It's not your normal USB A Male to USB A Male cable.
The Easy Transfer cable may make things easier, but if you don't have, try the following.
You won't need any special programs to transfer your files.
Are your computers connected to a router?
If they are, go on your old laptop, move all your old files to a folder. Let's call this folder "Old Files".
Right click the "Old Files" folder, and click "Sharing and Security...".
From there you can make your folder opened for access, but only for those who are connected to your router.
Once you are done, on your old laptop go to Start > Run and type ipconfig.
Check your IP address. For example it is 192.168.1.100.
Go onto your new laptop, and open up Windows Explorer. Type (for example) \\192.168.1.1\Old Files. The "Old Files" is the name of the folder which we dumped in all your old files.

Base on the bolded words, i take it as both are connected to a router, please correct me if i'm wrong.

It's works just like direct cable connection but come with driver and application for "easy files transfering", i don't see it as easy though.:D
Since both are connected to a router, simply righclick on the C: drive (old system) and select "sharing and securities", ignore the warning about sharing the root of the drive, proceed to complete the files and printer sharing. If the laptop is using Vista, create a folder on the desktop and share it too, if laptop is using WinXP, share the entire drive just like the old system.
After both system completed "files and printer sharing", go to "My Network Place" to access each other, you should be able to see each other and start transfering file.
If you can't see each other, disable whatever 3rd party software firewall, internet security or antivirus integrated with firewall for the time being, although you can try to configure the firewall to allow access both both systemm, but i don't advie you to do that if you are not familar with firewall setting and network IP/address. If you installed Norton Goback, disable it as well, with goback running in the background, you can't see the system installed with goback from another system.
Once you done with files transfering, remove the sharing of the entire drive for security reasons and start up the firewall again.

The folder will not be displayed under My Networks Place (name changed on Vista) if both computers belong to different workgroups.

Thks for your advice. That is what I have done except that I never go to 3rd party software firewall to disable, but I did go to control panel>firewall > and off it. Both computer belong to same workgroup but they don't shown each other in the network. With the same setting and procedure, I can easily set the network for 2 pc using xp but not for vista. WIll try again if free.
Thks again.

Please read the last reply in this thread:

It's preferable/easier to be in the same work group if the user is not able to get them to work with different work groups, but it's not "must be" scenario.:)

In fact most 3rd party software firewall will disable the Windows Firewall once install, if you are able to see both systems in My Network Place but XP system cannot access the Vista system, you can disable the password access option(default option) in the Vista if you have no idea how to setup the password access.
