Real Madrid are considering trying to tempt Portsmouth into parting with Lassana Diarra as they look for a replacement for his namesake Mahamadou, who has been ruled out for the rest of the season.
The Spanish giants are keen to dip into the transfer market again in January and bolster their midfield having lost two players for the remainder of the campaign.
As well as Mahamadou Diarra, Madrid have also been told that Rubén De la Red will not play again this term and that has made signing a new player a priority, according to AS.
Didier Zokora was reported to be a target in the British press given Juande Ramos' knowledge of the player and it was thought that Tottenham would then move for Lassana Diarra.
But AS believe that Los Merengues will instead move for the former Chelsea and Arsenal defensive midfielder themselves with a bid lined up in the next few days.
Lassana Diarra is seen in some quarters at the Bernabéu as the player that the club should sign to bring back the stability that Claude Makélélé gave the team.
Many felt that selling Makélélé in 2000 was a mistake that Madrid never really compensated for and that they have missed a player of his ilk ever since.
Portsmouth would demand a huge fee for their 23-year-old midfielder, who stated upon joining the club that he would not be staying should one of Europe's major sides make a move for him.
