Since there's a significant interest in metal in this forum, let us share good metal music. What are your favourite bands? My favourite bands are Opeth, Symphony X and Death. After hearing their music I can't help but feel that all the other music out there are weak in comparison. Opeth is simply the most consistently good band ever; you can see how highly rated they are in Rateyourmusic and AMG. Symphony X has the best vocalist, best guitarist, best keyboard player, best bassist and best drummer ever, and The Odyssey is the best song ever. Death has the best guitar riffs ever, although they are a bit on the too progressive side so I guess many people will not like them. I recommend anyone with interest in Heavy Metal to check out these bands.

I'm quite new to the whole genre but I'm enjoying it ever since I was introduced to it. Been listening to metalcore a lot more than metal though...

To me, Metal is not all about sounding heavy. If I want that, I can listen to early Napalm Death and grindcore metal. I prefer good song writing and good melodies and I think Iron Maiden is 1 of the best in the business.

Some bands that I listen:
Iron Maiden
Sepultura
Cathedral
Megadeth
Metallica
Trivium
Mastodon
Helloween
Kreator
Napalm Death
Queensryche
Manowar

And some
Slayer
Death
Morbid Angel
Sucidal Tendercies

Want to try Arch Enemy next and maybe COB

FLSH_Metal

Iron Maiden
Children Of Bodom
Cradle Of Filth
Morbid Angel
Slayer
Megadeth
Stratovarius
The Black Dahlia Murder
Judas Priest
1349
Black Sabbath

Not all under heavy metal, but they are all classified under metal :)

I'm surprised no one's mentioned Pantera or Lamb of God yet :D

Anthrax was awesome, and I really liked their collaboration with Public Enemy...

Also very impressed with Otep... Her growling vocals make Corey Taylor sound like a little girl... Check out their video for Warhead on youtube...

Don't know if Motorhead counts as metal, but I like them too...

Dethklok is my guilty pleasure... I really like Thunderhorse, Go into the Water and the Murmaider :P

I listen to these bands regularly:
Metallica
Megadeth
Iron Maiden
Cacophony (Marty Friedman's old band!)
Symphony X
Children of Bodom
Every Time I Die (not sure if they're really considered metal)
some Sonata Arctica
Dream Theater
Judas Priest
Suicidal Tendencies
Mastodon (actually, I only like Iron Tusk from Leviathan)
Trivium
Slayer

Also, if you guys are tired of all those annoying poseur-ish rock bands pretending to be hardcore/'metal', you might enjoy this video... Featuring Brian Posehn and Scott Ian of Anthrax... There's even a little tribute to Megadeth's Peace Sells music video :P

wrong. metal is also short for heavy metal. however, heavy metal can also refer to classic metal from the 80s and so...but generally, metal is just short for heavy metal.

so its still right, to call say...death metal heavy metal.

We are talking about great guitarists, not guitarists/vocalists. True, there are no shortages of people who can play as fast if not faster than suicmez or romeo, but speed =/= good. How many can play as fast as romeo and still be as clean?

well, its...death metal, thats why some guttural vocals are barely audible. i dont listen to the more dissonant melody lacking extreme metal stuffs like deicide or anything else, and i dont listen to black metal.

you should really listen to ATG...they probably are one of the pioneers of melodic metal/metalcore today. ALOT of melodic metal bands these days cite them as an influence.

well, if you like heavy/thrash metal...and cant stand death/black metal yet...

i suggest something along the lines of classic metal like Iron Maiden and Judas Priest.

For thrash metal, of course get some material from the "big 4"...Slayer, Metallica, Megadeth and Anthrax.

from there, i will assure you you will proceed on to much heavier stuffs.

cheers and stay metal. \m/

wow first entry here.. anyone listens to DT? i think they're very decent and will be watching them in jan! best keyboard player is definitely DT's Jordan Rudess.. Symphony X doesnt have very decent vocals in Paradise Lost as well.. Russell Allen sounds a tad bit too strong on the vocals considering that their genre of music is closer to power metal and should have vocals that are a tad bii cleaner... Opeth is indeed consistently good and is very very ernest in their desire to make good music..most unfortunately they will never come to singapore in their near future.. :(

The thing with sepultura is that after Chaos AD...they aren't the same anymore.
Choosing to be more Nu-Metal instead.
I mean on roots; Johnathan from Korn was invited for guest vocalist.
To me, Max was leading Sepultura in a down spiral.
Him leaving is actually for the better.
Look at Soulfly / Nailbomb...its band with Max which is not exactly progressing anywhere.
Green is actually not a bad vocalist. Just have to give him a chance and not read too much into reviews and throw everything you know about Sepultura out of the window.

Sepultura's sound is constantly evolving from Morbid Visions right to Roots, every album has a different sound and feel. I have Nation and I think its so so only.

BTW, I'm not a fan of Sepultura or Max, just like their music and I find CC's 1st album is good.

I still feel that the only Maiden compilation worth buying is the Best of the Beast 2CD set, though I did break down and buy Ed Hunter many years ago :)

I think the 2 CD Essential Maiden is a good buy cos it has the nice songs from X and XI. So no need to buy hese 2 albums liao. =:p But hardcore Maiden fans will buy them anyway.

