

'Rafa told me I won't be sold' - Crouch
Peter Crouch has been reassured about his Liverpool future by manager Rafael Benitez.
The Spaniard has stressed the need for the beaten Champions League finalists to spend big and spend quick this summer.
But England striker Crouch, linked with a possible move to Newcastle, is adamant that he has not been earmarked for the exit door at Anfield to make room for new signings.
'He's (Benitez) told me I'm part of his plans and that's good enough for me,' Crouch told Sky Sports News.
'At a club like Liverpool there's going to be competition for places, especially as the manager likes to chop and change.'
Last season Crouch battled for a starting place up front with Dirk Kuyt, Craig Bellamy and Robbie Fowler.
Fowler has not been offered a new deal and Bellamy has been strongly linked with a move away from Anfield but Benitez is bound to bring in replacements so it seems likely that Crouch will face a renewed threat to his place next season.

Reo-Coker aims to reject Spurs for £9m Arsenal move
Jeremy Wilson
Tuesday May 29, 2007
The Guardian
Nigel Reo-Coker is fending off interest from Tottenham to hold out for the possibility of a move to Arsenal or Manchester United. West Ham want about £9m for their captain, who submitted a transfer request after feeling he was not part of Alan Curbishley's long-term plans.
It is understood that Tottenham have signalled their interest but the 23-year-old appears to have set his sights on moving to a club in the Champions League. Reo-Coker's adviser, Tony Finnigan, yesterday confirmed that the midfielder would be leaving West Ham this season after just over three years at the club. "He is going and there is a lot of interest," he said.

9m is a pretty good price for a 23 year old club captain. Personally i really like him, he really drives the team on single handedly. Very hardworking as well.
If he had not asked for a move, he would be priced well above 10million for an Englishman. Proven player as well.

It's because of your new stadium isn't it, i think Wenger has that in his mind before he can spend. Settle the debt first while filling Emirates every week, from there the finances and dividends will come slowly.

SPURS TO BID FOR GIGGS
IT WOULD rank as the summer's cheekiest move - but Tottenham are set to make an audacious bid to land Ryan Giggs.
The 33-year-old Manchester United star is viewed as the ideal addition to take Martin Jol's young side forward.
Spurs are believed to have made an inquiry for the Welsh international during the January transfer window but the approach was rejected as United pursued honours on three fronts.
United manager Sir Alex Ferguson insisted Giggs stayed. And both he and the player said at the end of the season that Giggs would remain for 2007-08.
Giggs has his eyes set on the club record for appearances set by Sir Bobby Charlton and Fergie realises that even though he may lack the searing pace that was once his hallmark, Giggs still has much to offer to United.
Spurs hope Giggs will see a move south as a challenging finale to a glittering career.

Barcelona have offered Samuel Eto'o to Arsenal as a makeweight for Thierry Henry, according to reports in Spain.
Spanish daily Marca claims Barca are ready to part with the Cameroonian striker plus €25million (£17million) in order to bring Henry to Camp Nou.
The report says negotiations between Barca sport director Txiki Beguiristain and his Arsenal counterparts are already well advanced.
It also says the deal has met with approval from Arsene Wenger and the two players.
Eto'o's future has been the subject of speculation for some time and he has expressed a liking for the English game.
Henry has continued to be linked with Barca following Arsenal's disappointing season, even though he signed a long-term deal with The Gunners last summer.
Wenger guaranteed that his talismanic captain would not be sold earlier this month, while Henry has assured fans previously that his future remains in London.
Barcelona have yet to confirm whether there is any substance in the report, while Eto'o is currently away on international duty with Cameroon and has not commented.

Its probably the best deal Arsenal can get for a departing Henry. 17m + a ready made, proven replacement.
Brilliant deal. Buts its too good to be true. A straight swap with no cash involved sounds more likely. Eto'o's value is probably higher than Henry at the moment. The only thing is he wants to leave Barca.

Henry was the best player in the world, but that was until 2 years ago.
He's coming 30, appears to be slowing down, and looks quite disinterested. Maybe he needs a new challenge somewhere. Eto'o is 26, at his peak, ideal candidate to replace Henry in terms of style and finishing. It might not be bad business, you know. Probably bad point is he might make the dressing room a unhappy one.

Don't you guys feel you tend to play better when Henry is not there to howl and growl at them to pass the ball to him? I'm talking about the recently concluded season. Pple like Fabregas and RvP can express themselves more without getting an earful from the captain for simply taking a shot which end up off-target. He's still a wonderful player to have though, provided he plays for the team.

