firstly, I use an Acer aspire 4920 that I bought from nanyang polytechnic's roadshow last year. I mainly use it at home, and I connect to my internet wirelessly - sharing the internet with my brother (who uses the home computer). his cpu connects to internet through a long wire or whatever this method is called...(not good with technical terms)

I don't know why but recently, my browser has been having problems connecting to a website. I use mozilla firefox by the way. It will say "Looking for site" or "Connecting to site". This problem will go on for like few minutes then disappear then it comes up again then disappears again like every 10minutes interval.

however, my utorrent, MSN, and gaming like warcraft3 works. any idea what might the problem be? thanks.

cathy.

Who's your internet service provider?

As long as you stay connected to uTorrent, MSN, and games, I doubt it's a problem with your computer or your router's Wi-Fi.

Most likely DNS issue check with service provider
Because utorrent gaming doesn't use DNS only website needs it to translate domain names to Ip addresses

Hello there, your problem has nothing to do with your acer laptop. In fact this is a browser bug in windows operating system.

The only feasible way to solve it right now is to reboot your computer. I also have this bug on my windows XP desktop.

The "long wire" that your brother used is called a cable.

Ethernet cable or UTP Cable (Unshielded Twisted Pair)

I'm using singnet. So should I call singtel and check with that DNS issue thingy?

Try this for your Mozilla Firefox:
Tools > Options... > Advanced > Network > Settings... > Manual Proxy Configuartion > HTTP Proxy: proxy.singnet.com.sg; Port: 8080 > Use this proxy server for all protocols > OK > OK

Or this on your Internet Explorer 7
Internet Explorer > Tools > Options > Connections > LAN Settings > Tick the below section Address: proxy.singnet.com.sg Port: 8080 > Tick the option below > OK > OK and try again.

Another thing you might want to do is flash the router firmware
Download the latest firmware for your router from the website
Connect to the router using a Ethernet Cable
Flash the router through the router configuration page
Something old router comes with buggy firmware hence it is good to upgrade it

I fail to see sense from what you have posted...

Since you mentioned that it also happens on Windows XP, I have yet to see it happen for me.

Are you using IE7?

Internet Explorer > Tools > Options > Connections > LAN Settings > Tick the below section Address: proxy.singnet.com.sg Port: 8080 > Tick the option below > OK > OK and try again.
He's using Firefox.

But talking about IE, do try out IE and see if the problem is just limited to Firefox.

If not you can try the SingNet proxy, which Firefox also allows you to use with.

Oh, I read it but I've forgotten about it.

Usually by default both proxies should be off, so they should experience the same thing.

So... for FF proxy method...:
Tools > Options... > Advanced > Network > Settings... > Manual Proxy Configuartion > HTTP Proxy: proxy.singnet.com.sg; Port: 8080 > Use this proxy server for all protocols > OK > OK

Will be updating in that post.

I don't think it is IE or Firefox configuration
By default the Proxy settings are auto detected hence there should be no problem
I strongly suggest upgrading firmware

That depends whether your ISP loves you or not.

I had that many times - switching on/ off proxy server will do.

Entering websites like:
www.imeem.com
www.hotmail.com > inbox
www.friendster.com
will fail when proxy server is off - that will happen for a certain period of time.

Switching on the server will resolve the issue.

Many Singnet Users were/ are experiencing this but not for Starhub.

Starhub do have hidden proxy, which I do not much understand about it.

In other words, it's not a problem with:
- your OS
- your browser

But your ISP.

can try 1 simple test?

when you get that problem again.
1. open command prompt, type "cmd" at the run prompt
2. enter "ping 209.131.36.158" (dun worry about the ip address it belongs to www.yahoo.com)
3. if got reply carry on and enter "ping www.yahoo.com"

see if all got replys or not.

No that proxy is not the transparent proxy.

The transparent proxy is automatically detected, but if you encounter problems with this transparent proxy then you got to try the proxy.singnet.com.sg:8080 proxy.
