[Guide] Offline Google Maps for 2.x Firmware

To Add Offline Google Maps


METHOD 1

1. Install Offline Maps app via BigBoss repo source in Cydia.

2. Download and unzip maps files.
For FW2.2. Dated 3 December 08, Here. (http://www.mediafire.com/?ie9cz4ywpm6)
For FW2.1 and below. Here (http://ifile.it/yersjwp) or here. (http://www.mediafire.com/?25rzk6rwcwh)

3. Place MapTiles.sqlitedb and com.apple.Maps.plist under /var/mobile/Media/Maps/Singapore/

4. Download maps bookmarks plist file from here. (http://www.mediafire.com/?tgutmwgtp0w)

5. OpenSSH the bookmarks plist file to /var/mobile/Library/Maps/ (Note: Again, create folder if it isnt in existence.)

6. Respring Springboard.

7. Launch Offline Maps app, you will be prompt to process the map, select 'Copy' instead of 'Link'. 'Link will also work, but it may bloat up your cache. Note: Processing of the maps takes about 2 mins+-. If it takes mere seconds, that means it did not process the maps properly. Try 'Copy' again.

METHOD 2

Note: Method 2 is only for those with 离线地图 app. The app is no longer available on Cydia.

1. Download and unzip maps files.

2. OpenSSH the maps files to /var/mobile/Media/Maps/m/ (Note: Create folders that are not in existence.)

4. OpenSSH the bookmarks plist file to /var/mobile/Library/Maps/ (Note: Again, create folder if it isnt in existence.)

5. Respring Springboard.

6. Tap on LM2 icon on Springboard once. (Note: Springboard will just fade in and out.)

7. Tap on Maps app, and voila!~! Now you can search for the 700+ street locations offline, previously available on DataBinge's TimeCapsule.

To add more locations to bookmarks plist

1. Search for new location with Wifi, 3G or GPRS.
2. Tap on blue circular arrow.
3. Choose 'Add to Bookmarks'.
4. Edit desired name.
5. Save.

That true in a way.. Have to download the maps in hotel first before making a move using the hotel's wifi. Hopefully someone will make it available via the App Store..
Else will be incurring roaming data charges..

Getting maps of different countries not that hard, its the street names location bookmark.plist file that is the tricky one.

hy.565, A-GPS doesnt work without 3G or wifi in the first place. Offline maps work more like a street directory of sorts.

A-GPS won't work without those connections, however GPS will work. GPS does not require any data connection, it's the loading of the maps that typically needs a data connection.

yup, before applying this mod I tried turning off my wifi and 3g and pressed the locate me button and maps could find my position, although the radius is wider than if I were using wifi.

But now when I apply this mod, I turn of wifi and 3g, I press the locate me and it just loads forever...

EDIT: just tried, and the locate me feature works now, without wifi :o, weird..

I always have problems using street directory, it gets me to the rough location but i can visualize the actual place im looking for.

So hybrid helps me better. Thats just me though.

if you do not have cell signal how can u have GPRS?
BTw, A-GPS can run without anything (GPRS/3G/wifi). Just change to flight mode, off wifi and try outdoor. It will take longer time though.

Haize i give up.
I did everything as posted but then it kept showing cant connect to internet.
I download the Offline Maps from Bug Boss Repo.
After that i ssh into iphone and place the MapTiles.sqlitedb and com.apple.Maps.plist under /var/mobile/Media/Maps/Singapore/ (in the media there was no maps so i create a folder Maps then put the Singapore folder with the two file inside the Maps)
The bookmarks was display in my maps but i cant Route.
Any ideas why?

I used this method. Copy the map instead of link. Show me a message saying done and ask me to return to home and launch the map. How exactly do I launch the map? I see nothing!

u can have it as /var/mobile/Media/Maps/Singapore/ but they recommend that the Singapore folder rename to 4 character long instead.

anyway to your question, i used link instead of copy. so just go to the maps application [its the default provided by apple one] and open. then select 1 location from your bookmark and shuld zoom u into singapore already

i suppose u are using offlines maps instead of the "LI XIAN ..." . after doing all the necessary, you can access ur MAPS app from default iphone applications. remember to switch off ur wifit,3g etc to test.

hmm, i just noticed that the blocks details are missing when the offline map is copied over. Even if I use wireless and open up google map the details are also missing. When I uninstall and remove the offline map, if start to work again.. that is bad.. =(

street names. when u wana search a place, there is this small blue booklet. offline maps serves as a street directory as pointed out by some ppl. but if u want routes, u can surf using wifi to get it and check for the same route later on offline.

Place com.apple.Maps.plist and MapTiles.sqlitedb in /var/mobile/Media/Maps/SG.

Place Bookmarks.plist into /var/mobile/Library/Maps.

You cannot search without an internet connection, but manually selecting the road name from the bookmark list works. With an internet connection, maps load much faster (no need to download). Helps a lot if you are still on 2G (like me).

The only gripe I have is that the map is quite outdated, it doesn't show HDB buildings for example. But better than no map, I guess!

Hi, I had placed the files in their respective places correctly. With/ without an internet connection, I still cannot access the bookmark to scroll through the street names. What should I do to make maps.app to acknowledge the bookmark plist?

