View Full Version : All you need to know thread about Japanese Handphones Softbank & NTT Docomo
Since many people asking the same questions on the forum, I will do a guide and introduction to Japanese Handphones
NTT Docomo & Softbank are telecom in the land of the rising sun, Japan. Softbank brought over JP Vodafone in 2006, thus some of the older Japanese Handphones were labelled Vodafone.

What is Hypersim?
Hypersim is a thin film shaped like your simcard with a chip . You paste it onto your simcard and insert into your phone to enable you to use the Japanese handphones.
How Does Hypersim works?
The Hypersim act as a bypass, allowing your simcard to be recongised by the phone. Thus enabling you to use your simcard on the Japanese handphone.
What is Signal Out Issues?
When the signal bar says 圈外, or OUT. It means your Japanese handphone lost the "key" to connect to the signal tower. This happens when you move around and try to connect to another Signal Tower.
How to regain signal and have a longer lasting signal?
The Holy CPR Steps
Put your simcard into a local phone. Preferred choice is Sony Ericsson or Samsung. Do not use Nokia or LG. Unless you want to frequently do the CPR
Set your local phone to GSM ONLY (NOT 3G/GSM)
Make a phone call to ensure that the signal is not fake
Switch off your hp and place the simcard with the hypersim back to your Japanese handphone
ALWAYS ensure your Japanese handphone is set to GSM ONLY (NOT 3G/GSM)
You should have back your signal. Please note that for stable signal connection, you should see GPRS on NTT Docomo and GSM on Softbank
If still no signal, try putting your simcard with hypersim into local hp and repeat the steps from 1 to 4
If you realised that your Japanese handphones says This UIM is not recongised. Chances are either the hypersim not compatitable, or the hypersim may be damanged.
FAQ on Japanese handphones
Where can I buy Japanese handphones?
You may go under HWZ forum -http://forums.hardwarezone.com.sg/forumdisplay.php?f=201
Common search term to use "Docomo" or "Softbank"
Our pricing here is much better than shops.
Does Japanese handphones have warranty here?
Nearly all Japanese handphones exported overseas DO NOT have warranty as it is usually contract cancelled phones. And in Japan, contract cancelled phones DO NOT have warranty. You may check with your seller whether they have the connection to help you send it back to Japan for repair.
What is the price range for Japanese handphones?
For lower end models, price is around $400++, higher end models around $800++. Prices varies due to currency exchange rate and whether it is a newly released handphones. Usually, newly release models have much higher price and will usually stablise after 2 to 3 weeks after its released date.
FAQ on Hypersim / Hypercard and network issues
Why We Have Signal drop (CPR) ISSUE? What causes it?
For Softbank models, those made before 920SH is fully unlocked, meaning no need to use TMSI to unlock thus no CPR needed
BUT, 923SH need to use TMSI to unlock, thus at times you are unable to connect to next signal tower when you move around.
The unlocking for 920SH and 923SH is different. (923SH need to use TMSI, same goes for NTT Docomo 905i, 906i and 01A, 02A, 03A, 04A Series)
For those interested to read up on TMSI http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mobility_management
My Japanese handphone suddenly lost signa, it says 圈外, or OUT. What should I do?

Does Singapore three telecom Singtel, M1, Starhub work with Hypersim?
Yes. All three telecom simcards work with hypersim. If it does not work, it means the seller hypersim is not compatitble with your simcard.

Something need to be noted..
Actually 923sh can log in 3G network, using short 3G video call( example 5-10 min video call). By the way, my hypersim is not the latest de, still the one locked to one number only..
Hope u all understand. dun say how come mine cannot work like ur!! Always remember dun use too long on 3G video call, it prevent CPR thing happens. I have try this method more than 10 tries, quite useful.
My Conditions set to use a short 3G video call
- Not a network blind area (try not do it in underground, overseas, heavily buildings area).
- Assume that area easily catch strong reception of 3G and GSM.
- once u switch to 3G network, provide ur 923sh catch 3G signal. simply make a short video call. Finally u can see ur buddy face in nice video quality call!!
-once u finish ur short video call, quickly switch to GSM network n wait ur 923sh catch GSM signal.
-Once 923sh can catch GSM signal, meant u r in anti -cpr safe zone. :s12:
-
Everyone is able to make out going 3G call with 923SH and any other models after 920SH or Docomo series, but you cannot recieve call/sms under 3G network. Thus we need to use GSM network.

