Hi guys, recently I had this problem which happened two times already. My computer hanged once and I had to reboot my comp. After rebooting, i realised that bootup was extremely slow. Once I got in, i realised that my creative drivers were missing and there were no sound at all from my speakers. From the device manager I see that my X-fi has the exclamation mark over it. I unintalled the driver (which took extremely long too) and reinstalled it and everything went back to normal.

Then i decided to run the quick and extended test from the WDD diagnostics tool and found our that SMART testing failed and the extended test reported that too many bad sectors were found.

I then tried to use HDD regenrator to salvage my bad sectors. It showed that all bad sectors recovered but trying the WDD diagnostics again showed the same results.

Quesition: What should I do now? RMA? Or should I leave everything as it is cos everything can run now. Need some advice guys. Thanks.

What's the percentage of the bad sectors in the hard drive?
If it is a lot, then it may just warrant a RMA for a new one.

Even now your bad sectors are identified and recovered, the bad sectors can still grow over time when you continue to use the hard drive so you may again encounter the same issue again in the long run.

In my opinion, best is to RMA but make sure you save all your data out before you do....:)

Thanks for yourr reply Calvin. Current I see that its around 2-3% of my HDD (640GB) Actually this is the second time this is happening. The first time after it happened, I formatted zeroes and ran both the quick and extended test. Everything went well...

try to run another scan using wdc's tool. then verify it using another software like hdtune. if both positive, file rma online and follow the instruction. dun risk further damage on ur HDD. but, dun just rma without evidence, cuz after rma, u only get back recertified HDD.