This is what I listen to:

Power:
Avantasia (opera metal supergroup)
Control Denied (with Death's members in it)
Dark Moor
Divinefire
Firewind
Iced Earth (with progressive, thrash, speed metal influences)
Lost Horizon
Myrath (power melodic progressive influences, VERY similar to Symphony X)
Outworld
Royal Hunt
Sonata Arctica
Symphony X (prog/power)

Progressive (favourite genre so far):
Ayreon
Circus Maximus
Devin Townsend/The DT Band
Dominici (ex-Dream Theater vocalist! his voice has changed quite abit too)
Dream Theater (!!!)
Fates Warning
Green Carnation
John Petrucci
Liquid Tension/Trio Experiment (basically Dream Theater without vocals/Trio = without Petrucci)
Opeth
Pain of Salvation
Porcupine Tree (I know not metal, but close enough Prog Rock, they just kick ass)
Riverside
Threshold
X Japan

Death:
Continuo Renacer (jazzy progressive death instrumentals)
Disarmonia Mundi (with Soilwork members IIRC)
Sculptured
Wintersun (progressive/melodic death influences, can't wait for their newest album "Time"!!)

Metalcore:
Darkest Hour

Heavy:
Dio
Iron Maiden

Thrash:
Metallica
Megadeth

Misc:
Ensiferum (good black metal)
Mammatus (excellent doom)
Electric Wizard (another good doom/stoner)
maudlin of the Well (avant-garde) now called: Kayo Dot
Subterranean Masquerade
Turisas
Yndi Halda (some good post-rock)
Muse (yeah!)
The Cure (really great rock)
Led Zeppelin (do I need to say more?)
An Endless Sporadic (unsigned Progressive/Rock/Metal band, featured on Guitar Heroes III)

*Bolded ones are the better bands I like =p

Basically I think metal is quality music. Not to put down other genres, but I just can't get of the "metal zone", it's like once you're in it you're addicted to it like drugs(in the good way)! Post more people, I hope my list helps you guys to expand your music horizons!

Your list has a disturbing lack of Black Metal in it......... I recommend you to get the following albums now:

Immortal: At the Heart of Winter, Sons of Northern Darkness
Emperor: In the Nightside Eclipse
Diabolical Masquerade: Death's Design
Moonsorrow: Kivenkantaja
Keep of Kalessin: Through Times Of War, Kolossus
Burzum: Hvis Lyset Tar Oss
Limbonic Art: In Abhorrence Dementia

And I recommend you to get Disillusion: Back to Times of Splendor. Every Prog-metal fan must have it.

If you love Opeth then chances are you'll love Agalloch. Provided you don't mind the fact that their songs are more repetitve. Do check out The Mantle.

BTW Ensiferum is not Black Metal, it's melodeath like Wintersun. If you like these 2 bands you must check out Amon Amarth - With Oden on Our Side.

And if you don't like Black Metal you still should check out Immortal, cause they're really awesome.

You were right man Edguy IS pretty damn awesome. Hellfire club is a must have for power metal fans. Loved it especially for The Piper Never Dies, it's an epic 10/10 song.

Disillusion - Back to Times of Splendor is indeed a must-have for Progressive Metal lovers, loved it much!

To melodic death/power metal fans, Raintime is the band for you as they combine clean and harsh vox into their songs and make it more interesting to listen to.

Before all the american metalcore bands surfaced, Swedish bands like CARNAGE, NIHILIST, DISMEMBER, ENTOMBED, DARK TRANQUILITY & AT THE GATES are the forefathers of those kind beats that nowadays american metalcore tried to play. That was like almost 20 years ago by now. Pay homage to the real forefathers of such style! Even IN FLAMES are not in their league!

i think you need to include Death and Vader in that list haha. without Death, there is no death metal.

wif all due respect to de bands u mentioned...cant really blame any1 for their ignorance or even aware of their existence. tbh..onli ENTOMBED/DT tat me've listened to..& for de latter me still does till now.

de new generation of youth..probly dig INFLAMES/COF/LOG etc etc...simply bcos de influence by their peers introduction..or thru self discovery.
mind tat there are loads & loads of bands out there..be it old or new...or whether they're still active till now...hmmm..me wunder if KREATOR still ard these days.

oh well..at de end of de day..indiv pref. varies...sm may dig it..sm juz dont..
cant force any1 to really like..wat we like to listen to..& vice versa as well.
wats impt & always be...rock nvr dies...& metal rules. period. :D

So damn true man
Usually when buying CDs, i look out for the special/limited edition version. Its worth the money spending that extra dollar just for extra specials.
But sometimes, special edition packages are :S you know.. crappy packaging and all, lol.

I planned on getting AE's Rise Of the Tyrant album days weeks ago but I think i have to delay the process a little. Cause i just spent the money getting LOG's Walk With Me In Hell DVD :S

DVDs are really worth the money imho. Get to watch their documentary and performances, best thing ever.

Btw where do you usually go to when purchasing metal records? O_o

i think you need to include Death and Vader in that list haha. without Death, there is no death metal.

Yes, Death is 1 of those bands that starts the deathly sound of metal in those days. Scream Bloody Gore is undisputable. Then Death move on to shape the American Technical Death Metal where their original and revered raw and simple chords were left behind for the rest to pick up and continue the haunting death metal style expansion. While Vader, they were the forefathers for european brutal death metal style. To choose between Vader and Death nowadays, I prefer Vader 150% more. Nothing beats up a morning glory in the MRT on a huge headphone listening to VADER's straight to the face kinda death metal. Their music is an inspirational source to pick up a fight!

Anyway, about the Swedish metal bands for the beginners, Entombed, Carnage, Nihilist, Dismember are those bands that represent the Stockholm sound. They are just raw, sometimes dabble with the fine line of punk beats and dirtier sound while Dark Tranquility & At The Gates represent the Gothenburg sound where they emphasize more on technical and very melodic chords plus cleaner studio sounds.