Henry give them the killer stare not because they did not pass to him, but most likely because they did the wrong thing in his book, eg. they should have release the ball earlier, they should have taken the shot themselves.
Henry is a captain for God sake, he has every right to give a players a kick up their arse if they keep giving possession away or mis placing passes. But maybe because he is not a born leader, he is not the vocal type, so he came across as a moaning ******* to many with his sulking face. This season has shown us how important a proven goalscorer like Henry is. Fabregas and co. can create a million chance per match, but having Adebayor up front is not going to help matters.
spykid
30-05-2007, 11:37 PM
That's fair enough. It's abit like Roy Keane in that manner, though quite different ways of expressing themselves as captain.
I'm not talking about goalscoring, it's him being captain with the effect he brings. On hindsight, Henry probably shouldn't be given the captaincy. Your best player doesn't mean you have to be captain. I have never seen him howl and growl at his team-mates so much before he was given the armband, thus with the added responsibility. Let Toure or Gilberto have it, and Henry can do what he does best. But i guess Wenger won't retract that bah.

The Italian succeeding in guiding Parma to safety after being handed the job with the club in a seemingly hopeless position in January.
Understandably, Parma were keen for the former Chelsea coach to stay on.
However, at a meeting with club officials on Thursday evening, Ranieri informed them he was leaving.
"Claudio Ranieri has informed the club of his intention to leave his role as first-team coach," confirmed Parma in a statement.
"The club would like to thank him for the precious work he carried out, which resulted in keeping Parma in Serie A. We wish him success for the future."
The move appeared automatic once Ranieri had spoken in gushing terms about the challenge that awaits him as Stuart Pearce's successor at City.
Ranieri told Gazzetta dello Sport: "The Manchester City challenge reminds me of the experience I had at Chelsea where without spending £1, we build a good team.
"I created the Chelsea miracle from nothing. My achievement convinced (Roman) Abramovich to buy the club. Then, mountains of money came as well as a selection of top players."
Although it now appears automatic Ranieri will eventually end up with the Eastlands outfit, it could be the end of next week at the earliest before he is formally installed.
Having initially given the impression a deal would be concluded for former Thai PM Thaksin Shinawatra to buy the 29% stake of chairman John Wardle and business partner David Makin by the end of this month, talks have dragged on, with paperwork now being handled by the former Thailand Prime Minister's lawyers.
Although Shinawatra's advisors have insisted the process will not be halted by the damaging ruling in Bangkok on Wednesday that their client had been involved in electoral malpractice, a verdict which prevents him taking up any political role for five years, an irrevocable undertaking to buy Wardle and Makin's shares, without which Ranieri cannot be appointed, is not expected for at least another week.
With an outline pre-season programme in place but unannounced, City officials remain relaxed about the situation, believing there will only be need for concern in terms of potential signings should the matter remain unresolved by the beginning of June.
And, as Ranieri has now turned his back on Parma, an element of certainty is becoming apparent.
Although Ranieri is unlikely to receive anything like the windfall Abramovich provided, a transfer kitty of £50million has been suggested, which would at least allow City to compete for players at a level they were unable to do during Pearce's two years in charge.
So committed is Ranieri to the idea of managing City, he has already set his sights on tackling Manchester United, whose manager Sir Alex Ferguson has already seen 11 Blues bosses come and go during his illustrious two decades at Old Trafford.
Ranieri continued: "The idea is to face Manchester United as soon as possible and be at the same level as them in the standings.
"With Manchester City, I hope to complete every stage. This time, I have been chosen whereas before, Abramovich found me at the club."
Given City have not won a trophy of any description since 1976, competing at the same level as United appears a fanciful notion, especially given the work Ranieri finds he needs to carry out when he eventually takes up the reins.
Former captain Sylvain Distin has already left, with controversial midfielder Joey Barton set to join him should Newcastle meet the £5.5million figure stated in the England international's contract.
At least one, and probably more, new striker is a top priority considering City's paltry goals return last year, while the midfield and defence will also need reinforcing.
Ranieri though is enthused by the challenge.
Having experienced life in both Spain, with Valencia, and Italy, with Parma, since leaving Chelsea, whom he guided to the Champions League semi-finals in 2004, Ranieri is in no doubt England is now the place to be.
He said: "At this time, English football is a fascinating window that hypnotises you.
"Some of the richest men in the world would do ridiculous things in order to buy an English club because the Premier League has become a luxury stage.
"To return to England means to be at the centre of something important."

