Received this error message when I connected my external HDD to my laptop. Tried to connect to another computer and got "Error performing inpage operation" error message. The drives still display and the error message seems to apply only to certain partitions, for example one of the partitions named "video" seems to work properly whereas the others (which appear as "local disk") don't.

Any idea on how I can solve this problem?

Thanks in advance.

Also, the other partitions appear to be completely empty.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If you're using NTFS, the situation sounds like bad partitions or bad file tables.
If you have Linux or a LiveCD, try to see if Linux can detect the partitions.

Sounds really like its either a partition or file table problem. Does windows request for a chkdsk operation to be launched?

Yes it's NTFS.

Nope, no chkdsk operation request.

So if it's a bad partition, what can I do about it? The HDD used to be in my CPU, now I put it in an external casing because I'm using a laptop. Never had any problems while I was using it for my desktop.

Those partitions that appear only as local disk and unable to access it, does it prompt you to format the volume when you clicked on it? If yes then its a partition table problem and do not format it.

Sometimes, Windows really does non-standard B$ to the drives it comes into contact with -_-
It screwed a few of my partitions before, but Linux handled them fine.

From your description, you might want to try the following. No guarantees, but worth a try.

- get a Linux LiveCD, boot in and see if the drive can be properly detected
- alternatively, if you have access to a spare external casing, try using that (this may not help, but will eliminates certain problems)

Thanks PsyNidE and radioactive28.
