Hi there!
So far anyone has faced problems with their E71? Care to share? I'm already set on getting one already - so just wanna know better what I am getting myself into. Hehehe..
Whilst I hear and read all the good comments, let's also tackle the other side and see if there are any workarounds which anyone might know of or would like to share!
Cheers,

Cheers,
Currently my set have a problem after 2 days of using so far. When I press the menu button, it was suppose to show the menu layout but instead, the main screen never budge... I need to switch it off and on again and the problem goes away.... after a few hours, the same thing happens again, I was not able to go into the menu screen.....
Been bugging me these few days, will go to Nokia soon for this.... Arghhhhhh......
Bought at MSq.... after 3 days, went back to them, they master reset it.... then it's back to square one... called them, was advised to go to nokia.... seems like software bug....
Anyone has this problem??? Thought within a week got problem, they replace one to one.....

If i not mistaken, now no more 1-for-1 from the mobile service providers. You have to go back to the manufacturer to get a replacement. So far this is true for my SE and today, my Nokia E71!! keke...

Hmm, so far my minor gripes with the phone are that the reception is not very good at times (i.e. normal voice calls with voip "packet drops" kinda quality) second is after installing a few applications, it appears that my memory card got a little screwy as I can't open smses that are on my mem card anymore (I can listen to them though lol), changed it to store smses in my phone memory but I basically lost my smses that were in the mem card before I switched. I also tried to use it to download emails automatically using wilan but it appears not to work for some reason...
Other than that, I'm loving it. Used it for an entire day, battery guage dropped only a bar.

it's a beautiful phone but I am inclined to say wait a bit. You can read my issues on the official E71 thread here. New products have issues sometimes, but Customer service should make those as painless as possible. Not the case...so far.

i dun use the leather pouch or strap given...i use moshi. Heard that is prone to scratches on phone

seems like the problems on E 71 is quite adhoc and unpredictable.
maybe only certain batches are affected.

I just saw that some users are having flimsy keypad.... some had a frequently hanged set... whereas some are completely ok and fine.
Im not sure, am i right to say that?

yea, actually u'r right,
all boils down to luck.. maybe most of the users will face the same bugs, which could be a software bug and an update of new firmware will eventually solve the problem.

i guess that's gonna true for every other manufacturer as well. No one can promise zero defect product, can they? It's a matter of whether u can live with it or not.

After 1 week of usage, got one time my e71 got distorted key tone for awhile. After reset then ok. So far so good with my set.

Happy with E71 so far.... except:
1. one bright pixel during bootup. Didn't notice it till recently when I switch it on in a dark room.
-> Try yours and see if it's common for E71... haben compare notes yet
2. Reception is not so good. Drop call and sometime difficult to engage network... quite similar to my previous Dopod. Guess the radio software is trying to conserve energy to squeeze better battery performance
3. as usual the camera is not so good... even compared to my previous Dopod 2M pixel
4. E-mail download seems to have intermittent problem.. though I call M1 to complain about their data network... but it seems more like the phone issue than network
Less the above, it's perfect phone with easy to use QWERTY (as compared to Samsung i780 which I have once considered.)

Which spot did ur bright pixel appear on? How did u spot it?

Which spot did ur bright pixel appear on? How did u spot it?
bright spot near the bottom left corner (between the left key and the center navi key). Very very tiny...
1. switch off the phone
2. go to a dark room or not so bright room
3. look hard on the screen
4. switch on the phone
If the screen is defective, you should see a very bright spot as compare to the entire screen.
I need to go Nokia Care shop this weekend to send 2 Nokia phones into "hospital"
- 6500s (5 mths old) => camera not working
- E71 (2 weeks old) => bright spot
Guess Nokia has a lot of quality issue recently. No wonder Nokia Care shop is always full of people to get their phone service. (probably also due to their large market share and hence relatively more problems.)

If any of the problems happened, no matter where you buy. you have to bring it to Nokia for rectification right.. ahhh thats troublesome, the queue at NCC is crazy!!!