Ar bro? copy from sim card to phone memory and edit reading field? After that can either sort by reading field or search your contacts via reading field.

kuro, you said "All NTT Docomo handphones are unable to log in to 3G Network"
does that means that if i were to bring this in japan, it wont work (under 3G?)
can log into SG 3G network, just that you cannot recieve call or sms under 3G network

Sms does work correctly when u're roaming in Japan with Docomo models, however for 3G u won't be able to receive incoming voicecalls/videocalls on it while in Japan, outgoing works though. Similarly for local usage as well under 3G networks, as this seems to be a limitation when it comes to unlocked Docomo phones here locally, hasn't been resolved since the 905i days.

Sms does work for both incoming and outgoing, it's only the incoming voicecalls and videocalls not working under 3G network mode that's all.

bro, not true. not all models or telecom can accept incoming sms under 3G network. but i never go figure out which are the models or telecom ^^" too many to test

Well SMS recieving with 3G works in CANADA. I'm not sure about video call, but on some sim cards its supposed to work incoming and out. But MOST of the time you cna't recieve SMS or videocall with 3G

it will work. just do "CPR", instead of setting your local + japanese hp to GSM only. Set to 3G Only

you can buy a used set, just that you got to pay a fee to unlock the set to YOUR sim card...
ipwnj00

You can only make calls and sms when you have got the used set provided it comes with a hypersim. Multimedia functions on softbank phones are locked and if you really do need it, you have to get it unlocked =)

you can roam in japan, using sg simcard.
you'll not be able to buy a japan simcard, cos we are aliens. unless u know someone there and register under their name.
hmm... i vote we make this thread sticky. kuro or moderator can keep the first page updated as and when there are Q&A, or new models being release.
haha aliens =p but im considering doing exchange there so if i do go over, i'll get a line myself, jus wondering if its gg to work else i gotta pay a few more hundred bucks to get ANOTHER phone which is kind of ridiculous. hmmm...

Stability is subjective. You have to get a perfect combination with the hypersim and your sim card to achieve good stability. But i believe with the hypersims nowadays. I think stability isn't really too much of an issue. But you still have to be aware on how CPR works.
If you're sick of restrictions, don't get a softbank phone. Get the NTT DoCoMo ones which doesn't have the issue of multimedia getting locked.
+65? no chance. Nowadays you have to add both "+65" and without "+65" to an individual contact.
English menu confirm have la ... no worries

If this is really one of ur utmost requirement for purchasing a phone, I would suggest u to steer clear of japanese exotics under those NTT Docomo/Softbank brands. This is because nowadays all latest japanese keitais all are only able to type 160chars maximum per sms, if u wish to type longer than that you will have to save to draft and compose another new one, aka truncated sms in a way. Personally I'm actually already used to this very much since i started using japanese phones since way back a long time, but for new users like you I would personally say either u live with it, or u steer damn clear off it to save your messenging hassles.
For the rest of ur questions, I believe ipwnj00 bro has explained it to you well enough, so I won't touch on those again. Bottomline from me to you, if you need multimedia-unlocked phones out of the box, avoid Softbank at all costs, since they are locked to 1 simcard as well and whenever you change simcard num or owner, it's a bitch to have to look for your unlocker again to unlock it for you properly. Hypersim stability is no longer an issue anymore nowadays with the latest NTT Docomo/Softbank models, it's more abt getting a good pairing combination with the hypersim u're using with your own simcard variant.
Cheers.

In most cases, please make sure you align the hypersim with your sim card properly before insertion into your SH906i.
If there isn't any signal displayed, please redo the whole CPR process again by just putting ur sim card into any of the local phones that you own. Turn it on and regain the signal back before you recombine it with the hypersim and then insert into the SH906i.
Try it!

Hi, I just recently bought a 903SH which I think have HK-firmware. Would like to change to Japanese firmware, just don't know how.
One way seem to be http://iunlock.com/shop/product_info.php?products_id=611 also, the seller on ebay offered me to help me get in touch with someone in hong kong to maybe help me.
Doesn't matter to me if I send the phone to Asia or America (I live in Sweden, so im kinda in the middle) But, the price on the website (iunlock.com) is $30.00 (without taxes and shipping i think..) but still, seems ok to me.
If you guys could maybe recommend the cheapest, best? way to change firmware i would be very happy
I guess its not possible for me to do it at home, with just a USB-cabel?
And one more thing... if i change firmware i dont have to unlock it again according to iunlock.com, is this true??
Thanks,
Marcus

I'm curious do most phones have ability to play music or sound from the external speaker? Or is it just for making speaker phone phone call only?