Ranieri quits as Parma boss to take City role
Claudio Ranieri last night quit as Parma coach having earlier confirmed his intention to succeed Stuart Pearce as boss at the Eastlands outfit, providing prospective new owner Thaksin Shinawatra pushes through his takeover plans.
So committed is Ranieri to the idea of managing City, he has already set his sights on tackling the giant of Manchester United, whose manager Sir Alex Ferguson has seen a procession Blues bosses come and go during his illustrious two decades at Old Trafford.
'The idea is to face Manchester United as soon as possible and be at the same level as them in the standings,' he said.
'With Manchester City, I hope to complete every stage. This time, I have been chosen whereas before, (Chelsea owner Roman) Abramovich found me at the club.'
However, at a meeting with club officials yesterday, Ranieri informed them he was leaving.
'Claudio Ranieri has informed the club of his intention to leave his role as first-team coach,' confirmed Parma in a statement.
'The club would like to thank him for the precious work he carried out, which resulted in keeping Parma in Serie A. We wish him success for the future.'
That process has proved painfully slow for City fans anxious to know who is going to be in charge of their club next season.
Having initially given the impression a deal would be concluded for Shinawatra to buy the 29% stake of chairman John Wardle and business partner David Makin by the end of this month, talks have dragged on, with paperwork now being handled by Shinawatra's lawyers.
Although the former Thailand Prime Minister's advisors have insisted the process will not be halted by the damaging ruling in Bangkok yesterday that Shinawatra had been involved in electoral malpractice, a verdict which prevents him taking up any political role for five years, an irrevocable undertaking to buy Wardle and Makin's shares, without which Ranieri cannot be appointed, is not expected for at least another week.
With an outline pre-season programme in place but unannounced, City officials remain relaxed about the situation, believing there will only be need for concern in terms of potential signings should the matter remain unresolved by the beginning of June.
And, as Ranieri has effectively turned his back on the opportunity to remain with Parma, who he guided to Serie A safety following his arrival in January, an element of certainty is becoming apparent.
A transfer kitty of £50million has been suggested, which would at least allow City to compete for players at a level they were unable to do during Pearce's two years in charge.
Having experienced life in both Spain, with Valencia, and Italy, with Parma, since leaving Chelsea, whom he guided to the Champions League semi-finals in 2004, Ranieri is in no doubt England is now the place to be.
'At this time, English football is a fascinating window that hypnotises you,' he said.
'Some of the richest men in the world would do ridiculous things in order to buy an English club because the Premier League has become a luxury stage.
'To return to England means to be at the centre of something important.'

Chelsea reach deal with Bayern Munich's Pizarro
Chelsea have struck terms with Bayern Munich's Bosman prospect Claudio Pizarro.
The Times says Chelsea have agreed personal terms on a four-year contract worth £50,000 a week with Claudio Pizarro, the Peru striker, who will join them on July 1.
Pizarro, 28, scored 97 goals in 229 appearances for Bayern Munich and has been recruited to apply further pressure to Andriy Shevchenko and offer cover when Didier Drogba and Salomon Kalou are at the African Cup of Nations in Ghana, in January and February.

West Ham midfielder Nigel Reo-Coker would relish a move to Newcastle, according to his agent Tony Finnegan.
The midfielder is apparently desperate to leave the Upton Park club and submitted a transfer request last week.
He has been linked with a number of Premiership clubs since and with Scott Parker close to leaving Newcastle for the Hammers in an £8million deal, boss Sam Allardyce reportedly sees Reo-Coker as the ideal replacement.
The 23-year-old would cost around £8million and Finnegan told the Sun: "Sam Allardyce knows how to get in contact with Nigel and we would welcome a call.
"If Sam said he wanted to speak, Nigel would be on the train in a shot. It would be very interesting to see what his plans are for Newcastle."
Looks like Reo-Coker won't be coming to Arsenal. But then it is rather weird he targets Newcastle instead, when they are more or less on the same status as WM(No CL, UEFA cup):s22:
Perhaps the arrival of Allardyce gave him hope

Chelsea have made their second foray into the transfer market by swooping to sign Claudio Pizarro from Bayern Munich.
The Peruvian international has moved to Stamford Bridge on a free transfer, after his contract at the Allianz Arena wound down, and follows Steve Sidwell to the club.
Pizarro had been linked with a move to Juventus, but Chelsea stepped in to trump the Old Lady.
The striker wrapped up the formalities of his move on Friday and expressed delight at securing a transfer to Stamford Bridge.
"I think it's very important for me to win some titles and I have the chance here to win them," Pizarro told Chelsea TV. "The most important thing is the Champions League which I was looking to win with Bayern, but we didn't have the chance.
"I think now we have a good team, a good trainer and the chance to win it.
"I had some interesting offers, but the most important thing was that I talked to the coach, I talked to the people here, and they were very interested. We have many chances to win titles here and that's what I want."
Blues chief Jose Mourinho had been keen to boost his striking options, as he will lose the services of Didier Drogba and Salomon Kalou during next term due to African Cup of Nations commitments.

