View Full Version : HELP> PortForwarding on WRT54Gv7 and SBV5121 FAILED.

Hi all,
1) I used to be on SNBB 10M and used 2Wire DSL modem/wifi router (forgotten the model though).
- Port forwarding was done successfully for my torrents, ftp (game server), etc. so basically, all was fine and dandy when I was with Singnet but I wasnt satisfied with the intermitten connection. so....
2) I subscribed the Starhub's bundled 3-in-1 services 2 weeks ago and was given Motorola SBV5121 (VeCM). I also connected WRT54Gv7 (latest firmware) to my home network to make it Wifi-able.
All is well, but I just cant port forward.
Throughout the troubleshooting ordeal,
- I have specified several ports to my uTorrent Client (port 44425, 18122, 17962 etc)
- followed instruction from this link on how to port-forward on linksys. (http://www.portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/Linksys/WRT54G/Utorrent.htm)
- when I tested via http://canyouseeme.org, results were not favorable for all the ports i have specified. Error: Connection timed out.
- router was rebooted on each changes made.
- I have reflashed the firmware of my Linksys router twice. Re-applied the port forward, and still failed.
- I have set the router both DCHP enable and Static IP. Re-applied the port forward, and still failed.
- I enabled DMZ mode for my laptop, still I failed the port test.
I have this impression that the VeCM is causing the issue. So I called Starhub to ask them if they can help make my port forwarding a reality.
ANS: I will escalate to my senior technician and get back to you.
(its already 2days and no news. Maybe I should wait longer, but am interested to see if any hw-zoners can help)
My questions are:
- Does anyone else have similiar setup, with similiar devices, for their home network? If so, any port forwarding issue?
- If there is any, can anyone advice me on what troubleshooting steps that I have missed?
*I hope my troubleshooting log is clear. If not, please feel free to post your queries on what info you need.
Cheers!

uTorrent have its own port checker on the website. you have to ensure port 16000 was used when doing testing. Also, if your uTorrent client shows a green tick at the bottom, then you can ignore previous step and any other thing, it is port forwarded!

please use GRC shield up to check instead https://www.grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2
most of the website checking open port are inaccurate in ip detection due to the the stupid transparent proxy

I also used the uTorrent port checker, and failed miserably everytime.
I am away from my home laptop at the moment, so will only confirm on the green tick later.
And when you mentioned that I have to ensure that port 16000 is used while testing.. meaning on this screen below you want me to put that port# at (Port used for incoming connection), as well on my linksys port-forward router settings?

Thanks for the info. I will try it when i have the chance.
but should I remind you that the uTorrent's port checker also failed me when i have DMZ enabled?

Thanks guys, I managed to get the 'green tick'. Still all port test is saying my port is NOT forwarded. (which is abit strange)
Anyways I tried downloading some torrents. And from the image below, is that normal?
http://i40.tinypic.com/2dj0z86.jpg
what can i do to have a higher download speed?
I am asking because when I was using Singnet, at the amount of seeder/leachers, I was already able to download at a speed of 3-7mB/s average. (I believe this has something to do with me passing the port test at that time)
Now, I have left my download for more than 1 hour and still the speed is the same..
Please tell me I am not over-reacting and that my download speed is pathetic.
Be Gentle.

Your port is forwarded correctly, you may ignore all the port checker sites.

I can't get pass the port checker for uTorrent too, exhausted all options yet still reported as failed port fowarding. Tried all available software firewall configuration including manually open ports in Windows Firewall and ZA, not even disable software firewall did the trick, the same system running Bitcomet and Bitspirit passed without any problem with port forwarding, tried using several Dlink's routers, Netgear and SMC, non can get the port forwarding to works with uTorrent, but all these routers can works seamlessly with Bitcomet and Bitspirit.
Please don't ask me why, i have no answer to this question. I can only says uTorrent doesn't like me.

I checked with utorrent portforward checker and it failed. but when i let my BT run, the icon turns from ! to a green tick.. But the traffic is kinda slow. :s11:

naah. I dont think so Phuque. Those movies and Morrissey album I was downloading got eventually downloaded only after 3 days.(I actually waited sia) and they are good stuffs!
Anyways,
my derivation is, the green tick is there to say that you've got yourself connected successfully.
But hor, on every Torrent Client support site including uTorrent, they ALWAYS mention port forward. because if you forward your port, your uTorrent experience will be OPTIMAL.
So, when you dont have port forwarded, you are NOT OPTIMAL. Meaning, lets say if you download a VERY GOOD SEEDING 'whatevermovie-sample.torrent', out of the available 10000 seeders, you may only get 10 seeders talking to you. Thus your download speed is almost the same like a poo coming out of someone's bung-hole. (Please scroll down several post, to see my screenshot to help visualize the speed, not the poo)
So there you go.
If anyone have the solution. you da gawd!

Commach: can tell me if there is any issue with Bitcomet or Bitspirit? I never try those apps.
If good review from you, then maybe I will spend more time over the weekend to try on them see if my port can be forwarded.

Can tell me what is the broadband modem model you have?
Do you have VoIP also? etc... I am trying to figure if there is any pattern.

Go read utorrent site, you don't need the green tick to even successfully connect to both trackers n peers.
The green tick means u can accept incoming connection, hence port is forwarded appropriately. There are many factors that induce p2p rates. it would be best if u can post screenshot of the downloads(censored dun post pls), and settings, incl. ur upload, number of connections, advanced options.
Also wanted are information about ur PC, free disk space, RAM and running processes.

For me, and thats me alone, Bitspirit work best for me, Bitcomet is slightly behind Bitspirit.
I tried using both P2P clients to download from the same source with the same hashes, 99% of the time, Bitspirit is way faster than Bitcomet. Both clients detected listening port opened without any issue as long as i performed the port forwarding in the router and check the exception for the program in Windows Firewall with the listening port (manually add port) open too.
But most of the friends get better result with Bitcomet.:D

Appreciate it chief! Will go into that once i am behind my desk at home.
btw I dont download censored ones. I am not into cheap thrills. :D
But in the mean time, I'd really like you to understand my predicament.
(sorry I didnt prepare any screenshots, just 1st hand accounts)
Last week, Tuesday - I was still with Singnet on 2Wire 2500HG. My laptop connected via wifi. Port forwarded to 18122. uTorrent port test verified that it's successfully opened. I downloaded Akon album(torrent) with connection to more than 50+(seeders), downloading at 300-700kb/s.
Last week, Wednesday morning btwn 9-11am - Starhub modem installed, plus WRT54G. My laptop connected via wifi. Port forwarded to 18122. uTorrent port test FAILED. I re-downloaded Akon album(torrent) with conenction to 5(seeders) at an average of 5-6kb/s download speed.
Last week, late Wednesday evening - I switched back to Singnet. Connected wifi. Port forwarded to 18122. Port Test PASSED. Downloaded Morrissey album(torrent) with connection to more than 30+(seeders) and took about 7min-10min to download. I didnt take note of the speed though.
No change was done to my laptop's uTorrent config, nor my laptop.

Your suggestion could solve my torrent downloads issue.
I havent try FTP port?? I shall do further test to confirm before i buy a NAS..
oh.. BTW Thanks Commach.

Is it because Starhub is the reason behind it?

All are personal rants cos the person cant get the speed for their individual gains.
But anyway, all ISP does it.
