I am getting a wireless router today. Budget: $200.

There will be at maximum about 5 computers using the Max Online connection at once.
2 Wireless.
3 Desktop.
Almost all would be only engaging in internet browsing.

WRT54G is lagging badly for this. Sometimes some computer cant even refresh the particular webpage but another computer could. Could it be the router problem or could it be the computer's problem?

Please help me.

If most of them downloading pirated content or using Internet streams or downloads with maximum bandwidth possible, no router will help in that :P

Hello, thanks for the quick replies.

All the computers are not on BitTorrent. No downloadings for every computer when peak at 5 users. All only engaging in web browsing.

My WRT54G version is 5 and Max Online plan is Maxonline Premium.

U might want to install DD-WRT micro edition on your WRT54G version 5 for better stability.

As for the lags in webpage browsing, although as u said some computer could browse and other computer could not browse, this seems to be the fault of the StarHub network during peak periods at nite, as is reported by many StarHub users these past few months.

Where can I get DD-WRT micro edition? Would upgrading to another router be a solution too? Yeah at night, one com could auto refresh successfully and without any failure. But the other always refresh half way and stop. Then everything just starts to lag from there.

I was on WRT54 with 5 laptops and 5 digital cable tv set tops. It worked fine. If you're wondering how cable tv is in the picture, it actually is. my internet was **** but the starhub technician came to attach my MOL cable to a direct connection to the original source. (it's in some box in my house). It used to be like at the lowest priority behind alot of splitters cos of the tv and stuff.

at least according to the technician, the modem is fighting for reception with alot of other things. so he bypassed all the splitters. now my internet is good. like it should be. never been better. previous tests on speedtest and starhub utilities gave below 1000kbps. after the bypass it's back to 12-20mbps. Im on MOL premium. But i got the DIR 655 router cos i spilled coffee on my WRT54

:D

Thats weird. My router is directly beside the cable point, no splitter and stuff. Connecting directly to it. Must be my area. I was thinking of getting Linksys or Dlink DIR 615/655. Couldnt make up my mind yet tho.

I don't mean that cable point....It's the actual cable box thats connected to the main line from under the road infrastructure. Anyway, I'm a landed homeowner, so I have this box; not sure about other types of houses; but yeah its a cable box somewhere in my hse. :s7:

For HDB apartments that "box" you have described should be outside the apartments. It's a white box with "SCV" engraved.

Should be that then.
