I have always been using a compact cam for pictures but recently I was thinking of getting a better cam for better shots (i.e. better macro, longer zooms, etc). I'm usually shooting in the day, most of the shots will be landscapes/plants, some normal family shots.
I was thinking of buying a hybrid cam (no need to change lense). Or do you guys think buying an entry lvl DSLR is a better investment? What are the models/features I should look out for?
Thanks!

From what you are describing as hybrid cam, most will call it ultra zoom. For Canon you will have the Powershot S5 IS, SX100 IS. For Panasonic, it will be the FZ18.

please do not forget that getting a DSLR != camera with all mega zoom, macro, wide, etc.
You are just purchasing the sensor body.
The lens is like 50 or even 80% of the SOUL of the camera system. A good lens = min a few hundred(cheapo lens) to a few thousand (L lens). Multiply it for all the needs you have: zooming range, wide range, macro range.
The number of accessories needed is mind blowing. Next you will want a tripod, monopod, external flash, filters, more more more.
In simple words. DSLR is expensive. easily a few k setback if u want a full set of acceptable gear, not the good or decent gear even.
Buy buy buy syndrome is very hard to quit. My rusty old 2 cents.

think that getting a dslr would be a better idea as it really brings one more into the mood of taking photos. just the shuttle clicking sound is enough for me to click more

Yes, that's why I'm looking at entry lvl (e.g. Nikon D40) with an entry lvl lense before I embark on more expensive cams which can be very expensive.
