[Interest Check] Flash DIR-300 to DD-WRT session

What will we be doing
Basically it is a session where DIR-300 owners gather and get their routers flashed to DD-WRT firmware. So if you think the original firmware cannot suit your needs. You might want to give DD-WRT a try. Or you have the burning desire to flash it to DD-WRT but you don't know how to do it, come over.

Who will be involved
Currently, three person will be helping out with the flashing (richneo, liangtam, shadowandy).

When would it be
If there are sufficient demands, it will probably be one of the days from the 7th (evening) to 9th of December. Yes, weekends only.

Where would you all be at
Don't know. Still scouting for a place where there are sufficient power points and cosy enough to stay for a fair bit of time to do the flashing.

How much would it cost
Free. If you wish, you can treat them a cup of drink.

What are the risks
There is a risk of bricking the router. Bricking means that the router won't be functioning anymore. No risk, no gain. If bricked, don't hold the people responsible. They have flashed their own DIR-300 to DD-WRT successfully so their chance of success should be higher.

Why would I want to flash to DD-WRT firmware
DD-WRT offers functionalities which the original firmware doesn't come with. For the feature list of DD-WRT, refer to here (http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/What_is_%22DD-WRT%22%3F#Features).


So do state if you are interested in this session. If the response is not good, then I think we might call this event off.

Sounds like a nice place. But I think we need somebody to check that place out. Most of the location are rather crampy with limited power plugs (e.g. starbucks, coffeebeans)

Try going to RC5, it solves some of the bugs. You can simply download the bin file and upgrade through dd-wrt's interface.

yeah, i'm concerned about this as well. it would be a major turnoff if the warranty is voided since Dlink's lifetime warranty is a big draw for many of us.

There is a way of flashing back to original firmware provided your DIR-300 is still bootable. Flashing DIR-300 back to Original Firmware (http://www.shadowandy.net/_html/archives/2007/10/flashing_dir300_back_to_origin_1.html)

Yes, you can choose not to go DD-WRT. DD-WRT only offers some additional features like QoS, xbox kaid (playing PSP games/xbox games with other people over the Internet), DynamicDNS, etc.

DD-WRT just add some functionalities which you can refer here (http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/What_is_%22DD-WRT%22%3F)

Both are fine. 5dbi antenna is a plus to your wireless signal strength

just got a DIR-300, happy user with default firmware actually.
Quite surprised with the coverage, i was using an old SMC2804 barricade and
coverage was bad in a 5-rm flat... the DIR300 gave me complete coverage right now

I just went thru the DD-WRT site, and it says I can push the TX power up to 281mW ?
has any one tried pushing it to the limit ? Is it stable @ 281mW ?

Bought on Monday, Tuesday came back and there's no internet whatsoever.
Had to unplug modem and router and it was fine after that.... is this considered CRASH?

frankly speaking, my unit is generally quite stable. ecept for the 1st 2 days have hang issues. it has been working fine till now. but i'm interested to flash it to dd-wrt to enhance the router even more even though it might brick the router. anyway i complaint is the restarting time for the router is very slow...

juz wondering, how cum last time the wrt54g can flash to dd-wrt to and fo without the need to access the redboot but juz flash thru the update feature in the configuration page, but fon and dir-300 need to flash thru redboot?

cos the firmware cannot recognise the memory thus the initial step to make the memory recognizable before u can actually flash the firmware in

and after u have flash it before, u can jsut flash the dd-wrt firmware to dir-300 over web based.

you use this guide http://www.shadowandy.net/_html/archives/2007/09/mini_flashing_guide_for_dir300.html ? anything different did you do? think on the first run i accidentally entered 'Default server IP address:' to '9600', towards the end of the guide. does it matter?

You'll have to ask shadowandy directly. I'm not expert in messing with embedded firmware. I've even accidentally made a mistake in saving the firmware without startup script and I've to redo the whole thing again. I've flashed 3 so far with no issues.

btw, i used tftpsrv instead of pumpkin. all the files i downloaded from http://www.dd-wrt.com/dd-wrtv2/down.php?path=downloads%2Fv24-sp1%2FConsumer%2FDlink%2FDIR-300/ . some of the addresses in my flashing process different from those in the guide.

Well, you have dd-wrt running right and it is routing your traffic and all? So I doubt your issue is with the flashing process because if it has gone bad, it would be a bricked router. Not sure you'll get any help here on this, either search dd-wrt forums for such similar issue or reflash again after a full reset.

actually it does not seems to work. connected to my WAN modem but cannot get WAN IP. tried to make changes to the settings but click button liao stuck at 'apply.cgi' page. reflashed back to original firmware 1.04, but read that the WPA support will not be available. so, quite sian.

now back at dlink 1.04 firmware but cannot use WPA for wifi.

need to restart modem? even if can connect to WAN, but if the save/apply cannot work properly also very difficult.

what is wpa2 supplicant? anyway to get back?

sounded logical. but how you know my firefox got addon har? haha. but for the fon that i flashed to dd-wrt, firefox can be use properly without the same problem. probably will try flashing the dir-300 to dd-wrt again and use IE see got problem anot.

actually for the laptop is used for flashing, the FF i used also no plugins and addons also. dont know why cannot. where you download your linux.bin from? got to wait til wkend then got time to try again.

i just connect my dir300 to my starhub motorola 5101 modem (using flexisurf).. everything seems okie>>flash my firmware to 1.04 liao

but my wireless connection keep dc-ing leh + it will not auto connect .

can i check with u gurus>> what is my problem??

is it my starhub modem , not capable of doing wireless or is my wdir300 got problem???
