yes, you can see snow in January, its even colder than December. the bad thing is when you go up to the popular mountain resorts, some outdoor activities will be closed.
i went in December and there was a snow blizzard...meaning cannot take nice photo of swiss alps

Train systems are very punctual and efficient in Switzerland. Pick a few cities you wish to visit, eg Lucerne, Geneva, Zurich, Interlaken etc. Look at a map of Switzerland to figure out a more smooth route. No problem to go over to France or Germany overland. We actually bought Eurail tickets covering the 3 countries. It's cheaper because the train tickets also cover most buses and ferries.
For city to city, tickets can be bought at the station. But best to check beforehand (like upon arrival in a city) when the departure train is the next day. They are very punctual; to the dot! Can stay B & B. Most accept credit cards. Truth be told, we didn't even book hotels beforehand :s22:!
On cold days, mountain trips can mean seeing nothing but a blanket of white!
For food, if on budget, go to supermarkets. They sell cooked pasta in containers. Bread everywhere. Eat until sian. Hope this helps.

Hi intriguer,
I just returned from a Europe trip, we went by train from Paris to Lucerne and then took the train out to Milan, Italy. As Jellybelly mentioned, the trains are very punctual and easy to use.
Lucerne is a small quaint town, do visit it and take a trip to Mount Pilatus nearby, you will definitely see snow when you go all the way to the top becoz of the high altitute. There is also the Tower Bridge and the Lion of Lucerne monument to see there. We enjoyed the stay in Lucerne very much.
Do buy a Eurarail pass before you go, it's easy to use and hence you dun need to waste time to queue to buy train tickets when you are there.
The currency in Swiss is CHF, you can change your currency there from the banks or numerous money-changers if needed.
Just ask if you have any queries

Switzerland is rather expensive and when u want to travel to the cities do remember to get ur Eurail pass. The main city is Basel. You might want to start ur trip there.

Just got back from there last month. In Summary : Love it !!! Here's my 3 cents view.
1. Jan definitely a cold month to visit. But the snow and the scenery are really lovely and beautiful. Prepare for warm clothing.
2. Chinese food definitely expensive, as it is considered "luxury" there. Paid Swiss Franc $4 for a bowl of plain rice
3. Lucerne, Interlakan and Geneva a must
