when you use proxy means, that all your connections will pass through this proxy (web) server.
e.g. proxy server (in sg) proxy.singnet.com.sg 8080
this proxy server will cache the webpage everytime user access it. e.g. www.yahoo.com
-so when the next time a user access www.yahoo.com , this proxy server will give the cached data in the server to the end user,
-hence providing a faster web surfing speed. because the end user does not need to request the data all the way from us, www.yahoo.com server.
user without proxy.
-everytime when a user request www.yahoo.com , usually the data request will have to go all the way to us, hence travelling many backend routers until www.yahoo.com , hence causing a slower response.
why sometimes need proxy to go to certain website.
- site is down, proxy server still caches it.
- country server does not allow access from certain country, hence user have to use other's countries proxy server to access it.
hope it explains a bit

eh hehe no problem.
set proxy is normally in browser, router wise not too sure, some may support it though.
