You can try the Canon TX1, HD720P Video, 10x optical zoom, 7.1 megapixels still photo and most importantly, cheap! $599 (experimental model, discontinued already but still some stocks in shops)
Very good video quality that is indistinguishable from HD1080i, even on my full hd display.

Sanyo HD1010, HD1000 and CA8 are very good.
HD 1000 1010 need steady hand as the high resolution makes video quite jiggy with slight hand move..
also the px for the 1010 is near sgd1000
if for $500, try the lower range Sanyo Xacti.. but thier Gun type ones hv short batt life (1 hr)
CA8 not HD .. try get at least a 720P .. like HD800 or the recently replaced model.. but the new replaced model wont be as cheap.. HD800 can get ard SGD500 from overseas website.. add $60 more for SD card and additional Batt and u are all set for a cheap but great 720P video production

price is not much different between HD800 and HD1010, i'll recommend jump to the HD1010
ya get 1010.. but the new one.. HD2000 is something like that is out.. so 1010 got replaced
dont forget u need quite high end PC to edit 1080P videos smoothly..

but it probably will take 4 - 6 months to drop the price.
Right now, the price of the HD1010 is very attractive!
HD1010 i think is one of the cheapest 1080P videocam.. the low light shooting also very good .. how much is it now USD600ish i hear from HK?
i cant go 1080P.. my PC cannot handle it.. so only can use 720P unless u upgrade PC.. :(

Price is actually lower than $600! The HD800 is very good value too.
Sanyo VPC-HD1010 - $479 (http://www.warehouse123.com/ProductInfo.php?pid=SANVPCHD1010-BLK)
Sanyo VPC-HD800 - $344 (https://www.warehouse123.com/ProductInfo.php?pid=SANVPCHD800-BLK)
For such low price, I'll not wait for the new model release.

depands on each person if ur on budget, the HD800 will be good.. (but the lens angle is quite narrow) ..
HD1010 is much better value i say.. but size wise and if 720P satisfied ur need the HD800 is great.
but i think its worth saying again the xacti non optical "steady shot" lose out to others.. so u need a very steady hand in order not to jerk the video a lot..
anyway those got more $$$ can chk out their latest xacti range for 2009 .. no idea price yet

also, you need to know HD800 will not come with docking station and remote control. I believe the HD1010 is actually better on value.

well i agree..
but before those who want to buy 1010 need to realized that 1010 is much bigger.. and the 1080P video need a quite up to date PC+Gfx card to edit or even playback.. but given now, i will upgrade my PC and get 1010 since the px so little different.
HD700 has a docking station and remote,, HD800 dont hv??? geez.. so much for a upgrade..
but seriously.. the docking and remote I never ever use.. unless u want to plug into ur TV and playback .. but i always transfer to PC, snitch up all the files... then convert to DIVX.. and use my WDTV to play back..

I can see the price tag of HD800 is actually lower! New CG model is HD too so they will be a good choice if you want to go compact! Btw, have someone got the the Sanyo Xacti VPC-TH1 already?
