My friend's DI-824VUP+ is not powering up. Using the same 5V/2.5A output.
Problem is, I can't confirm whether it's the power adapter or the router itself being faulty.

You can buy a replacement from Dlink service center for $15.
I opened those failed Dlink's adapters, about 5 of them, all suffered the same fate of bloated capacitors, i managed to restored 2 units by replacing the bad capacitors. It seem that Dlink's adapter are prompt to such problem although the wireless router itself enjoy lifetime warranty, but the fact is the adapter only 1 year warranty, hence when the adapter failed, user need to spend $15 to replace it or dump it for a new unit if using entry level router like the DI-524/DIR-300.

Care to share how you opened up the adapters?
Agree that D-Link's power adapter failure rate is very high. I experience and hear more of it than any other brands.

Hold the main housing firmly against the tabletop, deliver a hard and firm knock on the side of the lower housing (circled) with the ball of the palm, the housing will open nicely without any breakage, do take note of the screw holding the 2 pins plug to the lower housing, you need to unscrew it in oder to fully release the circuit board for easy access desoldering and soldering.
I replaced the circled capacitors for the 634M MIMO (5v 3.0A), 624+ (5v 2.5A) and 704UP (5V 2.5a).

Thanks for the detailed description with photo, commach. I really didn't expect to see a photo of the dismemberment.
I'll try to see if I can get it opened with your method first.

Got my adapter from the service hub at funan. Cost $15. Hope it do not die on me again. The previous one last for 1 year 7 months only.

Dont' really require a great deal of force to open the housing, i use my bare hand to palm open the housing. It is ultrasonic plastic welding form of holding the main and lower housing together, such welding method does not use any material or welding rod to "glue" them together, hence the matting surface are facial contact, one firm knock will easily split them without any breakage.

I guess I don't have the skill after several tries. Wonder if a hammer or something would work easier.
For now, I'll just ask my friend to go get from DLink's Funan Service Centre. Called them up and they are selling for $15 (as what you guys already mentioned).

Frankly speaking, i didn't tried using hammer because i knew the housing is manufactured in hard plastic hence using hammer will probably cause crack or breakage.
Maybe i am lucky, i opened them rather easy without hiccup, it simply opened without causing damage to housing and the circuit board, the 3 adapters which i failed to restore are probably cause by failed 7805 (5V) voltage regulator as i traced the output from the rectifier and transformer, there were no output from the 7805 which i will try to change it after CNY.