Hello everyone,
I'm completely new to Japanese cell phones, and I was wondering about a specific handset which was not mentioned in the FAQ list of unlocked phones. Or at least, I didn't see it.
The handset I'm refering to is the Softbank Sharp 811SH. I've been looking at it, and I'm thinking of importing one.
I was wondering about it's unlocking method. I've seen some 811SH sets on Ebay, and they're unlocked with a hypersim right?
But are they multimedia locked or not? And what exactly does it mean when a phone is multimedia locked?
(Multimedia isn't that important to me, I usually only make calls and send SMS messages with a cell)
Is the 811SH troubled by the CPR issue mentioned around here?
I saw that it was mentioned that all Softbank phones released after the 920SH have the issues, but don't really know where or how to find when they're released.
Being unlocked, does it mean it accepts absolutely ever sim card? Or are there some restrictions in place?
In case it's needed, I live in Belgium, so I have no idea if sim cards in my country are supported.
And one last question I have:
When a phone is unlocked, either software unlocked or Hypersim unlocked, does it keep it's ability for Japanese input? Or is it removed/disabled?
I hope someone is willing to answer my questions.
And I hope this is the correct place to ask these questions.
Thank you in advance,
Vullcan

If its multimedia locked you usually cant do things like use the multimedia features of the phone, such as the camera, play videos, music etc
As long as you have the correct hypersim for your phone, CPR issue is usually a result of your network provider and the cell towers that are supplying your phone with a signal. If you lose your signal from the cell tower because of poor coverage in the area that you happen to be in, there is a chance you will have to preform CPR.
As far as I know the hypercards will accept any simcard, often you will have to physically cut your simcard to get it to fit onto the hypersim. The hypersim that you attach your simcard to also know as the "simhack" is what unlocks your phone for usage outside of Japan.
You will not lose the ability of Japanese input. The hypersim unlocking of the phone does not modify the phone, it just enables you to use it in your country on your cell providers network.
I hope you have read about the limitations your phone will still have in Belgium, because certain features only work on Japans cell network and will not work anywhere else in the world
For the 811SH I saw someone using I-smartphone 2008 Hypersim to multimedia unlock it and they said it worked fine for sending sms, making calls, and using basic multimedia functions.

811sh probably wont have cpr issues, probably the same stability as a 904sh/920sh, but features wise, better off with a 904sh, same size LCD, better camera, and no multimedia lock. Just the thickness

Yes, I know about the restrictions which are in place for using features like GPS, TV, GPRS and 3G. That's okay. I'm only really interested in being able to make calls and send SMS messages. (And Japanese input of course. It's a must)
It would be a nice addition to have the Multimedia working though.
For the 811SH I saw someone using I-smartphone 2008 Hypersim to multimedia unlock it and they said it worked fine for sending sms, making calls, and using basic multimedia functions.
I've been looking around for this and have indeed found some information about multimedia for the 811SH being unlockable with an I-smartphone sim. But it seems that there are multiple types of I-smartphone sims. Do you or anyone else have an idea as to which one is the right one? Their website doesn't make too much sense to me. (Forgive me for the constant questions)
Edit:
Another question. I was looking at the 921T as well, and it's software unlocked. Does this mean there's another software version installed on the set? And does a software unlocked phone still keep it's ability for Japanese input as well?
I also saw it being advertised as a 3G only phone. And since most Japanese cells don't support 3G outside of Japan, does this mean the 921T is unusable outside of Japan?

I'd order the latest simhack you can find with hopes that whatever they got working in their previous cards would be incorporated into the latest version.
I'm pretty sure no unlocks will ever remove features of the phone such as japanese typing. Updating firmware on the phone to a non japanese firmware is something that could cause you to lose a feature such as that.
Lots of phones with the latest simhacks will work in 3G mode if your cell network is compatible but since probelms do arise it is important to have GSM avaiable to fall back on, unless you have a ton of money to throw around and can buy multiple phones to test out what works best in your country.

Hi Cubester,
i own a japanese set 921T, it is software unlocked thou...and it can use all the functions, except mms, gprs and tv.
the same looks alike 911T for the menu and everything, so i guess it is not installed additional software to unlock it...
a nice phone, and you should try this one :)

Thanks again for answering all of my questions everyone.
I have one last question to ask. (At least, I hope it's the last one)
I'm really considering buying the 921T at the moment. But it's 3G only.
So, provided there's 3G coverage, and I have a 3G compatible sim card. Will I be able to use the 921T where I live? (I mean for making and receiving calls and sending and receiving SMS messages.)
I just thought I'd ask this to make sure. I wouldn't want to spend a lot of money on a phone which is not usable.
Thanks everyone for sticking with me :)

To be honest you might get stuck being able to make calls but having trouble receiving calls / text. Its best to make your FIRST keitai something that has GSM to fall back on and then you will know if your area supports 3G recieve and sending for future keitai purchases.