Eg. When we go to the contact list right, I press and hold on the D-pad and the key tone will run continously and it will sound 'cracking' at some point from the speaker... Reset the hp will ok but the problem will come back... Dunno is it my speaker spoil, can bro can test their set before i send into Nokia Centre which i'm trying to avoid...

Two software bug
- if you launch your MSN and continue to use it for a while, somehow your phone will not be able to receive incoming calls. It will be diverted to voice mail. Worst still, no incoming SMS. Quite bad.... so, suggestion is to switch off and on after using MSN.
- the phone starts to complain out of memory, pls close applications. And guess wat? No application is open which you can check by pressing and holding HOME key. This problem comes intermittently and not too sure the exact cause. Still trying to figure out

My set is about 2 weeks old.
Guess you use WIFI instead of GPRS/3G/3.5G data service which explains why u dun encounter the problem. The software I have should be the same as yours...
It's unlikely to be hardware problem.
I will consolidate all of my problem and go NCC this weekend or next week. This includes a tiny bright spot on LCD during power-on. Must get them to change the LCD panel, otherwise ........
The last time I went there to change the navigation key for my 6500s (center button with silver chrome on it) due to peeling, they claim to be non-manufacturer defects. I ..... with them, they finally agree to my request to change without charges. So, sometime, civilise approach is not well received.

I have noticed that my media library is corrupt after connecting the phone in "Mass Storage" mode using USB cable.
Happened quite a few times, and had to power off then power on the phone. Phone then rebuilds the library and its okay after then.
Anyone noticed this problem?

Found another pb... when using bluetooth hands-free, somehow the phone reset the volume of my BT to the lowest volume each time it connects for phone-call, Map navigation,...or whatsoever.
Usual suspect is compatibility issue between BT and E71 or could be just E71 software pb. Think I can ask Nokia to "compensate" me a BT that is compatible with E71. Got to read thoroughly their warranty policy before going down to NCC this weekend to complain on my list of pb stated in my previous post and this new found pb.
Got to know my rights as a consumer first. (Looks like NCC is going to have tough time with me.)

Hmm.. encountered something odd with my E71.
Fully charged it yesterday evening at atound 6.30pm. This morning and checked it at 7.30am to find it down to the last bar!
Only had one missed call last night at 8.30pm. And all connectivity options were turned off.
Now recharging it without the phone on to monitor the progress. Weird.

If it happens again, I would suggest going to NSC to exchange the battery as you might have a faulty battery that cannot hold it's charge.

I confirm my E71 has reception issue. While driving along PIE, drop calls twice. One at Jalan Toa Payoh flyover, the other is near Adam road exit. Think it is due to switching over fro 3G to 2G. I'm using M1. The handover of network is not properly managed by either phone or network. More likely the phone since other phones model (like my previous 838pro) has no such issue. 3GPP standard has a wide definition and some manufacturers adopt the standards based on their own interpretation.
Anyway, still happy with E71.
Battery charging is okay.... quite fast charging. I paid my utility bill faithfully :) despite recent SP Service bill issue recently.
(just kidding...)
Anyway, no time to go NCC... will try to make a trip this weekend to lodge my list of complaints...including my bluetooth pb... no matter what profile I choose, it will connect BT calls at low volume which I must turn up the volume quickly to talk. (Again, it's a software problem probably due to compatibility, highly suspect.)

i seem to be having problems with the camera on the E71...
the camera takes about 6-10 seconds to capture an image in darker conditions (e.g. indoors), in which it often turns out dark and blurred. it feels quite dumb to hold the phone still for the entire duration it takes to capture and save the image. is this supposed to be normal for this phone? cos if it's not normal i'm probably gonna bring it down to the care center soon :(

Blink fast or blink once every 8 secs? If it's the later, it's not notification light, it's the "breathing light" feature.

Mine takes around 2hrs plus to fully charge. But if u keep using when it's charging it'll probably take a much longer time. I feel that the battery's excellent though. Can lasts mi 3 days for my usage.

