Changing to SNBB might not solve your woes. I am a SNBB 10Mbps user. Having problems with US servers lately. Currently, I can only download at 6-7kb/s (previously I could hit >100kb/s). I could download at 60kb/s at my office.

It's a "Known Secret" that ISP are capping speed for their various plan....

I've used Singnet 512Kbps, 1.5Mbps & then given "free" upgrade to 3Mbps....

While downloading files & BTs... Its very obvious that the higher priced plan is relatively faster... not necessary in terms of download speed though... but looks to me like the so called bandwidth is higher and enable more concurrent download....

However,... 3Mbps is never exactly 2 time faster than 1.5Mbps for sure.... only 20 to 50% faster at most .... Just like the clock speed of a CPU.

Very often, there seems to be a Maximum Sustainable speed cap for a given plan... irregardless of whether SH, Singnet or M1....

I've also noticed that this Maximum speed for a wireless broadband is for some reasons Much Slower than that of a Fixed Line ADSL....

A 3Mbps rated ADSL line is for sure Much FASTER & More Stable than that of a 3Mbps rated Mobile Broadband....

Depending on location, signal strength, and available bandwidth, speed cap, etc... a SH 7.2Mbps mobile broadband can at times crawl like a slow 512Kbps ADSL or even a 56Kbps dial up services - Like it or not.... though I'm pretty sure our ISP can do something to narrow this speed gap.

Or perhaps our Singapore ISP should not be allowed to further advertise "misleading & mostly un-attainable" Mobile Broadband Speed Rate???

SH/M1/Singnet could simply just tell users that their Mobile Broadband is only 512Kbps or 1Mbps instead of the advertised 3.6 or 7.2Mbps.... Why don't they just be honest and do so in the first place???? Nothing to hide right????

calvin_
10-09-2007, 09:50 PM
aiyah don't say their maxonline. i also use until dulan. stream videos and music so slow tmd. stuck with a contract no choice.

THIS IS THE 60DD4M|\| PROBLEM WITH A CONTRACT. 2 YEARS CONTRACT MEANS YOU SUCK THUMB FOR 2 YEARS.

my starhub prepaid line laggi worst, certain hours cannot even call out. email them so many times everytime tell me the same thing. 8 to 11 pm sia tmd.

Shun99
10-09-2007, 11:27 PM
I wonder if this is considered SH didnt provide their part of the contract. i know many people will say that the subscription plans say "upto xxxkbps" but

1. given the fact that MOL6000 is faster than MOL12000 for overseas sites, Premium subscribers pay more and are short-changed

2. when the bandwidth check is consistently so low such as 7xkbps (less than 100 kbps), meaning that it is less than 1% for Premium or less than 2% for Express, it is way too low compared to the suggested max b/w and should not be acceptable

thus we should be allowed to break the contract becoz they fail to provide reasonable performance compared to the advertised figure.

Now, have cabletv, football channel, 1 Mbs broadband, HDD recorder for $41/mth.
No difference in speed between maxonline express and free broadband, ie still slow as ever.

this thread is so messy, i dun think starhub would ever care about reading them. somebody must do a consolidation report menz....

Shun99
14-09-2007, 01:37 AM
honestly, starfug connection to UK has always been very slow. i tried it last year before renewing my contract (before the notebook promotion starfug speed is still ok). speedtest to USA e.g. LA, NY, Chicago WAS always getting 1000+kbps even during peak hours! now... be lucky if get over 100kbps. -.-

after re-contract, its all downhill. but recently is the worst. crawling speed. upload was always 300+ but now is obviously capped to 200+ or below! there's something going on there. grrrr

i suggest everyone call them and tell them we have been monitoring the speed for quite some time now, and its not individual problem and affects many (if not all) of their customers so don't try to wayang about router or config problem. if they suggest overseas is beyond their control, then ask them why other ISPs such as Singnet and Pacnet can get much better test results. if they say is earthquake or watever, ask them why does it take so long for them to re-route coz we PAID for the service and we are severely affected by their poor performance. tell them about the threads started in HWZ. if they dont do anything about it, im sure its gonna deter potential new subscribers.

we should also consider complaining to CASE about this issue. juz becoz the "upto xxx kbps" does not guarantee a minimum speed does not mean u can give us such poor performance and it is a poor excuse to fall back on.

