I got a 20GB EEE PC running on Linus OS
Jus installed WIN XP OS everything is ok. After installing the WINDOWS, NORTON 360 and while trying to install INTERNET EXPLORER 7 + JAVA but my built-in 4GB space is full.
I can't locate my the other 16GB drive. Check under properties i can see it's there but go into "My Computer" the 16GB drive jus isn't there. It's really driving me crazy. I'm not very familiar with IT stuff but simple step i still can follow got some friends who knows a little bit here and there to help up my installation but jus cldn't figure out this probem.
Where can i locate my 16GB drive? How can i save my other program in it? I still have program like Microsoft office and Adobe creator to be installed.
Hope someone can guide me thru. Thanks

Not too sure if this works, but right click on your My Computer, and go under Manage. Go to disk management and you should be able to see the extra 16GB. I think you will have to right click on the drive and initialize it, follow by a quick format to get Windows to recognize your other drive. :)

Anyway, my advise is not to install Norton into your EeePC as it tends to slow down your rig quite a fair bit. Considering that your EeePC isn't powerful in the first place, it might make things worst. Try some lighter anti virus apps like the free AVG.

hmmm is it possible for us to change the 16GB to C drive?

I do not have the eeePC but I believe that if you can access the BIOS, you can set the boot order to boot from the 16gb.
The 4gb is built in memory and it is supposedly faster than the 16gb Flash Card.

You need to install XP onto the 16GB SSD, cos under Computer Management you can't change the drive letter of the system drive - it's always C:. So while you can change the drive letter of the 16GB, your 4GB will always be C:.

I think its possible. But I won't recommend that cause the 16GB is no doubt larger than the 4GB, but then again, its also slower. I rather my OS boot up and respond faster. ;)

It def will be. But its up to personal preference. Maybe you can give AVG a shot to see if its any better. If not, then you can always install your Norton back right? :) Anyway, I am not too sure how the licensing works, so do make sure that you can reinstall Norton back before removing it pal.

did you nlite your XP installation?
a tightly nlited XP would weigh in around 540-570MB, with essential security patches installed.
that should leave plenty of space for Office and Creator.
google for nlite asus and you should find at least a couple of different approaches.

Yes can but not recommended. I've done it before, follow either of the links here:

Copy the installers to the 16GB SSD and run the setup from there. Then install to the 16GB SSD. There should be no problem.

but why would it perform slower? :s11:
Possibly because of the interface. Mini-PCIe seems to be slower than soldered on.

Check this out pal,
http://sg.vr-zone.com/articles/Asus_Eee_PC_900_Review_and_Dissection/5726-7.html
If you look at the average read speed of the 2 storages on the Eee PC, the 4GB that is soldered on the mobo is higher, which should translate to a more responsive system. From what I see, its almost 30% faster in terms of read speed. :)

If you are going to use internet banking, then you will have to install JAVA, regardless of what web browser you are going to use. My fav is Firefox tho. I don't think you can nlite MS Office, but I think you can choose what you wanna install by selecting the custom installation. That should save you some space. :)

Learn how to install XP using a single thumbdrive. It's also faster than the normal method.

Yep, the 20GB Eee PC 900 can be installed with XP and Photoshop CS2, but I don't know about the performance of PS on the Eee PC.
External HDDs can connect with no problems.

For an IT idiot like me i spent almost 1 full day to install the XP and all the softwares i need. Reading closely to all the instructions again and again i did 3 attempts to install my OS.
First attempt, i did a Full XP OS installation + Office XP & Norton 360 which took up all the space in my built-in 4GB.
Second attempt, i did an Nlite XP OS installation. While installing programs there's some hipcup here and there. Installing & removing...... can't really decided what program i really need and which partitions to put them in
Third attempt, i became more decisive.

With the guide from both the above websites.
1) I did a cross check on both sites to see what each of them have deleted to create my Nlite XP.
2) Burn the complete Nlite XP onto a disc as "DISC IMAGE" not data (I took 10 mins to figure this out after a few attempts of failure when my eee doesn't boot the disc)
3) Finally got my Nlite XP + Driver installed in the bulit-in Drive C (Took up almost 2GD of space at this stage)
4) Did a partition & quick format for the 16GB in Drive D (For guide go to #2 reply by watzup_ken)
5) Following the steps closely in http://www.i64x.com/eeexp.php. Until i finish all the steps under the heading "Running Windows Update"
6) I installed the following Programs in Drive C
a) Java (A must for internet banking)
b) Office 2007 Enterprise (Word,Excel,Outlook,Powerpoint only)
7) And I installed the following Programs in Drive D
a) Mozilla FireFox (Took up much much lesser space compare to Explorer 7)
b) Pidgin (Very basic All-In-One messenger chat for my MSN & Yahoo. It took up much lesser space too compare to installing both MSN & Yahoo Messenger)
c) LG DVD writer Disc (Program like Nero Express. I install almost everything in e disc that came with the dvd writer)
d) Nokia PC Suite 6 (To back-up & synchronise my phone)
8) Finally back to http://www.i64x.com/eeexp.php. Following the steps under the heading
"Cleaning Up After Windows Update" I made this my last step (Not very sure whether it makes any different to do it before or after i've installed all the programs i need)
My Drive C took-up 2.26GB & Drive D took up 741MB.

Nice job. Most people get really troubled during the nLite process, but it's actually really simple. Just read the short descriptions, and remove those that look useless :).

Just make sure you install it along with your XP installation. There should be no problems, it isn't exactly very CPU-intensive, right?

Hi angrynutz, from what I saw what you are trying to install into your 3e PC, you should have purchased a proper laptop instead of this. The Asus 3E is designed for people who wants mobility and do not expect to do heavy processing. So there seems to be a mismatch between your needs and the equipment you purchase.
My advise is to revert back to the Linux operating system and use those features provided. It will not upset the equipment and certainly will not add frustrations to your life :)
Nevertheless, you experiences have sparked off a bit of researches and information here that members have provided and they are useful for knowledge purposes.
Now can sell it off cheap cheap? :p Just kidding.

Any idea can "Junction Link Magic" done on the 900?
Saw the post below in eeeuser.com
"Great guide, with suitable adjustments I have XP Home on my 901 running fine with UK keyboard etc.
One additional thing, I used NTFS reparse point facility so that c:\program files is transparently linked to d:\program files (used Junction Link Magic). Now I can install all the apps in what appears as default directory but the space is used on d:
Added Vistamizer to get rid of the hideous XP Luna theme."

For me, the installation was done via an interrnal cd-rom that became "external" with a use of usb-to-ide convertor, bought abt 28 bucks @ SLS.
Of course, thumbdrive would be cheaper as think most of use would have a spare thumbdrive laying ard, but I too lazy to read the instructions.
But XP is a full installation onto the 4G, left above 600meg now, have turned off restoration point.
Meaning my 4G is only for OS, more or less will be enough for some time haha.
16G is for my programes like the free AVG (really take less resources then Norton), Office XP, emulators for old game systems and some supporting third party software.
Added a 4G SD for my music and back up usage.