The top of my E71 Navi Scroll key (the silver square below the screen) touches the LCD - so it creates 'scratching' sound when pressed.
In fact, the whole keypad (especially top and center) seems to 'float' (or curve slightly upwards) - not sure this is by design!

no navi issue, yes by design the center buttons (number pads) floats abit... especially if u press frm an angle u can see. Bare in mind this is a whole keypad, not individual keys stick on to the phone. :)

The thing I dun like abt that Conversations app from "Nokia Beta", is that it creates a new component to ur "Contacts" app, as opposed to streamlining the added function to ur Messenging app.

I just tried; it appears u must still manually reject the call after sending out that sms.
Maybe the intent is just to shorten a single step of invoking the "Create new sms" function when a call's coming in???:s11:

The manual describe this function as:
To send a text message automatically to the person who is calling you informing why you cannot answer the incoming call.
My interpretation is an sms will be automatically sent to the caller whenever you reject his/her call. Or am i wrong? :o

ysk11 is correct. you have to reject the call, and a sms will be sent.
otherwise how will the phone determine which calls to reject? unless u install programs like blacklist, which allows u to set up a list of calls to reject and to send the smses.

the call comes in, u press the right softkey which states send sms

after that u still gotta reject the call yourself. the phone just removes the steps of filling in the phone number and the msg for u.

Happened quite a few times, and had to power off then power on the phone. Phone then rebuilds the library and its okay after then.

Yes, I had this message about media library being corrupt and the auto rebuild. I did not venture any further to diagnose.
Note: I did not update the library after transferring music files over using Nokia PC Suite - and when I saw the message I *thought the phone must have detected that and did the update automatically.

Had a problem with my wife's E71. Her phone had no vibration when it rings even though it has been set to ON. Even in silent mode it didnt vibrate too. It was ok for the past 2 weeks until yesterday. Turn OFF and ON the phone and its working again...weird..my E71 didnt have this problem though and it was bought abt the same time as hers..anyone experience this before??
Ya have the same problem. This happens if you go to "Profiles" then turn off the Vibration there. If you go back and turn it on again, the vibration doesn't come on anymore until you reboot the phone.

What happened to my phone yesterday was:
1) The phone lock (not keypad lock) was suddenly activated, which I never fiddle with this setting before.
2) Upon entering 12345 and entering the new password twice , as though I have activated this function for the first time, my tomorrow's meeting schedule appeared @ the main screen! I was very shocked because I am sure I have always synchronised my phone to my outlook contacts only. Even if I have accidentally sync with my outlook's calendar, but that was weeks back when I last sync. Why isit appearing only now?!?
After conducting some "investigation". i then realised my Mail Exchange had actually sync with my company's server! I have tried means n ways of connecting to my company's server within the first few days of this phone purchase, but to no avail. I really cannot figure out why it just suddenly connect? Same goes for the phone lock. :s27:

Currently my set have a problem after 2 days of using so far. When I press the menu button, it was suppose to show the menu layout but instead, the main screen never budge... I need to switch it off and on again and the problem goes away.... after a few hours, the same thing happens again, I was not able to go into the menu screen.....
:(:s11:
I am experiencing a similar problem with the camera shortcut button on the right side. After some time, when the camera button is pressed once, it will try to start the camera. But after showing the focus point and a black picture, the phone will return to the main screen. However, if I press the camera button twice in quick succession, the camera will load as usual.
After shutting down the phone, the camera button will behave as usual, only for the same problem to return after a while.
Has anyone experienced something similar?

Yes I did click in the 'safely remove hardware' thing. After disconnecting, I waited for a while, but nothing. Tried changing the profiles also, but no difference.
Anyway how do you guys disconnect the E71 from the PC?
And it seems wierd that E71 has this problem. IMHO the system is not smooth and ironed-out yet. For instance, my 6120 Classic doesn't have this problem when disconnecting - I would've just pulled out the USB cable without 'safely removing', and it would still be okay.
Furthermore, the even while both of them use the same S60 platform, certain characteristics that should remain the same - like during SMS, whether the 2nd letter after a fullstop will be capitalized or not - is annoyingly different. Fyi, on the 6120C and N80, it is capitalized. On the E71 it isn't.
This phone is a bit 'messy' to me compared to the other S60s.

