Any1 got any idea how does the "network lock" on the camera works?

Is it everytime when u wan to turn on the camera function, it will prompt u for network connection to unlock?
If so, how long it takes for network to "checked" before u can use the function?

If u guys got jap frds who are using 920SH, they should be able to tell us.

Sorri, just curious although the above questions do not contribute at all....=:p

so Haonan, what you think is the fair price for 920sh without PSS Sim? :)

Hi nipponcraze :) Actually, that's a sensitive question I'm gonna ans u, cos I'm not willing to spoil the current market for the local sellers here tats bringing in the 920SH for the forumers. But all I can say is if u're getting a brand new locked set from places like HK Sin Tat Plaza, it should cost you less than 600SGD easily. If you're getting from Japan directly, it would even be much lower than that. That's all I can say.

Of course, when buying such exotic phones, u're also paying for 'after-sales support' from a reputable and credible local seller here. I don't want to name names, but you're prolly here long enough to know who's been here long enough, providing such sales on the market. Not everyone gets their stock directly from Japan, some go through 1 or even 2 middlemen from HK or Taiwan, thus for the mark-up or inflated prices. (this is usually the case for these japanese phone models, it's a sad fact but it's true, u're indeed paying for them at inflated rates due to middlemen resellers and suppliers)

All I can say is, if u're comfortable with the pricing from any of the sellers here that has offered you, just go ahead with it. No point saying u're willing to wait for prices to drop, because alot of things change within time and sometimes with that excuse, you might just never get your phone at all due to all that waiting. Or if you have relatives or friends in HK or Japan, just ask them to help u when they're making the trip there, it's always relatively cheaper there but you also have to count in the hassles + trouble travelling there, which is not always a common viable option for the average consumer like us, thus the scenario of where the local sellers here comes in, to take over as the role of sellers for these phones, as well as providing you 'personal warranty' and after-sales support for it.

Just my 2 cents on this matter, and I hope with this post I'm not offending anyone with it, nor do I have the intention to spoil any local seller's intention of selling their phones on this forum. Cheers. :)

Although I don't hav 920SH, but, i downloaded the manuals from the softbank website. In it did not mention anything of camera function being locked.
However, it did mentioned one thing for 1st time starting use of phone. That is to do a software update.
It could be the software update is the key to unlock the camera function and it might means that after the software update, the camera function might be able to use.:s11:

Well, one possible idea mooted earlier by a bro (can't remember who on the forum really), was that to use a valid softbank sim to do the reprovisioning and then use the sim-mod.

It MIGHT work, but until someone tries this, it remains a theory.

For me, only left the camera function to work in order for me to switch from 904SH to 920SH. I don't use MMS, internet, no changing of ringtones(always think using the ringtones from phone itself is good enough)....

the attractive thing of the exotic is not just the ringtones...Mainly is the design & advanced screen size/interesting interface...

not bery important to me can/cannot change to customized ringtone....:s13:

i found that the 3 themes that comes with it is not as nice as the default ones in 904sh, somemore there are no free themes to be downloaded unlike 904sh :s8:

at this moment, functionality wise 904sh is definitely better. if u r going for design and screen, then 920sh is the choice.,

Personally, I am in love with this phone. I just can't stop raving about the screen. Beats anything i've seen hands down.

However, i find it quite difficult to justify parting with my hard-earned moolah for a phone that can just only call and sms.

May I just ask if the 920SC with 5 megapixel camera is already out in the Asian region? Thanks.

The 920SC just came out in Japan on the 12th this month. From what I see, HK/Taiwan dealers are still not selling this phone yet. Actually if u're willing to wait, Samsung phones by Softbank usually gets software-unlocked relatively fast. So if u're willing to wait, u might be able to buy it non-crippled, meaning u can use all the functions on it, excluding GPRS/MMS of course.

920SC in terms of screen, camera and design as compared to 904SH... is still alitte behind.

The 5mp CMOS sensor from 920SC is still not as good as teh CCD 3.2mp from 904SH

screen wise, both are 2.4". while 904SH resolution is at VGA and 920SC is at QVGA

no doubt the 904Sh is almost 10mm thicker than the 920sc...

but in terms of specs and design, i giv it to 904sh :)

my personal view

For Softbank's Winter-season line-up models, in terms of their packaging policy there had been some changes made actually. I'm not sure whether it's due to the environment saving policy or the company's new-made changes for cost-saving mainly, but all Softbank models from the 920SH/920T onwards in terms of standard phone package, will have no AC adapter bundled at all. They are actually following in the same direction as NTT Docomo and au KDDI carriers in Japan actually in this aspect, since the other 2 carriers in the past all along don't bundle AC adapter in their standard phone package, it's avail as an optional accessory which you can buy yourself at their respective phone outlets in Japan.

I would say it's a good move, in terms of environmental saving and consumer sake. Some consumes upgrading from old Vodafone/Softbank phones to future models would prolly already have the AC adapter, so it isn't a huge issue to most of the consumers out there. However for those ppl who're first into the exotic scene, this could pose an issue for them of course. However AC adapters for Softbank are pretty easy to get, can just ask ur seller you're getting ur phone from to order for u.

