How to play multiplay games behind a router using direct ip?

My friend and wants to play fifa 09. but both of us are using a router. We both live apart. So how do we find the correct ip address?

since the router is tasked with handling the connection, of course its where you get the IP. Well, unless you are not using the standard setup methods.
