There's only Motorola SB6100 for Ultimate plan which is suitable. Other modems only gives u 30mbps downstream, SB6100 gives you a full 100mbps in theory.

If you are using MOL Ultimate and SB6100 modem, highly recommend you to get the D-Link DIR-655 router.
I was using Linksys WRT54GS (Similar to yours except mine with speed booster) previously and i feel the speed much slower then connecting to the modem directly even when using wired connection to the router.
After i changed to D-Link DIR-655 router, now i am getting similar speed from connecting directly to modem through wired, and wireless speed is much faster as well with the Draft-N wifi compared to the Linksys a/b/g wifi

I have been using Motorola SBG1000 for eons, courtesy of Starhub.
Wireless speed is half of if I connect it directly to modem thru cable as tested on Speedtest. But I have no need for a router since the SBG1000 acts as a router as well. How can I boost my wireless speed?
By the way, if I change modem, I will have to provide Starhub with the MAC address right?
Sorry for the n00b questions...

You don't need change if you're using any modem except SB6100

WRT54G is an old design/router, you cant expect it to perform, hence time to upgrade.
Even though it has a 100Mbps WAN port, process liao come out only 40+Mbps despite 100Mbps switch.
Hence you need a router which can process about 160Mbps(preDOCSIS3 SB6100 is rated up to 160Mbps). The router currently distributed by Starhub for ultimate plan is a great choice if you don't want to make consideration between many models since WAN-LAN performance of each router is sometimes hard to come by. The model distributed by Starhub is also stated by DdrNigel above.

Yes you can boost your wireless signal but will require a mod. Google around for the answer for this. However, i would not recommand you to do it.
Instead get a new router. IT FAIR is nearby.. 12-15 March. I remember the previous time DIR-300 was selling at a really cheap price. Hopefully now the offer still be better.
For the cable modem, you can purchase one at a really low price @ marketplace hwz. Price race can be $10 onwards even for the sb5000+ series.
To update your modem, you have to go to http://www.starhub.com/consumer/promo/mol_macidswap_login.jsp
After entering your HFC and making the update, it should be done in a few minutes or a few hours.
