hey guys,

i just subscribe singnet bb 10mbps and after alot of trouble.. things seems to be okie...

i would like to ask about comtrend powerline ethernet adapter with filter..does this adapter need to be plug into a power socket only?

or can i plug into a power socket extension??

becos the guys that came to fix up my computer say plug into power socket only...

and my dad was like..what nonsense is that?? the electricity still go thru and stuff right??

i have no knowledge in the field...
hope you guys can help me out.....

btw i am getting only about 5k on speed test...i see others in this forum getting about 8k to 11k with the same plan as me..

what could be wrong???

There is obviously a reason why its preferred to plug into the main socket mah.

So my question is this, other than supplying power to the device, what does the product do, as in its main feature. This same feature relies on what?

Singtel installation guys told me that plugging comtrend into the jam pack extension gang will deteriorate the connectivity. I thought it was crap at first. till I have experienced it. seems like the interference from the other equipments will bring down the transfer rate of the homeplugs.

I got red signal on my 7 plugs packed brick, till i shift the homeplug to a main socket it's back to green or yellow to be exact.

Try do a direct speed test before suspecting whether its the home plug? who know ur adsl line is experience a poor connection instead?

Ok for ur case. is it a Powerline Over Ethernet adapter?

If it is, what singtel say is according to the manufacturer. Meaning Recommended situation. It's recommended that the plug is plug to the wall. BUT!!! It can also work on the power extension too.

The only down point what plugging in a power extension instead of wall socket IS, Speed issue! When plug in to wall socket the speed is higher.

BUT slightly higher is most cases. UNLESS U HAVE PLUG TONS OF STUFF ON UR POWER EXTENSION. Den u may encounter some speed problem. But so far I never encounter with 4 item on the power extension inclusive of the powerline over ethernet adapter.

FOR UR SPEED ISSUE, TRY plugging in directly to the router without ur comtrend, den do a "FTP FTP.SINGNET.COM.SG" speedtest Call up singnet technical support and tell them u want to do a speed test. from there they will assist u. If still 5mbps den they will send ppl down to check.

Else try to plug in comtrend SIDE BY SIDE (meaning next to each other) and redo the speedtest using singtel test method. and see if still lag. If still lag den is comtrend problem liao. Gotta contact comtrend for the solution already. BUT I dun recommend u contact comtrend urself if u are not a guru in networking. I recommend report the fault to singtel and let them send someone down to do a onsite 1-1 exchange FREE!!! When reporting they will ask u the SOP (Standard Operating Procedure). Like how many pc is connected to ur router? <--- ans: 1 Is ur pc connected wirelessly? <--- ans: if u wanna report comtrend fault den ans YES! Else say u connected directly using the CAT5E UTP ethernet cable. DEN come the bull**** is it connected in the same room or next door? ANS: same room plug together side by side on the same wall socket. Is it connected to the wall socket? ans: YES.

OK that's it they will book a appointment for u to send their technician down. to check. and replace.

Just saw this older thread...

Should plug into the wall socket direct, then plug your extension cord to the power point on the device. Because the power point on the device has a noise filter that will filter out all the noise generated by those devices plugged into the extension cord...

THis way your physical rate will improve tremendously.

Same case for Aztech plugs.

Also some extension cord with surge protector will cause these powerline communication devices to fail.

Does all PoE device require the equipment connect to the main wall plug?

Or only Comtrend has this issue?

I rem that time i attended the product briefing for Dlink powerline adapter.
they advice dun use on power bar cos due to some impedence issue can drastically redue the bandwidth.

in my company a few yrs back when they luanch the product in SG.
and that time my friend who did the testing mention there is a drop in bandwidth when connect with power bar.

I would say all power line communication devices would be affected if you plug in to power extension strips.

It depends alot on what kind of devices u plugged into the same strip and whether the strip comes with a surge protector.

I have a question.

Singtel installed the Comtrend bcos the 2Wire modem is not near the TV. Now if I were to add an Aztech homeplug to connect to the 2Wire modem for Internet access from another room, will the Aztech sync with the Comtrend? Otherwise, how can I add the Aztech to the same network?

TIA

I dont think comtrend and aztech are compatible.
