Acer is crap brand and spoil easily, overheat easily, and the build quality is horrible + terrible - used to be back in 05 - 07
Heres why
if you look at the acer forumz, many ppl are complanining about theirs and the probs are based on the older machines.
Now the acer is way different especially the launch of 6920G, 3 vents at the side, play my friend's 6920 for 6 hours straight nothing but CS, COD4, WOW, Age of Conan temp only 70 degrees. if hardwarezone got allow users to do review I'd like to a review of the 6920. but the design very cartoon bah... :s13: but i think is good. imrpve alot.
any laptop spoil easy if you throw around la. anyhow chuck here chuck there, never defrag harddisk, never scan virus and all that sure kena one. :s13: im using 5920G for exactly one year and still ok. never send repair or get BSOD. :)
VAIO is overpriced because of build quality. and u compromise alot of performance.
edit - u wanna buy acer you can buy the 5930G, got 9600M GT GDDR3 inside, 20% faster than the mainstream 9600M GT DDR2s and run alot cooler also. u just dont buy old and especially used models.
Acer service i dont know, never go before... :D

u can always look for other alternatives? perhaps the likes to ASUS? good specs with reasonable pricing and uncompromised quality.

Their quality has improved over the years, so now is not that bad. Still, I'll rather go for an Asus or a Benq if I am looking for a bargain performance laptop.
Why only Acer and Sony Vaio? Typically consumer laptops that look good may neglect in other areas... There are so many other possibilities out there.

Honestly you can buy 2 Acer's for the price of one Vaio, almost. Depends on what you use it for, Acer new ones comes with a decent warranty they have upped their quality somewhat.

Yup... Vaio is super overpriced, you look at the spec, you will realised that the parts they used (the cpu, the gfx) is like slower than what the other companies are using (such as asus, hp). I don't know about vaio's build quality, but seeing the price alone, it scares me away...

why not Compaq/HP ? not that bad also .... or lenovo ?
unless the acer is free... if not... Nope.. wont buy

I'd say give it a chance. Get the 5930G with centrino 2, a good t9600 processor and a 9600M GT with 512mb dedicated GDDR3 gfx, which is something rare to have currently in singapore which all 9600Ms only offer DDR2. it offers a huge 25% performance increase tha nthe 9600Ms with ddr2 and runs alot cooler and uses less energy... build quality has improved somewhat. Only $2800 better than the overpriced Vaio which cant perform but look and stare cos' of nice design.
like i said, avoid at all times old acer models, and never ever buy 2nd hand one. you'll regret it.

Your computer won't be spoiled when it gets infected with a virus. The most it will happen is you won't be able to boot up.

I see sony laptop before but the specification are very low and if you want to get better specification you had to pay a lot of money. The only thing that was made by sony is the dvd drive the rest are from different manufacturer. Sony laptop is casing colours is very attractive.
Acer is good for specification and cheap and if you take good care of your laptop then it will lasts many years. But buy acer laptop you must wait for acer promotions because they giving out free gifts like 2.5 inch external hard disk, free rams or printer. If you buy without promotion free gifts you lost out.

To directly answer your questions.
1. Most of the problems is because they buy a budget laptop but use like a $3k laptop. Still applies even till today when people buy cheap UMPC and expect it to work like a C2D laptop.
2. Vaio is vastly overpriced since they are selling the style and Sony branding.
Even Fujitsu already no more 100% Made in Japan, just about all laptops are made in china so most of the time experienced buyers will know how much they should be paying for a set of specs.
Whatever it is, just get extended warranty for peace of mind and an external hdd for backup.

That is very sad and true. They should probably learn to accept to what the very extent it can do, rather than forcing it to do something that it can't, and start making silly complains "Oh so slow!" and "Hang all the time, I'm so pissed!" etc. I get all the time this silly argument from my friends and I'm sick of it. And yes I always believe till this day, you pay what you get, you reap what you sow.
In any case I see nothing in using Acer as well. I was an Acer user, till I sold it away because my dad's friend wanted to purchase it. And I bought that from school... The Acer Aspire 5685 WLMi to be exact... I even mod and Dual Boot it to Vista 64, + XP 32 and added a paste of Arctic Silver in it, which was added 6 months from purchase. It ran well all the time and never even had a single problem.
You know its surprising that the only laptop brand that I heard and seen off from my peers that I see it last for many years is Acer. It can work to an extreme extent for many years and achieve a long lifespan if you care for it properly. I know one who use his Acer for nearly 5 and a half years, coming to 6, and still boots up in 40 secs and works like a charm. (One of which because I help maintained his Acer for him)

Not true. They are complaining because Acer's service is really CMI and you can't be certain that they can fix your laptop. While if your laptop is an Asus they'll fix your laptop for sure. That's why paying more for a better brand is worth it. The ones who praise Acer are probably the ones who are lucky and never got a problem with their laptop.