I'm gonna call again tomorrow, u guys pls do so too, and warn them sternly of the consequences.

thanx.

Why don't you all complaints collectively via http://comment.straitstimes.com/

This would be more productive as the complaints would be view by whole of Singapore. IDA, CASE and StarHub would feel the pressure and they would do something to protect their brand.

BUT I have to say that I really despise Singnet as a company: I hate their plans and bundling, it is near impossible getting a clear answer as to how much it really costs, how much it will cost once the promotion ends, etc

IDA has replied to my earlier complaints regarding my complaints about Starhub.

They said that they conduct monthly performance monitoring for all the local ISP.

Attached is the LINK (http://www.ida.gov.sg/publications/20061213184450.aspx)

IDA (http://www.ida.gov.sg/) website,

To help consumers make an informed choice, IDA monitors and publishes the performance of broadband plans here. There are three main indicators to look for price, throughput and latency ......

i think dead duck should be happy already, since its being tested against CA server

mayb he should try it agnst local server and see what speed he will get....

and ya depends on his computer hardware also...

lousy hardware might result is lousy capability to attain top speed as well,

setting and tuning need to be done to those tcp/ip setting... the default setting is limited and sucks most of the time...

is there an official thread to launch a complain to Staurhub?

There are some murmurings within this thread and this one:

http://forums.hardwarezone.com/showthread.php?t=1719809

However, I don't believe Starhub will do anything about the problem even if they do monitor this forum. Nothing personal, but that's just the nature of big business vs. the powerless lone consumer. This is Singapore and not America. We don't have a pro-consumer culture here. For the number of complainants in this forum (say 30?), 99.99% of existing Starhub cable subscribers will just take it quietly without a peep. And you know what? By December people will have lost interest in this and similar threads and they will just die and fade away into archived history. Starhub won't worry about 20 odd people jumping ship to other ISPs. It's going to take numbers in the order of hundreds before they will sit up and take notice. You think that's going to happen?

I'd be happy to be proven wrong though.

If i am not wrong, the reason for the slow speed for starhub user is because of cable broken again.(in taiwan? )

I think they are working day and night to fix the cable. So it should take at least 4-7 weeks to fix the cable(just like what happen this earlier year which affect singnet also)

suntzu
26-09-2007, 01:39 PM
Well, this is a lame excuse.

Slow means slow. If a major cable broke, others would be affected as well.
How would you explain why SingNet and PacNet is not affected?

Why MaxMobile is faster than MaxOnline?

Isn't the responsibility for Starhub to reroute the broken link?

StarHub should openly explain to their supporter why they are slow on Straits Times.

actually they are not slow, just that starhub buys bandwidth from known providers who traffic shaped their bandwidth.

suntzu
26-09-2007, 03:04 PM
Heard from their engineer FK that the StarHub pipe utilisation is hitting 99% from 7pm to 12 midnight and he keeps complaining to his management that they need to buy more bandwidth. So instead of buying more bandwidth they buy sandvine to do a full throttling but still cannot solve the problem.

Anyway, SingNet and Pacnet are more ethical in doing business. They buy more bandwidth when needs arise.

StarHub is saving money so that they can earn more profit.

gundamz
26-09-2007, 04:34 PM
yucks. When they advertise 'big fat pipe' ads back then... it turn out to be a congested pipe now.
If starhub know their pipe had been fully filled up, they should buy more bandwidth since maxonline is one of their core services too. I don't think they want give up in this broadband market and drive all their customers to singnet and other ISP..

singnet has 2 OC12(622mbps) lines connecting directly to western usa, pacific net uses singtel for routing overseas traffic that is why both pacific net and singnet are faster than starhub. starhub buys most of their bandwidth from NTT and they do not have a direct line from singapore to usa.

suntzu
26-09-2007, 09:02 PM
So, who's to blame? Starhub right!

Cause they are going via the cheapo route.

We as a consumer don't bother which route or which upstream providers!

We are only interested in speed and if SingNet and Pacnet can do it.

