Gallas: 7.0 -
Has come under-fire recently. He's not a good captain... he's not a good defender. Tonight though he guided his team well on the pitch, and maintained a suitable line.

Toure: 7.5 -
Confused the Porto defence with his running that led to Emmanuel Adebayor heading a Robin Van Persie corner kick home. Fast, recovered well, tracked back. A good performance.

Clichy: 7.5 -
Mirrored Bacary Sagna runs and darted forward with ease giving Arsenal extra width. Sound attacking vision, but at times, his final ball let him down.

Walcott: 8.5 -
His turn of pace and ability to accelerate with the ball at his feet had the Porto defence running scared. Made great darting runs. Could, and perhaps should, have scored in front of Fabio Capello but will overall be pleased with his performance. There is still more to come from the boy though...

Denilson: 6.5 -
Sloppy in possession in the first half and needlessly gave the ball away.

Fabregas: 8.5 -
Played the 'quarterback' role superbly. Picked countless passes with a nonchalant audacity. Great one-two for the first goal.

Nasri: 8.0 -
Has come back from injury well. Showed great skill to leave his opposition for dead.

van Persie: 8.5 -
Finished a great move to take the lead and sealed the win with a poaching toe poke three minutes after the second half break.

Adebayor: 8.5 -
Has his critics, has his admirers... but tonight had his hand in a plethora of Arsenal's best chances. Deserved his brace. Cool penalty taker.

Looks like a quality, quality option. Made an outstanding cameo appearance and dribbled around defenders like they were training ground cones.

Bendtner: 7.5 -
Won the penalty. Linked up play well, and fed Adebayor a golden chance that the Togolese striker dragged wide.

Eboue: 7.5 -
Struck the post and made some clever runs. Not bad from a right-back/ right-midfielder/ central midfielder/ unpredictable utility man.

Cut out and Adebayor run and tackled well on Theo Walcott desite it not being his flank, but was one of three who were at fault for Arsenal's third.

Rolando: 5.5 -
Needs a lesson in man-marking.

Alves: 5.0 -
Ditto above. Should take a long, hard look at himself in the mirror and utter the words: 'I will not be this bad again.' Disgraceful defending in the build up to Robin Van Persie's second, and Arsenal's third goal.

Sapunaru: 7.0 -
Is supposed to be Jose Bosingwa's replacement, but has nowhere near the attacking flair of the new Chelsea man judging from this performance. Made some good blocks though.

Meireles: 6.0 -
Could not contain Cesc Fabregas and was replaced by Hulk in the second half.

Fernando: 5.0 -
Could hardly be found on the ball in the first half and rightly made way for Lucho during the break.

Costa: 7.5 -
Was one of the few shining lights for Porto, and if his side were going to find a breakthrough it was either going to arrive from Costa or Rodriguez. Left two Gunners in his stride and had a pop on goal from a wide area.

Rodriguez: 7.5 -
Hit the crossbar on a quick counter. Made some decent dribbles cutting inside.

Lisandro: 7.0 -
Good curving effort on goal on the 25th minute.

Guarin: 5.5 -
Posed no threat, but gave away a penalty when he whacked away at Bendtner's legs.

Lucho: 5.5 -
Made little impact when he came on.

Hulk: 6.0 -
Tried a flambouyant shot two minutes from time in an attempt to salvage some pride for his side but the execution was far from incredible.

Malafeev 7.5 - Made some very good saves, in particular to deny Higuaín, and will have been pleased with his defence in the second half as they held out.

Anyukov 6.5 - Certainly had a far more difficult opening 45 minutes than he did after the break and looked comfortable.

Sirl 7 - Made stunning tackle to deny De la Red at one end and tested Casillas with a low drive at the other in what was a good performance.

Hubocan 6 - Unfortunate with the own goal and made up for it with a vital header after the break that denied Madrid a clear chance.

Puygrenier 6.5 - Struggled when Van der Vaart was on form and Van Nistelrooy kept dropping deep and was outpaced by Higuaín after the interval.

Tymoshchuk 6.5 - The captain sat in front of the back four, but was slow at closing down and should have blocked Van der Vaart for the winner.

Denisov 7 - In the second period every Zenit player raised their game and he was one of the unsung heroes of the turnaround.

Zyryanov 6 - Had a chance to draw his side level, but was denied and that could have seen his rating move up slightly.

Danny 8 - Took his goal very well as he pounced when Heinze paused and should have levelled late on for the hosts.

Arshavin 8.5 - Consistent throughout as he helped his side make opening in the first half and showed that he can use both feet in the second.

Pogrebnyak 6 - Was far more effective before the break than in the second half, but even then he did not test Casillas and needed more service.

Sergio Ramos 7 - Strong down the right although Zenit did pass him on occasion and created chances from their left wing.

Heinze 6 - Should never have allowed Zenit to draw level as he could have easily attacked the ball and kicked it out rather try the header.

Cannavaro 5.5 - Looked shaky for most of the game and will have been very relieved that Pepe was alongside him to cover up.

Pepe 8 - A very strong game at the back in both halves and he put himself about picking up knocks to his head and legs.

Diarrà 6.5 - Impressed in the opening period, but filed to prevent Zenit from making into the area in the second period as Madrid were forced back.

De la Red 6 - Showed some very good touches early on in both halves, but could not create much late on with the emphasis on defending.

Robben 6.5 - Anther who had a very lively game in parts but will know that he should have put the game beyond doubt with the chances he had.