Bolton Wanderers boss Sammy Lee is ready to discuss a player-swap with Manchester United over his star striker Nicolas Anelka.
The Daily Mail says United chief executive David Gill met Bolton representatives this week to underline the Premiership champions' interest in the 28-year-old France forward.
Lee has told his chairman Phil Gartside that he would be happy to do a player-plus-cash deal with United. The Bolton boss is interested in striker Alan Smith and midfielder Kieran Richardson.

Barcelona are again trying to persuade Arsenal talisman Thierry Henry to join them this summer, according to Spanish reports.
The La Liga giants tried in vain to lure Henry from North London last year, but eventually he snubbed their advances and signed a new deal.
After a trophyless season at the Emirates Stadium, though, the Spaniards apparently believe they have a great chance of finally getting the French striker to commit to a move.
According to El Mundo Deportivo, Barca are hoping their advances will get agreement from Henry to move to Spain.
The Catalan daily claims Barca bosses Ferran Soriano and Txiki Begeristain are hoping to seal a deal this summer, and says contact has been made with Henry's camp.
It also says Barca could revive the four-year contract they had put in place for Henry last year.
Then it appeared almost certain he would move to the Nou Camp, but decided to stay in London after the Gunners lost 2-1 to Barca in the Champions League final in Paris.
Of course even if Barca did manage to get Henry's agreement for a move they would still have to persuade Arsenal to let him go.
One man who would love to see Henry at the Nou Camp is his former France team-mate Lilian Thuram.
He told El Mundo: "If Thierry Henry wanted to change clubs tomorrow it would be great if he came to Barca.
"It would be very good for the club because he is a great player and for him also because the way Barca play would be ideal for him."

Wigan boss Chris Hutchings aims to bolster his defence by making centre-back Titus Bramble his first signing at the JJB Stadium.
Bramble did not feature in Newcastle boss Sam Allardyce's plans for the Magpies so was released last month - and Hutchings is ready to pounce for the 25-year-old.
The Latics chief, who was handed the reins following Paul Jewell's decision to step down after keeping the club in the Premiership, needs to fill the gap left by veteran Arjan De Zeeuw's exit from the club.
Hutchings is confident he can get the best out of Bramble, who was in and out of the Toon squad during his stay in the North-East and has a reputation for making costly blunders.
If Latics have a bid accepted, however, it is likely to be matched by Fulham as Cottagers boss Lawrie Sanchez is in the hunt for a centre-back after being put off Liverpool's Sami Hyypia due to his wage demands.

LEGEND Luis Figo wants to finish his playing career with Tottenham - and has asked Martin Jol to sign him on a shock free transfer from Inter Milan.
The 34-year-old Portuguese star's agents have contacted Spurs officials in the last 24 hours to tell them he is desperate to come to White Hart Lane.
The veteran midfielder still has a year left on his Inter deal, but he is allowed to talk to other clubs. He was due to join Saudi side Al-Ittihad and pick up a £6 million contract, but that deal collapsed last week.
Now Figo has decided he fancies the idea of England and Tottenham are the only team he is thinking about, despite Bolton and Newcastle also being alerted.
A friend of the former World Player of the Year said last night: "Luis has always had a soft spot for Spurs and would love to live in London. He has seen other stars go to the capital and settle with their families."
Figo, who is looking for around £60,000 a week and a two-year deal, is due to decide on his next move by the end of the month.

TOMAS ROSICKY could be the first Arsenal star to leave this summer, with Atletico Madrid desperate to sign him.
With boss Arsene Wenger's future uncertain, many of the Gunners' big players are starting to look elsewhere and, if Rosicky goes, many could follow.
Rosicky almost moved to Spain before arriving in London from Borussia Dortmund for £6.8million and Atletico coach Javier Aguirre is hoping the confusion within Arsenal could tempt him to leave after only one season.
Thierry Henry stays at the top of Barcelona's wanted list.
William Gallas, Cesc Fabregas and Philippe Senderos would almost certainly look elsewhere should Wenger leave the club.

