Hi Brudders,

Need your advise on this. Currently im using singnet 2wire wireless modem. Right now is placed on the 3rd level whereby a desktop is stationed. My dad and 2 other brudders are using a laptop which they require access to the net on each level of the house.
Wireless Signal on the 2nd level is rather weak.

Im intending to buy a new wireless router, to replace my current 1. and place a wireless homplug on the 1st level to extend the network. Will this work for having signal to be received reasonably well throughout the house ?

Or any brudders has got suggestions or solutions ? Thanks for your help ! :(:D

why not put the 2wire on the 2nd floor?

it should then provide coverage for the level 3 and 1, even though it may be "rather weak"

another alternative would to to get an access point instead of a router, place it on level 1 and connected by the homeplug to the 2wire.

that way, level 3 has 2wire, level 1 has access point, and level 2 has coverage from both?

what you need is WDS if you dont want create from scrach a wired backbone for the house.

place two WDS enabled access points (AP) (or routers working in AP mode) at the other two storeys

one problem with this implementation is that the speed is halved at every node.

and then if the coverage is already bad at level 2, the speed may be affected even further.

But then, that is a solution if no wiring is allowed.

Or that the homeplugs are not an option.

homeplug means there's already a wired backbone. ?

homeplug means there's already a wired backbone. ?

home plug runs on the power cables that you already have at home.

as long as all the points terminate at the same ELCB, you can use the home plug to share your internet access via the current power line infrastructure.

Home plugs form a form of "backbone" via the eletrical lines in a home.

The only problem is that these home plugs for optimised speed, is best used at the power point itself and not on power strip/extensions.

200Mbps homeplugs are not cheap either - amounting to about $100 odd for 1. 200Mbps speeds are still not guaranteed.

2Wire does not do WDS.

Hi Brudders,

Apologize that i did not make myself clear.

Currently the 2wire network modem is down. Intend to purchase a new 1, whereby i can have more options to create a better wireless network in my house.

Is there any brands or models which is good. How do i create a extra access point as per mentioned ? Sorry, kinda noob, just know some basic networking only. Thanks!

Basically, a cheap modem - AM300 Linksys

Router wise, you can go with the Dlink DIR-655. Highly reviewed/praised upon.

Make sure the setup is placed on the 2nd floor, should be good enough.

If you want wired equivalent speeds, better coverage, then i'd suggest you go via the home plug option - getting an AP or another router (maybe WRT54G?) - and turn off DHCP.

Suggest you go with the DIR-655 first. Making sure its at the staircase landing of your 2nd floor can already. From there, i guess its whether you decide to add another AP on your 3rd or 1st storey should the coverage deem insufficient.

Bro,

Get yourself an ADSL Gateway (WAG54G2) (http://www-sg.linksys.com/servlet/Satellite?c=L_Product_C2&childpagename=SG%2FLayout&cid=1175247974594&pagename=Linksys%2FCommon%2FVisitorWrapper&lid=7459485430B01), plus a repeater (WRE54G (http://www-sg.linksys.com/servlet/Satellite?c=L_Product_C2&childpagename=SG%2FLayout&cid=1139845541582&pagename=Linksys%2FCommon%2FVisitorWrapper&lid=4158285430B31)).
That should solve your problem if you are on only wireless G. ;)

seriously speaking, get another 2wire from others selling here, me inclusive. (not trying to promote, but its a pretty good modem/router, and you can buy from others, not only me).

replace it at your current location.

use the home plug, or better still, pull a cable, and connect it to another AP. Place the AP in level 1.

that should provide sufficient coverage for level 1 2 and 3.

Hi brudders,

Thanks for the advise. I have bought DI-524 wireless router, since it was on sale at sgd65 in SLS, and a belkin repeater (Wireless G Universal Range Extender F5D7132 ) as recommanded by the store, it was said to be easy setup. Total damage was 160.

Got my D-link network up and running, but i couldnt figure out the repeater works. Followed the instructions on the manual, since im a virgin on repeater. It suppose to be plug and play, with a autoconnection button. Repeater seems working well, but network is unable to connect initially. So i removed WEP encrytion on d-link network, and got the repeater to connect again, this time it works perfectly well. So i suppose it should be fine.

But who knows, when i relocate the repeater, it doesnt work anymore. Gave up and asked belkin for support, but havent got a reply. Does the repeater works with WEP encrytion on ?

Not a fan of repeater or WDS system but these things work better if both devices are same brand / chip. They will even work for WPA.

hi all,

Managed to get it up from Belkin support. Placed the repeater on the 2nd level. Right now i have full coverage for 2nd and 3rd, as for 1st level, signal received was about 50 - 70 %. Quite satisfied with the result. Thanks for the suggestions and help provided !!
