Hi guys,

Thinking of getting the DNS-323 for my 2 Maxtors. However, I have heard reports that the cooling fan is very wimpy.

This is a cause of concern for me because my hard disks run at 55+ Celsius without cooling.

So I was wondering if it would be possible to replace the included fan with something more powerful. Would an 80mm fan be fine?

Thanks.

Can also consider thecus n299 2 years warranty with a WHOLE lot more features.

Cooling-wise, how is it?

Well n299 does not spin down the hard drives when it's idle... This meant it has a higher average temperature. It's also using a mini-fan just like DNS-323 but n299's casing is plastic whereas dns-323 is steel which can help dissipate heat once the internal temperature hits a peak. Overall, DNS-323 is cooler for the drives.

However if you modify the plastic casing by adding your own fan(watch the vibrations...), you have better cooling but warranty might be busted....There are also ways to mod the DNS-323 too.

If your Maxtor's temperature is about 55 without cooling, it should also be about 50-55 inside the casing.

Did some research on the Thecus. I think I'd still prefer the D-Link DNS-323.

I was thinking of disabling the fan in the DNS-323 and use cable-ties to attach a 80mm fan to the outside of the NAS. This way, I don't have to drill or cut anything. Is this workable?

Can someone post close up shots of the DNS-323 from the rear and the interior? None of pictures I've seen so far on reviews show the actual behind face-on and the interior with the hard disks installed.

Someone's ugly fan mod without hacking... Trying suck the air out boosted by a larger fan.

I can confirm that the cooling fan on the DNS-323 is indeed very wimpy - it barely moves any air. During sustained testing, the case got extremely warm to the touch, almost hot and the interior case temperature rose to 36*C (ambient was 20*C). The DNS-323 doesn't have SMART reporting capability so I can't give you the hard drive temperatures.

Adding a larger fan isn't going to help without modding the case as the opening for the existing fan is very small and constrictive. The air is drawn in through the front of the case on the bottom along the system board and out the back. There isn't much opportunity of air to circulate around the hard drives, en though there is plenty of room between the two drives.

Hope this helps.

I m using 2 1TB Green drives and the temp are very good so much so that the fan never spins. So is dead quiet for me and I m very satisfied with the 323.

Can any 323 user using Singnet tell me how to port forward to 21. I tried but still cannot go to the FTP server. The gateway used is the 2700HGV-2

port forwarding is done via your gateway, the same as it is for BT client. :)

Hi, sorry to bug. Just bought the DNS-323 from D-Link. When I turned it on with just one drive, I see the fan was not moving at all. I figure I received the product with a broken fan. Actually I got it used on Amazon. You said the fan never spins? Does that mean that my item may not be broken at all? I am worried.

Thank you
Shiny

the fan is turned on depending on the temperature of your harddisk

if i am not wrong, if your harddisk is below 37 degrees, it will not spin

if it hits 37 and below 39, it will spin at low and and etc

Cool. Thanks for the info. One more question, on status page for the dns-323, the System Temp is System Temperature:
116°F / 47°C. Is that a good thing or bad thing. Sorry, I just dont know how to read TEMPs.
