Blog: Lucky Liverpool
I saw Steven Gerrard on television earlier this week, saying Liverpool's players need to learn how to cope with the pressure of being top of the league.
I don't know why it's an issue: I can't see them staying top much longer.
In my opinion, the two best teams in England are still United and Chelsea. I know Chelsea have stumbled a little at home in recent weeks but that’s not a long-term problem. They'll overcome that soon enough. Arsenal are very fragile and there's unrest in their camp, while Liverpool simply don’t have the quality required to win the league.
People in Liverpool will accuse me of being biased, but that’s an honest assessment of where they’re at. They’ve not got a strong enough squad to ensure they're still competing for honours at the end of the season.
I know Liverpool are top of the league at the moment, six points ahead of United (although we have a game in hand), but there’s no denying they've had a great deal of luck. Since the season started they’ve got every possible break.
That happens in football: some teams get all the luck and others can’t seem to catch a break. I don’t think United have had too many breaks recently. For instance, I thought Cristiano Ronaldo was incredibly unlucky to be sent off at Manchester City last weekend.
Anyway, you usually find these things even themselves out by the end of the season. And that's why I'll be surprised if Liverpool are still in the title race come April or May. When the luck runs out, their shortcomings will be exposed.
