Hi!

Recently just upgraded from 3Mbps to 8Mbps from Singtel

However, speedtest revealed max 3.8Mbps dl speed with firewall turned on. After I disabled the firewall the dl speed went up to 8Mbps+

My antique Sygate software firewall has been set to 'Normal' mode and this has prevented the full dl speed. I reset the firewall to 'Allow All' and the speed again went up to 8Mbps plus

So, 'Allow All' is the same as disabling the firewall

Anyone can recommend a software firewall that can allow 8Mbps or more dl speed in 'Normal' mode?

Thanks

Are you saying my 1,8GHz, 4GB RAM notebook is inadequate?

As I said by disabling the antique SYGATE softwall firewall I've no problem reaching the dl speed of 8Mbps

You think firewall process no need CPU resource is it?

Well, most ppl have moved on to comodo firewall. But as you should know, the above still applies

OK, I just tested with speedtest with/without software firewall turn on and check the CPU performance using the default Windows's Performance graph

With software firewall turn on the avg CPU went up to about 70% and the max dl speed is about 3Mbps

Without the software firewall turn on the CPU performance is about 35% avg while the dl speed reaches 8Mbps

These estimations are taken during the short period when the graphs are at their peak value i.e. they're rather horizontal

Of course firewall processing do take some CPU power but in this case, with it turn on, I still have about 30% spare capacity.

I conclude that my firewall is unable to process that huge amount of incoming data. In fact SYGATE software firewall has been defunct for quite a number of years.

Well, I'll look for another software firewall to conduct a re-test again to determine if it's my notebook thats inadquate or its the firewall problem