Uh not exactly bro. Actually while in terms of camera specs, the 920SC does share the same hardware as the G800 avail locally here, 920SC actually sports some slight differences such as utilising a different display screen technology (OLED 2.4-inch QVGA vs TFT 2.4-inch QVGA) as well as 4 colors avail for it, as opposed to G800's only sole color, which is Gun-metal Silver.

This is also prob one of the first camera-phones out there to sport face-detection technology, apart from the usual P&S digicams out there on the market. More pictures of the 4 colors available here (http://k-tai.impress.co.jp/cda/article/news_toppage/36810.html).

the black and gold are like shiny surface with "poker dots"
unlike the silver, blue and pink which are brushed metal look...
the black and gold attracts fingerprints more than the brushed ones...

yes, its like 904sh, you download the theme and games with the softbank sim, but once you change simcard, it will be locked again.

jeg_elsker
24-01-2008, 01:52 PM
i c.. i'm not sure, but i think in this case, the application requires certain sim card to operate. chances are, the application is being load into the SIM card, or a certain key has been implemented into their SIM card that can unlock those application. If we can just take our sim card, and their sim card, compare the content, then fill in the "blanks" found in our sim card, we might have those application worked with our sim card. the thing is, it doesn't work as simple. lol.. even when reading data from SIM card, it returns byte array, not string >_<.

i'll try to google if there's anyway we can retrieve secured and unsecured information from one SIM and maybe injected them into different SIM. I'm quite skeptical about this thought, but.. who knows. If the cam and multimedia function works, I'll buy one 920SH. LoL..

jeg_elsker
24-01-2008, 01:57 PM
btw, this phone is from SoftBank, right? Have anyone say like in Japan, tried to use this phone with Vodafone card or NTT DoCoMo card to see if the cam and multimedia works? if it's only work on SoftBank card, then the answer might lies in that SIM. Is there a prepaid version of those SoftBank card? LoL.. kinda curious about this whole cam/multimedia-lock-thingy.. :D

Yes there are softbank prepaid cards which you can rent at NRT and HND airports, as well as a couple stores scattered across Tokyo. I once rented a softbank sim card last year to use on a 707SC while in Tokyo. But at the time, the mere thought of sim hacks and the like wasn't exactly prevalent in the exotic phone forums, so I was too foolish/ignorant. Besides, the 707SC is a software-unlocked.

There are a number of Softbank simcards which appear on the japan auction sites I visit regularly. Here's one such simcard on the yahoo auction site today:

http://img159.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/users/4/5/1/2/mamahiromin-img600x450-1200755281dscf4128.jpg
http://img159.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/users/4/5/1/2/mamahiromin-img600x450-1200755290dscf4129.jpg

What interests me is whether you could couple a Softbank usim card with one from your own local provider with one of these things: (also available, specially for the 920SH on the auction sites)
http://img211.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/users/4/0/0/9/kikukawa405-img600x450-11256054881.jpg
Apparently this allows u to switch between simcards and use their individual features (mutually exclusive though). So my hope is that you could use your regular local simcard to make calls, send sms, etc, but if you wanted to use the 920SH's other features, you could switch to the softbank card, should you decide to buy one.

I must admit my relative ignorance in this field and therefore humbly ask for the opinions of those experienced if you could shed some light on such a prospect. It sure sends sparks flying in my already very poisoned head. Reading up on all these japanese auction websites only poisons me more. Any thoughts?

jeg_elsker

hey... i kinda glad you responded to my post ^^.

the switching SIM is indeed a good idea, when you want to take photos or listen to music, we can just switch to softbank sim, and to make calls and sms, we switch back to our local sim. maybe the only problem is, when you actually want to listen to music or watch video clips (which i would surely loved to, especially on these huge crystal clear screen), people won't be able to call you, or you can't even receive sms. So you really have to decide when to use what SIM. which to me, it sounds quite troublesome >_<.

urm.. random question.. is there an external device that allows us to use more than 1 SIM in a phone? Can we use it with this phone then? So we can put both softbank SIM and our local SIM into it. I remember there's a Samsung model, that allows us to put two SIMs and have them activated altogether at once. Yes. If there's an external device for us to use two SIM simultaneously in one phone, we can overcome this problem already yeh? hehehe..

My original thought was, maybe the 920SH built-in feature (like the multimedia feature and camera) will verify the SIM whenever the application is started. Say that the verification goes like this. You open the camera, then the camera apps check if the SIM is softbank SIM. If it's softbank SIM, then allow the application to start. Otherwise, block the application. If that's how it verification goes, maybe we can inject an information to our SIM that says "hey, I'm softbank sim".

I'm currently working on a project that involves injecting and retrieving information to SIM card. If it works about the same, maybe the camera and multimedia application can really be unlocked.

But it's still very sketchy. Anyone wants to share thoughts and knowledge? Btw, i hope we didn't get way too off-topic, rite?

My apologies if it sounds off-topic ^^.