No. His referring to laptop users as a whole, and how people expect low end laptops to behave like a 3k laptop, regardless of brand, which is not acceptable. Read carefully.

Well..my office is beside Acer Bldg. I've been to Acer Service Center afew times and had always noticed the Service Center to be very packed with people. Seems like their laptops sure got some issues...
My cousin's laptop is one good example. It seems that their recovery partition and some of their softwares has some issues with the device drivers and they ended up replacing the whole motherboard..and the prob still occurs.
In the end, I formatted the laptop using the normal method instead of using the recovery partition and only installed the required drivers. No probs after tht.

It all depends on users in my opinion. How they maintain their hdd etc., proper installation of softwares etc. i guess. My acer 5685wlmi is doing well after 2 years, changed hdd to higher capacity and upgraded the ram...no issues. I guess all laptops produce heat, depends on how you perceive whether its too warm or not. Acer is basically value for money and screen wise is one of the better ones around; lenovo is basically for the metal hinges that connects the screen to the notebook; very sturdy. My ibm R51 lasted me 5 years, dropped twice from work table to the floor; still going strong, only thing for lenovo is that the screen ain't that attractive and its kinda heavy. HP models can be quite costly, if you are the budget constraint type. I'm currently using acer 4930g-944G32Mn, so far so good; jus that had to remove the many unwanted softwares that come with it. Boot times are impressive. Just my 2 cents worth.

I would seriously advise against it. to be honest I have never owned a acer before(their design just doesn't appeal to me) but according to alot of my friends, a large majority of them had hardware related problems with 1 year. and they have also swear that they will never ever get an acer again.

Go by what you think.
You may hear all the good things about it but your heart is really the one accepting it.
Just follow your heart once and go ahead with it. 2 years down the road you will be the one sharing your experience, and at that time you will know whether Acer is reliable or not.

it all depends how much you are paying and your realistic expectations. Even a many thousand dollar HP or other brands laptop can breakdown if used for non stop gaming or overnight downloading and etc. To me not really important as i see the specs and the small details more than the branding and the marketing hype.
whatever brand and model you decide with, extended onsite warranty is a must.

Acer computers and (especially) their after-sales service is ABSOLUTE JUNK, and I'm saying this from experience.
With so many brands and other options available, buying Acer is the LAST thing you want to spend your hard-earned cash on!

depends from case to case. If have problem with the service just bring it up to the management.
For experienced bargain hunters, most of the time they use Acer pricings of equivalent specs as comparison against the laptops they want to buy to see whether worth or not.

erictan1234,
Can I ask you a bold question?
What made you choose between Acer and Sony VAIO? Is because of its performance, pricing, style, or what? What made you restrict to these two brands anyway?
Now I'm a person who doesn't like to jump conclusions, a good tech man would ask questions in detail before making any form of assumption for the user.
What kind of things will you be doing on your laptop? Do you intend to play any games? If so, what are they? Crysis, COD4, HL2? Or light games such as WOW and etc? And what other kinds of stuff do you do? Words, Powerpoint, or other intensive applications like photoshop, 3ds max and other work stuff?
Because the kind of stuff you do will be important to determine the kind of notebook you really need. I'd probably would like to end the Acer vs VAIO saga once and for all, and help you decide and good laptop in general, free from the branding alternatives and restrictions.... Those are the least important things in my opinion. Look at the specs they offer instead... Go test it out in person if possible... Give them a call and arrange a time to drop by and test it out, and they'll gladly help you. You know that is how I actually buy a laptop. :) And as AS1 pointed out, a good or an extended onsite warranty IS, please ALWAYS, please... a must, regardless if your chosen notebook whether be it Acer or Sony if it last for just 1 year or 5 years or more.
Because any notebook regardless an Acer, an Asus will also fail if you don't take care of it properly, even if a 6000 dollar XPS system will fail too. The best medicine is prevention, not cure. For service centres as an experience user, be nice, keep a good diplomatic tone with the one you're speaking to, and just maintain your dignity and they'll help.

hi,
mainly using the laptop to:
1. surf internet,
2. edit document files etc
3. edit photographs using CS3
4. play only one game: pro evolution soccer
consider acer as it seems that the price is pretty cheap for the configuration....
and vaio due to its design....
didn't think about toshiba compaq etc as they are like the in-between... (my opinion...could be wrong)
ha ha.... that's all....
any advise is appreciated...
thanks

All these may be quite impossible for the Compaq Presario V3000 series, but the newly released Compaq Presario CQ45 series may be able to do it, as it comes with dedicated graphics, something which never appeared in Compaq laptops for a few years already.
An advertisement revealed that it was available in Harvey Norman Funan, although I have never seen it there. I suppose it will show up at the COMEX show then.
It comes with NVIDIA graphics with 256MB of memory. Quite mid-range and should be sufficient for your use.
