Been thinking of one since i saw my friends PS3 playing Call of Duty 4 online hooked up to one.

Anyone with any reviews of any models or deals to be had?

Looking at Benq myself. Any thoughts?

Thanks guys

Projectors normally do not have a big price cut during the IT show. More so these few shows where all the brands are held by one company, Challenger. The show at the beginning of the year at expo didn't even have projectors on show.

Still the minimum promotion is the usual free screen/tv tuner/bulb (for ex models). However most of the time, you can get a better price if you get them online or bargaining in sim lim.

As for me i'm also getting a projector this time, but still deciding between a HD ready projector - Mitsubishi HC1500 (1280 X 800) or just a normal XGA projector like the viewsonice PJ358 and Infocus IN2104. All 3 are around the same price with 100+- difference. I am hooking it up most oftenly to my PC to watch my movie clips and gaming so leaning towards the 2 XGA projector. But somehow the HC1500 is a steal with that price and specs. Anyone can give me some advice?

How much is the Mitsubishi going for these days? Any freebies? Looking at the Benq w500 and Panasonic AX200 series myself.

Which online site would u recommend? Thanks man

^ amazon would do nicely

The panasonic AX200 ain't bad but it costs slightly more than the HC1500 while i would skip BenQ personally.

HC1500 is going for USD800+, and remember to factor in GST you need to pay to ship it over.

Anyone noe roughly how much will a 1080p projector cost? Is it expensive to maintain a projector? Will the bulb spoilt every few months?

how about replacement bulbs? any idea which will be cheaper?

Shipping thru amazon is alright? is the projector itself prone to breakage thru shipping?

range from 4K onwards. bulb life on average is 2K-3K hours, doesn't mean it will definetely break after that but the illuminance won't be as bright. No other maintenance necessary other than powering it down the correct way and try to prevent using it in dusty place.

how about replacement bulbs? any idea which will be cheaper?

Shipping thru amazon is alright? is the projector itself prone to breakage thru shipping?

Replacement bulbs is around the same, get it locally for easy 7 days guarantee.

If broken during shipping then it is amazon's fault mah, any most likely won't because the projector is backed in hard styrafoam in the box.

What is your main source for this projector? PC or vid player?

For bluray or hdvd player, get a HD ready projector that can handle 720P or at least 480P resolution. HC1500 belongs to this group, however as i read about it, seems like the shortest distance you have to cater for it is 2.6M from the area you are projecting it on. Not good for people with limited space. Other than that, reviews looks good for such a cheap 720P projector.

Best place to get is amazon as it is not sold locally.

For connecting mainly to PC, it would be more versatile to use a 1024 X 768 XGA projector. Below 1.5K you can get viewsonic PJ358 or Infiocus IN2014.

actually i just visited panasonic booth yest to take a look at their AX200U 720P projector. must say that the pic quality is really awesome and it looks just as nice showing PC background. The zoom at 2X, lens shift and vert + horiz keystone are great features on it. the main drawback is of course the price at 2.5K but i'm sure it can go below 2K with good bargaining skills. Also it is quite huge and take quite a bit of space as it is an LCD projector.

disappointed that infocus and viewsonic were not there this year. benq's W500 was disappointing as well, fonts were not clear when played thru a PC and colours were a bit fake. though features on it is as good as the panasonic as it has vert and hori keystone + lens shift for awkward projector positioning. It is relatively smaller as well compared to panasonic.

Where did you get the info that Infocus is a Data projector only?

BenQ makes more data projectors and their sideline is HT. Infocus, along with Panasonic and many other brands cater to the HT enthusiast with a vast range of projectors.

Mitshubishi, JVC and Marantz also make PJs, but they do not have a budget range. The price starts at 5k and up for a full HD version.

mm bro why so defensive? just my own opinions mah and i mention it in singapore context after looking at what the projector forum people owns. that is why i don't mentione JVC and Marantz, how many people out of the whole projector community can afford them? As for mitsubishi, i have been supporting their HC1500 series and recommending it to everyone if you check some of my posts. And for your info it is very budget at 1000+ a little only.

For data projectors, i like what i see from infocus IN series and those sharp portables. they are cheap and present good value with their crisp words.

For movie projectors, i like Sony colours very much as it is vibrant. Panasonic because of their picture quality and BenQ for their value. Where else can you find a HD ready projector with lens shift, horizontal and vertical keystone etc for 1.5K?

It is not a defensive point, but my aim is to ensure that whoever reads this knows the facts.

Plus the fact that I do not own the said Infocus.... I don't think I am the one who is defensive

And the fact is InFocus makes some of the finest HT PJs, price not withstanding.

Cheers

I only wanted the projector as i will be moving back to indonesia soon and will have problems bringing back the screen. The screen they are giving is a widescreen type (45" X 80") by DA-LITE, one of the better brands for projector screens. The one they are giving is supposed to worth $400+ according to the guy but i reckon at most $200 as it was a normal material and not glass embedded or the fancy ones.

