Hi guys,
Tomato 1.18 is out! Get it here (http://www.polarcloud.com/tomato_118).
Also, my SpeedMod version of Tomato 1.18 is out. Check it out here (http://touristinparadise.blogspot.com/2008/04/linksys-wrt54gl-routers-improving.html).
My SpeedMod version is targeted at heavy network users (e.g. if you use a lot of P2P software).

Guys, if you are not using a WHR-G125, I suggest you use the non-ND version: 1.18 or 1.18 SpeedMod. ND versions are for WHR-G125: 1.18 ND and 1.18 ND SpeedMod.
What does SpeedMod do? Its some tweaks I did to the Linux kernel to improve the routing speed. The difference you may only notice if you use a lot of P2P, etc., the router still remains fast even with 2000-6000 connections.
BTW, for those of you who use the QoS in Tomato, there is a new undocumented "feature". By default, Tomato QoS uses SFQ qdiscs which should give 'fair queueing'. But it takes more CPU power, so I recommended to Jon to replace SFQ with simple PFIFO qdisc which is faster. It is in the Tomato 1.18 firmware already (all versions, including my SpeedMod one), but by default its not activated.
To activate the PFIFO qdisc, telnet into the router and create a new NVRAM variable called "qos_pfifo" and set the value to 1:
#nvram set qos_pfifo=1
#nvram commit
Reboot or restart QoS (go to QoS > Basic Settings page, click Save) to make it take effect.
To see if it changed anything, enter this command:
# tc -s qdisc show
Before change:
qdisc sfq 30: dev vlan1 limit 128p quantum 1518b perturb 10sec
Sent 341129295 bytes 396854 pkts (dropped 772, overlimits 0)
backlog 87p
qdisc sfq 20: dev vlan1 limit 128p quantum 1518b perturb 10sec
Sent 22744765 bytes 19407 pkts (dropped 0, overlimits 0)
qdisc sfq 10: dev vlan1 limit 128p quantum 1518b perturb 10sec
Sent 72658471 bytes 954697 pkts (dropped 0, overlimits 0)
qdisc htb 1: dev vlan1 r2q 10 default 30 direct_packets_stat 39
Sent 436565347 bytes 1371000 pkts (dropped 772, overlimits 698391)
backlog 87p
After change:
qdisc pfifo 30: dev vlan1 limit 256p
Sent 229958 bytes 323 pkts (dropped 0, overlimits 0)
qdisc pfifo 20: dev vlan1 limit 256p
Sent 63 bytes 1 pkts (dropped 0, overlimits 0)
qdisc pfifo 10: dev vlan1 limit 256p
Sent 27430 bytes 493 pkts (dropped 0, overlimits 0)
qdisc htb 1: dev vlan1 r2q 10 default 30 direct_packets_stat 66
Sent 280901 bytes 885 pkts (dropped 0, overlimits 370)
See if you notice any difference or not.

I can see that about 80 people have downloaded the Modded firmware since I put it online yesterday, and about half of them are not from Singapore (somebody linked to it from the linksysinfo site).
I would say, if you are already using Tomato 1.17/1.18, then there's pretty much no hassle for you to try the SpeedMod. The only difference u may notice is that the router can handle more connections with faster routing speed, and maybe a few hundred kilobytes more RAM usage. If you don't like it, you just need to flash back to the un-modded ones.

Nope. If you are using Tomato 1.17 or 1.18 already, no need to redo anything. But you should be able to increase Advanced > Conntrack > Maximum Connections to a higher value.
Safe value = 6000
Max recommended = 8192

Firefox 3 beta 5 doesn't work. I think it's something to do with the way scripted SVGs are handled in that version?
Works fine in IE 7 with the SVG plugin, yep. Nothing to worry. Browser error, not firmware error. Thanks to TS for all the speed upgrades!

