From comingsoon.net:

James Gandolfini will play the mayor of New York City in Columbia Pictures remake The Taking of Pelham One, Two, Three, directed by Tony Scott and starring Denzel Washington and John Travolta.

Gandolfini will play a politican under incredible pressure to end a crisis when a packed subway car is ransomed by a criminal (Travolta) and his gang.

Post-"The Sopranos," Gandolfini shot the Spike Jonze-directed Where the Wild Things Are, and his Attaboy Films banner is producing an untitled drama that casts him as author Ernest Hemingway for director Philip Kaufman.

John Travolta is getting typecast as the psychotic leader of a villainous gang. There's been Swordfish, Broken Arrow, The Punisher, and Face/Off.

Synopsis from movieweb.com:

In "The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3," Denzel Washington stars as New York City subway dispatcher Walter Garber, whose ordinary day is thrown into chaos by an audacious crime: the hijacking of a subway train. John Travolta stars as Ryder, the criminal mastermind who, as leader of a highly-armed gang of four, threatens to execute the train's passengers unless a large ransom is paid within one hour. As the tension mounts beneath his feet, Garber employs his vast knowledge of the subway system in a battle to outwit Ryder and save the hostages. But there's one riddle Garber can't solve: even if the thieves get the money, how can they possibly escape?

Tony Scott and Denzel Washington together have three collaborations under their belt (Crimson Tide, Man on Fire, Deja Vu), and given that I've enjoyed every single one of their outing, there's no reason why I shouldn't with The Taking of Pelham 123, especially with John Travolta contributing as an over the top villain sporting mean tattoos, a goatee and a foul mouth. A remake of a 1974 film by the same name, this one's pretty much updated with the fusion of the Wall Street fallout and plenty of New Yorker tributes, from the mayor (James Gandolfini) to the average salaryman Waler (Washington) earning his keep.

The movie is a very typical heist action thriller from Tony Scott though it featured a very flawed hero in Denzel Washington's Walter Garber. Nothing spectacular or very action packed and I felt that the ending was a bit of an anti-climax after its slow build-up. A slight disappointment considering the amount of talent attached but at least the blu-ray soundtrack was impressive enough. For the genre, Inside Man is still better.

watched it in the plane some times back ... two good actors try hard to emote and give substance but they cannot save the reel-thin, surprise-less plot of the movie.