Firstly, can you access the list of bookmarks, does it show up, when you press the blue book, and press on the left most button below that says bookmarks? If that list is empty (the 1st item should say 'Current Location') then you're probably doing something wrong. If the list is there it should work, it worked for me. If the list is there and it doesn't work maybe try to adjust the permissions of Bookmarks.plist, it should say 644, at least for mine it's that. Oh if it's in the right place, there should be a Recents.plist file as well.

hmm, i just noticed that the blocks details are missing when the offline map is copied over. Even if I use wireless and open up google map the details are also missing. When I uninstall and remove the offline map, if start to work again.. that is bad.. =(
I dont think the original Google maps has all the blks details as well.

Actually the map I uploaded fixes this. The original maps posted were out of date (I think pre-2.0 era)

Actually I wanted to try, but if I include all the maps down to 1x zoom it will be about 15GB(!) large. The only way for it to make sense is to only include up to 8x zoom, which brings the size down to 300+MB, but I don't know the usefulness of the map this way, I don't stay in malaysia so I wouldn't know. Unless I break it up by area but then again I'm not too familiar with the geography of the country. Sorry about that.

yea I know this, what I'm asking is how to make it more detailed.

I wanna make a more detailed bookmarks.plist of the streets, the current one leaves out alot of smaller roads.

For those who are driving, you may wish to look into xwave's xgps ("http://xgps.xwaves.net/). It gives you the directional feel of where you are heading to, and provide speed update. It allows you to download maps offline directly off the software to cache for offline use.

The route planning uses google map however, still requires internal connection in order to plot your trip.
There was a "Freemap software" in the demo works like a regular in-car GPS module with voice, however I can't seem to google it out. Wonder anyone have a clue?

*Think its a slight improved turn-to-turn google map, slightly buggy. The offline map which xwaves's database takes up only 39mb for SG map. However, it only records driving direction as bookmark, so its internet dependent.

Hope to hear feedback if you had tried using.

5. OpenSSH the bookmarks plist file to /var/mobile/Library/Maps/ (Note: Again, create folder if it isnt in existence.)

6. Respring Springboard.

7. Launch Offline Maps app, you will be prompt to process the map, select 'Copy' instead of 'Link'. 'Link will also work, but it may bloat up your cache. Note: Processing of the maps takes about 2 mins+-. If it takes mere seconds, that means it did not process the maps properly. Try 'Copy' again.

anywayz, u should off ur wifi/3g/edge 1st to see it its working. else maps will auto use e internet connections instead of using the offline maps.

Well, I found a solution that was posted at the main forum but I haven't tried it yet.

For 2.2, due to the database format change, old maps won't work.

So we have to use Mapv4v5Converter to convert it.

Seems to work fine on mine, I suspect it might be Holux vs what is inside the 3G.

Offline Route function will support in FW 2.2 I downloaded the OfflineMaps.pyo and replaced it already. Then I used Wifi to plot a route in maps, went to OfflineMaps, Edit, Import Route and named the route, it stated that the route is imported but it doesn't appear in my list.

theres a change in the dir location in the latest update of offline maps...now everything goes into /var/mobile/Media/Maps ;) Only the MapTiles.sqlitedb & com.apple.Maps.plist is in 1 the sub dir Singapore...i dont use routing so i dont know if it works...but its worth a try :D

With your on location switch on, it does find you. I try it while driving yesterday, very satisfying.

with edge, wifi turned off...i cant find my current location my clicking the crosshair icon while in offline maps.

Did you all try XGPS from Cydia?? It is a free software which gives driving directions using Google Maps and it has an option to cache maps for offline.

I do not have the Copy option and I clicked link. However, the link only took 1-2 secs and after that I tried to accessed the map, does not seems to link up as there is the turning flower-lookealike symbol when I tried to move the map.

I have intelliscreen , works fine with offline map. Just make sure you have copy
your files in the right directory.

To add more locations to bookmarks plist

1. Search for new location with Wifi, 3G or GPRS.
2. Tap on blue circular arrow.
3. Choose 'Add to Bookmarks'.
4. Edit desired name.
5. Save.

Note: Tap on blue 'book' icon at search bar, to edit or delete.

!st up, thanks for the pretty straight forward instructions on pg 1 with regards to getting my offline maps thingy done up.

I just realise that it now works great as a standalone street directory, kinda sucks like it still needs internet connection for directions pt-to-pt. :(

I always thought after Jailbreak, simple stuff like direction guidance /navigation using only GPS is not possible still. Makes me miss a little of Windows Mobile.

den i restarted but when i open offline maps, and click on Singapore, it says processing map and an option of either cancel or link

there isnt a copy option...

i click on link, den immediately it pops up, process finish.....and i click ok....and nothing happens...

:s8:Well, you missed the last step. Go open the standard Maps application on your iphone.

FYI, i too did not get the "copy" option .. only the link, but so far its pretty ok. Only wished after doing all this, I was able to do routing offline. Guess it still got limitations.

Hi guys, been using offline map since 1.1.4 FW. Way back then, when i type a letter B for instance on the search box, google map will actually display all the B roads that I have in the bookmarks, for instance, Braddell Road, so I just need to scroll from the SEARCH BOX to choose.

But now, to find New Bridge Road (as it starts with N), i need to scroll from the BOOKMARKS instead of typing an N on the search box.

Did i do something wrong or the new google map FW makes it this way? Anyone knows how to rectify that?
