Hi,

i was able to get 96Mbps via wired connection to SB6100 (MOL Ultimate)

Using wired to Dir655 and Dir655 wired connection to SB6100 : 50Mbps

Using wireless to Dir655 and with Dir655 wired connected to SB6100 : 26Mbps

using DWA-140 rangebooster N USB adaptor

Bandwidth tested with speedtest.net and had almost the same with hub ultilities. Tested during 4pm -6pm

i am using WEP. Router setting is default factory setting except for SSID and WEP. Tried disabling QOS, no different.

DIR 655 A3 version 1.11SH
DWA-140 USB adaptor version 1.30

really tried everything, can any experience guru help me out with my router setting?

For the wireless portion, DIR-655 is designed to work with WPA, WPA2 and when running in WEP mode, it takes a very high penatly to its speed. You can try switch to WPA and you will see the wireless speed improve.

On the WAN testing. 4-6pm is a very wide time range for network testing especially when this network your testing is a shared type of medium. Maybe if you can test DIR-655 first at 4pm then follow by direct connection. I believe you tested direct connection first for the test mentioned in the first post. This is to rougly make the test timing for the both test as similar as possible.

Thanks... i will try this suggestion u mention...The reason i am using WEP is becos my the other adaptor WRT54G may not be WAP compatible...well i will give it a try

I think you've mixed up the model number sinec WRT54G is a router.
If you're referring to the Linksys USB Wireless G Router, chances are it supports WPA with updated drivers.

this model will support WPA.

when operating in mix mode ie N device + G devices, the DIR-655 down speed in order to be compatible with G devices. So if you run the wireless test with a G client connected, i think 25mbps is as good as it gets.

the problem i am facing now is even using wireless N adaptor i could get more than 25mbps

No luck getting anything above 60mpbs, my guess is the router is not working as is shld be. Just sent an email to the Starhub customer affair. hopefully the can give me some guide on who to approach

Hey guy, just to share you, i email the technician over dlink side, she asked me to do the following
1. Advanced > Firewall Settings > uncheck "Enable SPI" > Click on Save Setting
2. Advanced > QoS Engine > uncheck " Enable Traffic Shaping" > Click on Save Setting
3. Advanced > Advanced Wireless > uncheck "Short GI" > Click on Save Setting

For Wireless connection, make sure that DIR-655's security mode (if any) is configured as WPA personal, Cipher type is choosen as AES.

and does help, my bandwidth speed went up from 25/26mps to 35/40. but i am not resting the case untill i get over 70mbps

I did tell you about using WEP will result in having performance penalty in my earlier post. Didn't you try?. From various tests by netcitizen, using WPA2-AES instead of WPA-AES will improve the performance for current generation Draft N devices.

Try playing around with the positioning of your DWA-140, that will also help improve overall link and throughput. The same goes for the 3 antenna of the router, the default position you see on the box might not also be the best for your given location. Test the antenna one by one to see if you can squezze more performance out of it.

BTW, some testing done by my friend who have the DWA-140 shows the device max speed with no encryption (ie WPA/WPE etc..) is around 90mbps +-, 1meter LOS with the router. so don't think 70mbps is practical in most home environment

I did try what u told me... i think whatever u guys tell me to try, is still in my configuration. The technician mention to me to disable short GI. i think that help. later when my bro is not at home, i shld change it to WPA2 and see there is any improvement... anyway the speed showing on the DWA-140 is 270mbps<---- does this play apart?

misato

Not really. It shows the negotiated speed of 270mbps, but there other factors like chipset proccessing speed, link quality etc.... all these will affect the resultant throughput.

Did you ever fix the issue? I haven't with this useless router. And now my iphone is suffering. Youtube doesn't even move on my iphone. With my old linksys compact 54gc router it was fast as hell.

Should select WPA2 or WPA? Cos the help files says WPA2 is AES.

Logically, no encryption should be faster too.

I got the Dlink 655 last week and I return it the next day. It's the A3 version and even upgraded to the latest firmware.

What problems I encountered are:

1. Wired connection speed is slow. It's very laggy when I stream from StarHub Online channel. When I stream my CCTV video through my LAN, everything died. Cannot even access router page. Power cycled the 655, connection back again. Every time I start CCTV app it dies.

2. Wireless connection also crazy. Upon connecting, 54mbps, then start dropping till 1mbps, within 5mins.

3. Whatever technology I enable or disable on the 655 did not solve the problem.

It comes clear to me that the "switching throughput" was lower than my WRT54G v3.1.
I'm not here to discriminate any brand or routers. But through my years configuring wireless routers since there was such devices, I'm very sad with the quality wireless routers nowadays.

Wireless routers nowadays save cost by reducing the RAM size. That's why we get connections dropping more often. As we head into Wireless-N and Gigabit and Blazing internet speed, we actually require more RAM to handle such high volume of traffic. It's like no point getting a quad-core system with only 512MB RAM. It will struggle to death handling terabytes of data nowadays. Also routers manufacturers do not specify the hardware of the router unless you google on it, things like chipset, ram, wireless module.

I ended up with a TP-Link TN-WR841ND. I'm not promoting any router here. This router has a good Wired throughput, even better than WRT54G v3.1 but not on the Wireless. Another issue is also the support for Starhub Online channels. It does not support MultiCast, so not able to view the on-line channels. I've email their support, but yet to get a positive respond from them.

So at this moment, I'm still waiting for a decent wireless router with a good throughput on both wire and wireless and also support Multicast. :(

I read so many good reviews about the DIR-655. Went to get it, go home fix it up and everything just so slow. I did not want to be stuck with a $199 problematic router so got the TP-Link to tahan for the moment. Sad :(

Good review, because they give money to do the marketing.
if you have done the test, TP-LINK TL-WR841ND is better than 655. I do the comparation with my friend. Even TP-LINK have QOS and Bridge function. that is great!!
