Let's say I have 3mbps. so technically i can download like 370kbps.

So let's say I restrict the download speed to like 100kbps in flashget, and I have another computer trying to play DOTA.

DOTA probably will work smoothly on like 512kbps, so how come even if I restrict the download speed, the DOTA game will still lag?

The second I pause all downloads, DOTA is super smooth.

Is it because my ST570 router isn't very good at seperating bandwidth? Or is it something else? Aren't playing online games more severly affected by upload speed instead?

Meaning one PC is downloading, while another PC is used for playing DOTA online?

1. ur router is handling more traffic, so game inadvertly lags.

2. if all tasks are on same pc, ur processor need to handle them, so game inadvertly lags.

yeah i think it is.

"ST570
The first wireless modem in the SpeedTouch line. The ST570 features 802.11b wireless networking (11 Mbit/s) and can be secured using WEP and MAC filtering. The ST570 has 1 Ethernet port."

ic...is this modem. wat causes lag is becos this modem cannot handle, thus wil lag the whole thing.

either u can get a router to manage or dial up PPPoE from com which com wil manage. but b4 tat u need to bridge the modem.

The upload bandwidth will also affect online gaming very much.

Bingo :s13:

Most people ignore the upstream...

For every packet downloaded, there is one uploaded (error checking) and this does not include "seeding" as well...

And once the upload bandwidth gets saturated - everything comes to a crawl...

That is only on the basis of really hitting saturation rate. There are still many other factors that slows you down including the number of connection, router handling capacity etc even if you do/do not hit mah.

the QOS setting on the router be a good start ... bandwidth allocation is sometimes useless...
router QOS can really help speed things a lot..

ok i don't know if i'm understanding it correctly.

i'm just downloading files queued in flashget. just http downloads. not bitorrent that kind of stuff.

so is there still "uploading" as I'm downloading?