The QOS graphs work in Firefox 3 Beta 5 for me. Maybe you have to clear your cache?
It also works in IE7 (+ Adobe SVG plugin), Opera and Safari. But on IE8 (+ Adobe SVG plugin), it throws stack overflow errors. IE8 also throws the same error with DD-WRT V24 SVG graphs, so its a browser issue.
BTW, I am the person who made the speed upgrades lah. ;)

What router do you have? Are you sure its destroyed? If your PC can still get an IP from your router, or you can telnet to your router or access your router's webpage, then it isn't dead. Just reset the configuration by holding onto the router's reset button for about 30 seconds. Do it twice.
If its really dead (cannot boot, cannot give IP, not reachable by IP), then try re-flashing it using the TFTP method:
1. Connect your PC to the router's LAN ports using a network cable.
2. Turn off the wireless on your PC, and set your PC's LAN connection to static IP: 192.168.1.10, netmask 255.255.255.0
3. Open two (DOS) command prompt windows.
4. In the first one, type "ping 192.168.1.1 -t" and press enter. It will keep pinging that address but return errors.
5. In the second one, CD to the directory where you downloaded the firmware files (better try with your router's original firmware first). Type "tftp -i 192.168.1.1 put firmwareimagefilename" where firmwareimagefilename is the correct firmware for your router. DON'T PRESS ENTER YET.
6. Unplug the power of your router, wait a few seconds, plug power back in. QUICKLY go to your PC. You should notice the first DOS window with the ping, start having ping replies. THE MOMENT you see this, press ENTER on the second DOS window with the tftp.
Note: The router should only have ping replies for the first 3 seconds or so. During this time it will accept a file by TFTP, so you have to be quick. If you miss this window, power off and on the router and try again.
7. Wait a few seconds (can be up to a minute) for the tftp to complete. If there any errors take note. If successful, continue.
8. LEAVE YOUR ROUTER ALONE for about 3 to 5 minutes. You should see the router's power light blinking blinking and it rebooting, then after a while the power light will stop blinking. If all went well, your router will be flashed with the firmware.
9. Do a double reset - hold the reset button on your router for 30 seconds. Let go. Let it power up (power light stops blinking). Hold reset button again for 30 seconds, let go again. Wait till power light stops blinking again.
10. Set your PC's LAN connection back to dynamic IP (DHCP, default settings). See if you get an IP from your router.
How to get tftp? Windows XP comes with tftp by default. Windows Vista doesnt have it by default, but you can install it from Add/Remove programs, Windows features.

Hi I am confused by the QoS settings... would appreciate some guidance.
I am on Singnet 10Mbps( 1Mb upload). There are 3 PCs and 3 laptops in the house.
PC 1 is my webserver. As such, I want it to get priority for http traffic over all others.
PC 2 is my main desktop. It is used for gaming, surfing and P2P purposes. I want P2P to use whatever traffic it need but give way to other traffic.
PC 3 is my linux testbox. Priority is low here coz its traffic is mainly OS patching.
Laptop 1 is my Macbook where traffic is mainly http and is secondary to PC 2.
Laptop 2 is family usage and thus need decent access.
Laptop 3 is for visiting friends so that they don't touch my main systems.
I also use VoIP on my mobilephone.
So far I have disabled QoS and in the classification... I made rules that http traffic to and from the websever ( PC1) is highest priority and SIP/VOIP is high. Will the router obey these rules considering I disabled QoS??? The problem is the QoS percentages are extremely confusing to me. Appreciate any tips you can give.

No offence, but I think u still have not understood the concept of the % thingies. The rules classify the packets into each class listed at the % thingies page, hence how can they not be related? If u really do not want to put in minimum or maximum bandwidth allocations for each classification, just put in 0% and 100% for all the classes. :s22:

I was thinking... if say the traffic ended up choked (ie. traffic queued)... then the router will process those in higher priority 1st.
And no offense taken as I am new to this firmware. Under WinXP, all there was 1 simple percentage. This one really alot. Problem is I don't care about traffic until it is choked. Then when it is choked, I want high priority traffic to be processed 1st. Guess it doesn't work this way. :P

If that is your concern, then yes, just put 0% as the minimum bandwidth for those classes that are lower than the higher priority classes that u intend to process the traffic as high priority. This is to ensure that the lower priority classes will not take a minimum bandwidth when the higher priority classes require bandwidth.

most defaults in Tomato is already pretty optimized for what you are doing. But QOS is not enable by default. For a start turn on QOS and see what happens.