Well that's exactly why i was asking if anyone knew anything about it. I don't tinker with phones like the experts here. I just use the phones, hence my admittance to ignorance. Since no one has posted any thoughts on the issue, I'm assuming that no one's tried it out yet. I'm merely sharing something I've seen on another site.

i cut a piece of screen protector and pasted on the 920SH battery cover.
its very easy to open now. just wipe off any stains on the screen protector, clean ur fingers/thumb dry. i mean DRY! the friction btn ur thumb and the screen protector will make it easier to pull the cover down

that's my new method... i too thought the "nails" method is albeit dangerous... :s13:

I may be wrong but I don't think that's a secondary camera. It's the light sensitive diode/resistor that senses the ambient light conditions and then dims or brightens the screen appropriately. To see it in action, just set your backlight settings to auto dimming, then cover the diode with your thumb, in a few seconds, your screen will become gradually dimmer. Once you take your thumb off, in a few seconds, it will get brighter. I find it quite helpful when I open my phone in a dark room so the bright screen doesn't blind me.

Well, according to softbank's web: http://mb.softbank.jp/mb/en/product/3g/920sh/index.html

it says.. there's no secondary camera. "Not equipped with a sub-camera, therefore a user's face cannot be captured while conversing. "

I gave a low-down on the features and pros and cons of the 920SH before already, for those who haven't read it, it's here (http://forums.hardwarezone.com.sg/showpost.php?p=27601679&postcount=22). As mentioned in that post I'm pretty affirmative that there's no secondary camera on the 920SH for making video-calls, it's already been brought up and discussed before by the fellow owners on the japanese 2CH BBS. Not sure why Sharp Corporation took out such a basic feat in the 920SH though.

Not sure whether this is actually brought up in the forum b4. Some Chinese forumer mentioned that after the phone is activated once (not sure whether he means using an active Softbank USIM or the current SIM hack), you can switch to offline mode and use the cam and music player feature. If so, at least the cam feature is can be used to a certain extent.

However, the forumer said that you must not shut down the phone in offline mode, otherwise you will need an active Softbank USIM to on the phone and switch off the offline mode.

Anybody can verify the above?

Heard of Docomo 2.0 2-in-1 marketing? Perhaps not. It's basically signing up for 2 lines, to be used on one phone only. This one is literally the same meaning, except that whether you own 2 Docomo FOMA usim or 2 Softbank usim, u can use it both on the same phone. (don't mean it's unlocked, same rule still applies) What the auction is advertising, is that it has specified models for the 2-in-1 usim solution, for fitted usage with 920SH/822SH, 913SH or any of the FOMA 905i series.

today my 920SH died. I have a USIM-MEP message. I think it's the hypersim. Before this happened, I had set a phone password which i typed every time i booted up the phone. Today when I booted up the phone, it no longer asks me for the password. It just goes straight to Softbank flash animation, then "Offline Mode!" then the default wallpaper appears with the word USIM-MEP. Any ideas? I've had the phone a week now.

I believe it's your HyperSIM that's the problem, not your phone's hardware I believe. I believe Kuro mentioned before tat these kind of simhack solutions are very fragile in nature, and some product reiterations of such solutions have very low-made QC, might be prone to damages/malfunctions due to heat or other minor factors. And if ya interested to know, you're not the first one to have your HyperSIM failing on you though, I read a couple of these kind of issues on some TW forums already if thats an assurance to you.

So whoever u got your simhack solution from, time to go back for a 1-to-1 exchange with a brand new one. That's if the seller that sold u the solution had an exchange policy in the first place. ;)

Haonan, yes i've been reading up quite a bit on the USIM-MEP problems other people have been facing. I'm convinced it's the HyperSim. I do take excellent care of my phone and it's never subject to hard impact, radiation, vibration or anything else. I must say I used the phone in minus 15 degree C while walking outside yesterda and am wondering if the Hypersim just kills itself in colder weather. That being said, the phone was in my pocket any time i wasn't using it, so i'm sure it was warm.

I've contacted the seller and he's agreed to give me a 1-1 exchange. All I can say is that the seller (you know him well) is first rate and I'm just absolutely impressed with his service. ;)

Thanks for sharing your insight, bro. Much appreciated.

Bro cannot like that compare actually. Although the 920SH is logically the latest Softbank model by Sharp, you have to realise the phone can only be used for calling/sms function currently, so this is not a truly-working phone model with fully-unlocked features compared to say other Sharp models like 903sh/904sh. Not everyone needs a spectacular WVGA screen in a phone, especially if you can't even use the main screen for multimedia showcase or usage. Furthermore, I also didn't really understand/comprehend, why Sharp actually downgraded alot of features for this model compared to the previous series, which the 920SH was essentially the 4th-Gen iteration of the latest Cycloid-hinge 1-seg flagship model from them. Things like CCD sensor > CMOS sensor. Secondary Video-call camera > no Video-call camera. Dual-Stereo speakers > no Stereo speakers. Seriously is ... :s22: So other than the slim form-factor, and it's spectacular WVGA screen display, this phone is basically a duck here in Singapore, since we can't use 1-seg on this model, which is precisely something that Sharp had made and centered the functions ard this model for.

Hope this explains abit.