It will, just that it's normally at a MUCH later time...u can see the time that it'll resend when u enter the list view in your outbox, assuming u have sms-es piled up there.
Yes there are times when it will auto-resend. That is how it should be.
But there are also times when it will show something like 'message sending failed', and the SMS will be in the outbox. And there will be no auto-resend.
Any idea when's the next firmware coming up?

1 thing I dun like is it doesn't allow u to rename the name of the email a/c, i.e. the name is stuck to the 1st prefix of ur email address.

TotalPetrol and mConnection, downloaded them off freeware from symbian.
TotalPetrol - unsigned
mConnection - open signed
Done a bit of "research" on signing unsigned application with some tools + symbiansigned.com. Is this the only way to go about installing unsigned applications?

yes...must sign in order to install. symbiansigned should be able to sign directly for apps with open uid, no need for other apps.
or you prefer to hack your phone, which i will not go into here.

How long does your battery last per charge? Here I am referring to light usage, as in 4 to 5 calls not lasting more than 2 mins, dont use GPRS or other apps. I have cclock running( with power saving set up) and one touch keylock apps . There is no running program in the background, no wifi usage.
I have monitored my battery for awhile. Found out recently that after charging to full, the battery drops to about 50% after 1.5 days with above usage pattern! Is there something wrong with my battery? I thought with the above usage , battery should last at least 5 days before needs recharging.

Wow....that's 1.5hrs of GPS navigation...and still can 2 days, not bad liao.
Reviews say maximum 5hrs of GPS before full battery died. That means you basically used up half the battery liao with just GPS and video/picture taking.
You wanna test battery life, try setting to GSM mode. That will make it last even longer.

Wifi wise, only used HOME wifi or Wireless SG.
Most of the time, I used BBOM..
To connect to wireless SG without having to login with username and password everytime,
try using the software called Pfingo Connect. This Pfingo connect will auto login for you once u launch the application. You just have to setup once and good to go.

Overseas!! No way I would use BBOM.. Mostly when overseas in China or Maylaysia, the Hotels and shopping malls had wifi and I just use it to called home for FREE!! Cos no matter which part of the world you are in, as long as u use Pfingo to call SG landed or mobile number, it's FREE.. Tried many many times and connections are stable and acceptable.. That why I paid for Pfingo annual subscription.

And the battery need to season too on top on how u takecare of the phone battery as in dont keep on charge it when it not empty
My case if i rarely make call or sms i leave my e71 on standby daily it can last me max for near 1week same as my old e61i
Also depend on your telco reception too and if u r on 3g or gsm purely
If u dont use bbom and dont need 3G set it to gsm only so u save battery same thoery on e66

yes in the end i can send it, but that actually (to me at least) proves that the problem lies in the phone and not the network. simply because this problem happens in all areas. the msg will be stuck first, then sent out in the next try in the next min, all at the same spot. but this problem has happened in jurong, town area, bedok, amk etc etc
wats more, i used many other phones b4 this with the same line and it has nv happened before.

Hi, let's try to troubleshoot ur sms-sending issue. Do you have a habit of hitting the "reject" key to exit to standby scrn IMMEDIATELY after pressing the "send" command?
Try waiting slightly, i.e. until u actually see the "sending message... ..." prompt, before hitting the reject key to exit to main scrn, to see if the msg still gets sent.

Then guess it isn't this then; cos previously I have sms stuck in my drafts, until I realise if I hit reject key instantly after executing send cmd, it actually saves the sms in draft folder instead of sending it. Sorry couldn't help much here.

Do you have another memory card? Try it and see whether the fault is with the memory card. Sounds like a case of data corruption to me. Or if you don't mind, format the memory card and then put just the songs in to see whether it works.. But you can back up all the contents in the memory card into your PC if you need them to be safe..