Hi, what router are you using, which firmware were you using before, and which version of the SpeedMod firmware did you flash it with?
The Speedmod doesn't change anything on the wireless side, so it should have no effect on the wireless signal strength.
Maybe you used the ND version of Tomato on an old router, that may affect wireless signal strength.

Using P2P? Have you patched your Windows with the half-open connections limit reached (4226 event) patch? Otherwise your Windows will be limiting the speed at which u can open new connections. Common symptom is when u have BT on you cannot surf webpages coz BT is taking up all the connection attempts from the Windows limit.

still having slow down when surfing net and sometimes the web page doesn't render properly when bt is on..
one more thing
using utorrent 1.6. for the peers column... can recognize 1500+ peers but only connected 53 peers... and for the seeds column... can recognize 25 seeds but only connected to 3.... issit the a seed problem or my 1.6 settings problem?
1) Windows TCP Half-connections limit default (10) is too low. Use lvllord's patch to increase to 50 or 100.
2) uTorrent 1.6's Half-connections setting is too high. Default should be 8 (80% of Windows'). But once you have increased Windows' setting, increase uTorrent's setting proportionately too (40 or 80 respectively).
3) There is ISP throttling, which is causing some backlog on your router.
If you have remedied 1 and 2 and the problem persists, try download the Openoffice 2.4.0 torrent to check for ISP intervention. This torrent is super-well seeded and usually hits a maximum of 85% to 99% of one's bandwidth if everything is working fine.

No need. So far my tomato upgrades have always retained the settings itself.

Using P2P? Have you patched your Windows with the half-open connections limit reached (4226 event) patch? Otherwise your Windows will be limiting the speed at which u can open new connections. Common symptom is when u have BT on you cannot surf webpages coz BT is taking up all the connection attempts from the Windows limit.
yes have already patched the 4226 event to 100 and bittorrent max_halfopen to 80

Are you using the outbound QoS on Tomato? Try not to use more than 3 levels (Highest, High, Medium), and make sure to set the upload bandwidth correctly (about 60kbit/sec less than your actual upload bandwidth). I find that if you use too many levels you just make things slower.
If you dont want to use QoS, then just make sure you limit your P2P uploads so that your uploads don't kill your downloads.

After applying the Windows TCP patch, I suggest you increase uTorrent's half-open connections but not too much. Highest you should set it to is around 20 or 30, depending on how many other people in your house use it. Set it too high and you'll start losing some real peers because you tried to connect to too many at a time.

WHR-HP-G54 is my router's model,
i seem to have some difficulties in installing tomato's firmware. First i try just upgrading to tomato.trx from the speedmod, but that failed.
then i tried the method that involves switching off my router, changing my ethernet settings, using the whr_install.bat to install then switching my router back on. waited for awhile, nothing happened. only a "waiting for the router" message.
please help me out a little?

Many got stuck as the %1 in WHR_INSTALL.bat is not edited. Do it if you haven't. The details is inside Tomato's wiki.

Thats okay. You probably wont feel any difference unless you have more than 2000 connections. From my own experience in non-patched firmware, if the router starts to have 2000 or more connections then everything becomes a lot slower (web surfing, etc.).
But with the SpeedMod I have gotten up to 6000 connections before and surfing was still responsive. Rarely use so many connections though.
Anyway, I always feel better having a more updated version of the Linux kernel networking too. :)

I am using Buffalow WHR-G54S. Have been using Tomato since day 1. Just flashed to 1.18 SpeedMod not ND version
I guess its alrite. A little weaker signal is fine for me as long as it is clear (not noisy). Anyway my transmit power is set at only 32mw

It's good knowing that when the router encounters more load, it has more reserves to use up before becoming overloaded. :)

I think there was some problem with 1.18, as experienced and reported by some users in the linksysinfo forum. That might be why 1.19 appeared early.
