Hi all,

I just upgrade my wireless router from a linksys wrt54g to a D-link DIR-655. I fixed up the router to my cable modem and all was working fine. All my computers that is on wireless can surf the net with no problems.

However, my main PC, which is connected to the router via a lan cable has very slow network speeds, even though the connection is detected as 1Gbps. Previously when it was connected to the wrt54g via lan cable but on 100Mbps it was working fine. But now, even accessing the web admin page of the dir-655 takes almost half a min to load the login page, when it should load within a couple of seconds. And when surfing the net, some pages wouldn't load and some would take a very long time to load, whereas the other computers can load the same pages a lot faster.

Initially I thought it was a problem on the lan ports of the router, but when i connected my laptop to the router via lan cable, my network speed was ok, even though the connection speed is only 100Mbps.

So I narrowed down the issue to settings on my main computer that is causing the slow down. But no mater what I change, it just remains slow. Even when I try to ping my other computers within the network, i might get 1 or 2 packets lost. I tried forcing it to connect with only 100Mbps but the same problem occurs. Is there any settings I should take note of when connecting with a gigabit connection?

Sorry for the wall of text, but i thought I should explain in detail to at least tell you all what I've done so far...any help would be appreciated...

hmm, try updating the drivers on your main computer?

Go to device manager and rightclick on the NIC then select properties>advanced, toggling the value of media type/speed&Duplex (depends on which NIC you are using) to Autosensing or 1000 Mbps full duplex.

change NIC

... it's an on-board nic...it worked well with 100mbps...only when i switch to DIR-655 which is a 1000Mbps port then the problem occurs. It has to be some setting problem...

hmm, try updating the drivers on your main computer?

Will try that later...

Anyway, I did some googling, it was mentioned that DIR-655 don't support Jumbo packets or something like that. I remember seeing Jumbo Packet Frame Size on my NIC settings...does that affect anything? Some forums also suggested turning off checksum offloading, not sure if it works but will try that later when I get home.

Any other suggestions?

dir655 does support jumbo frames up to 9k.

dir655 does support jumbo frames up to 9k.

.. o..k....weird, don't know why they say it doesn't support.
So is it recommended that I set jumbo frame size to 9k? or leave it at 1.5k?

Anyway, I forgot to mention that the motherboard is an abit KN8 Ultra, so it's using a nvidia nforce network controller. Not sure if that helps, but just in case you all might know of some configuration that I have to take note of

my previous recommendation still stands :)

Will consider that when all else fails.. :D

ok..i just updated my drivers. Now when i go to the nic settings, I can't even force it to 1000FD, i can only set up to 100FD and auto-neg. Auto negotiate will connect it to my router at 1Gbps. But the same problem still persists. Getting quite frustrated...

Just booted my pc with a live ubuntu CD, it can connect on gigabit and network speed is OK...so NIC is definately working fine on gigabit. Now is just down to windows settings....anyone can help...?

Can do a netstat -e and netstat -s and paste it here for reference?

Get the latest WHQL nForce drivers. Latest seems to be 20.08.

http://downloads.guru3d.com/NVIDIA-nForce-Driver-20.08-WHQL-XP-32-bit-download-2099.html

Install/update only the NIC driver and see if it helps.

Also try the below if new driver dont work.

Disable Large send Offload (IPv4)
Disable Interrupt Moderation
Disable any Nvidia firewall feature.

Set Jumbo Frame to 1.5k since there is no other Gbe device on connected.

No go...it's so new that it can't detect my nic :s13:
I had to reinstall my previous drivers.... sigh...it's worse than 56kbps now...even when accessing the admin page of my router :(

Then i can't help much for you, as from what i have read so far... its seems nvidia NIC are problematic themselves.

But it worked with ubuntu.....it's just windoze...I might want to attempt to restore my windows image, one which i created when i first installed windows, just to see if it works. If still cannot...den...i guess liangtam's suggestion will be my next option
