I intend to have wireless internet at home.

I will be using 1 desktop with Windows 2003 server connected with wired LAN. I will be using 1 or 2 laptops (Win XP Pro) through wireless.

I would like to know what hardware is required for wireless internet access.

Is it true that for singnet I will need a landline telephone connection also?

What equipment is required for starhub? If possible, please mention the brand/models which are considered to be good.

I want to buy the hardware on my own because I do not want to go for the contract.

Thanks for your help

If u sign for singnet, opt for the wireless modem, is a modem and router 2 in 1..... called 2WIRE..........

Wireless ADSL modem router for your singnet line and wireless PCI card, USB dongle or PCMCIA card for your PC / laptops. Any brand model will work, just buy all same so that anything wrong or need setup help, calling their support line easier to settle all.

Everything considered good, budget more, buy wireless N instead of G, more good speed.

Can someone please tell me which is a good brand/model?

Yes, I do have a wireless adapter in my laptop. I do not intend to have a separate PCIMCIA card.

I will be using my laptop wireless adapter to connect to the internet through the wireless modem and will use wired Ethernet adapter on my computer. So the wireless modem should have at least 1 Ethernet port.

For Singnet, you need to have an ADSL modem plus a wireless router, or you can get a combined wireless modem router (also callled a wireless gateway). You will need a working land line to connect the modem.

For Starhub, you will have to get a cable modem from them. Alternatively, the Hub Station has a cable modem built-in. In addition, you need to get a wireless router (make sure you DON'T get the wireless modem router).

I believe all wireless routers will have at least 1 ethernet port to connect to a wired PC.

Brandwise, my DLink is starting to give off a high-pitch sound so I may try another reputable brand like Linksys, Belkin or Buffalo.

For Starhub, you will have to get a cable modem from them.

Thanks for the info surefire888. Does that mean the cable modem taken from starhub cannot be used for another operator?

I intend to move out of Singapore in some time and am looking at the equipment as a one-time investment. In such a case should I go for ADSL technology or cable technology?

Thanks

For your first question, I don't know the answer. I would expect a cable modem to work with other cable operators' systems too but on the other hand, I think most cable operators will provide a free cable modem when you sign up with them.

Having said that, if you are buying it for long-term use, the best thing to do might be to buy a wireless router which will work with both cable as well as ADSL modems. Will not be as convenient as a do-it-all wireless modem cum router (will need 2 power inputs) but will give you the flexibility you want.

That's it. Does that mean other DLink models don't have this prob?
