U mean divx?
use Divx Converter. http://www.divx.com/
.avi is just an extension.

alternatively, if you just play on PC and not stang alone players, can convert to H.264 format using Nero Recode. The latest Nero recode version utilise all the 2 or 4 core of the cpu. Really fast encoding. Recoding a 7gb dvd to 700mb cd takes about 40 mins using quad core. Video quality is as good, if not better than divx. Subtitiles supported. Play back using the free vlc media player.

Try AlltoAVI. Good and easy to use tool to convert anything to anything else. But the plugins for merging and splitting need to run in W98 compat mode.

btw, how do I extract soft subtitles from dvd drama? because apparently when i google they seems to be saying that those are bitmap images....but I cannot find the solution to extract it

use dvd decryptor to rip the DVD then use AutoGK (http://www.autogk.me.uk/modules.php?name=TutorialEN) to convert to MP4/Divx. I prefer to use Gordian Knot (http://www.doom9.org/gknot-main2.htm), have not been updated for 3 years, supposely superseded by AutoGK.

First, you got to transfer yr DVD video files to yr pc which we called it 'rip' using RipIt4Me or any dvd 'ripper' software...
Next you can use any software listed below to convert it to AVi..
My personal fav. are AutoMKV and AutoGK...Use Subrip to extract the subtitles..