Actually, I've been living with an sms-ing bug for a long time; just wish to confirm whether it happens to the rest of you E71 owners:
When sending a new sms, if I press the "Reject call" key(the one with the red phone logo) instantly/immediately AFTER pressing "Send", the sms will actually goto my "Drafts" folder instead of being sent out.
Whereas, if I wait slightly longer to press the "Reject call" button after pressing "Send" for my sms, I will get the familiar "sms-sending" icon on my Home screen which indicates that the sms is actually being sent out, and it really gets sent.
http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff186/ralliart122002/sms_send.jpg
This is the icon to indicate the sms actually getting sent. If I press Reject call button immediately after a send command, this wouldn't happen.
I'm not too sure whether it is a flaw, or it is being designed that way, so that we can still terminate the send if we're quick enough.
Btw, if case you are wondering, I always press the reject call button to exit to main screen after sending a sms.
So fellow E71 owners, do you experience this on your phone as well?

Hi
I wouldn't say it's a flaw coz that happens to every Nokia phone I used. It's like dialing a number, you do not hear the dialing tone immediately but take about a couple of seconds before the telco can hook you up. At the meantime, you can still terminate the call. Likewise, pressing the send for SMS will also take a while for the phone to hook up to the telco network and to the SMS server. I treat it as a feature in case I accidentally press the send button before i finish my SMS, i will immediately hit the reject button so that i can still go to the draft folder and continue where i left off.

Exactly: I was also hesitant to term it a flaw(read my post carefully), but does it happen to your E71 too? I recalled the older Series40 nokia phones, press Send = Send, even if you immediately press Reject Call btn, the sms will be already on its way in the bkgd.

it will be based on when the phone is being built. If u have the receipt to proof but no warranty card i bet its still possible.
anyway i suggest tat dun sent in if u dun haf any big problems. usually it will take days & weeks.

My phone just hang at home screen after I boot it. Maybe they can reflash firmware for it which I think just takes a few hours... I would tell them I need the phone by evening :s27:

If u take there during lunch time you will be able to get back in 2 - 4hrs time depend on the amt of phone waiting to be service.
Without the warranty card or receipt of purchase with you, Nokia will use the the date of manufacture instead.

I treat it as a feature in case I accidentally press the send button before i finish my SMS, i will immediately hit the reject button so that i can still go to the draft folder and continue where i left off.
doesnt happen to my n95 8gb. the moment i press send, and the red button, still can send..

Yah, I suspect only the newer S60 Feature Pack 1 phones got this so-called feature.

N95 and E71 is indeed running on Symbian OS 9.2 Series 60 3rd edition Feature Pack 1 user interface.
IMHO, I think that different might be due to the E-series and N-series have different software programmer team(or something like that) in charge of the customizing the phone OS to suit the series.
As E71 is target for a business user, so I think that able to cancel a SMS while sending is crucial as you do not want to send the wrong info to a customer or business partner.

hey...just stating a fact. no need so defensive.
as to why the sms like that, maybe u ask nokia lor. it's not a big problem anyway. I actually prefer the choice of being able to cancel the sms sending.

I AM questioning him, because the sentence, "both N95 and E71 are FP1 phones." was made by him.

"Y lidat? Pls explain", erm..am I wrong to give the impression that I say "please" before requesting someone to explain their viewpoint?
...if u not happy wif kennyboy reply...
Since when in my post did I express unhappiness INSTEAD of query with kennyboy's replies?

no need argue....the fact is that both phones are based on the FP1 platform. Why that site is like that is beyond my powers. I don't make the phones. I just try to provide the correct information. If you don't believe, what can I say?
a simple google for N95 will tell you that it is based on FP1. End of story.

Personally I see no difference between both replies, both equally harmless, except one is more singlish. :D
Just a matter of intepretation of the words. Relax....

Go to Tools>Application Manager>Options>Settings.
Software Installation should be “All” and Online Certificate Check should be “Off”.
You may also want to temporarily set the date on the phone back to 07/20/07. Then when the installation is completed you can reset the date appropriately.

Ok just realised that the photos I have taken with the E71, when there is no sunlight or usually in the night have a yellow bar at the top, anyone else have it? Advice on what to do if its not normal.
Pic here at this link for the yellow bar/line in the images.
