Ok this is gonna be a long story so here it goes.

First i own 2 laptops, a MacBookPro and a old Dell Inspiron.

One day, i accidentally tip my dell and it dropped, everything was fine, but suddenly it had some scratching sound, then later my windows crashed. After calling the dell hotline, under warranty, i manage to get my hard disk changed, and they will lend me the hard disk for 2 wks to retrieve my data. So i went ahead to get a external box for my 2.5inch hard disk. I plug everything in and hope that using the usb cable, i can get back all my data.

BUT!!!

After i plug the "external" hard disk into my dell inspiron, it installed a hardware as usual, but it took longer then usual, so i waited. After its done, i go to "my computer" but it hung. "my computer" window became not responding. So i tried again. Same thing happened. So i gave up and try to plug it into my mac.

Luckily,

The MacBookPro detected the hard disk and i was able to explore the inside of it. So i found all my data still inside. I began to copy the stuff then an error message came out "the operation cannot be completed because you do not have sufficient privileges for some of the items". So in the end i couldn't copy anything. So i tried copying selected files, and usually the .docs and .txt are able but most of my files are unable to copy over.

So any kind souls out there able to help me out with this situation?

Or recommend me any shops in Sim Lim for data recovery that is cheap?

Or any software?

Please help and thanks in advance.

Sorry for taking up your time to read this.

I'm not too sure what can you do with the MAC, if you can get hold of another working PC, refer to this. (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308421)

Ok firstly thanks for the advice, but the problem is i do have other working pcs, and my dell is already working. However, when i plug the "external hard disk" into my other owrking pcs, "my computer" will freeze and i can't get access to the hard disk. I tried on one of my vista com, it has the "safely remove hardware" tab and i went to properties, it says the "external hard disk" "device working properly", but when i go to the "my computer" it jsut hangs there and i can't even see any of my drives. It seems like the only way to explore the drive is by using the MacBookPro. Thanks anyway :)

Try booting up using a Linux Live CD and try to transfer the files to another hard disk. Mac OS has restrictions copying certain files from an NTFS volume.

Assuming that you placed the dell harddisk into the USB enclosesure and attempted to copy the data out. Even if it still runs and detected by the laptops, your harddisk could be completely spoilt. I.e. no hope of recovery other then to send data specialist to retrieve the data for you. In that case have to spend the $$$ if your data is really critical.

Alright, thanks everyone for all your time and effort in helping me.

I've sort of hired a technician, and he says that it is my hard disk motor spoilt, so yea.

Thanks for all the help though.

you can still recover your data if the motor is spoilt. i recovered my data with data savers aka seagate recovery services. do a google search for their url.
