As for Anti-virus, if you don't mind paying a little. I would say Nod32 and Kaspersky. Else, Avast seem pretty good.

As for Anti-spyware/malware software, general Malwarebytes, Spybot and Spyware Blaster would be good enough.

Remember, never install more than one Anti-virus in the same system as it may cause more trouble than solution.

Try Avira Antivir, from personal experience, it catches quite a number of bugs tat Avast and AVG missed, including those autostart viruses/trojans...

http://filehippo.com/download_antivir/

However, it has a problem w/ false positives, detecting those 'keygen' executable files as trojans. Do note that Avast has this problem too. AVG doesn't, but of the 3, AVG's the worst in detection rate. Anyway, you'll have to select 'Ignore' to prevent it from deleting ur file, so just be alert what file is being flagged as dangerous.

Thankfully, that problem has been partly solved with the recent update to Antivir version 9, which adds a 'remember setting for this file' setting. So you only need to click once for those files that you know aren't viruses.

Sounds like a hassle, but when you factor in the fact tat it's free, updates regularly (everyday), it's a no-brainer...

Paid...NOD32 and Kaspersky...
Free... Antivir or Avast

Antispyware/malware.... try SUPERAntispyware

But if you are interested you can try Vipre (http://www.vipreantivirus.com/).

Vipre topman are:

The Vice President - Michael St. Neitzel (http://comodo.ulitzer.com/node/598344/mobile) is former NOD32 senior virus researcher.

Michael is widely regarded as one of the foremost experts on malware and its malicious mechanisms, and has authored a number of technical papers and publications, as well as participates regularly as a noted speaker at industry conferences. Michael comes to Sunbelt from FRISK Software, makers of F-Prot Antivirus, where he was a senior antivirus architect and company spokesperson. Prior to FRISK Software, he was a senior virus researcher with ESET s.r.o., where he worked on the NOD32 antivirus product. Previously, he was with Comodo Security, where he managed the team responsible for the Comodo firewall and antivirus products as executive director in Chennai, India. His expert opinion on computer security topics is frequently quoted in major newspapers, online media and television channels.

a little history with ESET (http://www.anyspyware.com/nod32.html) backed in Oct 1 2005

Make that super heuristics. I can guarantee that the heuristics getting even better now. Antivirus expert Michael St. Neitzel recently joined NOD32 (earlier this year). Michael heads a design team which is improving NOD32 antivirus and making it the best antivirus for many home users. It is also not very intensive on computer resources meaning you don't notice any slowdown!