But wouldn't that depend somewhat on the phone itself? I mean, from what I've read, some phones are a bit more stable when it comes to receiving calls and sms messages in 3G mode than others, right?
So if that's the case, it could be possible that one phone is able to use 3G and the other isn't. So you wouldn't be able to tell wether or not your local network is going to support calls and sms for every 3G phone. Or am I mistaken?
Thanks again for being patient with me :)

So if 5 people says yes it works and 2 people say it doesnt work for them... then you end up being one of the people it doesnt work for, you are going to feel pretty bad! I guess you could always try to sell the phone for less than you bought it for and then buy one that does work for you.
Up to you if you want to take the chance really, just be prepared to lose some money if things dont work out.

Yes, I see your point. I also read about the fact that the 921T isn't enabled for roaming, which might cause trouble for me as well. (I tend to move around quite a bit between countries.)
It's probably better to look around for another phone.
I'm currently looking at the DoCoMo 906i series, but I'm not so sure which one yet.
In any case, thank you for answering all of my questions, it's been very helpful to me. :)

By roaming, I mean going to another country than the one where you bought the sim card, and making a call from there.
I've read that the phone isn't roaming enabled, so that would mean that when I go to another country I would have to use a local sim card, otherwise I wouldn't be able to make calls. (Or at least, that's the way I understand it)
And you say that your 921T sometimes doesn't use 3G? I thought it was a 3G only phone.
Normally it wouldn't be able to find any network other than a 3G one, right?

http://mb.softbank.jp/mb/en/global_service/roaming/
There's been some conflicting mix of information been provided on this thread here, in rgds to the roaming issue for 921T. Let me try to clarify things here since I used to be an ex-911T user and have been following the developments of Toshiba's top of the line flag-ship range of domestic phone models specifically under Softbank, especially those 9XX high-end series. (including their very popular 814T/815T low-end series back in Japan with the females)
As provided in the URL link above, you can click on the button that says For other compatible models click here, which will actually show u a chart that tells u which Softbank models support Global-Roaming and which doesn't. It's very obvious as shown in the chart that models such as 911T/912T/920T/921T do not support Global-Roaming, so yes they do not support roaming features actually out of the box. The reason why you have been reading abt some conflicting information on why certain models such as 911T or 921T can work in Japan, is because of the way how they are been unlocked via software programming method, and theortically Softbank actually runs on WCDMA 2100/UMTS 2100 standard for their native 3G networks over there, which is why when you bring the above-mentioned phones to Japan, with ur own 3G-enabled telco operator's simcard (for example, Singtel/M1/Starhub 3G simcards in question here), they can actually log-on onto the native Softbank 3G network there, and do roaming in Japan.
However, this unique 'roaming' feature is where it ends up specifically working in Japan only that's all, there's alrdy been numerous reports by fellow forumners in rgds to 911T as well as the 920T which I know from this forum, that feedbacked that the roaming does not work at all once they are in the different locations, say US, China, Thailand or even Malaysia. In short, due to the hard-coding on the Toshiba phone models, there's actually no way to enter manually into the phone's network options selector (there's in fact none) and force them to detect a country's network when u're there, where usually you would select a network upon arriving at your roaming destination country, on a typical roaming-enabled 3G phone.
For Japan it's a whole different case though, cos Softbank is actually located in Japan and these phones are theortically made and meant only for domestic usage in Japan only. Even then, whenever u're roaming in Japan, u would noticed the above-mentioned Toshiba phone models would log-on only to the native Softbank 3G networks, they won't switch to NTT Docomo automatically as per normally like any other 3G phone roaming properly in Japan when you encounter low signal/no signal when u're there, with the help of your local operator roaming agreements with said overseas operators due to the above reasons like I had explained earlier on.
So my personal suggestions for you, if roaming is one of your no.1 priorities included for consideration for a new keitai phone purchase, I would strongly urge you to avoid the Softbank Toshiba series at all costs. Sorry for the long explanation there just thought I will clarify abit here. ^ ^
my parents always call me from indonesia, and everything was fine... so its roaming rite?