Higuaín 6.5 - Should have done so much better with his opportunities, but he was creative when the visitors enjoyed spell of pressure before the break.

Van der Vaart 7 - Had a very strong first period before slightly disappearing after the break when Madrid were pushed back. Good decision to change him.

Van Nistelrooy 7 - Rected very well to net what proved to be the winning goal and worked hard for his team by dropping back.

Javi García 6 - Was another player to block Zenit's progression but did little to stand out when coming on.

Saviola 6 - Really had very little time to show what he can do as he was brought on to relieve pressure on the defence.

Drenthe 6 - A perfect set for the Madrid substitutes as the Dutchman's analysis could be cut and pasted from Javi García's.

Aalborg BK

Zaza – 7.0: The Aalborg number one picked up where he left off against Celtic, with a solid display in goals for his side tonight. Made the score line a little more respectable than it could have been, and should be commended on his efforts.

Bogelund – 6.5: Gave his all throughout the entirety of the contest, working hard down the right all night. He had a tremendous opportunity to equalize moments after the Rooney goal to make it 1-1.

Beauchamp – 5.0: The Australian, who had his incorrect red card from last match revoked, was unfortunately forced to withdraw after just 39 minutes due to injury. He wasn’t bad early, however may have given Rooney a little too much space, allowing him to net the first goal of the match.

(Caca – 6.0: The midfielder came on to replace the injured man late in the second half, and he certainly proved to be on of his side’s better performers throughout, as he controlled the midfield in patches, and headed a number of Aalborg attacking movements.)

Olfers – 4.5: Similar to his partner at the back, Olfers started brightly, however wasn’t great for the large majority of the contest. His poor pass across the face of goal is what led to Berbatov netting his first.

Pedersen – 5.5: Had a quiet opening half, but came to life in the second, working hard at both ends of the park, crossing well and acting as another attacking option.

Augustinussen– 4.0: He started well in the midfield, however following the substitution of Beauchamp; the captain was forced to play in the centre of defence alongside Olfers, and his performance deteriorated as a result. His howling mistake early into the second half led to the United second goal.

Johansson – 4.0: One of the more experienced players in the Aalborg line-up tried hard throughout, but did a little too much at times. He was selfish and lost the ball too easily and too often. He also managed to pick up a caution following a poor challenge on Rafael.

Risgaard – 6.0: One player who was certainly impressive when the match was in the balance early, and who despite the three goal deficit, still fought it out till the very end.

Enevoldsen – 5.5: Didn’t do all that much over the course of this match, however was disciplined when the opposition were in possession of the ball. He offered support at both ends of the park, and didn’t make many errors over the ninety minutes.

Curth – 5.0: Had some glorious opportunities to notch his side’s first goal for the campaign, including their best chance of the contest that came midway through the second half, following a tremendous team build-up.

Saganowski – 5.5: The lone striker was isolated up front for the most of the match, and had to work hard against the United defence. He lacked support up front, and thus found it tough to overcome the physical prowess of both Ferdinand and Vidic at the back for United.

Van der Sar – 6.5: Wasn’t forced into making too many saves on the night, and thus was a fairly anonymous figure all match.

Rafael – 8.0: A sensational European debut from the 18-year-old right-back, who is an adventurous young man, capable of anything on his day. He took the game on, on more than one occasion tonight, and offered plenty at both ends of the field.

Ferdinand – 8.0: An absolute rock at the back once again, as he nullified the impact of Saganowski and the other attacking players of Aalborg. The highlight of his performance was undoubtedly the world-class block on Bogelund, to deny the home side of a fast reply to the Rooney goal.

Vidic – 7.5: Similar to his defensive partner, Vidic was solid all match, however unlike Ferdinand; he wasn’t called upon to ever make a world class block. He failed to put a foot wrong all night, and was as solid as ever.

Evra – 6.5: A relatively quiet performance today from the Frenchman, however he did show glimpses of brilliance, especially in the second half. He didn’t do much wrong, however was simply just not involved in the proceedings all that often.

Cristiano Ronaldo – 7.5: Certainly not his best match by any stretch of the imagination, however the Portuguese maestro still played his part, and despite not getting his name on to the score sheet, his sheer determination and brilliance was what led to Berbatov’s second, and United’s third goal of the match.

Scholes – N/A: Lasted less than 15 minutes, following the injury he sustained in a clash with Augustinussen. He was replaced by Ryan Giggs.

(Giggs – 7.5: Started extremely well, and was involved in absolutely everything early. His glorious through ball is what led to Rooney netting the first, however as the match wore on, the veteran’s impact slowly began to decrease.)

O’Shea – 6.5: Wasn’t called upon all that often today, however he went about his business in a professional manner and did all he could to ensure his side were dominant in the midfield and successful on the night.

Nani – 7.0: Similar to O’Shea, Nani failed to set the world on fire tonight, however he just did what he had to, and failed to put a foot wrong all night.

Berbatov – 8.5: Finally managed to score in United colours, thanks to two stunning finishes that gave the Aalborg keeper no chance whatsoever. Not only did he score on two occasions, but he also worked hard at bringing others into the contest, something that will certainly please Sir Alex Ferguson.

Rooney – 7.5: Certainly deserved a goal in the first half, and was rewarded from Giggs, following his tremendous through ball. He worked hard in the final third for the entirety of his match tonight, which was brought to an early end due to injury.