Werder Bremen have indicated that they are ready to listen to offers for star forward Miroslav Klose.
zoom - galleria
This comes as a softening of their stance after they had issued a 'hands off' warning a month back, after Klose had met with Bayern bosses in a Hannover hotel.
It is more to do with making a smart business decision, because Werder want to avoid losing him for nothing next summer.
Sporting director Klaus Allofs has admitted that the club are ready to cash in on the German international striker.
"If someone makes a call [to ask about Klose], then I won't hang up," said Allofs. "I would listen to everything."
"But that is true only for a certain time," he insisted, announcing a time limit on the negotiations. "When we decide that time has come, no more discussions will be held.
"Even if Bayern want to negotiate one more time [after that], that won't interest us any more."
Bayern are still keen to land him, despite already signing Luca Toni, as much to build a world class team as to weaken a direct rival ahead of next season.
However, Juventus and Barcelona have also expressed interest, and Werder would prefer to deal with a club from outside Germany, for obvious reasons.

The ex Anderlecht player has signed a five year contract.
After signing Czech players Hable and Mazuch, who signed a 5-year contract, Fiorentina have completed their third signing in two days: Belgian international defender Anthony Van Den Borre, from Anderlecht. The 20-year-old defender has signed a contract that ties him to the Viola for five seasons.
Vanden Borre was born in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, but has a Belgian passport and made his senior debut with the "Red Devils" in a friendly against Turkey in April 2004.
He can play at right-back and in central defence, and has been linked with a number of top clubs such as Bayern Munich, Inter, Barcelona, Juventus, and Tottenham Hotspurs.
Fiorentina are strengthening their squad with a number of talented youngsters, picking up Arturo Lupoli from Derby County recently as well. Chievo winger Franco Semioli is also expected to finalise a deal next week.

AC Milan have declared an interest in signing Thierry Henry, with the Frenchman's future at Arsenal as uncertain as ever.
The weekend press have been full of report linked the striker with a move to Barcelona, which is a rumour that appears to never go away, but it seems Milan also have a hope of bringing Henry back to Italy.
The former Monaco and Juventus star had a disappointing season with the Gunners due to injury and despite signing a new contract one year ago has done little to dampen the speculation as the future of both Henry and manager Arsene Wenger appear up in the air.
"Our will is to sign a midfielder and a forward," Carlo Ancelotti told the Italian press. "You know of the names that are circulating.
"There are lots of big-name strikers, but there is nothing concrete as these players are playing for big teams.
"Henry is a great player and is among those who could be of interest to us."
While refusing to offer anything definitive on rumours suggesting that Milan had already reached an agreement with Emerson, he said: "I have not confirmed names and do not wish to, but Emerson is a player with the characteristics that would be useful for us."

Bolton manager Sammy Lee insists that he will not be letting go of his best players.
The Red Devils have been linked with the French international as Sir Alex Ferguson looks for a front-man ahead of next season.
Dimitar Berbatov had been linked with a move earlier, but after splashing £50million already this summer, another big money signing looks unlikely for United.
Ferguson is keen to focus on quality talent available on the cheap, and the former Arsenal, Real Madrid, Fenerbahce and Manchester City man seems to be amongst the best of those.
It was reported that Bolton might be ready to to business, but manager Sammy Lee insists he will be doing his best to keep his top players.
"We don't want to lose our best players," Lee told the Daily Express.
"It is my job to keep a healthy camp with the desire to be successful.
"The chairman is in the process of talking to current players where we can tie them up on long-term deals."
The futures of Tal Ben Haim and Jussi Jaaskelainen are also in limbo at the moment.

FORLAN: PRICE TAG COULD BE ISSUE
Who? - Diego Forlan
Where is he? - Villarreal
Who is he linked with? - Sunderland
Former Manchester United striker Diego Forlan has played down talk of a return to the Premier League. The Villarreal star has been linked with a move to former Old Trafford team-mate Roy Keane's Sunderland side, but believes the £18million release fee will prove a problem. "It's all very flattering, but we would have to see whether someone would be able to cough up," he told the Daily Star Sunday. "We'd need to talk about who can actually meet this release clause, and we're talking about a lot of money."

Cesc Fabregas has stated that his future at Arsenal remains firmly intertwined with that of his manager, Arsene Wenger.
Amidst talk of interest from Real Madrid in both men, and with Thierry Henry strongly linked with Barcelona, Fabregas has further admitted he could be forced to consider his future should some high-profile figures leave Emirates Stadium over the summer.
The departure of former vice-chairman David Dein has been the catalyst for unrelenting speculation about Arsenal's crown jewels, even if Wenger has publicly stated he will not be leaving North London in the summer.
Fabregas also signed an eight-year deal in October to signal his commitment to the club, but Arsenal's youngest ever player and goalscorer has warned that if his manager leaves, he may also reassess his options.
"My future depends on Wenger," Fabregas told Marca.
"Now I am happy at Arsenal but if the coach leaves the club and also other players I would have to think again about my position.
"Wenger has shown much confidence in me since