Why can't Starhub? So, the verdict is they are putting all their subscriber on their cheapo route and making unethical money.

This is short changing all their supporters!

singnet has 2 OC12(622mbps) lines connecting directly to western usa, pacific net uses singtel for routing overseas traffic that is why both pacific net and singnet are faster than starhub. starhub buys most of their bandwidth from NTT and they do not have a direct line from singapore to usa.

R u referring to Pacnet ADSL line connection? What about their cable connection? Are they routed the same way?

Ya, I would think that it would probably take at least 20 years before StarHub can catch up the speed that SingNet deliver.

However, I am not giving up so easily.

I felt that there are more and more StarHub internal folks helping to post good results here!

Was wondering whether does StarHub has a Guru that can tweak their system to run faster than SingNet?

Have or dosn't, so long as upstream b/w pipe is choked, of cos is to deploy throttler to limit b/w la. Thats the sensible solution then tweaking here and there, end up result still same.

can tweak lar hha but then starhub should at least give us a constant "minimum" speed then they can promise us as a guide...

what's the point if testing is 12 mbps and download even with accelerator is like maximum 1000k with DAP... and i dun wana talk about torrent speed, its horrendous even with lan cable plug in... =.='

i saw singnet people even getting 1mb per sec and above with good sources quite easily on average... for those who use maxonline premium should at LEAST getting like 1-2 mb for torrent as well but unfortunately we cant...

Residential internet plan is the most lowest priority what. Especially when internet connection is not known to be cheap(not just within ISP to customer, but oso for the upstream). And a biz 512k connection can also be roughly the cost of MOL Ultimate.
Precisely why there is no guarantee, and it does not really have to perform there.

Pay attention enriqueyang, do not listen to such talk of lowest priority for residental internet plans for even StarHub's own press release states that:
Singapore Becomes First Country in the World to Commercially Launch 100Mbps Residential Broadband Service Nation-wide Using DOCSIS 3.0 Technology (http://www.starhub.com/portal/site/StarHub/menuitem.876159666306d8a8aa494b608324a5a0/?vgnextoid=99301840a0e3c010VgnVCM10000038425a0aRCRD&vgnextfmt=ItemCMId%3Ab0b5f81f69170110VgnVCM100000474114acRCRD#top)
Combining the DOCSIS 3.0 access with the VELOCITY programme, StarHub has created a dual-mode network profile for each MOL cable modem connection:
1. A full-speed profile, for accessing locally-hosted content such as those provided by VELOCITY partners;
2. A prescribed-speed profile, for accessing other Internet content hosted overseas at the price point customers prefer;Concurrently, broadband speeds to access non- Velocity sites will be based on the customer's subscribed plan via the prescribed-speed profile (i.e. up to 6Mbps for MOL Express and FlexiSurf Express and up to 12Mbps for MOL Premium).Again, MOL Ultimate users equipped with a 100Mbps-ready cable modem will get two network profiles – full-speed and prescribed-speed – that will enable them to get broadband speeds of up to 100Mbps regardless of whether they are accessing Velocity or non- Velocity websites.StarHub promise and claim many things, but do they deliver?

Good, this shows that StarHub senior management are monitoring this thread actively. We would need more of your posting of result so that they can pressurise and stress out their Engineer to tweak their QoS confirguration for the SpeedTest server in LA.

Anyway, hope they would resort to this dirty trick to stress out their Technical staffs.

Don't think they did anything, maybe that is an isolated case. Look at my speedtest results above and you will see the speed is still as miserable.

If you monitor the thread close enough, you will notice that something is happening for the SpeedTest server in LA.

Obviously, they are trying something now but not successful because the actual problem is "Bandwidth not enough!"

The only way to solve this issue is to PUMP in more money to buy more bandwidth and not buying more SandVine. Think StarHub CEO has to allocate millions for the next FY before public outcry.

Bandwidth Throttling is useless if the bandwidth has Maxed-Out the current bandwidth capacity.

Which is one month later and running on maxonline Ultimate plan. No wonder I keep getting disconnected from my WoW server due to high latency (5 times in a span of 5-10 minutes).

Why no posting on PacNet?