The retailer is HAWKO.

looks like overscan to me. if the normal menu does not have the option to turn off overscan try to google for info to get to advance menu. on a pc u can use custom resolution to correct that but if u can fix it on the projector it would be a better method.

May be you want to consider a 42" LCD TV or Plasma. It came as an advise for a service engineer of an established projector brand. The reason he give was, the cost of the projector bulb is very expensive and the bulb life span is less then LCD TV. However, if you want have very large screen then projector is your only choice.
Hope this helps.

typically a projector bulb costs about s$500 and lasts at least 3000 hours. if care is taken the bulb lasts longer. so that works out to be only about $0.17 an hour. cheaper than going to the cinemas.

a huge 100" screen setup can be had for as cheap as s$1500. how much is a plasma/lcd tv for that size :D

Are you getting it from Singapore or overseas?

In Singapore, Optoma HD65 is selling at S$1499. Quite an impressive 720p projector it seems.

Via the internet, you can get Mits 1500, Planar 7060 or Sharp 510, all highly reviewed and less than US$1000.

Actually this will be my first projector purchase... if I was to buy.

My uses for it is to furnish my living room with this for the occasional TV and DVD viewing, at maybe 80" diagonal of 16:9, and viewing 3m frm the screen....

As I am not really a hardcore HomeTheatre person, so dun think I will even be spending much on the sound system either... ...

Is there anything else suitable at a more affordable budget?

Committed to an AX200E. Gd price from Hawko. ")

Have used it for a couple of weekends, with friends and family, happy with the perfomance (resolution, auto-iris), and the lens shift was a great help. Plus short-throw allowed 80" projection wtih 2.5~3m viewing dist, sweet :)") ")

Now gonna consider a projector stand(so tht no need to strain the lens shift too much...), and maybe a cheapo DVD player that can give me some upscaling frm Standard DVD to HD-ready...

Woah, the days of DLP RPTVs are long off the shelves in Singapore.
I think you might want to do some cold-calling to all the major brands offices in SG to see if there's any old stocks or sets still in store somewhere.

They're great value, if you ignore the bulk of the TVs.

Hi Everyone,

I have had recently bought an Epson projector and Acer laptop. I had both connected together and can watch DVDs movies and pictures shown on the wall thru the projector. Same time I can also see these on the laptop as well.

However, when I tried playing blue ray discs, I can only see on the laptop but nothing can be seen on the wall projected by my projector.

I want to watch my blue ray discs on the wall and can anyone guide me or tell me what or where went wrong.

Please help and thanks.

Your Epson Projector is not powerful enough to support the resolution played by your blue ray setting. IMO, most probably, you will not be able to do any projection using blue ray. Maybe you can try to lower your laptop resolution(1024 by 768), and see if it works for you.

Tips on buying a projector

http://digital.asiaone.com/a1media/site/common/blank.gifThe brighter, the better
Measured in Ansi lumens, the brightness level gives you an idea of a projector's power.
As a rough guide, you need a projector with a lumens level that is in the thousands for an auditorium. A model with around 200 lumens is good enough for a classroom or small conference room.
Go light
If you are always on the move, get something light and portable.
Last year, projector makers like Optoma and 3M introduced a new category of image casters called pico projectors.
At under 200g, these mini projectors fit in the palm of your hand or in your pocket.
The trade-off is that they have lower lumens levels and do not project as much image detail as their full-sized counterparts.
Know the tech
There are three main projection technologies to date.
Liquid crystal display (LCD), digital light processing (DLP) and liquid crystal on silicon (LCOS).
The science behind projection involves the creation of tiny pixels of light and combining them to create an image.
In LCD projectors, light passes through layers of charged crystals to form an image.
In DLP, a tiny panel containing millions of tiny mirrors is used instead. Each mirror forms a pixel of an image and by moving rapidly when light hits it, it turns the pixel on or off. A colour filter then adds colour to the image.
LCOS combines both LCD and DLP intelligence for high-resolution images with true-to-life colours.
Shorter throw ratio
This refers to how near you can place a projector to the screen and still have a large image.
A good projector can be placed, say, 1m from the screen (or wall) and still project a clear image.
So, at the same distance from the screen, a projector with a shorter throw ratio will give you a larger screen size compared to one with a longer throw ratio.
Higher contrast ratio
A projector with a higher contrast ratio can display deeper blacks and purer whites.
This is an important consideration for video playback as it affects the way colours show up on screen.
Check connection ports
You would want your projector to work with a variety of devices.
All projectors should have at least a VGA port that allows you to connect it to a laptop.
If you want to hook it up to a DVD player, ensure that there is at least a connection for S-Video, composite video or component video.
Pricier models may also offer high-definition multimedia interface (HDMI) slots for devices such as a Blu-ray player.
Check for plug-and-play ease
Higher-end models come with intuitive smarts like DisplayLink, which allows easy plug-and-play via a USB cable.
Advanced models may include functions such as LitePort PC-free presenter. This allows users to project content directly from a USB flash drive.
