Mating is 1 thing, for syrians, they're territorial creatures, so putting 2 tog can be fatal cos they'll fight to death to kill e other 1, if not u might reach home 1 day to see wounds on e other, thus, syrians have to be housed alone.
If u're intending to get syrians, make sure u read up on em' before doin' so, syrians are v diff from other breeds of hamsters, and they require everything XL sized as well, which is def more ex than other breeds of hammies. :)

guys, dun worry. i know what to do. i have been keeping them for so long liaoz. and i can prove to you that syrians are able to be housed together. male n male, female n female is also possible. it all depends on how you do it and what you house them in. especially if they are babies. is much easier.
as for their stuff, its not much different den a nww or ww or robo. the wheel maybe expensive but den wheels for a normal dwarf hamster is not that cheap either. cages, is about the same or more expensive. i don't recommend adopters to get cages, tanks would be much better. as syrians are escaping hamsters. for a normal cage they can get out easily or they will chew on the metal until it rust, which in then is not good for them.

There is no need to prove anything, becos as long as u keep syrians tog, u are taking a risk, anytime their mother nature seeps in, they'll fight and kill each other, then it'll be too late for anything but regrets.
Babies are fine to be kept tog, but once maturity age is reached, it is crucial that they are housed separately. Cages wise it depends, u can keep em' in tanks as well, however itz more difficult to wash/clean.
Keeping em' for so long yet itz not within ur knowledge that syrians are solitary creatures and hafta be housed alone? :s31:

Note: As cute and cuddly as they may be toward people, they're not friendly with other hamsters, and as they mature, their instincts are to live alone. One of the most important things you can do for your hamster is to give him the living conditions his instincts demand. Syrians are solitary creatures.
For that reason, Syrian hamsters must be housed one to a cage after the age of 6-8 weeks. Even brothers and sisters who played beautifully together when youngsters must be separated for their own safety and well-being. The stress of living with another poses great health risks. Even if they seem fine when you're watching, fights could be happening when you aren't. Worse, even the very first fight can be fatal. Things don't tend to escalate so much as to explode. Many unfortunate hamsters are killed or maimed horribly each year because some owners insist their hamsters are the exception to nature.

TS, yeap they canot be keep together one...
to put it simple, they are 'revengeful' mean that they will remember their enemy for life... they will fight till death...
i used to have two male hamsters and as a new owner without knowledge (impulsive buying by my brother), i put them together(thought they got companionship) until one day, the 'bigger' one attacked(luckily it was a small wound) the smaller one.. then i got anxious, i immediately on the spot went to pet shop and bought another cage for the smaller one...
and they live separately happily ever after :s13::s13:
luckily i got two only, cant imagine if i got 5 cages and the time spent on washing up their cages:D:D

not to worry guys. my sis had syrians for like 5-6 years. She lost her last one a few months back due to old age. So am getting for her for her birthday this year, no point leaving her 3 cages empty. Have just confirmed with her that she will be separating the two, cos personally i only had black bear and robos before, never syrians. Hehe. Of course, she still has a preference for brown/white syrians =p ... meodows

i have read up on wat ever websites there is on syrians. and i can prove that they can leave together. i have friends that have been housing syrians together for a long long time. as long as the tank is big enough. there wouldn't be any problem. but i think that some of u r just newbies to syrians so. i guess i can say that it is not wrong to assume that they can't be housed together.
it is true that syrians are territorial. so it is not wrong to separate them. but thinking about them in the wild, is there any one to separate them? like i say, as long as ur tank is big enough it is possible to house them together.

Juz for ur knowledge again, syrians in the wild live far apart from each other & they haf their own 'territory' which dot no co-exist wif another in close proximity. Datz y, they do not require intentional separation in the wild, im sure ur hammies, live tog in 1 area, and not, 1 in Boon Lay, the other in Pasir Ris right?
Dun prove to us anything pls, because all who haf bred syrians and know their breed, know they cant be housed tog. We are only advising u outta gdwill. But if u're adamant on being the minority of ignorant owners who insist tt their hamsters are the exception to nature & insist on 'proving' tt syrians can live tog, 1 can only wish u all the best, and more so, the lil' ones @ ur mercy. :(

let me ask u again, how long do u change ur bedding? once a week or once a month? have u tried it practically or only theoretically? i have friends that can house 10 over syrians together in a tank and nothing happens.
it is something u have to see to believe. its not something that u can prove with theory. it is something you have to do it practically. i have nothing to say if you think that you are right all the way. they are able to be housed together happily. sleeping together. it all depends on how you look after them.
only ppl who haven done it practically believe that syrians cant be housed together. that was what i believe when i just started out with syrians. what i read about or hear about it true. but when you see it with your own eyes den you will believe that they can be housed together.
yes they are territorial but if you make the effort to change their bedding often this is something that will not happen. if your syrians will fight means u are a lazy owner who doesn't change and sterilize the cages or tanks. that is y they will fight. and it can be also told that you don play with them often also.

FYI, their beddings are changed once/twice a wk. Like i say, pls, dun prove anything to anybody, cos the only pple who suffer here are ya lil' ones.
It is not a belief but a known fact for all who haf done their research and kept syrians from young.
It is only wif regret & much heartache tt I can look upon the lives of many more young ones tt will be lost wif ur persistent ignorance.
:(
Sigh. I rest my case.

Syrian hamsters like to have their homes all to themselves. Syrian hamsters can inflict serious damage to each other when fighting, so as a responsible owner, make sure you do everything you can to prevent fights from breaking out.
Even in the wild Syrians are loners. They get together only for the purpose of mating and even then when the mating is over the male's gotta hightail it on outta there before he's attacked by the female leading to mutilation and/or death. All Syrians past the age of 6 weeks need to be housed separately. People who attempt to keep Syrians together are in my mind in the same category as "Reckless" breeders".
