hi all, i need a little advice. i changed to Singtel from Starhub last friday, taking up the 10mbps/ month + macbook. when the guy came down to install, he told me he needed to connect to a phone line which my 3rd floor doesnt have, so he set up the modem on the 2nd floor, when i checked, my wireless signal strength on my laptop was only 1 to 2 bars when im using on the 3rd floor. is this normal? when i was with starhub (same 10mbps plan) there wasnt any signal issues nor disconnection issues that i need to deal with even from the 1st to 3rd floor.
i have tried using speedtest during 2-3am and it shows less than 5mbps and yesterday it was only slightly below 2mbps! i tried changing the wireless channel as advised but it will shot up to full signal strength and then plunge down or even disable my wireless altogether. i called the singnet helpdesk and after repeated calls to them asking for advice, the guy told me to go and buy something called "booster" in sim lim and get it fixed and singnet will pay which i find ridiculous because i've never had such issues and now they are telling me to resolve it by myself.
did any one experience this? 2wire will be coming down to inspect if the fault lies with the modem but if i'm beside the modem my signal strength is almost full. meaning it's probably nothing to do with the modem right?
thanks all in advance. im sorry im not technical but i've tried seeking advice from my friends to no avail hence trying to seek a solution from hwz.

when you are using starhub, your router is on level 3 right? starhub is connect thru cable & singnet is by phone line.

yup it was on the 3rd floor. initially in 2nd floor but we subsequently brought it to the 3rd floor. either 2nd or 3rd floor it was working smoothly.

the 2wire modem does not have very good wireless coverage, not exactly the fault of singnet / modem, but rather the distance and number of walls in between ur pc and modem. you can either try moving the modem to a more strategic place, or move your pc to a better place. Wireless does not mean there is no limit to where you can connect (otherwise u can connect to the modem from m'sia right?). if not buy a modem router with a long range, or run an ethernet cable from modem to ur room loh.

yes yes i have the problem also. the 2wire modem wireless coverage is not very good.
what can i do to boost the signal coverage?? really need to buy a booster? But i see no antenna connector behind the 2wire leh, what to do? Is there another type of booster?

try this. go to http://192.168.1.254/mdc, password is "2wire" if there is.
than go to Wireless, under power setting, set it to the max.

Do you have network cabling in your house already? If yes, use back the old router as an additional AP and position it at another location.

hey to all.
chunliang, i've tried the link u gave me but my wireless power settings already set to the maximum.
Francis87, does network cabling mean like the i have wires inside the walls that allow me to connect to SCV cable tv kinda cable? if yes then i do have. if not then i think i sounded stupid. how do i connect my Mio modem to a DIR 655 (whats this btw, booster?)?
so its possible to use back my linksys router? from what i gathered, the Mio modem acts as a router as well and if i can connect it to my linksys and configure to use my linksys as my router(provided its possible?) and then i would have like 2 routers? is that right and do-able?
one other way that i heard is to buy a linksys modem and router (all in one). i'm still not sure how the booster thing works though. if it could help then i'd just buy it as the past week has been disastrous and i cant do my stuff online properly as my connection is worse than my dial up 10 years ago.

since u hav a linksys router. u can try to bridge tat 2wire modem(mayb u wan to do a search on how to bridge), than configure the linksys router n connect up.

No, getting another router is not required.

if we bridge the 2wire router...let's say if anything goes wrong during configuration...can we reset the settings back to default?

One sure work solution is to get SingTel to extend the phoneline to your 3rd floor or near to your work area. In this way, you can continue to use the 2wire modem without having to resort to booster solution which may have inconsistent result.

why don't TS run phoneline (and 2wire router) to 3rd floor ?
solve every thing

He will have to pay extra money. Besides, running the telephone wire up to 3rd floor from 2nd floor might make the house look ugly depending on house interior design. The fact of the problem is that Singtel's MIO modem/router is crap for wireless usage.

Using a pair of hands, a pair of eyes and a brain (important criteria).
Looking at your post, either you lack the last criteria, or your last criteria is very weak (especially if it's a 7-year-old kid).