First case above in the quoted msg, this is not considered roaming. It's normal yr parents would be able to call you from Indonesia, in fact any tom dick or harry can call you from Indonesia, as long as they know your mobile no. here in Singapore, you don't even need to have auto-roaming subscribed via your own telco operator to receive nuisance calls from overseas callers, just to list as an example. So receiving incoming calls from overseas is not considered roaming at all, in fact depending on your own local telco's agreements with said overseas operator, incoming overseas call may even be free depending on their roaming agreements. (I do know for Singtel users, incoming calls from Japan is free actually, same for videocalls from Japan as well, not sure abt other telcos since I'm a ST user myself)
For your 2nd case in the above quoted msg, the reason why sometimes the reception signal bar disappears from the stand-by screen, is because you've encountered no reception avail at the location u're in actually. :s13: This is common for certain underground MRT train stations here as well as some underground carpark areas/blind spots based on yr telco you're on. But yeah the above does happen occasionally as well previously on my 911T, so don't worry you're not alone on this.
Cheers.

But thank you for explaining all that with such amounts of detail. I appreciate it.
Roaming is indeed an important feature for my phone since I tend to be in other countries quite often.
So now I'm looking at either the P906i or the F-01A, with the F-01A having won my interest a bit more than the P906i. I'll be sure to post in their respective threads when I get one. :)

Yes, I'm aware of the CPR issues with the DoCoMo phones, but I've read about the newer anti-CPR hypersims, so I hope CPR won't be as frequent as it used to be.
But in any case, I still have my ancient K800i to do CPR with when needed. :)

Not planning to bring the Jap Phone (923sh) over due to the roaming issues.
Thus, If I take out the simcard to use on a normal phone.
Will the Jap phone get media lock back after 1 week?

Do I need to separate the battery from the jap phone?

Hi!
I'm a newbie to japanese phones, but i really love the japanese keitais and am interested in getting one! they all have very lovely designs!
I just have a few questions regarding the japanese phones though:-
1) I've read online that the phones are limited to 160 characters per sms, anything more than tt, the msg won't go through the network. For sms coming inwards, it is the same case. Can i find out if this is still the case for the newer models in winter2009 and spring 2009?
2) Some phones are 3G enabled, does that mean we can go online and surf websites with them?
3) Saw that there are some phones which are software unlocked and media unlocked.. may i know what functions will be available for media unlocked?
Thank you so much!!

u should use the search here not google.
someone did mention it before already. but just to let u know again. in recent phones when people sms you of characters more than 160, it breaks into few messages. so u would receive 2 or more messages. on the other hand when u send msgs out, max is 160 nth more and you would have to type another message to continue.

I can vouch for luloos that there's no problem with F-01B and long SMSes. :s13: M1 keeps sending me promotional SMSes at least 3msges long.

yes it's confirmed that keitai from panasonic and SE does not allow the user to receive sms'es more than 160 chars. Previously tested with the SO905i, P905i, P906i ... all cannot receive but any other functions are fine. If you have a bunch of friends who doesn't sms lengthy messages then i think it is fine to either own the panasonic or SE keitais. Else try the other brands.

Poor reception depends on how strong the GSM network of your own telco provider is. However, the need for CPR due to low/no reception has decreased significantly due to anti-CPR hypersims.

An anti-CPR hypersim is still a hypersim, so yes, it will work on any phones with the right programming.
You can get it from the sellers at the Mobile Bazaar section. No idea about whether its best to get from Hong Kong rather than Singapore, but I read somewhere that they can charge very excessively if you don't talk like a local.

There's a Taiwan Sharp thread here (http://forums.hardwarezone.com.sg/showthread.php?t=2609591). You may ask the threadstarter if it supports T9. I'm not sure about China/Taiwan Sharps since I don't buy them. But the prices are significantly higher than hypersim unlock phones, due to it being factory unlock.

I found it cheaper to buy my phones from Japan. It worked out to about $500AUD as opposed to the asking price of upwards of $700AUD some were asking for.

Sorry this might have been asked before but I re-read the whole of this thread and couldn't find the answer.
If I buy a Docomo phone IN Japan on a prepaid line/ 2nd hand set, can I bring it back to Singapore to use?
I will need to get a hypersim and get someone to unlock the phone for me right?
Are there anybody in Singapore who can unlock the phone?
I want to use the phone for sms/ calls and camera.
Thanks!

Yes, but the phone must support GSM mode. Some models are 3G only, so you need to be careful on this aspect. Go here (http://forums.hardwarezone.com.sg/forumdisplay.php?f=201) and search for "NTT". There are a couple of guys there selling hypersims/hypercards.

May I know what handset you are using? Because if it's from NTT DoCoMo, you can just remove the SIM and just use the phone without the SIM inside. From there, you can access to all your media files.

You got the working hypersim with you now? If yes then you can find bennyhk and pay a small media unlocking fee then you can delete your pictures lor. If not you can ask him if he could do anything to help. But of course I think everything will come with a small fee. haha
