I'm still in shock!
5 mins ago everyone knew there was a super heavy rain and lightning storm... I was using my internet connection through a 2wire modem from Singnet as usual.
Suddenly there was a very loud lightning strike and at the same moment my modem had a big "pop" sound together with very bright electric spark on top, then stopped working immediately. I unplugged everything right away for safety.
Now that if I plug the power cable to the modem again, it can still be on but all lights are red and no blinking anymore.
The questions are: Has the same thing happened to anyone here before? :(( Will I get a free exchange to a new one by Singnet or I have to pay 100% for it? Anything I should do to prevent this to happen again? Please help!

No use moving away from window. The surge is in the electrical outlet. Protect it with a surge protector

Surge can come thru the power or telephone lines. Generally, it's very safe in sg as cables are run underground instead of overhead. However, there are still some landed estates with overhead cables.
Protecting power point from surge is quite easy. There are extension that come with surge protector.
Telephone line surge protectors are also available in the market.

Well, I think my singnet modem almost got fried as past few days ago there was a heavy storm when a bolt of thunder struck and it was very near the vicinity of my block as it was very loud. For a moment, my downloads stopped but resumed after a few mins. Must be my good old belkin surge arrestor and UPS w/phone line surge protector doing its job. :D

UPS does provide surge protection. It's just depending on what kind of UPS (cheapo ones and low end models dun expect too much from it loh) and what's the surge level of protection.

If it's still under warranty then just go RMA. Do not tell them that it is has been struck by lightning, since even insurance don't cover such event, which is termed " act of god".

OK guys here is the solution for anyone having the same case:
Calling Singnet will not solve anything since they are not in charge of modem stuff. They will redirect you to:
76 Playfair Road, #06-03
LHK2 Building
Singapore 367996
Bring your modem + power adapter there, fill up the form outside then bring in to exchange for a new one. They did it very fast without any hassle.
Hope it helps someone.
